I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so if I'm wrong please correct me. Also, before I get started, yes I know I have other builds recently posted in this guild and that is because I'm trying out several builds to see which one I like most. Now on to what I was thinking. I wanted to build a magical character (obviously) and I wanted it to focus on Destruction, Sneak, Illusion, Alchemy, and Light Armor (I hate using robes because they seem to offer no protection) for starters. I want to know which race to choose for this and maybe how to effectively play it without having my butt handed to me. I was thinking of joining the Companions because of the Werewolf perk and later on the Mage's College due to being a spellcaster once I get a high enough level. I was also wondering at which level should I join the College and the Companions and when to see the Greybeards? I could use all the help I can get because I'm new to the Elder Scrolls.

Honestly Altmer is your best choice for a pure mage playthrough in skyrim. but if you want a good all around character for later on when you wish to change it up Manmer is your best choice for a spellsword.
redface So sorry I just glanced at your post and didn't read it all before... Didn't know you were knew to the worl of Tes so let me give you a bit more info.First off an Altmer is a high elf it has the highest stats for magika when you start off and it Race powers add a permenent +50 and also there power let's you regenorate magika faster. The extra spell you get is fury which can come in handy in a tight spot when you are surrounded.
Now on to the Manmer also known as Bretons they also have high stats in all things magika but focus more on conjuration. This happens to be my fav. Race since they are well suited to be w/e you need them to be. They have a natural magika resistence which is really handy since a couple ice spells can take you down. There extra spell is to conjure a fimiliar which is nice to have an extra hand. There power is to absorb damage a bit better for a w hile.
So there you have it for the best mage races as for when to join the guilds I would wait as long as you want to I wait untill around level forty to do most things since weapons mostly max out around there.

Bretons are a good race for mage classes and I think they have a resistance to fire or something that could be useful (not sure about resistance, never actually played Breton).

Personally I'd recommend playing Argonian with this class build as they do have some skills in magic (illusion,....destruction and restoration...maybe?) They are quite good for skills such as sneak, one handed and light Armour though. Argonians are also resistant to most diseases and poisons and can breathe underwater, which is pretty cool.

I mostly always play a stealthy mix class argonian though but Breton is a good choice if your'e not particularly into lizard people.

As for quest order, the college of Winterhold has some pretty neat power items for mages so completing this questline could put you in good stead for the main quest. Bear in mind though, there is a point in the main quest that can make life difficult for magic or stealth mixed characters.

What point is difficult for stealth/ mage classes? I'd like a heads up.

Just a heads up: I don't know how to put spoiler boxes up so slight spoilers ahead.

Right near the end of the main quest line you have to enter Sovengarde (the nordic afterlife) to talk to the original heroes and have the final battle with Alduin. Getting through most sovengarde is easy enough (this is one of the two places where Clear skies is useful) until you get to the 'whale bridge' right before entering the hall of Valor.

It is here that you encounter Tsun. Tsun guards the bridge to the hall and the only way across the bridge is to defeat him in combat, this leads you into a fight against a high level melee focused character who can see you at close range as the fight starts after a triggered conversation with him. This was the part I found hard with my mixed stealth character, at level 46.

A more focuesd magic character may have fewer problems with him though.

What about a warrior/magic character like a Sorcerer, Shaman (probably a Breton with light enchanted armor for a Shaman Build), Spellsword, or Battlemage?

Thanks Kbeach28, I'll have to remember that for next time smile

As for the character builds that you've mentioned Nightshroud01, I haven't actually played either of those builds (or played skyrim in a while), but if you have a focused leveling plan and stick to it up to this point you will probably do ok. I highly reccomend the fire rune spell if you plan on using the destruction school though.
