THORNLEY ORMONTON

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Appearance
Thornley is a tall, well-built man with The Works: broad shoulders, muscular limbs and impressive strength. His face is well-structured with a strong nose and jaw, and his blond hair is grown long and pulled back - a little old-fashioned, he admits, but is a matter of habit. His deep-set blue eyes can be deeply empathic or highly intimidating, depending on the situation. In general, Thornley has the looks of a handsome young boy who, in being rather priviledged, fulfilled his every potential and looks just the part for a stately, strapping Earl.

Personality
Thornley is generally good-natured and highly confident, but terribly stubborn with a lethal temper when provoked. His behaviour is informed by his strength and a strange mix of machismo and chivalry - he is either too foolish or proud to censor his actions and thoughts for anyone, and will use brute force to prove his point. Thornley is most definitely a man of action and not one of thought.
He is at once highly influenced by the ways of his father - such as an aversion to superstition and magical things - but also highly rebellious against the parts he simply does not like. He is enamoured by an idealistic ambition to be an outstanding, personable ruler of the people (of the family's land), and in his headstrong (and idiotic) way, completely flouts social divisions and runs off frequently to "be with the people", completely infuriating his father. Essentially, he wears plainer clothes and attempts to mingle with the common folk to understand their lower-class joys and woes, with his disdainful brother in tow. Unfortunately, he mostly infuriates the common folk too, being incredibly patronising and white-man-privileged in his mindset and approach.

Interests
Melee Combat: The best way to display his dominance and exceptional strength. He is able in any range of swing-and-slash weaponry, but specifically trained in swordsmanship since his youth, with a preference for broadswords. His heavyset form emphasises endurance instead of agility, and strength instead of strategy. Unfortunately, duelling has since been generally discouraged in their time, and so if Thornley is looking for some fisticuffs, it's off to bars and pubs…
Hunting: If he can't gut curs, he'll gut deer. In their youth, Thornley dragged Locke out with his convenient bow and arrow, and armed with a dagger and shortsword, the brothers would return with game for dinner. He argues there's nothing as viscerally thrilling as coming face to face with a giant bear - and winning (an unverified yarn). The long and short-range combination the brothers have excites him as well, for in the fight he can often hear the swift whistle of Locke's arrow (in more recent times, when he's been able to get him outdoors, bullet) close by; he never fears being struck due to Locke's excellent aim, and it adds to the atmosphere.
Ladies: Thornley likes and is rather good with (undiscerning) ladies, being handsome and sturdy. In this age of gentility a nobleman like him is less common, and though he acts a little low-class with his temper and occasional drinking, he still attracts them with an air of nobility. He delights in telling them many tales of his valour and strength, and will sometimes take to demonstrating on the nearest fellow unfortunate and stupid enough to even attempt stealing his audience of women. Such attention has no effect on his confidence, but rather, exists for his desires and vanity. After all, he too would like them to retell their own tales of their amazing night with Lord Ormonton.
The Peasants and their Culture: Thornley frequently distracts himself with his getting-to-know-you visits to the lower classes, finding almost every facet of their lives "quaint", "meagre yet happy", and "incredibly humble". The only good thing about his presence is that he tends to buy trinkets from their markets, being enamoured with "poor-man's culture." He prefers to avoid the literature and experience it for himself.

Background
Thornley is the elder son of the Earl of Ashford, Obediah Ormonton, currently 27 (his mother, Frances, nags about him 'getting on' without a wife - he's honestly just busy). As the first son, endowed with strength and conventional good looks, he was treasured, well-loved and generally spoilt. Though a full-grown man, Thornley has yet to grow out of his selfish, privileged and volatile ways.

Feelings towards:
his father: overwhelming respect and admiration punctuated by bouts of incredulousness over his arcane mindset and traditional ways.
his mother: a somewhat distant and dutiful sense of love, having been closer to his father, and eternal belief in her womanly graciousness.
his brother, Locke: fierce affection, having been his protector since their youth, grudging respect for his cleverness (he finds it hard to believe he can be truly independent, having been a very clingy child) and exasperation over his wilful behaviour (his own, he argues, he can't really help) and strange little habits and desires.
the people: earnestly desires to understand them, and be a friend, not a distant lord.
Wardwood: never spared a thought for it and its legends, and when forced to consider it, is wary and disbelieving.

Relationships:
Locke is flighty, strange, spiteful and still yet charming with all his faults. He just wants attention. Even if he keeps rejecting mine. Where's my sweet little brother gone?

MELLT
Personality: Named in the Wardwood equivalent of Welsh. Headstrong, bratty and impulsive,
Mellt is an extremely inconvenient Guardian who gets in the way of Thornley's attempts to keep him secret and not-dead.
What Thornley is most chagrined by, however, is his refusal to like Locke.

The Choosing: And Lightning Part the Fog

Mellt's Totemic Family forthcoming!

Relationships:
