He had stared at the messages on his phone, guided the menu to respond, and stood there with his thumbs raised above the keyboard expectantly for a handful of seconds - only to shut the phone and toss it away, or pocket it, or otherwise rid his hand of the damn thing several times over the course of the first day back. He made excuses for himself: too world-weary, too exhausted, too . . . something. Empty. Hollow. Something like that. He'd sleep it off and then get back to Bells in a better mood, or at least one less drained.

Only when he woke up the next day, that same dull ache remained, gnawing a hole at his core with impunity. And he'd look to the mark atop his right hand, the softly glowing blue crystal hanging from his necklace, remember Medea's speech, and give a deep sigh. Such was the price for power: a little corruption. But he could deal with that. He had dealt with worse on this path.

So it was that after he took a well-needed shower, dried off, and changed, at last the zomboil found it in him to turn his phone on and respond to Belladonna's concerned texts.

Text to Bells
Back. Your room or mine?

And even that short message sapped his strength, the looming and long conversation they were going to have ominously hanging over him. Not even Lanna's attentions were able to despoil the gray clouds.

"MOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!!" The young witch leaned across the space that separated her mother from her and gave the older witch a good shove to the shoulder. The mother blinked and turned to her daughter, gave her a pointed look of 'A few more minutes', of which the daughter replied with her own look of 'Hell no!', before the mother turned back so that her face was pointed away from her daughter and half out of the car window.
The car itself was an old fashioned hearse, far too long in the back to carry anything but dead bodies and quite a lot of luggage, all black and covered with curling gold lines.
It was also known as The Divine Family's Mode of Transportation.
Well, Mode of Transportation that could carry the entire family. Granted, the entire family was not currently in the car. It was only Mama Divine and Belladonna, who was nearly bouncing in her seat. But not in her usual bouncy manner, this was a nervous bounce. A ready to be back to school bounce.

Of course, the young demon man who leaned against the side, one arm expertly propped atop the car and his face craned in so he could see both mother and bouncing daughter, didn't care one jot. The longer he got to keep these beauties, the better off he'd be. Maybe he could even convince them to get out of the car. The little red head looked feisty as hell and he certainly liked the heat.
"Mother. Please. I've got to get back." Belladonna hissed in a low voice, her eyebrows crumbled. She shot a glare to the demon and almost stuck out her tongue at him. He could keep his leers and stupid nice suit and those flexing hands and flipping tail that belied his calm demeanor.
"Oh honey, your school will be there. Calm down." Mama Divine replied as she placed a hand under her chin. "You mentioned... Business? What kind of business do you run?"
"Well, its really a fabulous concept--"
"GOOD HECATE, MOTHER. He is half your age! Are you drunk? Is this why you're doing this? I WILL DRIVE THIS HEARSE IF I NEED TO."

Both Demon and Mother blinked and stared at Belladonna, who only sat there, fists clenched and face slightly pink. Her mother let out a small, embarrassed giggle and flapped at the demon before she rolled up the window and blocked him out.
"That was totally uncalled for. He could have been a new client. We need to expand the business."
"School, please." Was all Belladonna could reply with, her voice strained and hurried.
Mama Divine only rolled her eyes and set her mouth into a frustrated line of resignation as she maneuvered the hearse toward Amityville. Now that the car was in motion, the young witch's hands released around her phone, which revealed the reply to Mort.

Yip? Lanna's curious nose prodded his leg. Whiiiiine.

Mort absentmindedly pet her, reading the text with a shadow of amusement passing over his features. It was so much like when he had taken his own vacation and had to engineer it so that Bells and Ramina didn't meet when he returned. Though fifteen or twenty minutes...he ought to make his way over then, to make up for his slow pace. That, and lingering in his room was suddenly beginning to feel claustrophobic and stale when minute before he had been perfectly fine.

Then again it had been a week or so since he saw her. Some eagerness was to be expected, dreaded conversation topics or not.

He took another cursory glance in the bathroom mirror, paused, and skid the necklace with his fragmet off, setting it inside one of the drawers. Much as he didn't want to part with it, having something potentially powerful and dangerous outside, when he was barely beginning to understand it...It was better off here. And as for the mark on his hand, gloves would have to do for now.

AyeAvast
On my way. Will wait at your door unless you give me mom alert

Ruffling Lanna's head in passing, Mort headed out and locked the door behind him. The trip to he reaper dorms was I eventful, though self consciously he kept picking at his right hand as if the sigil would burn its way through the glove and betray him. With a hastened pace the zomboil stood before Belladonna's room before long, willing himself to calm down and stop being so fidgety. What was he so nervous about?

Nothing. Everything. Jackdamnit. His brain hummed with the anxious energy, granting him a small headache as he leaned against the wall and continually checked his phone.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 04, 2012 9:26 pm

After hitting every. Single. Red light. on the way to Amityville, and after quite a lot of groaning from Belladonna (and a few angry remarks from Mama Divine), the hearse finally rolled as slowly as possible into the school. With a small shriek of equal parts glee and dismay, Belladonna jumped from the car and set about pulling out her luggage. Mama Divine at least had the wherewithal to flick her finger once so that the back door flung open for her daughter, but she didn't bother to help. Her magic would only go so far and she figured Belladonna could get her things on her own.
"Bells, dear. Next time we meet a young demon man don't make a fool of yourself. Or me." Her mother pushed some black hair from her shoulder, obviously not the one to bestow upon her daughters the blood red locks. "We need to expand the business and if that involves a bit of harmless flirting, then so be it." A pause as she leaned out of the window to look back. "Do you need help?"

Yes, yes she needed quite a lot of help, actually.
Belladonna had packed two full trunks of clothing and three duffle bags of various things. (Namely, more clothing. But a great deal of books too.) She had managed to drag the trunks out of the hearse and piled the bags on top, but how was she going to get them up to her room?!
"Of course not! I've got MAGIC!!" Belladonna said in an overly exuberant voice. With light steps she ran to the front of the hearse and pressed a kiss to her mother's cheek. "Thanks for the ride. But I'll manage on my own from here. Have a safe trip home and um... Love you."

Mama Divine blinked her pink eyes for one moment but bestowed her daughter with a warm smile and a peck to the forehead.
"Do well, sweetness." She sing-songed as she waved goodbye and slowly pulled the hearse from the school.
Left alone with two trunks and three bags, Belladonna looked... Troubled.
But that was fixed with a quick text.

Ol-j-man

Actually, could you meet me outside the dorms? I can't carry all my bags in at once... Mother's already left.

The wait dragged out to the point of being maddening, like hours were passing instead of minutes. The zomboil fidgeted, twitched, and even casted glances down the hall in case she had forgotten to text him of her arrival, which she wouldn't, this was Bells he was talking about here, that one time she went straight to his door instead was just a fluke, just chill out -

And then, the fateful flash and rumble on his phone put him at ease, and the message read while he walked away from the dorm - and then, ironically, left without a response to let her know he was coming. It didn't take Mort long to get outside and an even shorter time to locate the conspicuous red hair, and he strode with purpose to meet the witch. Nothing else mattered: not the luggage, nor the troubled look on her face, nor the fact that he might have looked a bit too determined to make it start the reunion off happily. What mattered was that the second Bells was in arm's reach he pulled her into a tight embrace that lifted the ghoul off her feet - close to Death Grip proportions, but closer to bear hugs.

"Missed you," he murmured into her hair, as if that wasn't obvious enough, refusing to let her go even if she struggled. At least she was whole. Here. Untouched by the Hunters. He nudged past her hair and planted a kiss on her cheek. "Am allowed carry both you n' luggage yes?" Because he didn't want to let go.

Though he was a zombie, Belladonna didn't really expect Mort to take long in returning to her. Thankfully, she was right and was rewarded with a far away sight of him. To make sure he saw her, she had hopped atop one of her trunks and stood with hands on hips, sure to spy him first. When she did, a large smile bloomed on her face and the witch waved a hand in the air and hopped a little, her hair cast about by the wind like a red flag against the grey sky.
Yet his purposeful walk set the witch at ease and she hopped back off the trunk as he drew nearer, but when she saw the look on his face, his grim set mouth and crumbled eyebrows, everything else vanished.
All her worry collided into one ball of fear and Belladonna set off in a startled run to cross the distance between them. She had just enough time to put out her arms before he snatched her up. A small cry burst forth, but it was happy and glad that he was safe, safe enough to hug her so tightly. Thankfully she had managed to get her arms around his neck, so Belladonna only pressed her chin onto his shoulder and breathed in that particular scent that belonged solely to Mort.

"I missed you too." She replied in an equally low voice, her cheek pressed against the side of his head and her fingers scrunched up in the back of his hoodie. At his question she laughed and tried to look back, but his grip was so tight that couldn't even budge one little bit, so she only laughed again. "Sure, if you want! But there's two trunks, three bags and one Belladonna, so your hands will certainly be full."
Speaking of hands... Mort was wearing gloves! How odd! He never wore gloves, not that Belladonna had noticed. Not even during prom, when it was the ultimate occasion for gloves. And certainly not during their steampunk plans had she given him the accessories. Had she known of his fondness for them, the witch would have bestowed them to his person long ago.

After another moment Belladonna let out a tiny squeal of pure glee and kicked her feet. It wasn't meant as a 'Put me down' gesture, so she quickly added a soft "Don't let go, I'm just... Glad you're here. And safe. And with me." Her face nearly burned with the blush, but she didn't care. After so long, she was really and truly happy.

The grim look melted into a grin at the sound of her laughter as he kissed her again, this time on the lips. "Should've mentioned luggage help before, then," Mort chided her teasingly, loosening his grip just enough for her to not have to have her face pressed into his clothes. "Would've brought Thor, make piece of cake for carrying everything." Though in reality even if she had, he still would have left the arm behind; he wanted to greet his ghoulfriend with both arms so that he would feel every moment together.

Thus he was more than happy to oblige her request. Mort craved his dose of happy after the recently harrowing events, and the longer he tarried outside the more he didn't have to think about how he would explain to Bells what she'd missed.

"So, how was trip?" he asked. "Must've been nice to get away for a while." Well, he assumed. Beaches weren't really his thing.

The kiss took the witch by surprise, mostly because he was the one who initiated and not she, but with a small start Belladonna managed to extract her arms and hands enough to angle his face back towards her's for more. After a few additional press of lips, the witch felt somewhat satisfied and gave him one last peck on the nose for good measure. Then, with all the simpering of someone much too giddy to pull of a proper pout, Belladonna looked up at him with wide eyes that begged forgiveness.
"I'm sorry! I thought I mentioned it, I suppose I didn't... I am sorry... But I thought we could do it together! Zombies are known for their strength and I was planning on helping too..."
And that was the truth! She had planned on carrying a few things. At least something...

But was he serious about carrying her and the luggage? Surely he was joking! .....Right?
It was probably best to find out as Belladonna hadn't yet learned the difference between Mort's jokes and Mort's serious phrases.
"Unless you were serious about carrying both me and the luggage... You weren't... Were you?"
She fixed him with a curious expression and waited.

"It was fun! The beach is gorgeous this time of year, all glistening black waters and warmth. And it was nice, but next year you'll have to come! You don't even have to go in the water if you don't want, or go in the sun. Delphinium stayed under the umbrella the entire time!" Nearly oblivious to the unhappy tale she knew was coming, Belladonna tittered on in a high voice as carefree as you please. "She was white as a ghost compared to the rest of us. And ooohhh~ You should have been there! Mother got drunker than usual and fell into the hotel pool!! I think Hemlock might have gotten video but I'll have to ask. It was hilarious!"

Had she mentioned it before? Maybe he'd missed it in his initial rush and following anxious wait at her door. Well, no matter, because kisses. Mort listened to her short tale and chuckled as he imagined the splash Mrs. Divine must have made. "Sounds tempting, but not really made for beach," he told her, his smile hiding the creeping nervousness at the idea of being around both bikinis and the ocean he so feared. "Sand not, ah, nice to skin, n' wet sand's worse. Plus afraid might discharge in water on accident." And nothing would ruin the vacation faster than frying his ghoulfriend and any surrounding people. Not to mention her parents would re-kill him and make sure he had no chance of reforming in a pumpkin patch.

"Also, could say am dead serious~" With an uncharacteristically cheeky grin, Mort shifted the witch from his front to onto his back, letting her piggyback as he waddled over to the luggage. Each piece was lifted in turn until he determined the two heaviest to carry. "Can carry the rest with magic?" he asked with a glance over his shoulder, grunting as he picked up the bags. "If need, c-can take third one."

Or a fourth. Or all five. He wanted to be an impressive strongman today, damn it!

"Oh... I suppose those are rather good reasons for not really liking the beach..." The witch replied, slightly subdued in her exuberance. Thankfully she hadn't full planned on such a thing as taking him to the beach, but well... It couldn't hurt to plan for a vacation, could it?
In any event, Belladonna wouldn't press it or even pretend to. Instead her chief concern was the cheeky grin from Mort and the silly joke. She giggled all the while she was hoisted to his back and locked her arms happily around his neck.
"Is this ok?" She asked as she wrapped her legs around his waist and situated herself so that one hand could help to levitate her bags.
"I think I can do it!"

Belladonna gave a flick of her wrist and two of the duffle bags shook in an excited manner, but didn't do much else. The witch narrowed her eyes at them and the bags shifted forward, but never left the ground. Huh... Well, so long as they followed along, even at a drag, Mort wouldn't have to carry them.
"No worries! I can move the bags." She chimed as she pressed her chest to his back and gave him a hug.
Oh Hecate, please don't have let anything too bad have happened to him...
With a hand that pointed toward the Reaper dorms, she let out a whoop and a great "To The Land of Cuddles! Where everything is warm except for Mort, but that's ok because I like him that way!"

Though he had never replied to her messages about the trip, Belladonna wouldn't be mad. She couldn't, not with everything that had happened. Maybe this fun little jaunt would help make his story easier, but she had this horrid feeling that something worse had happened... But she wouldn't tell Mort that. She'd be all smiles and giggles and hugs and kisses for the rest of forever if she needed to. If that's what he needed, she'd do it.

He gave the bags a look over just in case one was wavering dangerously from the spell; the last thing he wanted was to accidentally get tripped up by one while going up the stairs. Dragging on the ground was a bit risky . . . And only two of three were being affected. So with a grunt of effort, he transferred his current load to one arm, leaned over a bit, and snatched one of the remaining duffle bags, which was then hung around his neck. Hopefully Belladonna's spell worked on the remaining luggage.

"Mrrrr . . . Y-Yeah! Away!" Mort chimed in, trying not to sound strained as he turned and began to make his slow way back into the reaper dorms. Zombie strength or not, three bags and a ghoul were pushing it to the limit for him. He also would have to traverse the dreaded stairs over encumbered.

But . . . but strongman!

He didn't feel so much like a strongman, though, as he eased up each stair individually with clenched teeth. This was an awful idea. Terrible idea. What the hell. Aghhhhh.

"What . . . about . . . Binx?" the zomboil wheezed as he inched them closer to the witch's bedroom, the last bit of stairs slowly being trodden upon with a cacophony of loud steps and bags swinging into each other. Eventually, somehow, the pair stood before her door, Mort swaying in place from the exertion. He was pretty sure if he didn't put them down soon, the bag's strap would cut through his stitches and lop his head off in revenge.

At first the bags just kind of lazily slid across the ground after them, but once Mort set off across campus Belladonna gave them a glare and flicked her fingers forcefully. Like well trained Treats, they snapped to attention, levitated a few inches off the ground and followed the couple.
After that, it was a leisurely shuffle from the courtyard up to Belladonna's room. She chattered away in Mort's ear the entire time, her cheek pressed to the back of his shoulder in what she hoped to be perceived as a loving gesture.
"And Hemlock was soooo nice the entire time. Delphinium tried to be rude, but Hemlock put her in her place. Oh! And Papa got really sunburned, but they all turned to freckles the next day! It was sooo funny. He's the one all of us witchlings got our red hair from. His is this really pretty auburn color, he even twists it up into two little spikes, like demon horns!"
And on it went, every detail she could think of her trip, her entire front pressed firmly to his back. It was so sweet of him to carry her all the way up!

Finally they reached the door and with ginger hands, Belladonna slid from Mort's back and relieved him of the bag around his neck.
"I told Binx I would return tomorrow." She flung open the door and guided the levitating luggage into the room where it landed nicely. Free of the bags, she turned to face Mort and lifted an eyebrow, her mouth tilted up into a devil's smile. "That way we'd have a bit of privacy."

Mort listened to her rant in amicable silence, not having a real comment but bobbing his head every once in a while and enjoying the moment: the sound of her voice, the warm pressure of her body, the sense of normalcy surrounding them. It made the trip up the stairs much easier, and he would have done it again so long as she stayed with him. Her impish grin was met with a quirked brow and a little smirk of his own. "Naughty~" he teased as he stepped into the room, rolling his head and shoulders about until the popped.

Not that he would complain. Binx was like an overprotective parent with claws with a dry sense of humor, neither of which he felt at his best to deal with. "So . . . Where should sit for story time?" Mort asked, a little hesitant to move until a designated spot was chosen. "Is, ah, long. Should stay comfortable." Because Jack knew he wasn't going to be.

At his teasing Belladonna pouted and her face turned a bright shade of embarrassed pink.
"I didn't mean anything like that. You're the one who thought it." But she let it drop quickly as he mentioned Story Time. That awful feeling from earlier had returned, her stomach had dropped down to her knees and she turned away to look at her room. Really she was using the excuse to hide her face, the crumble of brows for something she couldn't explain and for all she knew, everything had gone fine.
In any regard, a multitude of clothes had been strewn about both the couch and bed, but there were fewer on the bed, so Belladonna opted for that. Quickly she grabbed the articles of clothing from the bed and tossed them to the couch. With her job done she crawled atop the billowy comforter and patted the space next to her, an indication that Mort should join her.

With a deep breath she settled in, wanting to both lean on him and look at him but not sure what was most comfortable for him.
"Thank you for carrying all my things... And me. If you... Um, want to lie in my lap you can." She offered, her petticoats and ruffley skirts all poofed up so that her lap did look like a big, fluffy pillow.
Of course, if he didn't that was ok too. She just wanted him to be comfortable, to offer him a safe place.
Maybe things were bad, things were scary, but if she could be somewhere where bad things didn't happen... If she could be the person he could turn to... Would that, would that be alright?
Maybe it was too soon for all of that. Maybe she should just smile and offer him her lap to lay his head for now and scratch his head if he did choose her lap.

"My pleasure," he answered in spite of the fact the he could feel the straps ingrained into his neck and arms. As she went about sweeping the bed of clothes, Mort slid his shoes off and nudged them against the wall, bending and cracking his toes and trying to check if they smelled - the shower had done him some good. At the invitation to lie down, he nodded and plopped himself on the bed to situate his head in her lap.

This was good. The way he could stare at something and not necessarily look at her reactions.

"Lanna missed you too," he added suddenly. A delay. Though what were the point of those now that she sat in anticipation? It was probably jus causing her more concern than necessary. Besides, the beginning wasn't so bad.

"Story comes in three parts," Mort began, lacing his fingers over his chest. "First part started when heard noises in Other Bathroom." He describe how a small group of them heard a mysterious voice harassing the secretary and how Arel had managed to warn them to leave before they were caught by speaking overly loud. From there the students  congregated in Arel's office for investigation. "Snatched apple cider bottle from desk," Mort said with a bit of a mischievous smile. Their search uncovered a hidden tunnel behind the bookcase, which had been lucky since I had to house the students when the mysterious voice had strode in and tore up the office.

In the tunnel they had found a strip of lockers with the names of the students from the Trance. He described to Bells how he had unlocked Callie's and found a backpack and mysterious gold chest he couldn't open, and how a mysterious light suddenly filled the corridor. The next thing he knew, he woke up in a vividly colorful land as a minipet.

"Yes. Minipet."

Mort told her how strange it was to be a Spoilers and how the area had been so intoxicatingly zen that he even had the guts to try flying  while carrying  whom he had followed about most of the way. "A-Actually felt nice," he confessed, knowing that his short time on the witch's broom had been met with mixed feelings. "Think will pursue wing project after all."

From there the pair had straggled after the group to a strange building full of puzzles, which he assumed they had decided to look at after investigating a strange old man who had been watching them and rambling about all sorts of strange things. It had been a small gauntlet of man-eating plants and pitfalls and noxious gas, but the area a the end had been the strangest: a void dimension full of unfinished or forgotten creations and fragments that either began to corrupt them (had he mentioned Horsemen and Hunters were there too? Yeah) or, in Mort's case, continually shock them. And in the end some crotchety owl had demanded the fragments back for its mirror or whatever...And next thing he knew, he was back in the locker corridor.

"All in all, weird," Mort finished with a fit shrug, tilting his head up to view her. "Had strange haze-dreams for a while afterwards a-bout two forces clashing...Not sure if has connection or not." He paused to let his tale sink in and rest his voice.
