Amidst the trees, the mare sat and glanced over pieces of paper with things scrawled across them. In her mouth she held a quill; feathers tied together and dipped in a black liquid. She made a few markings here and there. The markings were neat and precise and such a skill came with years of practice. When she had first started out, she'd made a mess all over and had even spilt the ink.
Yálie scratched down names and it became clear she was working on a family tree of sorts; a record of all those in the Evermore Herd. Their ranks, roles, children and mates. This was just the rough copy of course, the real version would have pictures and be decorative. Each member would have their own page afterwards. This was Yálie's masterpiece and she was determined to make it perfect.
Placing the quill down, mindful of the ink, she stretched out under the sun and let out a yawn. It had been a long day and she'd been sitting for quite some time. Standing, she stretched out her legs and rolled her stiff neck.

Silence. Silence.... it was strange, this lack of commotion which usually caused the air to be rather thick. Butterflies ranging in colors from blue to purples drifted in the wind. They appeared almost weightless before they found a bright colored flower to drink sweet nectar from. Birds chirped songs to one another and in the distance the sound of water rolling along a small stream could be heard. It was almost peaceful.
That was all ruined when large, purple stallion pushed his way through the trees in the direction of a clearing he knew of. Chains cackled amongst themselves as the keys dangling in front of the male's chest chimed, teasing him of potential escape.
Papillon stared apologetically at the butterflies that rested on the flowers, then at the birds when they flew away from the horrid sound of the metal scraping against metal. These were the sounds he knew all too well and had grown used to. Without them, the world would seem too empty. Suddenly, the stallion's nostrils flared as he caught the scent of... well actually it was something he hadn't quite smelled before. His head tilted as he headed in the direction of the foul smell.

Yálie's ears twitched and perked up; the sound of birds squawking as they were disrupted the first thing that alerted her of someone heading in her direction. Another sound followed; one she hadn't heard before. It was.. horrid; the kind of sound you only hear in nightmares. She eyed her work before her and pursed her lips; wondering if perhaps it was time to pack up and retreat to the safety of the herd lands. As the sound drew nearer, she panicked and jittered around, trying to pack everything up. In her haste, she spilt her pot of ink; the black liquid covering the papers she was working on.
"Well, shoot!" She cursed and kicked the ground, scattering leaves and dirt across her now ruined masterpiece. "I'd better actually be in danger, now. Else this was a big waste." She picked objects up in her mouth, placing them inside a satchel that had also suffered some new colour. "Looks like I'll need to get a new satchel, too."
Yálie grumbled under her breath and continued kicking at the ground. She plucked a large leaf from one of the trees nearby and sat with her satchel, attempting to clean the ink off the leather. "I can't exactly leave with ink dripping off this. I'll leave a trail right home," she mumbled as she smeared the leaf and, subsequently, the ink all over the bag.

The chains rattled and scraped against each other a little longer, until something else caught the stallion's ear. Suddenly, a new sound danced along in the breeze. Leaves chattering, a feminine voice cursing, and all sort of other commotion could easily be heard from where the stallion was pacing along. His purple ears nervously twitched back and forth as the stallion listened closely, wondering what he was getting himself into as he slowly approached the area where the assumed mare was scurrying about. His mind buzzed with the potential threats that could be lurking just around this grouping of trees the mare was amongst.
As Papillon approached, not only did the rattling of chains screech through the air, but leaves crunching under the male's heavy hoofs were also screaming out. His ears flicked as an apologetic look appeared on his face once more. He was not the quietest of individuals around, that was for sure. Part of him felt bad for this, but he couldn't help it even if he wanted to. Didn't knights in shining armor clatter about as they marched on to save their princess'?
When Papillon's blue eyes finally caught sight of the brown mare, he smiled charmingly and bowed his head. "Hello ma'am." He noticed she seemed a bit frightened and sighed softly at himself. How awful... his presence had scared this poor mare. "I apologize if I frightened you in any way." Although there wasn't much an apology could do for her ruined items, at least she knew he meant no harm now.

The sound of.. well she wasn't exactly sure what she was hearing, but it didn't exactly sound friendly or cuddly. But at the same time, it sounded a bit musical. Jingle, jingle, clank, clank. She almost found herself bobbing along to the sound, but shook her head and set her mind free of the silliness. The sound of hooves crunching towards her steeled her and she stood strong, attempting to look menacing - something that was no easy task considering how small she was.
As the stallion came into the clearing, she let out an audible sigh of relief, her whole body relaxing. He wasn't a skin walker and she felt safe, regardless if he was evil or not. Smiling, she shook her head.
"No bother, I'm just a spook. A rabbit could send me off," she gave a laugh, though it was half hearted as she realised how pathetic she must seem. "Are you a musician?" She leaned forward and sniffed at the chains at his side, nose wrinkling. "I've never heard a sound like that before, but it's interesting. What is it called?"
As smart as Yálie was (or claimed to be), she'd not seen many man-made things, besides a few scrolls and books and maps.

Kind, comforting words fluttered through the stallion's ear as he listened to the mare's lovely voice. A smile tugged at his maw as he nodded his head to the fawn colored mare. Now, he could feel a little more at ease knowing that it wasn't just him and the chains that adorned his purple body that would cause this mare to skitter about the way she had before he approached. He hoped the mare didn't honestly live in constant fear, but then again it was good to be cautious of your surroundings, especially in a kalona and skinwalker filled environment.
The tall, muscular stallion peered down at the contrasting and more petite mare. Her questions felt like an almost slap to the face, though not a bad slap... It was more like a wake up call than a smack. Quirking a brow, Papillon looked at the chains that he had always thought were a curse, a mobile torture chamber. "These?" He asked as he lifted a front leg and caused the metal to make such a racket once more until they finally found a resting spot and quieted down once more to allow their master to speak.
Papillon debated with himself for a moment. Would he tell the mare of the harm the humans caused or would he make these pests become something beautiful? Finally, he sighed. She should know the truth for her own safety. "Chains. These things are called chains or human torture devices." His eyes lowered for a moment, slightly embarrassed that he even had these things draped around his body.LOLTERNATIVE I'm sorry this took so long!
