Madeline was bored.
Exhausted, frustrated, lonely, and beginning to question her sanity, but above all else, bored.
Whether or not someone out there had meant to, they'd seemed to have knocked on her pod and kicked her into the living, breathing world in the middle of a recess. A time when no one was around at all. Having kicked open the door to her room, the Sun trainee now situated herself in its entrance, back to one side of the frame and feet resting high up on the other. She'd been intent on going to the lounge in search of other human lifeforms, but, well... she'd never really made it past her own door. Literally. Her customary white and gold coat was discarded to her right, and on her left was a pile of old vintage cards.
It wouldn't take long for someone to realize she was playing blackjack.
With herself?
Nah.
"Sooo." She prompted out loud, because no one was around and it wasn't like talking out loud would make her look anymore crazy than she already had to be. When there was silence on the other "end", she lifted her eyes. Hey, boyo, don't go missing in action on me now.
( Shh, sugar. I was thinkin'. )
The reply came like rough gravel and cigarette smoke. There was a pause, and then, ( Hit me. ) Madeline flipped over a card and laughed. It was a bust. The laughter soon died in her throat though, and sighing, the girl sunk lower against the door frame, staring morosely at her bare feet. Here she was, on an island in the middle of god-only-knew-where, training to learn how to fight against god-only-knew-what, and she'd yet to meet a single other person that didn't talk in stilted two letter sentences before dashing away again.

Wilson was depressed.
Losing one of your best friends, fantastically failing a mission, and a number of things could do that to a person. He hadn’t expected Dakota to be angry for this long, but as long as the moon hunter was mad at him there was no way Wilson could hope to patch up their somehow-functional friendship. He wasn’t feeling too much like himself, and that whole turning into a minipet experience certainly didn’t help. He was sick sick sick and Wilson should have stayed in bed (couch, to be specific, since he was still chilling at Gale’s house) but no, the intermediate trainee was out and about while he had this weird flu.
No one was around as he trudged down the dorm hallway, one arm on his stomach while the other was pressed against the wall. A frown was etched onto his face as he knitted his brows together. He blinked often to try to drive away the unusual blotches of discoloration and hues, but they stubbornly remained. Wilson paused as Gramps’ voice, despite being quieter and gentler than usual, pounded his brain.
[You should find someone to escort you back to the towns. There’s no way you’ll make it on your own like this.] Wilson shook his head as he forced a smile. No way. I’m fine. To prove his point, he straightened his back and bit back the sore pain in his muscles. A hand was still gently leaning against the wall as he continued forward, but at least he seemed relatively normal.
Laughter echo down the corridor; he stopped. After what had just happened, Wilson didn’t expect to hear something like laughter. Curiosity filled his thoughts as he pushed himself onward toward the source of the sound.
After a while he noticed a leg poking out of a door. He stared. He tried to look normal, tried to smile (tiredly) before he walked over and examined the sun trainee from head to toe. She appeared perfectly fine. Maybe she hadn’t been turned into a minipet. Maybe she was new? Wilson attempted to sound fine, but his friendly voice was tinged with exhaustion. “Hi. I’m Wilson. You?”

Flipping over another card to reveal blackjack, Madeline smiled to herself, triumphantly declaring Arsen a terrible gambler before her attention was drawn upwards by the sound of another voice. Blinking, the Sun trainee bent forward and scooped up her cards in one practiced motion, folding all of them back into a neat deck.
"Hi," She responded, kicking her feet off the doorframe and popping upwards. She glanced him over from head to toe, taking in what she could and frowning at what she saw. "You look like s**t, sugar."
Yes, perfect way to make friends, Madeline.
( You're such a little s**t. )
Madeline began to shuffle the deck in her hands, a nervous tick. "Sorry - I'm Madeline." She smiled at him, tapping the door frame in between shuffling. "I just moved in, I guess you could call it. Wilson, huh?" She blinked, drawing a few cards from her deck before replacing them. "You okay?"

In one smooth gesture, the cards splayed all over were already put back into a pile. Wilson blinked. The girl must have played cards often to be able to do something like that.
“Hi.” He didn’t know why he greeted her a second time. It must have been the sickness. Wilson smiled sheepishly, a hand slowly reaching for the back of his neck. Slowly. “Yeah, we just had an…incident. Everyone isn’t feeling too good.” In fact, as he blinked he could have sworn he could have seen shadowed figures behind Madeline, but they were gone as quickly as they had appeared.
“Madeline? Nice to meet you.” He brought out a slow, sluggish hand for a handshake. “Yeah, I guessed by how you weren’t, uh, ill, I suppose.” Wilson grinned. “No worries. This kind of stuff happens sort of often. You’ll get used to it.” [Maybe not.] … [What?] "So you're new, right? Got any questions?"

Continuing to shuffle the deck absently, Madeline blinked at the other, a lazy cat like smile spreading over her face. "Oh, I see." She laughed quietly, "I wish I could be of some help, but magical flu bugs aren't exactly my forte."
She paused to push an auburn curl behind her ear before continuing to shuffle. "Yes, nice to meet you too, Wilson. And you can call me Mads, if its easier." She shook her head, glancing Wilson up and down for a long moment before answering him. "Oh, that'll be fun." She mused with a grin, "I think I'll just have to see first hand for myself how - ah - adventurous things here can get." Her lips twitched, and Arsen snorted in her head, his lust for battle permeating throughout her calm and making her fidget.
"Not particularly interesting ones. How do you get used to the second subconscious in your head? Is the kitchen like a warzone when you're trying to get the good food?" How often do trainees die? How emotionally unattached should I keep myself? If I die, will you give a s**t? Nah, those questions were far too private.
"Hey, doll," She murmured as an afterthought, "want to sit down? You don't look so well, and my rooms open if you want." She cut the deck in half and gestured with one part of it to the door gaping behind them like some sort of magician.

He actually laughed. “It’s okay, you’re…” Voice trailing off, Wilson leaned to the side to catch a glimpse of the golden sun on her coat. “You’re a sun, so that’s not surprising. Magical flu bugs sound like it’d be a Life thing.”
“Mads, alright. I think there’s already a Maddie, anyways. Two Maddies would get confusing really fast.” Wilson grinned. The corner of his lips twitched. “Adventurous. Right.” Not exactly the most enthusiastic response.
The answer was automatic, curt. “Time.” He paused, laughed, then went on to elaborate. “It’s weird and annoying at first, but after a while you get used to it. Sometimes it’s kind of comforting to have that voice in your head, actually. When you feel lonely or whatever, they’re there.” His mouth was pressed into a thin line. “The food’s alright. It’s not really crowded since hunters are usually…” Off island. Dying. There seemed to be more questions teeming in her mind, but they were never asked. There was no guarantee he would have been able to answer them honestly, anyways.
“Oh.” If only he could have seen how pale his face was. “Um, thanks.” Wilson poked a cautious head into her room before taking a few steps inside. Eventually he decided to seat himself on the floor and at the edge of her bed. “Have you taken a look around the island yet? Not too much to see though, I guess.”

"Mighty, mighty sun." Madeline announced proudly, shrugging her shoulders and rolling them back. "Sounds like it; I guess I'm still figurin' it all out though."
Waving her hand around lazily, Madeline turned and navigated back into her room, grinning back at Wilson with a wink. "Yeah, s'a common name, I'm not surprised." The unenthusiastic response garnered a thick, accented laugh. "Yeah, I guess I'm still figurin' that part out too."
Shuffling her deck of cards again, Madeline dropped down on the bed and yawned. "I guess so. Though my particular voice is a pain in the a**." Cue internal swearing from said voice. Madeline giggled, but it died in her throat and she sighed, shaking off the questions for now. "Want to play a game?" She asked instead, offering out her deck. "I know everything."
About card games, that was.

“How long have you been awake? You should meet your division leader and assistant soon. They’re quite a pair, if I do so say myself,” he asked, laughing weakly afterwards as he recalled his stressful promotion mission and the anime convention Allan had taken Wilson and a few others to. “You’ll figure it out soon enough.”
Wilson managed to chuckle quietly. “I’m sure you’re not the only one who thinks that,” he reassured her, “but your weapon picked you for a reason, so I think you’ll get along eventually.”
It took him some effort to turn around and look up at Madeline, but eventually he did and stared at the deck in her grasp. He hesitated. “Um, sure. That’s fine! My knowledge is a bit rusty, though, so I don’t know how well I’ll play if that’s alright with you.”
And then they played cards until they fell asleep the end.keiifuu Yes that is my edit, deal with it
