Herryk was busy. In one beefy arm he hefted a thick stack of flyers that Cady had made. The flyers indicated that prom was coming and that the skreejays were looking for songs to play. He was pasting them at one foot intervals along the walls of the cafeteria, clumsily pulling off strips of tape from a small roll he carried with him.

The process was tedious, and since Herryk had only two well-muscled arms with which to work, it was slow going, too.

"Posting flyers. It is so ridiculous. Post flyers, Cady says. Need music, Cady says."

A loud snort.

"Herryk should have made JD do this."

The grumbling continued as the flyer-posting went on.

Taima had taken a brief break from reading up on the 9000 classes she had already signed herself up for in the day and a half she'd been at the school, walking from her room to the cafeteria and only getting lost once. She pushed through the door tentatively, certain that the school could only have one boil's locker room and that the guys who had been in that one would forgive her eventually. She was relieved to find that she had finally found the right building, devoid of all but a few students, one of whom seemed to be papering the walls and talking to himself.

She glanced at the flyers he was putting up, pulling one down and reading it before looking up and waving it at him. "Hey, you, big guy," Taima said, trying to get his attention. "What's this about a prom?"

Oh.

Oh.

Oh.

Oh no she didn't.

Herryk slowly shuffled in a half-circle to gaze down upon the bird-girl, one eye twitching with menace. The flyer she'd pulled down had been he'd put up not ten minutes ago - it broke the perfect circle of flyers that he'd been painstakingly plastering to the walls.

"It is a dance," Herryk groused, eyeing the flyer she clutched in her hand. "Herryk will be doing music with Cady." His jaw clenched as he lifted his gaze to meet hers.

"Is this little bird new to the school? Herryk has never seen this one before. Also, Herryk's name is not Big Guy. Herryk's name is Herryk."

Redundant much?

Oh yes she did. Taima countered his foreboding aura with the kind of aloof disinterest that only a teenager can really pull off, letting it roll over her like rainwater. She totally wasn't intimidated by this mountain of a man that could probably crush her like a bug.

Totally.

"A dance?" Already, a welcome distraction from all the work she hadn't started yet. "Sounds like fun. I'll be there." Sleep was for the weak anyway.

"Sorry, what was your name again? Herryk? Just want to make sure," she replied, her tone only a little mocking. "Yes, Herryk, I'm new here. I just transferred a few days ago. And this little bird's name is Taima."

Herryk was only slightly taken aback by Taima's sass; dating a valkyrie that came from a family primarily composed of very ah.. forward sisters had given Herryk an edge when it came to being confronted with this certain flavor of sassitude.

"Yes, little bird - oh, excuse Herryk, Taima." A broad, white grin flashed against his dark skin. "Where did Taima transfer from, then?"

"Herryk is excused," Taima replied with faux loftiness before breaking the pretense with a smile of her own. It was a refreshing change to see that people here weren't uptight or Srs McBsns all the time. "Oh, I came from Wayaway High. So boring. Nothing ever happened there," other than a few small fires in the science labs, none of which anyone could ever pin on her. s**t happens when you stick a bunch of kids in a school in the middle of nowhere and tell them to enjoy it.

"Nothing like this," she continued, waving the flyer for emphasis. "We never had anything like a dance at my old school. Do these happen often?"

"Every year, as far as Herryk knows. It is only Herryk's first full year here at Amity." The draugr's broad shoulders hefted in a shrug as he turned to plaster yet another flyer to the wall. "There is also Scarentines fun, and uh."

Herryk looked thoughtful.

"Terrible field trips. Herryk likes to warn all new students of the of field trips. It would seem that the field trips never end well."

Terrible field trips that never end well? Taima's interest was immediately piqued. "How so?" Taima inquired. "Tell me everything. We never got to go on field trips."

Herryk made a thoughtful sound.

"The first field trip that Herryk went on. It was terrible. The second field trip that Herryk went on, it was also terrible. In fact, on the last trip - ahh, it is too much to tell all at once."

Herryk set the supplies down on a nearby table and rubbed his shoulder.

"There are false reapers that little Taima must watch out for. They are humans - and they ... " Herryk quieted.

"This is not the best conversation for a new ghoul." Herryk grinned. "Just be careful, hmm?"

Terrible. Okay. "Herryk, terrible is an adjective, not an explanation. Elaborate, please." Her feathers ruffled as she waited for Herryk to actually complete a thought, and she frowned when that just never happened.

"Herryk. What false reapers? What do the humans do? I won't be the new ghoul forever, and I won't know what to be careful of unless you tell me, so if you don't tell me and I get hurt, it will be all your fault," she reasoned.

Herryk gave the ghoul a very serious look. She'd just made herself his responsibility, and it was not a task the draugr took lightly. In fact, it was probably a very unwise thing for her to do; Herryk was going into big brother mode.

"The hunters. The humans, with their traps and their guns and their bombs and their guns. It is... not a good thing, and Taima must be very careful of who she speaks with."

He narrowed his eyes.

"Herryk does not want Taima to be taken away."

The shift in Herryk's demeanor should have been an indication to stop pressing the issue, to shift the conversation to something lighter and more appropriate for a first conversation with a new acquaintance, but he'd dropped all these hints and she couldn't not pursue them. "I'll be careful," she assured him, smiling thinly. "I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm a big ghoul, you know? I can tie my own shoelaces and everything."

Her boots didn't actually have laces, but that's beside the point.

Still, these hunters didn't sound like anyone she'd want to meet in a dark alley. "Have they done that?" Taima asked, her voice low as though the hunters might be listening, her eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. "Do they just...come here and take people?"
