Summer was strangely a rather slow time for some Mearas. It seemed that the older you got the more likely you would spend your summers sitting back in the shade and watching the younger ones running around and wasting energy under the hot sun. Sometimes you did not need to be that old to wish to just sit in the shade having some lemonade or just enjoying the rare cool breeze. In towns were even worse than out in the country it did not seem to matter what your age everyone was rushing here and there. Just watching everyone running about made a burnt stallion tired. The stallion gave a shake of his head, scattering his storm grey mane about him, at everyone else's rush and with a game board tucked under his arm he looked around for a place to sit and relax. Hopefully he would be able to find someone two relax with him and play a roaring game of chess with him. If they were not as inclined to the skills involved in chess he also had checker pieces in the game board he carried.

As the stallion made his way down one street he was glad to see what looked like a sweet cafe coming up on his right. What a perfect place to sit and enjoy the warm day. He could get a drink hopefully then find someone to wager a piece of pie on the game. With a smile on his handsome lips he made his wave over to a free table and sat himself down starting to set up the board. Surely someone would see him setting up and challenge him to a game. The stallion could only hope it would be sooner rather than later.

With his game all set up and the bag of checker pieces out on the table as well, just incase, he leaned back in his chair to wait.

Yave was in the back room, hands working over some cookie dough. The rolling was about finished and she left the apprentice to put them in the oven.
Even on a hot day, not many mearh were out so the shop was empty. Mid-day was slow for the first time all summer and it made her move that much slower, on top of the energy-sapping sunshine. They were grateful for it, but there was an end to that gratitude...
The bell rang as the last indoor customer left. She took a fan from her apron and began to wave it over her face, the breeze a welcome relief from the heat and humidity. Taking a sip of her water, she set the glass down to see how late it was in the day. Her hooves met the dirt road with a clank and her dress blew in the slight breeze just above her thighs.

"Oh--" she gasped, a bit surprised anyone was there, the fan, for a moment, stopping then beginning again.

"--Can I get you anything?" she asked, locks falling over her shoulders as she slightly leaned forward to ask with her shop-smile on. Despite the heat she seemed to have no trouble pushing it aside for the customers.

Aries looked up as he heard customers leaving the shop followed shortly by whom he could only assume was the owner of the shop he had set up at. He gave her a smile his darker coat only the slightest bit matted with hints of sweat from the long walk. His ears flicked at the pleasant sounding offer. If he was going to be there for a time it was only fair that he should order something. Even if it was simply a drink. He gave a warm hearty laughed, "Well yes miss. I assume if I shall be waiting here for a game it only fair that I make a purchase." he spoke as he adjusted his king a bit on the board. "What do you have that would be good for quenching one's thirst on a day like today? Though I am more than sure water would be just fine if you have nothing else." He grinned warmly at her. It would seem that with such friendly company the heat was momentarily forgotten to the stallion.

Yave smiled broadly, seeing him sitting there with his game-board. She sat playfully on the farthest chair at the three-chaired table.

"You know--I would have something cold on a day like today--Ice cream is pretty much what we have, Ice and Milk and water, if you swing that way," she giggled, smiling.

Yave took out a handkerchief from her apron and dabbed her face and chest with it, clearing her clothing seams of sweat before stuffing it back in.

"You could always take an Iced Tea with honey, its very good with our macaroons?" she giggled a bit more, happy that it was hot despite the lack of customers. She could give more attention to each individual.

Aries stood up as Yave moved to take a seat and he did not return into his until she had sat herself down. As she started to dry herself he looked down at his game pieces and adjusted them with a bit of a nervous cough. He was nothing if he was not a gentleman.

"Ah I am not a fan of milk miss. The Iced Tea with honey sounds just fine, maybe could I get a couple black berries thrown in?" He looked up as she seemed to still her movements. "Well I was going to wager dessert on a game so I think it best if for now I hold off on the sweets. I don't suppose you fancy yourself a game with me? Do you play chess or checkers?"

The mare did look smart enough to hold a challenge in a game. Maybe even some nice conversation as well. "Are you the owner of his establishment or one of the waitress? Oh and have very rude of me. Forgive me, my name is Aries it is a pleasure."

Yave was noticing him not noticing her and she giggled a bit, chivalrous males always had her heart.

"You know I would fancy a game--if you've the time," she grinned,"--I'll be right back with your drink," she spoke, returning before answering his other questions.

"The building belongs to my grandfather, I just run it," she smiled, sitting down in her place again, his drink already in front of him and her water glass, icy from being in the freezer was slowly beginning to melt away to let out the bubbles within the icy crags of its inwards.

"And you can call me Yave," she spoke calmly, looking over the board they intended to play on.

((BTw--I know nothing about chess--relatively, i know the pieces and where they can move but thats it...-is that alright? I can BS my way through any game biggrin huzzah! ))

(lol that would make two of us. I don't know a lick of chess. Well kind of how the pieces move and which are what.)

When Yave stood up to get his drink so did Aries. She was a lady and now his gaming partner. How could he not treat her properly, even if she was serving him. "Do not worry miss I have all the time in the world. And I am always willing to spend it with such fine company and with such a pleasant activity."

When she came back and sat down, only then did he retake his seat. "Oh so you work and run it for you grandfather. How nice. And do you enjoy running it miss Yave?" he smiled and give a bow of his head, "I shall take black so I believe that means that you shall have the first move my dear!"

Yave was pleasantly surprised at his gestures of gentlemanly kindness. He spoke above his obvious years and this made her smile. She looked over the board waiting for him to speak again and she nodded when he did.

"I do run it from the back room, but he is all but retired, he rarely even show up, we're still not sure who will inherit the shop, even though i run it." She nodded, taking her first pawn and moving it ahead on the board.

"Thank you," she spoke pleasantly, able to grin while playing, she did not play often but if he did, she could tell easily that, she was no professional player.

"The drink to your liking?" she spoke, waiting on his move.

Aries gave a nod, "Oh yes it would seem that you also do a bit of front room running as well. And I do hope you can own the shop when that day eventually comes and your grandfather, may he have a long and healthy life, passes on from this life. Do you have lots of other family who might be in the way?"

He watched her move her piece and gave a bit of a nod before he moved forward a pawn to places from hers. He could tell that she was not that experienced with the game. Though he would never say that he was a full pro at chess. He would not go easy but he would not fully slaughter her. She could be a natural at it and beat him. Though he would still then offer to buy her a pie.

At the mention of the drink his cheeks darkened a bit and he looked over to it. "Oh my, I am sorry, I have yet to even taste it. I guess I was too wrapped up with the company and conversation." he gave a gentle bark of laughter before taking a gulp of the flavored tea. The honey did add another dimension to the tea that he had never thought of. Leave it to a mare to come up with something so clever. They were wonders to the Mearah species!

After a moment of allowed the flavor to fully coat his mouth and allowing the aftertaste, which was very pleasant, to kick in he gave a nod, "The drink is wonderful. The honey is wonderful with the other flavors in it!"

"I would have never put a dark berry in it--so I do enjoy that you know what you like," she nodded pleasantly, moving another pawn about the board. In truth--until a game was half over she had no strategy, minus knowing what to do if the opponent plays the exact same moves as yourself.

Yave was easy to entertain, she was a simply girl with simple tastes and it made for pleasant encounters like this to be even more so. No pressure. No crude comments, it was relaxing to not have to worry about it all.

A bit of sweat dripped down her shoulder and she took her hankie out of her front pocket once more to tap her skin with it. The dress was hot BUT it was also her idea to wear it and she was not someone to back down after making a decision. It was not unbearable, but if the sun were directly on them she almost would have considered it!

"You know--I am glad days like this hot one are so slow for us, it gives me a break, you know?" SHe thought on winter, the traveling she did then to warmer climates and the bright bright water she traveled across to get there. The southern islands were always so pleasant in the winters of Ostglinn...

Dazed a bit she was surprised to hear him sipping the drink and it woke her with a bit of a startle. The heat seemed to take the energy right from her bones.

"You know---My family is quite large, I have four other siblings and numerous half-brothers and sisters...not all are around though, we scatter by nature and seem to take over the markets of the areas we're in," she giggled, thinking of her family as some kind of plague on earth and it made her smile with the absurdity of it.

"Oh yes the hot days are the days the best ones for breaks. They make you appreciate the breaks so much more." He smiled though he was a bit worried at how hot she looked. If she was going to be his partner for this round he might as well offer to take the game in where they could both be a bit cooler.

"Oh fruits in tea have always been a good combination. Just like warm summer days and board games." he said with a chuckle. He made a move and then listened to her talk about her large family. He gave a bit of a whistle at the amount and then joined her in a laugh, "Oh my a strong market family then? Impressive. I can see how you would be concerned that you might not get to take over the shop. More so if you get it running super well your siblings would be hard pressed to try and take it from you."

He smiled at her a bit, "Miss would you care to take our game inside in the shade?" He asked his tail flicking against the chair he sat in his fur starting to mat up a bit in sweat brought on by the sun blazing on his back.

Yave nodded in agreement as his question, quickly opening the side doors to let the two of them in and a breeze along with them. There was plenty of shade and the coolers, kept that way by magic, were plenty of distance but still seemed to keep the shop at a cooler temperature.

"You can see why it is so vital this summer be a sucessful one then, besides the new sweets shop at the other end of town is not only new but smaller, making it seem more exclusive," she looked for a table for the two of them and gestured to one with two barstool size chairs. She went back for his drink as she sat it down, waiting for him to sit as well. It was too hot for formalities at this point. She wiped the remaining sweat from her brow with her hankerchief only to set it inside the little sewn pocket on her side.

"I believe its my move?" she spoke, thinking it over before moving another piece on the board.

With the board and bag in hand Aries made his way into the shop and towards the table that Yave lead him to. As he set the board down he look a bit shocked and in awe at the cooled air moving around him. He could not believe just how cool it was inside. "Ah yes...I can see very well why it would be vital. This is amazing. I wish I had something like this at home." he said softly with a laugh.

It was never too hot for him to be a gentlemearh so he did not sit until she had returned with his drink. He reached out to take his drink from her hand quickly and smiled, "Thank ya kindly miss." He smiled at her and set it on the table before getting up in the chair. He did like the tall seats it made him feel a bit more important that the others who might be inside. After all he never placed himself above another Mearh.

He gave a nod and a smile, "Yes in deed it was your move." He waited and then gave a nod, "Oh very well played miss." He looked at the board and thought a moment before he moved a pawn and took out one of her pawns.

Yave was fine with completing a some more moves before speaking again.

"You know---I do miss having the kids around," she nodded.

"I have a large family and there was always laughter at this place until they grew up. It is so quiet now--like the yards and fields at the north end of town," she sighed, wiping a bit more sweat from her brow as she contemplated her next move...

Aries watched her as she thought over her move. It was rather cute to see her trying and thinking so very hard about her move. It showed a lot about who she was. the grey locks of his thick tail cascaded against the chair as he gave it a flick his ears perking up at her words. "So you are and elder sibling then? And you enjoy children?"

He smiled at her, "Yes there does seem to be fewer foals around these days. I guess most mares and stallions are too busy right now to worry about finding a lover or mate to produce offspring. What about you miss Yave? Do you have a lover?" He smiled and wiping the outside of his glass with his napkin he then leaned forward to draw the cool moistened cloth over her brow, "You look so hot thinking your move over, I thought cooling you might help you think." she spoke gently.
