Ami shifted nervously from one foot to the other. The bag in her hand was sort of awkwardly shuffled into one hand as she rang the doorbell to Gale's house. A spritely girl answered the door, asked what she needed, and then directed her to Wilson's makeshift "bed" in the house. The girl then realized she needed to go do something-or-other and left.

Before she just waltzed in, Ami knocked on the door frame (of which there was no door, because this was in fact an open room) lightly and said, "Wilson? The girl told me you were in here ..." Come to think of it, she didn't even get the girl's name. Oops.

The bag shifted once again in her arms. It was heavy! Note to self: next time pack something lighter.

Somewhere in the background, Wilson heard the doorbell ring. He heard it, but not quite. He was just a bit too focused on what he was currently doing. Vaguely, the man heard Eva shuffle over to answer the door and mutter some words, but he didn’t think too much of it. When Ami found Wilson, she would find him on the couch alright.

Except he was upside down, his sneakers hanging over the edge. In his hands were a puzzle book and a pencil entwined between fingers. He looked up—down?—to realize that the person who had rang the doorbell was Ami. “Oh, hey.” He smiled and moved to sit back up like a normal person. Wilson glanced at the box, but chose to say nothing. “What do you need?”

Ami gripped her bag a little tighter with nervousness. Only Wilson would do something so idiotic and spontaneous that it threw her off her normal, placid demeanor.

"I ... I brought food," she said quickly, holding up the bag and setting it on a small table next to the couch. "There's ... chicken soup and fudge and ... some other things." She clasped her hands tightly together.

This was so hard for her. Apologizing and bowing her head wasn't in the Ami manual. "I'm really sorry you got hurt on the mission. I ... should've ... should've protected you I guess. Ah ..." She was looking down and awkwardly shuffling from foot to foot.

This was not her strong suit, and she had no clue what the ******** she was doing.

Ami, you don’t understand. Sitting upside down actually has multiple health benefits that range from better blood circulation to more oxygen to the head—which was sort of the effect he was going for considering the fact he was doing puzzles and could use all the brain power he could get.

Also sitting upside down was fun.

His face brightened up at the mention of food, although he didn’t know why what convinced Ami to bring it. “Really? Thanks!” What he did know, however, was that Ami was looking a bit out of place. He scooted to the side and offered the brunette a seat on the couch. “Oh, that mission? It’s alright. I don’t blame you for that at all. It all worked out in the end, right?” Sans the watching anime on the big screen part, but oh well.

Ami nodded slowly and sat down beside Wilson, placing her hands politely in her lap. "Sit up you look so stupid," she said harshly.

< Ami be nice. >

I CAN'T.

She shook her head slowly and said, "No, Marcus was right ... I didn't act like a moon. I should've been right out there protecting you and making sure you made it to the portal safely." She looked down and said, "Instead I was so focused on the mission ... on succeeding ..." She played with her nails, trying to hide her embarassment. "Well I guess you can see why I switched." A weak, awkward laugh followed.

He smiled easily and laughed. The harsh reply wasn’t surprising. “Okay, okay,” he relented. Wilson leaned against the couch, the book of puzzles still in his lap. Sometimes he would scribble down a number or letter, but for the most apart he attentively listened to Ami.

“It’s alright. We have those days, right? It was only one mistake. Don’t take it too hard, okay?” he reassured her. The smile slipped for a second as he shot a look to the emblem blazoned on her jacket. Oh, that was right. It wasn’t the familiar crescent moon anymore. Now it was the sprawling branches of a tree. “I…see,” he murmured softly. He put the smile back on. “Well, I thought you made for a decent moon, but if you feel more comfortable in Life, then I won’t argue against it.”

Ami smiled lightly. He thought she was decent. In Ami's eyes, that meant even Wilson couldn't see her as anything better than "decent." He'd meant it as a compliment, but Ami took it as pity.

"Seven," she said, looking down at his puzzle book. He'd get which one she was talking about.

She pulled her feet up onto the couch and wrapped her arms around them. "Listen Wilson, I ..."

< Go! You can do it Ams. >

The simple nickname had her reeling. Adam, the incident, her insanity nightmare. They rushed forward, all at once, bombarding her memories.

Her voice faltered, and she said, "I put celery in the soup. I hope that's okay." A wave of disappointment swamped her. This was pitiful.

Wilson smiled back.

There was mild confusion in his eyes as he looked down at the book in his grasp. His face lit up with soft recognition before he nodded his head and scribbled down the number. “Thanks.” Another warm grin. He sank deeper into the couch, his fingers loosely holding the pencil in his hand. “Yeah?” His expression was expectant, but filled with easygoing warmth. Now that the last of the fog had disappeared and with little to do on the island, it was peaceful. It was calm.

He caught the falter in her voice, but Wilson couldn’t fathom why, so he silently filed it in the back of his mind for him to mull over afterward. Wilson kept smiling softly. “Yeah, it’s okay. It’s important to eat your vegetables?” Soft laughter as his mother’s stern tone echoed in his thoughts. Silence. “Is there anything else?” he asked tentatively.

Ami stood up, a strange disappointment in her eyes. "No, that's it." She started walking towards the exit, face to the ground in shame that Wilson wouldn't understand.

< Coward. >

Shut up Jumpy.

This was for the better. She'd keep her feelings under lock and key, and Wilson would be happy with Em. Life would move on and everyone would be happy. Well except her.

But it's not like that mattered anyways.

"Feel better," she said quietly, walking towards the door.

There was a strange look in Ami’s eyes when she stood up. Wilson cocked his head to the side like a curious puppy. He leaned forward slightly as the other trainee began to head for the door. “Are you sure?”

That’s…odd. [You think so, kid?] I’m pretty sure she wanted to say something else.

“You came here for something else, right?” he called out to her as he fell back against the couch again. Wilson grinned. “If you have something you want to ask or whatever, you should say it now. It’s fine.”

Crap even Wilson could tell now. The way he was goading her to say it ... Something about it angered her, but something about it made her feel extremely sorry to herself. She didn't need her hand held through her own feelings! She could do it herself. She was getting sick of people baby-talking her about what to do. Her hands clamped at her side angrily.

"I really like you!" she said, turning around to meet his gaze before she could even stop herself or back out. "The way you're always helping people and smiling about it- It ... it makes me feel things." The words were fumbling out now and she was helpless to their stream. It just came out like a cascade. "When you were out there- in the crowd- goddamn Wilson I was so afraid to lose you because- because-" Her voice grew quieter. "Because I really, really like you."

She clamped her mouth shut. She'd said too much already. Her eyes were drilling holes in the ground- there was no way she could meet his gaze with the rosey red painting her face.

This didn't feel like a real confession. It felt like a childish playground confession where Wilson would respond "ewww cooties!"

s**t.

Wilson would have scolded himself if he hadn’t noticed. He was a death hunter. He was supposed to notice these kinds of details, but maybe he wasn’t as observant as he thought he was.

OvO????? Like? Him? Ami liked him? As a friend? No, that didn’t warrant food and awkwardness. “You…like me?” His lips moved, but his voice was soft. His words were more of a mumble to himself and filled with curious wonder. It was a difficult concept to wrap his mind around. He hadn’t toyed with the idea since he had confessed to Em. The smile slowly disappeared into a thin line while Wilson curiously stared at the other hunter. “I…” His voice drifted off, making way for the rest of Ami’s confession.

He turned toward the book in his hands and put it on the table. Slowly, with a hesitant expression, Wilson stood up. He wouldn’t answer her sitting down. That…just didn’t seem right. Wilson took a couple steps, but kept his distance. “I really appreciate that you got the courage to tell me this, but…“ A mixture of sincere guilt and hurt flashed across his face. “I already have someone I love very much.” Purple eyes and a dainty smile came to mind. “So I can’t answer your feelings. I’m sorry.”

For every step Wilson took, Ami took a step away. Somehow, even in her logcial mind that TOLD her he was going to say no, there was a tiny part that hoped for a yes. She shied away from hearing the truth because ... well who wanted to be told they weren't up to par?

Ami's voice didn't come at first. She pursed her lips and rubbed her ear. For some odd reason, she'd learned that for herself, that was the trick to not crying. If she cried in front of Wilson, she'd never forgive herself. Dignity just went out the window when you cried in front of someone else. Rubbing her ear distracted her, and kept it from coming out. Simple things.

"I know," she said quietly. Of course she knew. Em and Wilson were inseparable after all. It was a stupid attempt anyways. The tiny hope in her went out like a candle being extinguished by the overwhelming wave of logic. "Don't feel guilty. I shouldn't have come," she said, knowing that look on his face. "If ... If you don't mind, I'm going to go." She turned around and bit her lip, hard.

< A- >

No.

Silence filled her mind after that as she slowly tip-toed to the door. Painstakingly slowly. It seemed as though the doorframe never quite reached her feet. Silence from Junpei still. There was nothing else that needed to be said after all.

His face contorted with helpless pain. Wilson reached out toward Ami and took another step forward. “Ami—“ [Don’t.] His partner’s raspy voice rang in his hand, clear and firm and knowing. [Just stay right here. The damage is done. It couldn’t be helped. She knew.] “Right. Okay…” His hand clenched into a fist and he brought his arm back. “Right…” Wilson turned around as he heard the door click shut. “That turned out fantastic.” His laugh was hollow as he sat back down on the couch. He leaned forward to push away the puzzle book.
