Makutu walked along the small pathway that ran alongside the river that coursed down to the underground pools, following it back to where it meet with a large pool open to the air. She paused a moment and took one step forwards, peering up at the sky, or what little could be seen up from the bottom of the pool to the woodland above. It was dusk, a time she enjoyed, their was something mystic about the light at dawn and dusk, neither one light or another; a period of change. She stepped fully out from the tunnelling cave which lead deeper underground and began to circle on a thin narrow path up the side of the chasm. It wasn't a long way down to the open air pool and the entrance way to the set of caves she called home, but it was precarious enough, few creatures choose to come down usually it was only for one reason only; to pay her a visit.

As it was, night time was the time she roamed the world above and something drew her down to the beach. It wasn't close by, but she reached the sandy bay before midnight. She stood on the edge of the sand dune letting the salty breeze blow through her hair and into her lungs. There was something invigorating about that smell, something that suggested at adventures and the unknown, both of which hit her deep in her soul. She revelled in quite bliss for a moment or two, her eyes closed and her other senses heightened. When she opened her eyes, and she allowed that sense to come back to her, she scanned the beach then stopped in her survey as her eye sight came to rest upon the outline of a Soquili laying down near the shoreline.

Interesting, she thought to herself, and slowly made her way down the beach to inspect the matter further. As she walked closer she noted the large horn protruding from her head, she presumed it was a female of course as it was more petite in structure. The horn was of a size she'd never seen before, it was singular much like a unicorn's, but the rest of the creature suggested she had little unicorn blood in her, if even she had at all. She had a structure on her back, but she was lying on her side with several needle like, bones lay flat to her back, didn't give a clear image of what the structure was, but Makutu guessed at a fin-like structure, so perhaps a little Kelpie blood? What was clear however, was that she was not well, her rib cage moved slowly, but she was taking swallow breaths.

Makutu circled the other Soquili, giving her plenty of space and stood some paces back, not wanting to frighten the mare at seeing another, unknown Soquili approach when she was clearly vulnerable. She stooped down slightly, her long luminescent hair hair falling forward, but held back from her face, her voice was low and somewhat lulling, 'Do not fear me, I can help you.'

Calfuray wasn't entirely sure at first what it was that had woken her - but she was sure of one thing. She hurt - a lot, from the tip of her hooves to the end of her horn everything seemed to be one large mess of pain. Of course certain pains stood out in sharp contrast to the dull ache that covered the rest of her body, the throbbing in her head for one, a throbbing which seemed to originate from a much sharper pain above one eye..a gash perhaps? Or just a hard hit..it was hard to tell without looking herself which she of course couldn't do. A slash on her shoulder complained fiercely about the way she was laying on it along with various other smaller cuts.

Moaning slightly she stirred, suddenly aware of the water lapping at part of her hide...and cracking an eye open of the shadow standing over her. Even if she had wanted to defend herself or flee the mare knew that there was no way that she could and the strangers low voice was somewhat reassuring...reassuring enough that Calfuray at least wasn't immediately nervous about her. "Wher...where am I?" She rasped in a harsh voice, throat dry and angry.

She watched as the mare stirred and came round, she watched the pained expression as the aches and pains of her body registered, watching closely, noting the way her brow deepened as the pain from the gash just above her eye seemed to give her most of the grief. Her voice was harsh, not her usual tone she guessed, so she'd been unconscious, or coming in and out of consciousness for some time at least. Makutu didn't stir, standing in a few inches of water, the tide lapped at her legs and it was refreshing, she focused on the mare. 'Your on a beach west of the Kawani village, in the same bay as the mangrove forest... Do you know the area?' She herself didn't travel much nowadays, she had once when she was practising her trade, however now settled, Soquili came to her, rather than the other way around.

Slowly Makutu stepped towards the mare, exposing more of the glow worm markings on her legs as she did so. 'Let me see to that wound for you.' She spoke softly, though with a confidence that wasn't misplaced. She lent over the mare and touched her lips gently to the gash above the mares eyes, she focused her thoughts, willing the torn flesh to knit back together, and increased the platelets around the area, to begin to from a scab. Pulling back she stared and nodded ever so slightly to herself, smiling ever so slightly at the mare, 'A little better?'

"I.." And here Calfuray paused, unsure about what she was going to say, at first it seemed that there had been an answer on her lips but her mind refused to process the answer..in fact her mind was terribly blank, She knew who she was...and had some vague memories of her family as a foal but beyond that it seemed that everything had vanished. She barely noticed when the mare leaned in and helped her wound to heal, it wasn't until the pain began to ebb away that she came back to herself.

"Yes thank you...I was." And she paused again somewhat confused.."I was trying to remember.." She finally told the mare "I don't know if I know this area, it doesn't seem familiar" She stated, taking a bit of time to search for landmarks she might recognize..but nothing seemed to jog her memory, nothing presented itself as something she had seen before.

Makutu observed the purple mare, she seemed lost it thought and concentrating on something, though what she wasn't sure until she started spluttering disjointed words together. She was confused and was looking about herself trying to take in her surroundings, finally it clicked, she didn't know where she was, and furthermore she seemed troubled by other ideas... 'Well, I would advise you don't stay here, as lovely as this beach is, the tide is rising rapidly. If you are unsure of the area I'm more that happy to help you to find shelter, I have a knowledge of this land and your not going to be strong enough to walk far I'd imagine.' She backed up, going deeper into the water which now lapped at the the wounded mares hooves. 'Can you remember your name? She'd need to address the mare at some point whilst in her company and visa versa so she added, 'Mines Makutu.'

Calfuray hadn't even noticed the rising water level until the other mare pointed it out, but now that she had it Calfuray could see the wisdom of the mares advice. It was a good thing that she had woken up when she did...or her lack of memories would have been the least of her worries. "I'm Calfuray, Calfuray Arrats" She told the mare and was somewhat pleased to find that she knew that much at least. But after a few moments of careful consideration it seemed to be the only knowledge willing to leech to the surface of her mind . "But that's about all I know apparently" She stated with a sigh.

Deciding that for the moment she'd focus on what was happening in the present Calfuray placed her concentration on trying to stand - the mares earlier healing had helped , at the very least her various injuries were no longer gaping wounds..but her joints felt rubbery and her muscles shaky, how long had she been unconscious? Had she been washed ashore by the waves? Or stumbled down the beach and fallen ? It was impossible to say, any evidence had long since been taken care of by the elements. What was obvious however was the fact that she had lain there long enough to be dehydrated and weakened. Makutu was right..it was doubtful she was going to be going very far. "Some help in finding shelter would be appreciated".

Curious really, to remember one's name and nothing else, it wasn't the first time she'd hear of such a complaint, but usually more long term memory lasted after a traumatic event, perhaps will a little time and some rest more of Calfuray's memory would return to her. She watched as the mare attempted to get her hooves underneath her, and raising up on legs functioning by a system of tried muscles and strained tendons, she watched with some admiration at the determination of spirit the mare demonstrated. She nodded in response to Calfuray's response to her primarily question, and then looked beyond the mare to the dunes raising behind her. She focused back on the foreground and Calfuray, and confirmed, 'I'll not take you far, the dune's aren't extensive but beyond them the area is flat and will offer you little protection until the landscape matures further...' With that, she walked up the sand, accompanied by a small roll of a miniature wave to stand beside Calfury waiting for the mare to walk forwards, for if her muscles did protest to such an extent she stumbled, she'd be there to support her, until they warmed and functioned a little better.

She knew, no doubt, Calfuray wouldn't of drunk for some time, so it'd be important to get some fluids into her. Where there was sea water, at some point there must be a river, stream or some other path for water to run down from the mountains, and luckily for Calfuray, Makutu knew it wasn't too far away. A little way back in dunes fresh water gathered in a slight pond before flowing onwards, towards the sea. Of course water was somewhat rare in the dune environment, so around the immediate area of the pond, the vegetation was more dense, a little greener and would provide Calfuray with her shelter, as well as a water source.

The first step was always the hardest Calfuray reminded herself though how she knew that old proverb she wasn't entirely certain, likely the same way she had known better then to drink sea water. Basic survival knowledge and some learned thoughts seemed to be still in her memory then, that was good - it meant she could at least function even if she couldn't remember. Gathering herself she took a step, forcing her shaky leg to cooperate so that she could take another and then another and while it was by no means a fast process she was at least moving and before long she had joined the blue unicorn.

"Anywhere out of the water would be an improvement" She tried to joke as she shuffled along, following the blue mare who led the way and yet always kept close enough to offer support if needed. Calfuray knew that she ought to count herself lucky to have been found by someone willing to help a stranger - and better yet such a Soquili who knew the surrounding landscape as well."I will owe you a great deal for this help"

The wounded mare was unsteady on her hooves of course, but Makutu trusted once she worked the muscles out a bit they would warm to the work and welcome it, of course until a certain point where the tissue would soon understand it needed true rest and recovery, in a position more comfortable than the one she'd been found in. She kept a steady pace, always a step ahead though matching the pace Calfuray set, bearing off slightly to the left, up the beach, aiming for a gap between two low lying dunes. She had made a point over the years to study and get to know her 'back garden', for it was always good for a healer to know what herbs grew close by in need for making balms and tonics etc. She walked on in contented silence for a while, Makutu didn't keep many friends, it wasn't a skill she possessed and she was happy with her own company, and minimal conversation with her clients.

Calfuray made a joke, but Makutu simply took it for a statement and nodded silently in agreement. The second comment from Calfuray caused a small smile to spread across her face and then vanish quickly. She paused and turned her head to look Calfuray in the eye with one hauntingly blue eye, 'Indeed you will... but will shall discuss payment later, tomorrow or the day after perhaps, once you are stronger...' There was a sinister edge to her tone, but she smiled a friendly smile, though it seemed somewhat false and vanished all too quickly. She turned and looked forwards once again, taking a step forwards, she resumed guiding Calfuray to her over night haven.

The sinister edge to the mare's comment and the fake looking smile would probably have captured more of Calfuray's attention if she wasn't currently so occupied in simply making her way through the dunes. That wasn't to say that she didn't notice it however..merely that she didn't attempt to call the mare out and demand to know what she meant...in any case the fact of the matter was that Calfuray was in no position to demand anything and without this mares help it would be unlikely she would last very long. Later..as the blue mare said, when she was stronger, then they could discuss the innuendos behind the mares words and Calfuray.

"As you wish" Calfuray responded willingly enough, though weather or not she remained willing would be another matter. It would depend on the price this mare decided to demand. The dunes thankfully began to give way to firmer ground and walking became a good bit easier as her muscles warmed and grew accustomed to moving again. "Do you get many travelers in the area?" She questioned, wondering once more how she had come to be here - had she been traveling with a herd? Perhaps this was a path she took often and simply did not recall, it was possible if the area was highly traveled.

So, so sorry for the delay!

Makutu noted that the ground grew slightly harder; salt tolerant grasses took a hold of the desolate sandy dunes and knitted together, dying back with time and providing limited nutrients which then ultimately encouraged small, more closely woven forms of grasses which bloomed with tiny red and yellow flowers that spotted the dunes in the summer months, the dunes matured. The ground became more solid and made it easier for the weakened mare to gain purchase of the ground, not constantly having to battle the slightly shifting grains of sand under hoof. Makutu picked her pace up a little and encouraged the mare onwards. Makutu didn't note the slightly edge of curiosity or wariness in Calfuray's tone as she responded, she had a far greater confidence in herself and her methods that allowed for her to believe another might trick her.

They rounded a dune, a course that took a little long than going over them, but she knew the mare couldn't handle too much physical strain, and there lay the fresh water pond. 'Just a few more strides.'She encouraged softly. She looked to her side at Calfuray, 'Many... there are a few, though I must admit I am more of the nocturnal sort and probably miss most of the usual traffic in the area.' She edged towards the water and stared down into the mirror like reflection of herself, she broke the waters surface and took a slow single drink and then took a step back. She smiled at Calfuray then, 'Rest, if you are still here tomorrow evening I shall bring you a tonic that'll help strengthen your tied and battered muscles. Sleep and rest, wake at midday and stretch yourself out but do not stray to far, it may take a day or two to recover from your adventures.' She fixed her gaze on the mare watching for some form of confirmation.

No worries =-)

Calfuray was more then glad to see the pool of water come into view, though they had not wandered far it had felt like miles to the wounded mare and gratefully she dropped her head to take a cooling drink, listening to the other mares words and instructions with a cocked ear as she drank. "Well the dunes will likely hide me from view should anyone wander along the beach during the day." She finally responded as she lifted her head, peering back towards the ocean to find her view obstructed by the sandy hills. That was good - it would be hard to rest if she had to constantly be on alert for those passing nearby. Much easier to rest when you were hidden like this.

"Resting sounds good - I do not think I could wander far even if I wanted to." She told the other mare as a confirmation of the orders to rest and stay put. It wasn't like she could really disobey, she'd get maybe half a mile and collapse and that was pointless in the long run. Better to stay put and let herself recover as the other mare suggested.

Makutu nodded slowly in response to Calfuray's words. The mare had been through some sort of ordeal, what she did not know but enough so she'd lose parts of her short term memory, the sea had obviously not been kind to her either but she'd recover within a day or too. She took in the area around the pond and satisfied with the shelter it provided she made her good byes, 'I need to go a find one or two herbs for a tonic, so I shall leave you in peace now.' Truth be told she kept a store of dried herbs within her network of caves, where they hung away from moisture and were stored for prolonged period of time, however one could always benefit from topping up the store. She turned and began to head towards a gap between the edges of two dunes, the pond was banked on nearly every side by rolling dunes, the wind would be minimal here, she paused and confirmed with the purple mare, 'I shall be back tomorrow evening with something to help those muscles.' She smiled simply over her shoulder, catching Calfuray's eye, then disappeared from sight.

Calfuray watched as the mare disappeared from view catching her eye when she glanced back and giving her a brief nod to acknowledge her words. She would be here..there was no where else for her to go and a nights rest seemed like something which shouldn't be squandered in her condition.

Turning from the sight of the fading mare Calfuray lowered her head to take another long drink from the pool before moving off to find a comfortable place to rest. At least the sand was soft she thought to herself as she lowered herself to the sun warmed ground. It was strange to lay down to sleep - though she couldn't recall why, perhaps she wasn't accustomed to feeling comfortable enough to sleep on the ground..or more likely she wasn't accustomed to being wounded enough to make it a necessity. Sighing heavily she closed her eyes and drifted off.
