Awendela huffed softly as she shifted her weight from one side to the other, laying on a tiny patch of dead and browned grass. She had managed to find herself a nice little shady place next to small pool of water to rest. This pool was hidden from plain view, as there was a wall of about five feet rising up on three sides of it, the other side trickling down a small rock hill and ending in an even smaller pool, full of sharp rocks. She had attempted to bathe in the small pool, although felt that it would suit her better to just rest near and drink from it instead. Now her red and white fur was all full of muddy brown sediment from rolling in the pool, and in turn little muddied trickles dripped from her fur onto the grassy spot. It was a lazy day, not much going on to notice aside from these trivial things. It had been a couple days...almost a week since she had eaten, but her last pick had been enough that she was not yet terribly hungry. At least to this point, nobody had bothered her in her newfound haven yet.

She flicked her tail lazily from side to side, flicking along with it little drops of water, some of which touched her cheeks, bringing a coy and playful grin. The female spun with a glimmer in her eye and snapped at her own tail, chuckling heartily in the game. She flicked it again, this time with the intention of bringing the chill drops to her face again. Her long, and usually soft and fluffy tail fur was wet from her roll, and she set to licking it so that it would dry soft and not matted. After seeing through her task, Awendela tucked her front legs tight to her body and rest her chin on the ground, golden eyes half-open and surveying what she could.

The first sign of his presence was the thump, rattle and screech of branches scratching along the ground and they dragged, lifted and were brought down in steady rhythm. The cacophony echoed off the rocks long before he came into view. Wailawa paced along with a patient expression. His first three legs moved in quick and smooth procession, and were then followed by the slow and awkward lurch of his right hind leg, which was the cause of the noise. From toes to rump, it was tangled up in a snarled tree branch.

That was what wandering aimlessly got you, especially if you did it backwards, he thought to himself. He'd been watching a bird and stepped right into the branch somehow. He'd spent half a day trying to remove it himself, but hyena necks didn't seem made to reach that far, or at least his wasn't. Banging against things to dislodge it proved the branch sturdier than his own flesh, as his new bleeding scratches showed. So now he was resigned to hobbling along until it fell off on its own, or some beast took mercy on him.

'Of course', she thought. Just as the hyena had begun to let her eyes droop shut, she heard a tremendous racket coming from not-so-far away. How horrendous, that this should once she'd finally deemed this spot safe, tear her away from near slumber. Awendela gave a little snarl as she hauled herself off the ground, shaking out her still dripping fur. She was a little ticked off, as there was really no valid explanation for the amount of noise coming from...she paused a moment to lift her nose to the air and sample- wherever it was this noise was coming from. If there were any scents from above, they must have been passing her over in her little hidden retreat. She leapt from the ground where she'd lain, onto a flat rock jutting out from the side of one of the walls, to the ground above her little hiding place.

It was then, she spotted not too far from herself, a green-and-striped member of her own species, who apparently thought it hilarious to drag a tree around with him everywhere he went. She glared in his direction and began sauntering toward him, her long red tail flicking with slight agitation. "Hey you!" She shouted toward him, stopping at what she felt to be an appropriate distance away.

Wailawa had just begun to see the upside of handicap by trying to see if he could tap out a musical pattern with the branches, when he heard another's voice. Hurrah, help had arrived! His tail launched into a wagging of its own volition before he'd even turned to look for the source. When he saw it was a hyena he felt his hope confirmed, even though it wasn't one he recognized from his pack.

She was certainly a handsome creature, as bright red as anything. He wondered if she knew she was wet and muddy, but it probably wasn't polite to point it out. Instead he gave her a toothy grin and hobbled closer. His wooden luggage snagged on a rock before he could reach her, though, and tethered him to the spot awkwardly. He wavered in place, trying to keep his balance with his leg stuck halfway in the air. Chuckling to himself, he nodded a greeting. "Hello. Nice day out!"

"You mean to say it WAS a nice day. I was about to have myself a snooze until some tree-butt came dawdling along." Awendela remarked to the male, continuing toward and then plopping down just a few feet from the male. Not that she would admit, but she wasn't expecting him to be nice, and it was kind of funny that he had a big branch stuck to him...The red-furred beast caught herself about to laugh out loud and instead gave the other creature a nasty little smirk. She wouldn't let on that she really wasn't as tough as she acted, you never trust anyone until you at least know their name. He could be faking nice and she'd be none the wiser.

'Although'- Awendela paused her own train of thought and once again glanced over the male. He seemed completely harmless and maybe he just needed some help. "How long have you had that thing dragging off of you anyways?" She questioned him, quirking a brow and shifting her weight to the opposite side.

Wailawa broke into a barking laugh, shaking his mane in amusement. "Tree butt! Hah! That's a good one. Yeah, I've had this on me about a day or so now." He waggled his posterior and snickered at the way it rustled the branches. "Do you think if I stand very still I'll grow leaves? Might help me blend in when I'm hunting. Of course, I'd have to sneak up on my prey with my backside, or turn around really fast if they look at me."

He leaned his weight against the brach, but it refused to give up the rock it'd snagged in. He huffed a sigh. "Looks like I've already taken root. Guess I'm a goner. I'll have to be a tree now. I wonder if it's hard to do." He glanced her over thoughtfully. "And it looks like you're trying to become a river. You've got the muddy and wet part already, but I've never seen a red river before. Plus you need some fish."

"And what would make you think I'd have any idea what it's like to be a tree? How could you have dragged that thing around for longer than a day? Have you gone far?" The female quizzed this new companion, not meaning to overload him, just full of curiosity at the situation. "Maybe you could swing it around and take off into the air like a bird!" Awendela chuckled heartily as her ears flicked. "I bet it's hard to be a tree if you've got any brains, I don't think trees have brains..." the red-furred female paused for a moment contemplatively. "You knowwww...you wouldn't have to be a tree if I were able to un-stick you." She suggested, playfully jumping to her paws and wiggling her shoulders a little bit.

"And I'm not trying to be a river, I had to have a bath. I was, as I previously stated attempting to have a nap before I was awoken by the likes of you, and I didn't particularly care whether my fur was perfect or not." Awendela stuck out her tongue at the male, and began pacing around him in a semi-circle, examining his situation with this branch, and now the rock, as well. "I can also guarantee you won't find any fish around here, I've checked." She added matter-of-factly, flicking her tail in his face with a devilish grin.

Wailawa squinted in thought at her questions. "Not sure how far I've come, guess it depends on where I am." He peered around, but didn't recognize anything. Yes, he was lost again. Ah well, he always found his way home eventually. He tried to swing the branch around as suggested, but this resulted in his slowly turning in a small circle, pivoting on the branch. He took a few hops in place, but couldn't gain much height.

He wagged his tail hopefully at her suggestion of unsticking him. "Oh, would you? I don't think I'd make a good tree. I think they eat dirt, and it tastes terrible. I've checked." He rotated to give her access to the leg, not afraid of her in the slightest. "Not all rivers have fish, maybe we could find you some nice frogs and a few reeds. But I imagine being a river might be as unpleasant for a hyena as being a tree. What were you trying to do anyway, that got you so wet?"

The female groaned and shook her head. "And whatever would possess you to want to eat dirt? Do you know how to hunt?" She teased, smirking and flicking her tail. She examined the brightly marked male for a moment longer and then went to biting and pulling at the tree branch that was stuck to his leg. "-Eeerg", she grunted, mouth half-full of tree, "I already told you I was having a bath. It doesn't bother me to be muddy, at least I got to cool off a little bit. It's a little awkward anyways, being a not-so-large pool, right?" Awendela added, returning to gnawing at the tree that was somehow so tangled on the leg of this other creature.

The red-furred female was having some difficulty gnawing through the different parts of the branch, but finally she gave one good hard bite, and heard a reasonably-sized snapping noise. She stepped back gingerly and watched as a large piece of the branch fell to the ground. "Alright!" she exclaimed, "I've almost got you free..." she trailed off, going back to biting at the last, tangled piece of branch. "What's your name anyways, how do you not know where you are?" Awendela questioned him further.
