How about nearby San Francisco, California? I know of:

-Cherry Blossom Festival Parade not really a convention
-Fanime
-Anime Expo
-SacAnime

Because I could always point that that there is Comic-Con. Just to warn you I don't know where the line ends between north and south, but I'll do my best. Actually I wasn't too sure where the line was drawn as well, but Wikipedia lists Fresno as Northern Picture for easy reference~ 3nodding
