Living in a herd was all Aaliyah had wanted for a long time. While there were many herds across the land, though, she had found this one, Anuyidan'Danayi, to be the one best suited to her. She couldn't explain it--at least, not very quickly, and not very well--but she couldn't imagine being anywhere else. Even after months of living with them, however, she still found it difficult to quite trust her herdmates. The last herd she had belonged to had kicked her out, and though she knew she would have to learn how to trust them, she was always afraid that whatever she did would be unsatisfactory to someone in a position to have her banished. She was certain that the heartache of losing the place she felt she belonged would kill her, as would the hurt of losing a friend.
So she had worked hard, and even after living here for nearly a year, Aaliyah had yet to make friends. It wasn't that she didn't know anyone, it was just that she was too afraid to try.

The dark eyed nova had finally returned after a long excursion down the river he emerged from the oasis his head bobbing up and down in the water, the herd had grown again since the last time he had come, mostly mares, not that was a bad thing, he always enjoyed the warm company of a mare on a cold desert night. Nights in the desert could be very cold indeed.
And would you look at that, one of the more shy mares, an artisan, if he recalled correctly she'd been among the first to join this Bedouin herd one of the other traders had found her in the desert wandering or something of the like. She was a very fine one indeed she had quite a pedigree it seemed much like his white desert maiden that had wandered through the oasis not too long before the herd had been established she bore distinctly similar tack, that couldn't have been a coincidence.
As the scorching sun beat down Badr had to sink beneath the waters surface, what good would it do to have his handsome form become dried out and cracked how hideous he would have looked then, the nova swam near the shore watching the mare for a time pondering the best way to approach her. He did have a reputation to upkeep.

The river glinted in the sun like an inviting jewel. Thankfully, there were no predators in the river (at least, not as far as she knew), so Aaliyah felt safe there. She should technically probably be working right now, but most of the stars seemed to be taking a break in the hot sun at the moment. Thus, with a twinging conscience, she ventured towards the river to admire it before going back to work.
The glint of sunlight on gold told her that she was not alone. The [somewhat disreputable] trader Badr Basim had returned from his latest travels, it would seem. Badr had, well...a reputation among the herd. Aaliyah had heard a rumor that the Shah did not trust him (though it was said that the Shah didn't trust anyone but the queen), but more importantly, he was known for having many children with many different mares. As someone who was trying to protect her virtue in the light of her somewhat troubled past, Aaliyah felt just a little uncomfortable in Badr's presence (well, at least alone with the sensual stallion). But then again, it would be rude not to greet him, wouldn't it? Back to the original hoof, though, how could a mare speak to a stallion? Especially when she noticed that they were [gulp!] alone?

Ah, she'd taken notice of his glinting jewelry, too bad he would have liked to surprise her a little more. Badr swam up to the surface fully emerging the upper half of his body so she could see him better he swam closer to the shore to get a better looks at the mare. She was cautious Badr mused as he looked at her, His reputation preceded him as per usual but that was no matter for him,
"What brings a fine artisan to the water's edge this fine day?" the stallion asked her, treading water in one place. "Crave you inspiration perhaps" the merman raised his brow, from time to time he'd see the young artists come by the waters edge and leave filled with ideas, this was one of the favorite spots of many artisans. From time to time he'd tell them stories of the places he'd visited on his travels far from the oasis it often seemed to bring many insight.
His jewelry glinted in the hot sunlight, if he were not a nova he'd be boiling, then again he couldn't set a fin out of the water fully for more than 5 minutes, he'd dry up like a grilled fish... That thought wasn't appealing in the least. It had been much cooler in the place he had just come from perhaps this mare would like a story of a far away land. he had a hard enough time trying to find a story the queen would like, that mare's memory was monstrous truly an incredible piece of work.
"May I ask a pretty mare for her name?" he finally asked with a little bow inside the water.

And now he was talking to her. Seriously, how did a mare talk to a stallion, especially a renowned flirt like Badr Basim?! Well, at least he'd done the work of the greeting already? "Oh!" she squeaked. "Um, inspiration, uh..." No. "No? I was just...over here because I wanted to take a look at the river." She bowed her head in embarrassment, letting her mane fall across her face. It wasn't that Aali was normally shy, it was just that she wasn't sure how to have a conversation with someone about non-professional matters. She was an artisan, a mare, and a consummate truth-teller. She didn't like lying, so even if the truth was difficult to voice, she would always tell it. Even if it was incredibly awkward to say.
"It just, um, looks very pretty today," she mumbled. "And everyone else seems to be taking a break, I thought I'd take a short one before getting back to work? And it is cooler here by the river than out on the sands," she added quickly. When Badr asked her for her name, her embarrassment only grew. "I'm Aaliyah," she said very quietly. "It's...nice to meet you at last, Badr Basim." She straightened her throat. "Where have you just come from?" she asked, desperate to get the topic of conversation off of herself and onto the other star.

Badr was a nova unlike the rest, in every form, he was am explorer, story weaver, lover, and trader, there were many parts to the rather unique stallion, and some he kept a private little secret, let them try and guess, it was like a game.
Badr smiled "The river is always beautiful, and holds many secret beauties." Only thing that could make this better was more female company, but alas. He still thoroughly enjoyed telling stories of his travels, so when she asked a twinkle appeared in his eye.
"Aaah so you would like to hear a tale of the herds from distant lands?" He said before ducking under the water for a moment to re hydrate his drying skin. Truly the only unfortunate thing about being a nova in the desert, well maybe one of two things, the other being a lack of water in the desert. The Stallion swam a little closer to the shore he could feel the wet sand beneath his hooves but he made certain he was still mostly covered in water.
"The ocean is where I just returned from, so vast and deep, I was sent to inspect the Blacksmithing herd on their island and some of the wandering Nova's hidden in the deep who by Rumor had fine wares..." he began, "Perhaps the pretty lady would like to choose which to hear of first?"

Badr Basim was flirting with her. Wait, no! It suddenly occurred to her that maybe he wasn't. Maybe he was just a nice stallion and was complimenting her. Inwardly, she scolded herself for having jumped to conclusions about him. Who was she to question another star's honor? She resolved right then and there to be less suspicious of him and to give him a chance. With that in mind, she smiled back at him and settled down for a story. She had time before she had to get back to work, and Badr was supposed to be an entertaining storyteller. Besides, it was unlikely she'd ever meet someone from another herd, and since her wares were the ones being sent hither and yon, she might as well learn about who her (rather distant) customers were.
"I would love to hear about this blacksmithing herd. What do they make, and what are they like?" She might run out of time on break before the second story, but she could come talk to him later after sundown when work was over. It wouldn't be much of a hardship, and she now felt guilty about her harsh earlier judgment of him. This would make it up to him, right? Even if he didn't realize it.

Badr raised his brow for a moment it was curious she hadn't decided to leave yet given the reputation he had with the King of Kings, but he certainly wasn't complaining in the least in fact he much preferred that. Using his tail to splash water on the part of him that wasn't' submerged he smiled quite charmingly at the mare as he made himself comfortable.
Maybe he would woo this mare yet. Such was his reputation and he din't mind it in the least. A good mare beside you for a night or day was a fine thing indeed. Something to be quite thankful for.
"Pretty Maiden care to take a seat?" he offered her sweetly as had already gotten comfortable. A position which left his fins free for the story, He stroked his goatee looking quite refined, as he began. "The herd isolated in the ocean is quite a feat arrive at. I traveled through many meandering rivers, underground waterways finally leading me to the vast ocean as far as they eye can see..." he paused actively shaping his journey with is fins his voice orchestrating his journey.
"There one of the herd's traders greeted me, a fine soul indeed, quite a traveler himself we had grand conversation on the way." Badr gave the mare a smile "He led me to the herd's great volcanic island a giant mountain protruding from the sea, so large it blotted out a portion of the sky...." he paused again taking a moment to look at the mare and see her reaction.

Calling her "pretty maiden" kind of smacked of flirtiness, but it could also be just a compliment, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing to be suspicious about. She could sit here and listen to a wonderful tale of people she'd never heard of in a place she'd never visit without losing her virtue or honor, right? Unless, of course, other people saw her with Badr Basim and came to the wrong conclusion, but that thought didn't occur to Aaliyah. No, at the moment, he was a storyteller and a herdmate she'd never gotten to know very well. And she was a receiver of his story.
The matter of underground rivers was a fascinating idea for Aaliyah. She'd heard stories, of course, that they were how Badr, a nova, could go from the desert to the coast without an arduous journey on land, and she found herself once again captivated by the idea. She wanted to know more, but didn't dare interrupt his story. "Did you know this trader before you came to the volcano?" she asked. He seemed to be waiting for her to respond to something, and that was the first thing that came to mind.
