Looking up at the midday's sun, the lion ruffled his mane in irritation. It felt as though he had been walking forever now! Though he was grateful to be free of the cold weather that nipped at his joints - he wasn't so grateful for the long endless walking. If only he could find somewhere and just settle down, stop being the useless bump on a log and actually be of use to someone - or something. But he wasn't going to kid himself, he knew those days had come and gone. The gods had forsaken him, leaving him to wallow in the misery he now endured daily. A low growl rumbled in his belly, and soon erupted from his mouth, the volume and aggression contained in it chasing the birds free from their perches.

He laughed if only slightly at their fickle nature, and continued on. No real destination in sight, just a simple goal.

To be treated with the respect he deserved.

he laughed again - knowing no one in their right mind would respect an old, worn out lion. He was pathetic and he needed to come to terms with it. His only problem was - he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Growing angrier by the second, the male tried to shake the wandering thoughts loose from his head, but all he succeeded in was forcing his mane to fall in his eyes.

He could tell just from these few minutes of frustration that his day wasn't going to be getting any better.

He could only hope, his thoughts were wrong.

Fireheart found herself on the edge of her pride's lands once again. Her most recent run-in with a rouge lion had proved odd, since she had never known a fully grown male to act like a child, but she felt a bit wiser because of it. It just went to show that you couldn't judge people by their age. The rouge had called her various insulting names - brat, squirt - because of her age, but she had acted far more mature and responsible than he. Well...in her eyes, at least.

She lifted her head and scanned the horizon from her place by a small pool, the same area Anga had been in when she had come across him. This seemed like a good place to keep an eye out for any rouges traveling in the land. Although Anga hadn't presented a physical threat, she knew that the chance was out there for someone to come along that wished their peaceful pride harm. Or, alternately, there could be rouges looking for a place to live.

Fireheart's ears swiveled to the left as a faint snarl echoed through the trees. Her head followed and she got to her feet, alert and aware of her surroundings. Someone was coming her way. Slowly, from the lack of pounding feet, but they were headed in this direction nonetheless. A male, from the deep tone of the snarl.

She crouched low to the ground and slunk forward, moving around the pond and into the cover of some trees. She waited until the lion came into view before assessing the situation further. He didn't look to be a physical threat...he wasn't presenting the signs of someone searching for anything in particular. After a few moments she decided to call out.

"State your name and your business here," she said in a firm voice. She remained hidden for the time being, not wanting her younger age to influence the authoritative tone in her voice.

The voice came out of nowhere, strong and authoritative, but also ... feminine. The male had to hold back a snort as he scanned the area for an obvious sign of the caller - but nothing. Which meant he would have to look deeper - though he didn't know the area, he knew what to look for all too well. Keeping your eyes peeled for anything out of place, it was a cardinal rule for him. If you didn't know what surrounded you, you were in for trouble of all kinds.

"Vodnitvar - travelling rogue - at the mercy of whomever needs me -" He paused, straightening his demeanor like a good soldier and adding a bit of a smirk ... "Madam."

Dipping his head in slight respect for the lady, he kept his eyes peeled for out of place objects. But he didn't quite catch sight of her until he took his bow. That's when he noticed the large amount of brown and the tinge of gold, not so well blended in among the green trees she had chosen for a hiding spot. He held onto his smile, and raised himself back up to the ground, continuing on as though he had not seen her.

"What seems to be the trouble? I didn't step into a war zone did I?" He asked with a bored tone to his voice. "I assure you I mean you no harm, and if you need better proof of that, perhaps you should take a better look at me from wherever it is you're hiding." Changing positions slightly, he turned with a great deal of trouble, in a small circle. Allowing for the female to have a good view of the scars upon his mangled hip and leg. Although he knew her hiding spot - the full circle was necessary, as to not allow her to know exactly what it was, that he knew.

Fireheart kept her head low as the lion glanced around. She wondered how he hid from potential threats with such a blue coat like that, before realizing she wasn't exactly cameo material herself. She narrowed her eyes and pressed herself a bit closer to the ground, cursing her chosen hiding place. There were browner patches of grass around, but of course she didn't look at where she was going to put herself...she still had a lot to learn if she wanted to rise in the ranks of the warriors.

Ah, he didn't seem terribly threatening. As he spun in a slow circle, her eyes widened in surprise. Previously hidden, a mass of scars and painful-looking marks covered Vodnitvar's hip and leg that made her stomach twist. A few moments later and she decided he was safe - she could certainly outrun him if it came to that.

Fireheart stood, emerging from her hiding place, keeping a suspicious look on her face. It would be best to keep her guard up to let the male know she wasn't letting him off the hook so easily.

"If no harm is meant, then you should know you are dangerously close to my pride's borders. We are peaceful and any threat is not tolerated. However, if you are seeking to join a pride, I can take you to the appropriate lions that can assist you."

As the young lion emerged, Vodnitvar's face contorted into one of surprise. Admittedly some of it was forced to let her think she had been hidden well, but part of it was sincere. She was such a young thing - not even fully grown into her body yet. But she seemed quite strong willed, and capable of doing the job she was now doing. Color him impressed - if only slightly.

"Ah am I that close? I got lost in my own head again - i'm sorry for the fright I must have caused." He eyed the female, trying to figure out what he exact motives were. He face still held onto its sincerity, but could she truly be all that serious at such a young age? He allowed his mind to wander for a moment, to a time when he was her age. His interest in battle had never been stronger - but then he was a male. Never in his many years had he come to know a female with a taste for the fight.

"To join a pride huh? Oh nono, I think my life is much more suited for being alone. You see, most of the time I can be a bit of a nuisance to others, with my injuries. I think i'm much better off alone." He sighed, knowing in his heart that what he has said wasn't true. But at the moment, he was uninterested in a pride - he was far more interested in this female before him. What was her story exactly?

"So tell me ...

How does a female of such a young age, come to be the line of defense between her pride and little, old rogues?"
He smiled, allowing himself to sit down rather slowly. A painful grimace flashing across his face as he did so.

The suspicious look on Fireheart's face turned to a scowl for just a few moments at the look of surprise on Vodnitvar's. Another rouge that wouldn't take her seriously because of her age, it seemed. Wonderful. At least this one wasn't rolling around in a field of flowers and pretending to be some sort of kung fu master.

She kept her distance, not moving from her patch of grass as the lion continued to speak. Not interested in a pride? It wasn't unheard of, but what kind of rouge would want to be alone with an injury like that? Surely having a pride to help bring in food would be a relief. "Our pride is not one that requires all the members to hunt. Most come here from the rouge lands to find respite from things such as injuries or past prides." If he didn't wish to join, though, she wasn't going to push.

The question that followed ruffled her feathers a bit again and caused her to lift her head higher, trying to look bigger than she was. She was on the larger size for a female her age, but next to the lion she was still quite small. "Our lines of defense are not considered terribly important here," she said evenly. "I'm one of the few that consider border patrol to be something we should have as a staple. Danger is out there, it's just a matter of when it will come."

A pride of refugees? That's what she seemed to be saying - if so, she most certainly had his interest now. His eyes widened a bit more in surprise at her explanation, "Well then, I may have to take a small look around. A pride that requires little of those who can provide nothing, its quite intriguing." Vodnitvar smiled his awkward little smile. It wasn't something he was accustomed to doing, he was usually far more gruff and hard to speak with. But he had respect for authority, regardless of age, sex, or size and well he just so happened to be in the presence of someone in that mindset.

Her next comment took the male completely off guard, and his bod language showed it very well. "Well that's just silly! Danger lurks around every corner! It isn't safe to leave a pride of refugees and injured unprotected." Eyeing the female once more, he wondered for a split second if she were telling him some long fib. Were it not for the scents around him, he would have thought that to be true. But the smell of so many lions around here, couldn't be coincidence.

"You're quite smart for a girl your age aren't you?" He nodded to himself as though not really waiting for her input. "It isn't a wonder they didn't argue about having you on the front lines. Those with brains make the best leaders." Vodnitvar continued to assess the lioness, no longer caring if she was unnerved by his prying.

"What is your name young one? It'd be quite an honor to know the name of someone so sharp."

Fireheart remained where she was for a few moments longer before taking a few hesitant steps forward. She doubted the lion would be able to rise quickly, so a swift escape could be made if needed. He seemed the type not to lie, though, and for some reason she found herself trusting him far faster than she should. She pulled up with just a few yards between them, allowing herself to get a better look. He was certainly battle-worn, and that made her grow a bit excited. If Vodnitvar did join the pride, then perhaps she'd have someone to show her the ins and outs of battle. Hunting and fighting were two completely different things, after all.

The returned sentiment regarding danger made her ears p***k up in excitement, but after the quick break in her mask she quickly schooled her expression back to a neutral one. "Not all the members are injured or refugees, but we are quite welcoming of them." She decided not to mention the insanity that once - in her opinion - plagued her pride. If he truly did wish to join, he'd learn in time. Now the majority of them were voices free, and they were mostly in good health.

"You make it sound as though I'm still a cub," Fireheart muttered, lowering her head and her ears in disapproval. "I'm nearly fully grown!" She had to stop herself from stamping in the ground like a child and winced at her own immaturity. "I mean...thank you." It had been a compliment, hadn't it? "Most of the pride members my age are more interested in watching the sun move across the sky and wait for night to have fun. So yes, I suppose it's a bit of a wonder that they trust me as much as they do."

Lifting her head again, she met Vodnitvar's green eyes with her own sea foam ones, holding his gaze evenly. "Fireheart," she said, giving her Gypsy name as was custom.

He tried to keep his cool, he really did, but she was a little too amusing when it came to her age. Apparently it was quite a touchy issue for her, which meant it was all the funnier to him. "Oh no, you shouldn't misinterpret my words, misunderstandings are a gateway to trouble you know." He laughed before continuing. "I merely mean that when you take an interest at a young age - you can only improve from there. It is a compliment really. It warms the heart to see someone young interested in pride safety. Most lions only fall into protection ranks due to size or lineage. But you seem dedicated to it. Good on you!" He smiled hoping his odd, quarky ways would weasel him out of the trouble he seemed to have ended up in.

"An even better example! Instead of worrying over silly things, you took an interest in your pride. In my experience dedication can be hard to come by. You should be glad the gods have graced you with it." Vodnitvar then took the opportunity to go silent, realizing he was being a bit of a jabber mouth. But at the introduction of her name, he felt compelled to speak up.

"And I could think of nothing more fitting." Dipping his head once more in respect, he spoke up one final time. "And as is custom, I will share my name with you.

I am Vodnitvar, what a pleasure it is to meet you Fireheart.

Now tell me a little more about yourself and this pride of yours. I have to admit you've got my attention now."

Fireheart gave a little snort as Vodnitvar backpedaled a bit. She nodded at his explanation, though, not wanting to appear rude to the older lion. In reality she really wasn't used to the praise he was giving her and, although it was flattering, she wasn't quite sure what to do in return. The pride never really praised their warriors unless they did something of value, like taking down a wild rouge or protecting them from a threat. Simply guarding the border wasn't something to sing songs about.

"We are called the Kizingo'Zaa, and it's a very relaxed pride, as I have mentioned," Fireheart said, deciding that she could risk sitting with the male for a while. She lowered her haunches and sat down, facing the male still. She was curious to know about his scars, but where they had just met, she figured it could be a story for another time. "Most of the pride focus on their crafts, be it song and dance, fortune telling, crafting out of wood or stone, alchemists...very little focus is placed on expanding borders and such. We live in a very secure area and not many know of us or our existence here. We would like to keep it that way," she added, giving him a look that clearly said 'if you tell anyone, you're in trouble'. He hadn't agreed to stay yet, after all.

"If you do join you'll be required to select a gypsy name for yourself that others will call you by, save for those closest to you. That is really the only requirement here other than selecting a profession."

"That's quite an interesting concept .. a pride within plain sight .. that other's hardly know exists." Vodnitvar allowed the information to absorb into his thick skull, as he tried interpret how it was they kept their elusive pride so ... elusive. Really he could only assume that there were elite guards out there that Fireheart didn't know about - or perhaps she wasn't telling him about. But if such wasn't the case, his intrigue was only peaked that much more. He winked at her stern look and chuckled. "Relax, my lips are sealed. Besides even if I were to say anything, do you think anyone would believe a crazy old lion like myself? About a pride hidden in plain sight?"

Trailing off of his point all the more, he continued to listen intently to her words. If nothing else, he should at least show her the respect since he had requested the information.

"A gypsy name huh? It doesn't have to be anything frilly or silly does it?" His mouth twisted into a form of disgust, but it faded just as quickly when he realized her name wasn't all that silly. But - just to be clear, he needed to ask.

"Our main home is deep in the jungle which is beyond these mountains," Fireheart explained, nodding behind her where steep cliffs shot up out of the ground. "It's not easy to get to if you're not looking for it. And those who do find us generally want to stay when they see what it's like." It was a very nice place to live, full of food and water, with the sandy beach just a few minutes walk from the shade of the jungle and protection all around in the form of the mountains and the ocean.

Her ears twitched a bit at Vodnitvar's question and it took considerable self restraint not to snap at him. Her name wasn't...frilly or silly or whatever he had said! She had picked it out herself, so obviously she felt very strongly about it. "There are those with...slightly silly names, but it's up to your digression what you call yourself. Usually it has something to do with your trade, but that's not always the case."

She stood and tilted her head just a bit, surveying the older lion. "So, to answer your question, no. It doesn't have to be silly if you don't wish it to be."

As he listened to her explanation his resolve became a little more clear. He hadn't been out in search of a pride - but perhaps a pride had been in search of him? Was it something that was meant to be? He didn't know, but he wasn't about to knock a possible gift horse in the mouth.

Nodding his head at her final exclamation he dipped his head to the female once more.

"Hm, in that case, would you do me the pleasure of a tour? I apologize in advance, i'll likely be a bit slow, but it would be an honor to be escorted by you." He smiled vaguely at the female, hoping she would allow him to continue on to her home.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:50 pm

Fireheart eyed the male warily for a few minutes. He had given no reason for her to be suspicious, but it was in her nature to be cautious around new lions. Vodnitvar had been very respectful, though, and it was honestly a breath of fresh air. She finally nodded and motioned for him to follow her.

"Slow is fine. We have a bit of a climb so let me know if you need a rest." She enjoyed the view from the mountains anyway, so pausing from time to time wouldn't be a problem for her. With a flick of her tail she was off, padding back in the direction she had come from.
