Toao had been feeling better recently. After making some new friends he'd started venturing out more. His family was helping keep his spirits up at home, now he just wanted to find some happiness outside in the world. Some noodles had been talking about a new club that just opened, Seimei had gone and giggled afterwards talking about it and recommended that Toao gets out there for some fun. He'd agreed and headed out over the next night. The night was full of stars and he smiled staring up at them, so many memories from those stars... He walked into the club, the music hopped and bopped and Toao couldn't help but find his head swinging to the music. I wonder what will happen tonight. He wondered, smiling.

Echo took a long drink from his water bottle and set it back down on the stool. "Alright boys, let's get them out on the dance floor!" He pulled is guitar over his head and stepped up to the mic. His band mates were a little happy from the alcohol, but it didn't affect their music skills, luckily. Normally, he'd be as happy as they were, but since he stopped drinking he wasn't able to relax and enjoy the night like everyone else. His pick hit the guitar strings and the rest of the band started playing. Echelon played flawlessly with the others, but he was just going through the movements. He watched as the happy drunks down below dragged friends from their drinks and stumbled on the dance floor. After an...accident that happened not to long ago, Echo vowed never to drink again. Love should be forever, not a blur that lasts one night. He thought to himself. The song ended and he had to take a few steps back to avoid sighing heavily into the microphone. The manager came on stage and congratulated them for another great performance and started introducing the next band. "Great job, guys." Echelon patted his band mates on the back as they headed off stage. They returned his words and wandered off to where their friends waited to embrace them and buy them more drinks. Echo headed to an area with a few empty bar stools and hopped onto the one furthest away from everyone. "Water, please." The bartender nodded and walked over to get a plastic bottle from a minifridge. He made some comment about Echo's choice in drink, but the words never seemed to enter his ears. He took the cold bottle and laid it down, placing his forehead on top of it. It's getting harder, he thought, to act so happy, when I'm so miserable on the inside. He groaned as loud as he could, but the sound was lost to the song that pounded and echoed behind him.

Toao noticed all the happy people on the dance floor, many of them seemed intoxicated with happiness. He sniffed and the strong smell of liquors floated across his nose. He scrunched it against the smell. He was never one to drink... Too many bad experiences from others he had heard about when they had decided to just have a "small drink".
The band that was playing was smashing but it appeared that they were on their last song for the night. He watched the band, entranced by their sound when a particular noodle up on the stage caught his eye, the lead guitarist. He seemed to be the only "sober" one of the group. The band finished the song and they all walked off the stage swaying back and forth except of the guitarist. Toao watched him as he approached the bar and gestured for a bottle of some sort.
Toao approached the bar to the stool next to him and spotted what the man was drinking. "Water eh? Just the thing to drown ones sorrows in." He joked lightly. "Hey bartender, hit me up with one of what he's having!" Toao turned toward the other noodle and gestured toward the stage. "Great set up there, I really enjoyed listening to it."

Echo turned his head to look at the noodle sitting next to him. He gave a half-hearted smile at his joke. Was he trying to cheer him up? "Thanks, the pay's not great, but we get all the drinks we want." He patted the bottle and sighed. Not the best joke, but he didn't want to scare the guy off with his self-pity.
He didn't usually allow himself to be mopey around others, but he figured the guy must have seen him lying about instead of dancing or hanging out with the other groups. Echelon turned on his side, keeping his head on the cool water bottle. "I've never seen you here before. Did you just find out about this place? He paused to dry off his sweaty palms, and extended his paw. "My name's Echelon, but you can call me Echo."

Toao chuckled at the other noodles joke, at least this guy was willing to talk to him, off to a decent start for the evening. He opens his own water bottle that the bartender drops off and takes a swig as the other asks him a question. "My sister, Seimei, you might know her. A stunning noodle, a goddess of plants, nature, and eternal flirtation." He smiles at the thought of his younger step-sister prancing around showing off her wings and stylish haircut to all who will see. "She comes here from time to time to hit up the crowds and recommended it to me. Hence..." he spread out his arms to encompass the place, "here I am."
He shook Echo's paw, "My name is Toao." He looked into the other noodles eyes, "so I heard you slinging some soul music up there, and it had to come from somewhere." He pointed at the other noodles chest, "did it come from in there?" He didn't mean to pry, but he felt like he could understood and could connect with this noodle.

Echo gave a small smile and nodded, which looked a bit awkward since he still had his head on the bottle. "I've seen her, but I haven't spoken to her. I'm usually on stage when she comes. Everyone seems to love giving her attention." He was starting to feel a little better, physically. The heat of the stage no longer bothered him, so Echelon sat up and drank from his bottle. When Toao mention the source of his music Echo turned his head to fully look at him. He heard it... Not many Noodles asked, or even seemed to hear the heart and soul in his music. He couldn't even remember the last time anyone had, emotionally, gotten this close to him and his music.
"Oh jeez! What the...!" Echo leapt up as the icy water dripped down his chest. He had turned his head, but forgotten to move the water bottle and accidently dumped some of the contents on himself. "Sorry about that," he dusted what water he could off himself and sat back down. Echelon took a breath to steady his sudden bought of nerves and chase the heat that sudden came to his face. "Yes, every note I've ever sung or played has come from within me. When I..." He paused. Am I really going to tell all this to a stranger I just met? Echo glanced Toao. Something inside him said 'yes,' and he found himself continuing his story.
"When I was young, I wasn't good at anything. I wasn't athletic, or smart, or popular. One day I walked by the choir room and when I heard them singing...everything changed. The teacher heard me singing along outside the door and almost begged me to join. Even though I'd never listened to the song before, I knew the words and the tune. I could feel it flowing through me. I'd never been so happy before. My family wasn't happy...whenever I sang or played a song, they pestered me to 'stop making such noise' or 'quit that hideous racket.'" He sighed, "Of course, I now know that my family was tone deaf. To a degree that made music sound bad to them. But at the time I couldn't understand. Finally I just gave up. I stopped fighting them, I stopped singing and listening to music. Suddenly, I heard it everywhere. Every footstep was a drum beat. Every sound or conversation became lyrics and a song. I was driving myself mad. Then...she came."
Echelon's eyes found a spot in the distance, something only he could see. "She told me not to hold back, my music would bring great things and denying it would only bring misery to everyone around me. We began secretly meeting in a nearby park. I would perform and she would listen, or sing along. She was the one who gave me the nickname Echo. Because I could echo any song I heard perfectly, or even better." His mouth twitched and a sad smile played across his lips. "We were planning to move away together and live off my music, but as soon as we told our parents about it..." Echo shook his head, "They put a stop to it. My parents, because they hated music, and her parents, because they thought of music as a dead end job. She was the only one who believed in me. So we decided to run away. We were supposed to meet up in our usually spot. I waited for her, and waited for her, and waited, but..."
His face darkend, "She never came. A ghost of the girl I loved came to me and told me how stupid I was to think that she would come with me. That spark in her eyes was gone, her shine and smile...I...I left alone that night. In the cold and the rain, with nothing but the guitar she had bought me. My first instrument." Echelon thought of it, tucked away in a corner of his room. "And just last week, I shared a drunken one night stand with my roommate. I've always told myself that love should be forever and, after that happened, I feel like I've somehow betrayed myself. I vowed never to drink alcohol ever again...but," He scratched the back of his neck, "I don't know, sometimes I hate myself for what I recently did, and other times I think it might have been a blessing in disguise." He looked at Toao, "What do you think?"

Toao laughed lightly at the first comment, that sounded exactly like his sister Seimei to a T. Toao laughed a bit harder, his sides shaking and his paw held up to his mouth as he tried to stifle the laugh, the other noodle must've been deep in thought if he hadn't noticed the water. Man it felt good to laugh again.
Toao began to somber up as Echo started talking, his face softening in understanding of exactly what this other noodle had been through.
Toao's nose and mouth twitched as he tried to hold back tears of understanding. The only thing he could muster was a hug. He reached out and hugged Echo, not caring what the other thought of this action. "I'm so so sorry for what you've been through," he chocked out, still holding the hug.

Echo's lip trembled as he hugged him back. It wasn't often he was hugged out of compassion. Actually, he'd never received compassionate hugs before because he'd never shown this side of himself to anyone. The tears slowly began to flow down his cheeks and off his chin. "Please don't be sorry, it's not your fault. No offence, but I'm not ever sure why I told you all of that." The tears came faster as a lump began to form in his throat making it hard to swallow. "I'm the one who should be sorry. You probably came here to have a good time, instead you're sitting here with me, listening to me talk about my miserable past..." Echelon looked up at Toao their noses almost touching. "Why are you still here?" He didn't mean to sound rude, but his mind was like a live wire, buzzing with questions. Searching for the one that would answer why this Noodle, whom he barely even knew, was sitting here quietly listening to him bleed his life before him.

Something wet hit Toao's shoulder and he couldn't hold back his tears any longer either. He cried, not caring what other people around them thought of two grown men crying. This meant something, he knew it did. "No. No no no." He shook his head and then slowly moved out of the hug. He smiled and looked at Echo. "Your music has soul because this is all inside you. The only way you've ever been able to express it is through your music." He reached out and touched the place where Echo's heart was. "By telling me you're cleansing this. Your releasing your sorrows and sadness. You're accepting it. You're allowing yourself to possibly feel again. To maybe move on."
He smiled at the other noodle, his own tears having stopped almost as fast as they began. "I understand. I understand so well." He removed his paw and took a sip of water.
"I once knew a noodle when I was small." He smiled remembering running around as a kit. "Her name was Rayna and she was best friends with my adopted sister Rimi. I grew up surrounded by love for both of them, but my love for Rayna as I aged became something more, something more powerful than I could understand. I fell head over heels for her and when I told her... She just walked away and left me standing there." A single tear fell from his eye. "I was terribly depressed and my human brought home one day a small tea pot for me. From it grew a pig that I named Nessta, seemingly my only friend in the world. I spent all my time with Nessta and she made me smile. She made me believe in something again." He looked up at the bar, all the lights reflecting off the different colored bottles. "That's when I met Maheya. She was a sweet noodle and helped me find my feet again. We were just friends, but one day she just left, just like Rayna, never to be heard from again." A second tear fell. "Nessta and I spent several weeks in the house together with no reason to go out. I never wanted to go out. Ever. I felt that all these women just wanted to take advantage of me... Of my feelings. That no one actually "cared" about me except Nessta. My human had boyfriends and was happy with her own life, Rimi found a mate and had a son. It was only me and Nessta. One day Rimi brought over her mate and her mate's adopted sister Roxie. She was intrigued with me, with my silence, my mopping. And everyday she'd just come and stare at me and smile. Sometimes she'd say 'hello', but I never answered her and just pretended she didn't exist. Eventually she stopped coming over all together, and I was okay with that." He looked back at Echo now, his face stern. "It's been a couple years now since all that happened and I feel myself hardened inside. But I'm ready to give life a chance again. I can't have a life and just grow old living in my house. I need to be out. I need to be free again. Hence..." He trailed off, his story had come to an end.

Echelon sniffled and blinked blurry eyed at Toao. He’d never had such a deep personal conversation with anyone before. Toao’s words lifted his heart and made him feel better. Echo felt that if he had shared his story this way, with anyone but the guy before him, he would not feel this strong sense that he truly understood him. He rubbed the tears from his eyes and listened quietly to Toao tell his story. No wonder he understands me so well. He’s been though the same thing I have. Only more times.
He shook his head. "I’m the one who should be sorry. I was so busy wallowing in my own misery, I didn’t even think that anyone else had been through the same thing I had." Echo took a swig from his water bottle and set it back down. "I’m not usually this selfish. I’m usually the guy looking out to help others." Resting his hand on Toao shoulder, he managed a small smile. "You’re a stronger man than I am. You decided to move past your past on your own. I, on the other hand, ignored it, drowned it with alcohol, and wallowed in it when it got hard to ignore. I didn’t even realize that parts of it were beginning to bleed out into my music."

He bowed his head, almost ashamed of the pain his words seemed to be causing upon the other. But he shook his head and set a paw on his shoulder, he wasn't upset, he almost seemed, relieved. Toao managed a small smile. "It isn't easy. Moving on, finding yourself, learning to love and accept yourself again." He choked on the last bit but then cleared his throat out again.
Toao reached up his own paw onto the other's shoulder. "But your allowing it to bleed into your music allowed us to come together like this, it almost seems like fate huh?" He laughed. He didn't know if he believed in fate, destiny, or even true love anymore at this point. He'd been hurt so many times over and over again that it all just seemed like a fictionalized concept, like the fairy tales, told to children to give them hope.

Echelon simply stared sadly at Toao. He’d never tried moving on. He’d always carried his past on his back and used his talent to distract people from asking personal questions. Echo had never tried to do any of those things, so nodding in agreement would have basically lying to Toao and he wasn’t about to do that. His ears perked, fate? Could that be what this is? He thought about it. Was there anything besides fate that could have brought them together? He hadn’t meant to express more than he usually did through his music and it just so happened that Toao decided to come to this bar right when he’d be performing. How else could it all be explained? There was logic, but he’d been living off that for so long… ”I think fate would be the best way to describe this.” Echo wanted to be honest with Toao, more than anyone else he knew. He felt that if he held back it would somehow ruin all that they’d just talked about. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a wallet and opened it. ”These are my kids,” he said handing him a picture. He didn’t even have to look to know what it looked like. Echelon had spent a lot of time staring at it trying to decide if this was some force of nature telling him to move one and accept his past. It was of Ashen carrying Hayden home from his second and last public performance. Hayden wore his broken guitar on his back, had a black eye, but was grinning from ear to ear. Ashen was smiling as Lupus tussled his hair. ”That’s him,” he told Toao, pointing at Lupus. ”We were both pretty drunk, but…it was the most fun I’d had with someone in ages.” He admitted a little sadly. ”For the past few months I’ve been trying to decide if I want to risk being hurt again and try to let myself move on and be truly happy. I guess I’m just really scared of getting hurt.” He removed his paw from Toao’s shoulder and let his head droop. ”I wish I wasn’t such a coward.”

Toao's eyebrows raised and his ears perked up as the other stated his first sentence. So he does believe in fate... Toao wondered yet again if he still did. He knew he had once, but look where that'd left him. If he believed in a higher being, he would've cursed their demented form of fate, it was twisted and cruel. But... Maybe that was the true definition of fate all along. Like a roller coaster, it leads you up first to ecstasy to only drop you down again; but you had to remember that there was always another hill of happiness to climb. That at the end of the ride they had to end you at a high place, otherwise the ride wouldn't start correctly for the next person.
The next thing that Echo did though, truly shocked him, so much that he wasn't prepared for it. He let his arms drop down from Echo's shoulders as Echo reached into his pocket and pulled out a wallet. Toao's eyebrows rose at first thinking he was about to be ditched here at the bar, after all of that. That, Echo was going to pay and run, get out while he still had a shred of masculinity left. Toao wouldn't blame him honestly... Instead, he did the exact opposite thing.
Toao accepted the picture from Echo, carefully and looked down at it. It looked like... a family. He took in a sharp in-take of a breath. Echo had a family... That's all he had ever wanted. His eyes filled with tears again, even though he had promised himself no more. He brought a paw up to his mouth to stifle the pathetic sound that was forming there. "You have a family." He croaked up. The statement was neither a question nor truly a statement itself and he could feel it hanging in the air. Not sure what to make of it, even though he had posed it. A tear escaped down his cheek and fell onto the photo. He looked up at Echo, "You have felt a strong enough love to make a family."

Echo sighed and shook his head, "It was love that lasted long enough to make a family, but not the strong enough to keep us together. We hang out every once and a while with the kids, but they've grown up...moved on. It's just not the bond I've been searching for...Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but..." He pursed his lips and tried to think of a way to explain himself. A long time ago, he'd felt an incredible bond that was torn from him in the most painful way possible. The memory of that feeling had dulled over the years, but was recently brought back by what happened between him and Lupus. But after their hangovers wore off, the feeling was gone. Now the realization of the loss of that feeling was more alive in him than ever, but he had no one to recreate a lasting one with.
"You see-" Echo looked up at Toao to see him crying. His heart clenched. Did he say something wrong? Was it the photo? And, more importantly, what could he do to fix what it was he did wrong? His mouth turned dry and he forgot whatever it was he was going to say. Echelon's mouth opened and closed a few times, but nothing came out. He thought about the time Ashen had ruined one of Hayden's performances. He'd never felt so helpless before, but here he sat feeling the same way all over again. This time, though, he couldn't just tell Lupus to go talk to Ashen. This was different, Toao wasn't a child. He blinked as a thought came to mind. Echo took the photo from Toao and looked at it for a moment before hiding it back in his wallet. He shifted for a moment, collecting his thoughts before asking, "That's it, isn't it? You...you want a family, don't you?"

Toao listened to Echo talk, something had begun to hurt in his chest and it seemed to be trying to pull him apart, away from what was hurting him. But, his mind told him to stay. He felt conflicted. He wanted to run, he didn't want to be hurt again. This was hurting him, but why couldn't he just turn away? He could pull into himself again. Run back to Nessta, his bear that would always love him.
Toao had been spacing out, but looked back at Echo in time to see a striken-look with a pained expression cross his face. He quickly tucked the photo away and then hesitated before asking Toao his next question. Toao tensed as the words came out, but his heart almost felt a sigh of relief. What was going on with his emotions? With his body? With his mind?! He felt like he had no control over himself. "A family..." He tripped over the words, trying them out. That's when the tears began to flow hardier, longer, faster. His whole body let out a sigh of relief, finally in sway with each other. He wanted a family. How could he not have realized this before now? He wanted someone to unconditionally love, and who would unconditionally love him in return.
He looked Echo straight in the eyes. "Yes, I do want a family." He couldn't help himself. He reached out and hugged Echo tightly.
