The sun cast a beautiful orangeish glow over the ocean as it slowly, lazily decided now was a good time to think about maybe possibly starting to set. Potentially. The rolling waves reflected the light back up; it looked quite pretty so long as you didn't look at the wrong wave at the wrong time and end up with bright lights shining at your eyes.
Seraphine would have no such concerns with that, her pale green eyes focused somewhere in the general vicinity of the wooden boards beneath her heeled feet as she absently picked at the ends of her dress that stopped just above her knees. Dith had suggested she go out - it wasn't healthy to mope around the house so much - and so she did so. The beach was always nice, as was the boardwalk that broke up the long stretches of sand. It wasn't anything fancy - a couple shops, an ice cream parlor, and numerous benches along the perimeter of it. The brunette was sitting on one such bench while Luna stood behind it, staring out at the ocean. Isabella was laying down alongside it, and Giselle had taken a page from Dith and Zla - while she was out of her ball, she remained invisible until needed. The Mismagius was determined not to allow such cowardly transgressions to pass again as what had occurred not long ago to her young trainer.

He still wasn't really sure how he was supposed to react to this. He remembered meeting Rosie on his first day in Kodo and how troubled she had looked, and he remembered seeing her in the Sandalwood hospital after the tragedy that was the raided contest. Was he supposed to feel sad like that? Or angry like how he had felt after hearing about it? If it had been me, what would I have done? It wasn't as though he had never considered the question, especially given how present and active the Rockets were in the region, but he had never found an answer. He still didn't know the answer, really. It all just felt kind of distant and surreal, and though he was tired, he felt it would be a good idea to continue dreaming a little longer before returning home to try and make sense of reality.
The salt-scented beach breeze wasn't unpleasant, and the dying summer sun was warm without being oppressive. Luke didn't recall arriving at Camphoreon's boardwalk, but it certainly didn't seem like a bad place to be. He moved past the modest shopfronts, his eyes absently watching the illuminated waves lull in the distance. His inattentiveness was interrupted by the recognition of a moderately-sized group of pokemon formed around a familiar trainer on one of the benches. It wasn't too terribly uncommon to run into Seraphine around the city, but it was odd to see her looking anything but perfectly confident. Passingly curious, he approached the bench.
"Hey Sera," he was somewhat surprised by his tone of voice; he sounded far more tired than he felt. "What's up?"

While there usually wasn't much on Sera's mind apart from fashion, or what fancy cafe to eat at that day, or what accessories to buy, lately she had an entirely different reason to not focus on much. If she didn't think about Anastasia - or at least, not think about her too much - then she wouldn't remind herself of that awful day. The fact she ruined a perfectly good dress and pair of shoes - not to mention how it messed up her hair as well - were usually things that would be monumental affronts to her person, a blasphemous travesty. In light of losing her first and favorite Pokemon, however, such things took a backseat and mattered very little in comparison. Still, she'd gotten rid of the dress and the shoes, because what else would she do with them? They were ruined, just like her pride at this point.
Her solemn, listless expression morphed into one of slight surprise as her head lifted and green eyes found Luke standing there, looking at her. "Oh. Hey Luke," she replied softly as she found her voice. It sounded slightly hoarse, but whether it was from crying or lack of use wasn't clear. "Nothng, really," the girl answered vaguely. "What about you?"

There was definitely something odd about her, something unusual in her disposition. Offhandedly Luke hoped that it was his imagination or overanalysis and not the result of something bad. He'd quite had his fill of bad somethings.
'Nothing,' that was a pretty safe answer - one he wouldn't mind returning when the same question was asked of him. He found it difficult to form the response on his voice, though, and his friendly nonchalance, against all effort, faded. "Some stuff, I guess," he offered with a wilting shrug, his hands finding his pockets and his gaze falling away. Recognizing the vagueness of his reply, he substantiated it slightly, "It's been kind of a long day."

He looked... Sort of odd. Sera blinked slowly, watching him curiously. She wasn't a very good judge of body language - not counting is-this-boy-interested-in-me-or-not body language, she was very good at reading that - but he seemed.. rather depressed. Empathy was a very odd feeling indeed, but it made her feel sort of... good? Not good, but.. well, it gave her a small bit of comfort to know she wasn't the only one in low spirits.
"'Stuff' doesn't sound good." What ever did at this point? "What happened?" She asked after a few moments. Despite being as listless as she was, previous events had done little, if anything, to improve what small amounts of tact she had.

He laughed briefly, "No, I wouldn't really call it good." Something fell into place, and Luke began to understand his response to the matter. It was a helpless sense of guilt, a knowledge that his own actions, or lack thereof, were a determining factor in the way the results had played out and an understanding that there wasn't anything he could do but accept it. He raised his eyes to meet Seraphine's attention, an empty smile in his features, "My Flareon was stolen earlier, by some Team Rocket woman."

Her initial reaction to this news wasn't so much an emotion as it was a memory she had been trying to suppress that was now forcefully dragged back to the forefront of her thoughts. Her lips parted slightly, briefly, before they formed a thin line as she quickly cast her gaze downward. She noticed her hands had clenched over her knees, so with a conscious effort she unclenched them and smoothed out the ends of her dress. "That's.. that's awful," she finally said quietly.
She had a feeling she should share her own news, since it was so glaringly similar, if not the same, but saying it out loud was so hard. It was like admitting it all over again that Anastasia was gone, that she'd never see it again. Her heart had never hurt this much before. "I.." Why were words so hard sometimes? "My Umbreon too," she finally managed to say quietly. "At least, I think it was Team Rocket. I didn't.. really see who it was.."

It was easy to blame his troubles on himself, but the feelings dredged up by Seraphine's confession were nothing short of anger and hatred. "Well who the hell else would it be?!" he shouted suddenly. He recognized that this wasn't the time or the place to raise his voice, but he had mysteriously little control over his words, as though some final safeguard had been tripped. "It's always been Team Rocket! What have we been working toward for so long that they can just waltz up to us and take whatever they want?! What the hell is the League doing that they can waltz up to us and take whatever they want?!"
He took a moment to exhale his residual anger before speaking in more rational terms, "Have you been in contact with the League at all?" Not that they seemed to be doing a whole lot of good, but that one guy did say to call if anything happened.

His sudden shout startled her, and she stared back up at him with wide eyes. The rhetorical questions he asked - or maybe it was his tone, or his volume, or just the combination of everything that had happened over the past several weeks - made her face grew hot, and she quickly averted her gaze to fidget with the ends of her skirt again. Though she tried to blink back the tears, they began to fall silently regardless, the occasional sniffle being the only audible indication of her emotional state. "They snuck up on me," she said finally, as if making a feeble attempt to defend herself. "I didn't know what had happened until after.. after she went into her ball and it just.. it wasn't there..."
She sniffled again and wiped at her eyes with a hand. "No," the brunette replied miserably in answer to his last question, still not looking up at him. Why even bother?

Ah, that wasn't really what he was trying to achieve. He hadn't specifically wanted to say any of that, but it was kind of hard not to get mad. He could accept that Mieu's theft was his own fault, but the fact that his friends were being targeted as well was unforgivable. "Sorry." He drew a breath and exhaled slowly, dispensing of residual frustration and focusing on words that could actually help. "That guy at the party said to contact him if anything happened, right? It's better than doing nothing.
"You're not weak, you know? You spent all that time in Hoenn, and you have all these pokemon willing to help you fight. It's not like whoever stole your Umbreon just disappeared off the face of the planet. I think the best thing you can do is just be ready to fight them whenever they show up, and know that you can win."
It was weird to say such things as if he believed them himself. Certainly he would continue to work hard, and certainly he would continue to fight against Team Rocket, but the idea that he could recover Mieu from either of those efforts just sounded like a happy lie.

His apology invoked a strange feeling, and she opened her mouth to speak - shut it, wiped her eyes, and then opened it again. She still didn't look at him. "No, it's okay... I just.." Just what? Just nothing. She shut her mouth again and wiped her eyes once more. At least the tears were lessening. Sort of.
"What good is that?" She said suddenly, turning her tear-streaked face up to his, her thin hands clenched over her knees. "What good is all the training we've done when they can just sneak up and take what they want when we're not looking?!" Would they have to always be on their guard forever? Even when they were sleeping? ...Giselle - Giselle was a ghost. She could always leave the Mismagius out, she liked to be invisible anyway. If Giselle were always out and invisible, she would be able to tell if someone was sneaking up on her again and warn her.
Luna frowned at Sera's outburst, ears flicking back slightly. She still wasn't exactly fond of the child - no proper adult behaved in such a way, so a child she was - but the girl had had a rough time lately and looked like she might have potential to improve. Luna could appreciate that. The Rapidash snorted quietly and leaned her head over to gently nudge Sera's cheek with her muzzle, and the brunette reached a hand up to wipe her eyes, and the other to stroke the fire-type's cheek. If nothing else, it quieted her sudden shout and seemed to stop the flow of her tears. Or perhaps her thoughts had more to do with it? She wasn't sure, and she didn't really care at the moment.

He clenched and unclenched his hands idly, softly focused eyes watching the sun-dyed waves ebb and flow. "I'm probably not the person you should be talking to about this," he said. "It all feels pretty pointless to me too. Maybe I'm just stubborn, though, but I don't want to give up." He tensed slightly, frowning, "I don't want to lose more pokemon or see any more friends lose theirs, you know? I don't know if training will do any good, but I know that doing nothing definitely won't."
The weight of his sword at his waist was a welcome familiarity after not carrying it for so long. More than recovering Mieu or avenging anyone else's loss, he found in his thoughts the distant notion that he would be happy simply to have the Rockets atone for their actions. There was a vague concern stirring in his subconscious for what that atonement had to do with his intentions for the blade he had decided to carry once more.

The brief show of compassion ended and Luna removed her muzzle from Sera's hands to instead turn and watch the slowly setting sun, and Sera dried her tears finally. "Yeah, I know.." She couldn't help but sigh at how helpless it made her feel though. "I guess.. I guess you're right." Normally she would never tell anyone else they were right - usually that meant admitting she was wrong and like hell that would ever happen - but right now it really... Well, what he said made sense. She had two options - give up and do nothing, and therefore be caught unawares again, or keep working hard so if she was approached by another Rocket, she would be prepared and could defend herself. The right choice was clear, in her mind, and she realized how necessary training was now - before it was just something to pass the time, something she hadn't ever really gotten into - but now it served a purpose. A very important purpose. "At least if we keep training... we'll be able to defend ourselves.. Right?" They could, couldn't they?

"Yeah." He could agree sincerely with that much, at least. "Good defense is the best offense, as they say... I dunno how true it is, but there's a lot to be said for being able to kick someone's a** before they can even get close to you." There was a lot to be said about the confidence that came with that ability as well. A little more confidence and a little more sense probably could have saved Mieu, but it was too late for that now, just like it was too late for Anastasia. They could only look forward now, but what was ahead was all the more crucial because of that.

Sera sniffled and wiped her eyes again to rid her cheeks of any stray tears. "Yeah.. As long as you know they're there so you can kick their a**, though." Another sniffle. "But I think.. I'm going to do what Dith does from now on. He always has his Haunter out - did you know? He just stays invisible most of the time." It was highly probable Luke already knew that, but she felt the need to have some sort of explanation before she just suddenly started spouting suggestions or things to do. "I think I'm gonna do that with Giselle from now on. That way she'd see if anyone was trying to sneak up on me."
The named Mismagius faded into view nearby with a quiet "maaaygius," as if to affirm her Mistress's last statement.
A brief, small smile lit up the teen's face, but it was quickly replaced with a soft frown. She concentrated on her toes for a few moments before peering back up at Luke, her next quandary foremost in her thoughts. It didn't seem quite so easy to fix. "I'm not..." No, she couldn't admit such a fault. "I don't really..." No, that was still admitting ignorance. She frowned again, although whether it was at herself or the difficulty of the choice of words was anyone's guess. "How do you train your pokemon? I never really did a lot with mine."
