User Image Treacherous Snow slunk forward, her belly heavy with young not hindering her inherently graceful movements. She moved silently through the swamp, ears pricked for life that warranted her attention and eyes sweeping the area in front of her for anything that moved more than she liked. Trotting close to her side was Watch Your Step who was equally alert and perhaps more on edge and less at ease that Cornice who, although alert and looking for life, seemed unconcerned at what exactly might spring out of the shadows and try and take a bite out of her. The fact of the matter was, Cornice was looking for a legendary and Caution was looking for predators.

Cornice had heard that there was a legendary that frequented this area of the swamp, and when she had heard of his personality, she had decided that he would do. The last blessing she had received had ended in what could only be deemed an utter failure. Two children in a nearly incestuous relationship, one completely mad, and the other lofty, ditzy, and without any common sense. Only one had ended up with the cunning that she had been blessed for. This time, Cornice was looking for a legendary who would bless her children right, especially when this was a clutch that was bound of be strong of body. Knowing that this legendary she was seeking would not require her to smile and simper was a plus. She looked for logic and cunning, a strong mind to match a strong body, simple as that.

Rounding around a tree, she came upon what seemed to be a cave and stopped. This must be it.User Image

One flag, above all others, would let her know she was in the right place -- half-hidden in a shadow, half-dappled with sunlight, a disgustingly blue turtle lounged near the entrance of the cave, his jaw working in a slow chew on something he'd been at for ages. Crunch looked dormant, still except for that chew, slumped in the cool shade, but if Treacherous Snow had talked to anyone about Nettle, she likely would have heard the truth about this beast.

The turtle was mean. Vicious. Intractable. Only Peeper could get it to calm and obey.

As for the legendary...no sign of Nettle himself, nor of the snake form that he so often took. Most likely he, as well, had retreated to where it was cool, the depths of his comfortable cave.

Watch Your Step often took point when approaching creatures that were of the more volatile nature, if only because the gryphon could fly and rather liked screeching and flapping her wings every once in a while, and perhaps during the times when her partner was with child, she rather knew to protect her. And so, with little more than a quick glance at Treacherous Snow, Watch Your Step advanced on the turtle before stopped a respectful distance away and tilting her head. Their meeting relationship didn't stay respectful for long though, Watch Your Step squawked rather loudly at the turtle trying to command it to stop chewing that disgusting piece of over-chewed something.

While Watch Your Step was doing that, Treacherous Snow herself moved closer, but off to the side her gold eyes sharp as she looked for the legendary that must be nearby. She was careful not to get too close, but neither was she timid in her movements. The turtle might be vicious, but she was quick.

One eye blinked at then the other -- Crunch watching the gryphon in a distracted, absent way, somewhat indifferent as to its screech. He chewed. He swallowed. He chewed more. He didn't so much budge from where he was settled, with one eye on Watch Your Step and the other on the Kimeti attempting to wriggle her way around and past him.

The sound, though, got something in reply, at least; a rustle of sound from deeper in the cave, something that might have been a curse before it faded back into silence. If Treacherous Snow wanted her blessing, she was going to have to be bold.

The rustled caught her attention and her ears immediately swiveled forward to pin the sound. More importantly, something that had sounded like a voice was come from the cave. At this point, the draw of being this close to getting the blessing she wanted outweighed the thought that it might be better not to harm the turtle that belonged to the legendary. Hopefully, it would come to that though.

A flicked of her tail and Watch Your Step took a position that made it very clear that she would flip the turtle over if he so much as took a single turtle step towards Cornice. And if he tried anything, there would be talons in his future.

That done, Treacherous Snow advanced to the entrance of the cave making to walk around the turtle and enter.

Not so much as a budge from Crunch, barely even a look. Perhaps it was the weather that was leaving him like this. Or maybe it was just that he'd had an exhausting morning of chewing on grass, turning into an exhausting afternoon of chewing on grass, rapidly accelerating toward an exhausting evening of...

She could sneak by. Certainly, if she just stuck toward the other side User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. And there was another turtle. This one distinctively different, with an unusual glow to its eyes, still working its way out of a pile of reeds and ferns against one wall. It saw her and froze, head tipped to one side and expression grumpy, displeased.

Nettle didn't say anything, just glared at her.

Treacherous Snow was, perhaps, slightly disappointed that the turtle hadn't given Watch Your Step a reason to flip it over, but she couldn't be too disappointed since she was here to get a blessing not to pick fights with turtles. Turtles wouldn't be her first choice of prey anyways. And then there was another turtle, with glowing eyes.

It glared at her and Cornice merely stared impassively back. This must be the legendary and if he wanted to glare, he could glare all he wanted, this was his cave after all. Let him get some of that glaring out of his system and then she would speak.

One of his legs kicked out to shed the last of the greenery, his eyes never straying from her, just giving off that faint yellow light -- something that, likely, she had never seen in a turtle, before. It made the creature weirdly kin, despite being one of the lesser life forms. Its movements helped, pacing around her to squint at the beast outside at last, even in turtle form he seemed impatient and, perhaps, unhappy to have been interrupted. He snorted a breath out of his nose as he looked back at her.

Expectant. Silent. Annoyed. Some of the other legendaries would have greeted her cheerfully and happily. Not Nettle. He'd never be done glaring, so she might as well speak.

Resisting the urge to toss her head, Cornice looked at the turtle and spoke evenly, announcing the obvious because though Cornice may not enjoy nor even understand the usual societal niceties, she was not blind to them. "I come seeking a blessing for the children I carry."

"I do not come looking for a blessing of happiness or to know ones heart, or even physical strength for I do not doubt that they will be strong of body. I come to you who has gained the reputation of being quite like your namesake because I seek logic, a clear mind, and common sense."

She did not smile or make nice, she had laid out why she had came, what she sought and if he chose not to bless her children so be it. There were other legendaries in the swamp, even another in the area, though she was not so keen for that legendary's blessing.

No indeed; Peeper was perfect for good-natured children, for cheerfulness, for energy, but no one had ever accused him of having good sense. Or any sense, for that matter; his choice of partners, this crotchety turtle that looked up at her and sniffed disapprovingly, wasn't exactly what most people hunted for.

Very few kin spent more time than they had to in Nettle's presence.

"You said 'I' four times in that little speech." It was derisive, Nettle starting back toward the cave mouth to investigate the gryphon. It was possible he'd never seen one before. "Do you always say 'I' that much?"

The turtle sniffed at her disapprovingly and Cornice supposed that he disapproved of nearly everykin (as did she but she would never show it). Somekin else's disapproval never meant anything to Cornice and her only response was an even, unmoved look.

Barely moving when there was finally a response, Cornice shrugged at his question. "I do, because when I speak, I speak for myself, so I wouldn't be surprised if I say I very often. I would not say you so often because I don't pretend to know what you wish, think, or want to say."

Her last mate had said you rather too much for her liking.

With the approach of an another turtle, Watch Your Step ruffled her feathers and turned to fix that turtle with a hard stare. Too many turtles and not enough fun prey for her liking.

If that was meant to put him in his place, it failed; instead it brought a light to his eyes, amused and satisfied with what he deemed a fairly petty reply. In Nettle's head, apparently, he had just scored a point. The tally might be different to Treacherous Snow, though.

He paced further away, into the mouth of the cave and out just one step -- not far enough to enter the light, but enough that he could get a really good look at Watch your Step. This creature was much more interesting than the imperious doe trespassing in his cave. Nettle had met many of those before. Never a beast like this.

He hummed, hunkered a bit in his shell, watching the gryphon. "What is that?"

Though the phrase wasn't meant to mean anything more than to answer his inquiry and not to put him in his place, because really, Cornice never bothered with such things. If he did not like her answer, then he would not. He was entitled to that. And if it amused him because he thought himself better than her, she couldn't really bring herself to care.

Following the turtle to the edge of the cave, Cornice watched as Watch Your Step decided that the new turtle was more interesting and approached slightly before stopping. She answered simply this time, because apparently explanation were not appreciated, "She is a gryphon."

It served anyway. He took half a step out to squint his eyes, the glow narrowing as he did, giving a glimpse of orange behind it. Not all of the Ascended Kimeti out there were old, despite how they looked -- but Nettle, at least, really was. Older than most of the people who came through here, or perhaps all. The beast made him frown.

"...I should like to have one." It was simple, direct. Perhaps simply the fact that Watch your Step's beak was sharp and wicked, that it was bigger than a turtle and more of a deterrent to wandering strangers. He looked back at her, chin hiked up, and as he twisted he took on his normal form again -- giving him more height, so that he could meet her eyes. "Where did you find it?"

Legendaries were growing less rare as more kin were chosen, but even so, she had only met one before this one. When the stag simply proclaimed that he would like a gryphon, she was not surprised.

She was also not surprised as she watched the legendary take his normal form and met his eyes calmly. "She was given to me by two kimeti by the name of Whispers of a Storm and Shattered Skies who found her as an egg in the far reaches of the swamp."
