"Phew!" Daniel slung his duffel bag over his shoulder, exiting the boy's locker room with his teammates. "Good job today guys! Coach sure had us workin' extra hard today!" he grinned at them, high-fiving the ones closest to him. Daniel was ready to just go home and plop down on the couch (with his homework next to him), and watch some good old-fashioned cooking shows. Maybe after he stopped by the cafe and got himself and Violet some pastries (one slice of strawberry shortcake wouldn't hurt right?). They were cutting through the school fields, as that was a much faster way to get to Teufel Town's blimps that going through the front of the school and down the street. Upon reaching the gates, the boy turned to his team, "Anyways, I gotta go this way, I want some cake before heading on home." his teammates laughed, some of them shaking their heads at Daniel. His teammates didn't know how he was so open about his love for pastries and sweets; it was so...girly. Not the mention the fact that he was one of their biggest players, possibly even one of the biggest kids in their school.
They waved bye to him, and he waved back, heading off towards the cafe at a leisurely pace.

Gemma barely registered the opening and closing of the front doors of the school as she made for home. She had, yet again, found out too late that the soccer scrimmage had been cancelled again. Not that it mattered, since the season was dwindling down anyway, but she had sat outside in her soccer gear waiting for it nonetheless. It was likely for the best anyway, since she had not felt up to it anyway. Since Teufel Day, she felt a certain kind of heaviness in her heart and thoughts, and spent most of her afterschool time lounging in her room. It was unlike her, and it bothered her, but she was at a loss for what to do.
She skirted the outside perimeter of the practice fields, glancing casually at the teams who were still playing or just ending their practices. A small outpour of guys from the gym told her that lacrosse practice had just ended. Maybe some physical activity would lighten her mood, but she had nobody to play with, and really she did not feel like doing it, even if she knew it was probably a good idea. Was this what depression felt like?
As her eyes focused quite determinedly on the concrete, she bumped shoulders with someone just exiting the field. Gemma shook her head and straightened up. "O-oh, er, sorry, I didn't mean to.. y'know." A lame ending but an ending nonetheless. She cast a glance at the guy she had bumped into, holding her gaze fairly evenly with him (as she was rather tall for her age), but averted it quickly in embarrassment. "Sorry."

Dan dug his hand into his jean pocket, and took out his cellphone typing a text to his younger sister ("stoppin by the bakery. what do you want"). He continued to walk at his slow pace, giving more attention to his phone and the area in front of him. Now that he was finished texting, maybe he should check out that new program he got for his phone, the one where he could talk to his friends (and other people in his school all at once). As he was fiddling with his phone, he didn't notice that there was someone else approaching his way, until he bumped shoulders with them, almost dropping his phone.
"Oh geez, I'm sorry! You okay?", he asked, sliding his phone back into his pocket (if he broke this phone, his parents had told him he wouldn't be getting a new one for a looong while). "I mean, uh, I'm alright. he met her gaze, though his was admittedly a more confident one. She seemed very familiar, though he couldn't remember exactly where he saw her. She was definitely playing one of the sports, because that long blue hair of hers was pretty striking. "Uh, I'm guessing you go to the high school, 'cause I've seen you around the field somewhere..." he continued, hoping maybe that would help him figure out where he had seen her before. He adjusted the strap of his duffel bag, smiling at her. She looked pretty down in the dumps, he had to admit, and couldn't help but feel a pang of concern for the girl.

Gemma bristled defensively as he addressed her, still keeping her gaze to the ground.. only to be surprised as he asked about her. "N-No, I'm okay. Yeah, okay." To emphasize this, she patted herself down, only to realize how dorky that probably looked and abruptly stopped, leaving her hands to hang awkwardly in the air for a moment before dropping to her sides. She recognized him fairly easily, having played on the same teams with a few other lacrosse players. His good reputation preceded him, it seemed, and she smiled her normal, uneasy smile as he continued to talk to her.
"Yeah, uhm," she replied awkwardly. "I play on a few teams." Again her gaze dropped, only to spring back up at him. He knew her somewhat, and she knew him.. well, of him at the very least. "You're Dan Sonnen." After a moment, she pursed her lips and realized how unexpectedly creepy that might have sounded. She pushed her bangs out of her face with a nervous hand. "Oh god, that sounded weird, didn't it? I mean, uhm, I know of you, I play with a few guys on the lacrosse team." She felt the color rising in her face and her insides felt as though they were twisting up from bottled nerves. The gamut of emotions she had been feeling lately was enough to make most people boil over, surely, but this extra encounter at the height of such emotion could tip the scales. Despite how nonplussed she felt, she looked back to Dan and rattled out a reply. "P-Practice is over, I guess, yeah?" What do I even say to someone like him?

Dan laughed, adjusting the strap of his bag on his shoulder, "Oh yeah, yeah!", he said, "That's where I remember you from! Some of the guys were saying how you gave them a tough time!", he laughed again, remembering how out of breath some of his teammates were during that field soccer game. "You're on the girl's soccer team? Varsity or junior varsity?", he asked once he had calmed down.
"But, hey.", Dan said gently, "That wasn't creepy don't worry about it.", he smiled reassuringly, as this was probably the most normal hello he had gotten from a girl from the high school in a long time. "You should see how the other girls react.", he shook his head. Dan scratched the back of his neck nodding, "Yeah, practice just finished a few minutes ago, I'm about to stop by the bakery and get something to eat before heading home." He didn't bother mentioning the name of the bakery, since really what boy did go to Cafe di Magia? And what would his new friend think of him? He really didn't want to weird out anyone, especially on their first impression of him. "You wanna come along? This bakery I go to has really delicious cakes."

"O-oh, I'm junior varsity. I'm uh, only a sophomore." Gemma's awkward smile was wiped from her face when she heard that she had been talked about. At least as far as Dan was concerned, it was something that was not that big of a deal, but at the moment Gemma did not know how to feel about it. However Dan was quick to move the conversation along, and even if he did not know much of her or if she was feeling particularly under the weather now, she appreciated it.
"Ah yeah, I.. I can imagine." It was no secret that Dan was quite popular among the ladies, as Gemma had heard his name among conversations as she passed between desks, or groups of girls letting their gazes stray towards the lacrosse field as she moved from practice to the locker rooms. Still, she could not rightly blame them - he seemed nice enough. As though he had read her mind, he extended the invite to join him at the bakery. There were plenty of reasons flashing through her head to decline - what would other girls think if she went to a bakery with Dan Sonnen, what would his teammates think, would he get harassed about it. Thoughts of fleeing home and curling up in her bed for hours did not seem very appealing either, as she had spent her weekend doing just that. Gemma hated wallowing, but that was all she was capable of in recent days. She hated it terribly.
Therefore she surprised herself by saying, "Sounds good." Her fingers clenched against her backpack straps reflexively. "Where is it?"

Dan smiled, refraining to show his excitement at Gemma accepting his offer, "It's uh, just around the school corner. You know, more into town.", Dan said, "I guess it's pretty good cause, its so close to school I can just run by and grab something on the way home.", Dan hesitated to ask her if she knew the store he was talking about, though he was pretty sure she knew just from the location he had given her. He had also seen her smile fade earlier, and wondered if he had said something wrong, though he wasn't at the stage where he could outright ask her if she was okay and expect an honest answer. If she wanted to talk about it, he was there for her, he supposed. There was no use in trying to force someone to talk if they didn't want to.
"Do you have a favorite dessert?", he asked, trying to keep the conversation light, and also in an attempt to bring up her mood. "My younger sister was whining about, how much she wanted a strawberry cheesecake the other day. Only mom picks her up immediately after school, so she can't stop by like how I can.", Dan laughed, seeing his younger sister's pout clearly in his mind.
"Do you have any siblings?"

Gemma only nodded slowly and walked next to Dan, her pace keeping her just enough behind him without trailing. Now that he had mentioned it, she had seen the bakery on her wanderings, but she had never thought to go inside. Although sweet treats were nice, Gemma always had a small appetite and she could never finish them alone.
At the question of a favorite dessert, she raised her eyes from the ground momentarily and the flash of an uncertain smile crept to her lips. "I, um, I like cake myself, yellow cake." Chocolate cakes and ice creams, in her opinion, were overkill. She hated the feeling of her mouth and throat being coated. "Boring, I know." Dan's laugh and his story about his sister helped ease her own smile into a more natural one, and then the question turned to siblings.
"Three," she answered automatically, and then a small laugh bubbled to her lips. "Toby, he's eleven, Liesel, who's ten, and Rory, she's only two." The talk of sweets brought another laugh, as she started to relax a little more, her cloudy mood dissipating in the slightest with her new company. "My mom, when she was pregnant with Rory, used to have a bad sweet tooth. We'd be making sweets every other day." She could not remember the last time that Toby had whined so loudly from the terrible stomach aches those sweets had given him. She glanced around the store fronts as they walked, the conversation lapsing into momentary silence, and she indicated the small bakery just ahead of them. "This it?" She thought it might be it but she did not want to presume. She'd made too many presumptions the past week.
