Silent Sorrow was tired of the beach. Sand was too uneven and hot during the day, and she had managed to lose her last target to the waves. Too bad she couldn't swim. No Nixie was she. Leaving the shoreline was easy enough, and she was very happy to feel solid earth under her hooves again. She stopped for a moment to observe what lay before her. No trees, flatland as far as the eye could see, and lots of grass and shrubs. The Kawani plainlands. Yes, she had been here before. If she journeyed with the mountains always to the left horizon, eventually she'd get to the village. And if nothing else, there would be someone new to follow around there.

With a flap of her head wings, she walked on through the open land while the sun set behind her.

By star-lit night, she had made as much progress as a Putti could- which was not a whole lot. The little pony was unfettered, however, and even though the prarie grass went up to her shoulders, she kept going. Fireflies blinked around her in their long, short, and unrhythmic ways. Sorrow took little notice of them; bugs were too small to make good lasting company. There were also too many to choose from to follow, if they moved on at all. But it didn't matter. She would find someone around the area eventually.

The last few nights had been filled with little activity. Now that the herds had had plenty of time to settle into the new lands many had broken off into smaller groups opting to spread out more across the lands. With fewer numbers to look over in a single location Hypnos found that his serves as a night time guide were lessening as well. Even if he went weeks without needing to help anyone he would continue what he had done each and every night. One could never know when another would be lost or need some sort of assistance in the night.

With the sun setting Hypnos readied himself for the night. After a quick meal he gathered up his small lantern and set out into the night. He rarely stuck to a pattern when it came to his night patrols preferring to pick a different path each night, though in the end he would cover all of the border before coming in as the sun came up. This time he chose a path that he hadn't started with for a week or so. Glancing up at the sky Hypnos was glad it was a clear night, rain had a bad habit of effecting the light from his lantern and wandering around in a storm was dangerous, tonight would be a good night to be out, as anyone needing his help would be able to see him clearly and from some distance away.

Moving along at an easy trot Hypnos followed a semi-well worn path that would take him out to the very edge of the herds current territory. Those who were lost were rarely found within the lands, so each night he traveled to the border and beyond to ensure anyone could find him who needed him. It was also a good way to keep an eye out for any predators that may be lurking in the shadows waiting for their opportunity to strike.

Wandering alone was boring! So boring, in fact, that she felt it necessary to stop and eat some of the grass around her before moving on. It was good to rest, anyways. It could possibly being a long night. Silent Sorrow hoped that it wouldn't be too boring. She feared she might end up falling asleep too soon and miss out on covering a good bit of ground.

An hour later, once she had nibbled some flora and walked a bit more, she found herself yawning for the first time that night. Sorrow chided herself with some harsh flapping- pull yourself together, girl! The night is still young!

Looking back to the horizon, she spotted something...off. There was starlight; that was a dim white most times, with the rare flickering red. Fireflies were always little specks of yellow. So what was this blue glow off in the distance?

Curiosity pushed her towards it, her stride getting a little faster and a little more faster than that until she was trotting fairly quickly. Was somebody out here? She just had to see.

Unfortunately, she was winded fairly quickly on her short legs, especially after a long day of walking. Another break was in order. While she quietly panted, Silent Sorrow squinted to get a better view of the light. It was closer now, and a bit more visible than just a vague glow somewhere out in the beyond. It was a...lantern? Yes. Fairly close to the ground. And something was holding it. She could see that much in the light now. The face of another short horse, like her, it seemed. How intriguing! She moved in closer once she got some of her oomph back.

Hypnos picked his way along the path at a decent pace. He knew these trails well and so could travel them quite quickly if needed, however at the moment there was no need to rush. So he moved along at a pace a bit faster than a walk keeping his eyes and ears open for any signs of someone needing his assistance. He walked for some time, stopping here and there to glance into thicker parts of the forest, a place where one could hide before moving on. A gentle breeze blew towards him as he walked, bringing with it cool night air and the scent of the forest all around him.

After a short time he came across a portion of the path that was littered with several branches. They were small enough that he could move on his own but certainly big enough to trip or even injury anyone who may be traveling the area in a hurry. He couldn't leave them here so he found a low lying branch to set his lamp on before going to work. Bending his head down Hypnos took hold of one of the branches in his teeth and pulled it off the path and into the forest several feet before returning for the next. After each branch was moved he would pause, listening to the forest around him, some crafty predators were rumors to make traps to slow down or capture their prey before striking. While he doubted a predator had done this, it had been fairly windy the last few days and surely that had dislodged the branches, it was always best to err on the side of caution.

It didn't take too long for him to clear the portion of the path. Doubling checking he got all the branches Hypnos returned to where he had left his lamp. Pausing for a moment he glanced around before picking it up once more and continuing along his way.
