The summer night was balmy, though "balmy" implied either a feeling of peace or one of romantic excitement. A balmy evening should be one more pleasant than this. As it was, this evening was warm and heavy, like a winter coat in a forest fire. It was almost oppressively hot, and not for the first time, Feral der Martertod wished he could strip his skin from his flesh and feel a refreshing breeze all over his body. But that required a breeze.
It would also require effort. It wasn't that Feral was lazy, per say, just that Feral didn't like taking any action that he didn't deem strictly necessary. And "necessary" described very few things to the lyra stallion. Truth be told, for something to be necessary, he would have to care. Care about other people, or care about himself. Care about inner herd politics, or care about the arguments going on between the various knights and soldiers within the Shadow Herd. As it was, he found himself incapable of caring, and thus he had found himself wandering the outskirts of a meadow some distance away from where the rest of the herd had settled down for the night.
At first, he thought he was alone. Blessedly, wonderfully alone for the first time in a while. Their herd leader was not fond at all of the idea of her subjects spending time unsupervised by one of her goons. Thus, Feral had welcomed the opportunity to get away from it all. He had then found, to his chagrin, that there was no chance of that. He could sense another star in the meadow, somewhere nearby. He looked around the moonlit meadow searching for the other presence.

Valdis stood beneath the thick trees her coat camouflaging her amongst the darkness, a glance of her mask might tell someone there was a deer nearby however illuminated in moonlight she was another story entirely to most she was a menace, a creature to be feared, her hair was long with blood streaks through the same could be said for her mask and wings. Thus she hid herself amongst the darkness something she was very familiar with. the bell on her tail chimed eerily and echo as a gentle wind picked up the sound betraying the direction of her presence. Though the mare didn't even move, she stood stiller than her mothers bones.
Draped across her back she carried two bags full of herbs and supplies a bowl to crush the leaves and other tools of her trade, for being such a strange creature she had become a healer of sorts, and was very in touch with the spirits, her mother was dead, her father alive she and her brother who seemed so far lost were the products of a mishap. Strange, yet she still sought her revenge drawn mother and wished to help her, she sometimes wasn't sure what she was doing, though her travels in search for a special herb brought her dangerously close to this shadow herd it was dangerous...
Sensing the other nearby dilated eyes searching quickly for the source of the presence she felt just as it searched for her. His bright colors however made it much easier for her to spot the bright orange and blue lyra. He was most likely from the herd, hopefully she would be able to slip away without being noticed if she stayed well to the shadows...

The other presence was a lyra/arcturus cross with an unusual skull mask on her face. A mare, and not one he recognized. The sound of her bell, he now realized, had been chiming eerily for some time. He had mistaken it for a cricket or a night bird, but now, by the barest hint of the moon's light, he could see the glint off the golden metal. Likely, she could see the glint of light off of his peculiar visor, which he had settled over his eyes this evening.
She was a stranger. An intruder, though the smell of blood from her and the eerie way she moved through the thick trees felt comforting and familiar to a stallion born and raised in the Shadow Herd. It seemed more natural than the way the Sunflare herd carried themselves--and smelled. But she was a stranger nonetheless, and though he might not be a soldier in his mother's army, Feral was a member of the herd, and things would go poorly for him if he were to allow her to walk on their territory.
"I know you're there," he called out in a bored tone of voice. "You are intruding on our land, and we would rather you didn't." It was a weak threat (so weak it wasn't really a threat at all), but he was making it for show. This wasn't his job. He wasn't even sure what his job was supposed to be.

Valdis didn't say anything for a time as she continued searching his voice betrayed his boredom, did he truly care she was here? Valdis was a mare of few words only the necessities needing to be said what more was there? It was more of her appearance, she had become a warrior for her mothers sake, at least that's what she remembered, though she much preferred healing she wasn't going to leave without the herb.
"Poor voice for a threat" she answered finally calm and evenly distracted by looking at the leaves of the plants below her feet " I am only here for a herb," she used her horn to open one of the satchels on her back which was filled with dried herbs "I will be gone shortly." She continued searching.
Now how reasonable would he be? He seemed to have quite a bit of apathy was it toward her presence, he didn't look like a warrior either if it came down to it she would be able to take him down easily.

The mare wasn't stopping--rather, she was coming closer, and it seemed she was looking at the ground for something. For what, Feral neither knew nor cared. He knew nothing of healing, herbs, or medicine. She could be looking for magic exploding mushrooms, for all he knew. Either way, he didn't like the idea that she would only be gone "shortly." He wanted her gone now, with one of those peculiar, random insistent desires. She was intruding on Shadow territory, and he was the one to get in trouble. Probably with Retinadeath, the general. And he...hated any situation that brought him into contact with Retinadeath. Just...hated. It was bad, and he didn't like it.
"I know," he said evenly. "I'm not a warrior. I'm a courtier. Fighting is for the mentally challenged goons in the army. I'm just not supposed to fall asleep and let us get attacked by some careless intruder who doesn't know when to leave. You're intruding on our territory. Please do not make me raise the alarm. We don't like strangers, whatever their purpose for coming here." Raising the alarm would require shouting or screaming, and he'd have to take off, and while flying was no problem for him, it would be tricky in this thick patch of forest. Then he'd have to find the nearest guard on duty, and if he recalled correctly, that would be--oh, it would be Saltic, wouldn't it? His nephew who looked like an inverse of him. He hated Saltic so much. It was as if the fawning sycophant was determined to be the inverse of his personality as well as his pelt.

"I am not attacking you," Valdis paused confused for a moment as she looked at him as he continued it made more sense, this herd was just overly protective of their boarder as she had herd, which meant making her search for this herb all the more difficult but he seemed rather apathetic and uncaring perhaps she could reason with him to that extent were he wouldn't have to put in any extra effort. "Then if I was escorted I wouldn't be a threat, and in turn you wouldn't have to raise the Alarm or summon your warriors to be rid of me."
She started looking around again for her herb "You just have to stand there as I search, I promise not to leave your vision." not that he would take her word just meeting her but it is a she would say, she needed this herb for someone and she couldn't allow herself to return without it, let that poor soul die in her care, this stallion may not care for others, but to some extent the half undead creature did, a present from her father, a beating heart and feelings.
her ears were sure to be angled for his answer she dare not miss it, in case she may have to speed up her search and risk missing the plant on the outskirts to go deeper into the herd territories to find it her bell continued to chime eerily as her horn began to glow to allow her some light...

The glow from the intruder's horn helped lighten up the darkness and illuminate the mare's face. He wondered what sort of creature had died for her mask, and why she wore it. Was it to hide her face? Had something terrible happened? Was it for a ceremonial purpose, or just to intimidate? It looked like a deer skull with extra bits added on for horns. Or maybe it was the skull of some half-solara, half-deer starborn. Huh. Looked pretty fearsome. Meh.
Feral gave a tortured sigh and looked around at the ground. It seemed she wouldn't leave, not until she found her damn herb. That could take forever at this rate, and he was already tired of her. "What does it look like?" he growled. With that, he stepped out of the thicket he'd been standing behind and began to half-heartedly dig at the leaf litter. "Since it seems you won't leave until you find your plant, I suppose I might as well help you. Would suit both our purposes, and you have no idea how much I don't want to have to raise the alarm. I will if I have to, but I'd rather take a course of action that does not require me to raise the alarm." The explanation came as second nature. Anyone who wanted to be anyone in his herd had to be prepared to justify their actions and allay suspicion.

Dilated eyes glanced from time to time up at the stallion now that her horn was glowing he seemed to be showing some interest in it then he seemed to shrug it off apathetically. "I was born with it it's always been apart of me, I don't know what my face looks like." she explained as simply as she could while she was searching her eyes focused again on what she was looking for.
Valdis almost rolled her eyes, he seemed like he was over exhausting himself just watching her. "It's called Clary Sage" she replied in an even voice, she hardly raised her voice for anything, she never needed to if someone wanted to listen they would quiet down no matter how loud they were. "It's hard to find without it's flower..." she told him still looking back and forth "If I had to describe it..." she paused in thought for a moment raising her head to think, after all one couldn't think in the dirt very well. "it's very hairy, with large, oval, light green, leaves."
Valdis tilted her head "Are you unhappy in your home?" she asked showing some interest before looking around at the plants at her feet moving methodically.

Feral stopped dead in his tracks to stare at the mare. She was...talking about her mask, right? He hadn't said a single word about it! Could she read his mind? Was that what was going on here? Spooky. Unnatural. Now, more than ever, he wanted her gone, away from here, to go away and never return. No star had any right to be reading another's mind. If she could read minds...what was she picking up from his?
With new-found motivation, he savagely kicked aside leaves and loam searching for the hairy plant. Stupid, pushy, intruding, disrespectful, rude, uncivilized...There, that plant matched her description somewhat. He ripped it out of the ground from the root and stormed over to her, dumping it at her feet. "What I am is none of your business," he snarled. "This herd is my place, and the way I choose to live in it is my own way. You have no right to question the workings of the Shadow. Is this the plant you seek?" He kicked it towards her and fluffed out his wings in an aggressive display. Normally, the cold-hearted stallion could not be provoked, but she had pressed his buttons in exactly the wrong way.

It was always the same. Valdis could hear him stop, "I cannot read your mind, your motions provide all I need to know." she explained before he became hostile, she continued her search. The mare paused as the plant was thrust at her hooves, raising her head she watched him.
Valdis wasn't one to get angry easily, she couldn't quite grasp what she'd said to upset him. What was it she was supposed to do in such a situation, ah right it was apologize.
"I apologize for upsetting you," she spoke softly, placing the plant into one of her bags. "thank you." she said moving back toward the boarder at a steady speed "I will leave now as promised." Hopefully she wouldn't have to return again for a while, this plant would be enough she fluttered her eerie wings as she walked this time not bothering to conceal herself in shadow.

Feral watched the strange mare leave with a shudder of apprehension. Though he tried to keep his face calm despite the treacherous shiver that swept through his body, inside his mind he was boiling with emotion. Shock, anger, fear even. He'd never felt afraid. Never! It was an unnatural emotion for him,and he wanted it, and the mare who caused it, gone.
Only after the shaman had disappeared did he turn back to the herd. Time for sleep, if he could find it. Time to find some solace somewhere, curled up alone in his--No! Not alone! But the uneasy feeling that the mare had been reading his mind--even if by her admission she had not--lingered in his mind. Right. He could trust no one. No one could be trusted. Ever.
It was time to go back to the herd, and hope, pray that when he woke up this eerie encounter had all been just a nightmare.
