The midmorning sun sparkled on the water as Lyric waded in a shallow part of the lake. Mornings were prettier on top of the water than underneath. Lyric took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She enjoyed quiet mornings when the breeze would lightly play with her hair, and the sun danced on top of the water. It was so pretty and peaceful. She opened her eyes and gazed out at a scene she'd seen thousands of time, but would never get old to her. The only problem was that it was still lonely. She sighed and pawed at the bottom of the lake, sending muddy greens floating to the surface. "Well, I guess I can always talk to the plant life..." she muttered to herself. She shook her head and laughed slightly. Talking to her food? That was strange. She nibbled the plants and watched the light on the water, chewing her breakfast in silence.

Heath approached the water slowly, ears alert. The horse knew the water was dangerous, and he was normally cautious; especially as he couldn't do more than grunt or snort-- no good if he needed help. However, today was a nice morning and the water seemed cool and inviting, and the warhorse soon reached the edge, ducking his head to blink calmly when a small whorl of mud formed below. He tensed, blinking before jumping back, eyes wide. What was that?!

Lyric heard a splash nearby and it caused her to drop part of her breakfast out of her mouth. She hoped that whatever, or whoever was around hadn't seen that, for it probably wasn't very attractive. She looked around, and noticed a warhorse a little distance away and a smile crept to her lips. The sight of another horse made her not so lonely, even if she wasn't sure how to approach strangers very confidently.
As Lyric looked, she noticed that he looked startled, and she wondered if there was something in the water. Her curiosity drew her closer to the stallion and she addressed him with a light, "good morning."

Heath's ears pricked seeing a female emerge from the water, and the stallion blinked before smiling, bowing his head politely in greeting, calming a little. Ah, he wasn't alone, and he cocked his head, as if asking if he was intruding, hoping she wasn't offended by his silence. Being mute was hard, some days!

Lyric smiled and felt inclined to bow her head as well; it seemed like the polite thing to do, in response to his politeness. He seemed to be wondering something about her, but she wasn't sure what it was. She looked around, as if perhaps something strange was in the water, which is what she had been curious about in the first place. A little fish swam by, stirring the mud at the bottom, and Lyric stuck her nose into the water to nudge the little fish along. The fish sped up and swam away at Lyric's touch. She laughed and shook the water from her nose. "It's only a fish," she said. Drawing her attention back to her new companion she said, "My name is Lyric, what's your name?"

Heath blinked awkwardly, trying to think of how to answer her and looked a little sheepish. He looked around and perked, seeing a small patch of heath and indicated it with his hoof, looking to her, hoping she understood. Oh, if only he could speak! It would make things so much easier! And he looked apologetic, face knit in worry.

Lyric turned her head in the direction of the heath and tried to figure out what it was he was telling her. Realization dawned on Lyric suddenly. "You can't talk?" she asked. She looked back at the heath and said, "Then...your name is..." She tried thinking of possible names from the stuff he had pointed at. "Plant...flower...grass...no..."
'Oh what is that stuff called?' she thought to herself? 'Heather...no, that can't be right.'
"Heath!" she guessed, and looked expectantly at the face of her companion to see if her guess was right.

Heath beamed, nodding, even rearing an inch off the ground, tromping, but smiling. Yes! His name was Heath! She got it! And he beamed, nodding and settled. He liked her, she understood! Then he looked around, wondering what she was up to. Surely important business!

"Oh, I guessed it right!" she exclaimed happily. "It's nice to meet you, Heath." As she said this, she stepped up onto the bank. Her wet fetlocks dripped cool water down to the ground and the sun felt nice as it began to dry her. "I'm glad I knew what that was called," she said, "I know my water plants, but not all my land plants very well." She took a few steps towards the patch of heath. "I was just eating breakfast," she explained. "Can you eat this stuff?" she asked, poking the heath with her nose.

Heath mused, then shrugged, with an 'I don't know!' expressing, and he calmly walked over, sniffinf at it before taking a bite. Hmmm, a bit sour, and he seemed thoughtful.

Lyric giggled and took a bite herself. After chewing she spit it out with a disgusted face, but as soon as it was out of her mouth she giggled again. "It's not the best thing I've ever tasted," she said. "I like the lake plants much better. Seaweed is my favorite though." She looked around and noticed a grove of apple trees nearby. "I bet those would taste good though," she said, inclining her head in their direction.

Seeing as the heath was, well, terrible, the stallion too, spit it out, making a face at it before looking to the tree. Oh! Apples were wonderful! And he reached to lower a branch for her to try one, smiling again.

Lyric smiled back and took the apple from the branch he had lowered. Breaking it from the tree, she bit into and let the sweet juice from it fill her mouth. So much better than heath had been. "Thank you," she mumbled around a mouthful of apple.

Heath smiled, holding the branch in case she wanted another. Ladies first, after all!
