What are some things that help you feel happier, calmer, or otherwise better, regardless of the situation? It doesn't matter if they help only a little, or if the amount they help varies--what matters is that they help.
I know that I have said in another thread that I like music and video games. Sometimes, they barely help, or they end up making my head hurt. There's a few things I've discovered in the past few months that can help no matter what.
One of those things is anime. It definitely depends on which animes, of course, but some just bring me in. Ouran High School Host Club, a humorous one, always makes me smile. Every episode, regardless of how bad I'm feeling. Fullmetal Alchemist, which is a darker steampunk-y one, has a plot that I like with likeable characters and well-placed humor. It doesn't necessarily make me feel happier, but I can always get some excitement out of it.
Another is singing. I'm not great at singing and refuse to do so in front of others, but it's really fun. And the rare occasions where I end up sounding decent make me feel a little bit proud of myself. It's a nice hobby, and can be very expressive.
The third is ponies. There's something about MLP music and MLP friendship that just makes me happy. Not to mention the incredible fanmade music. But I'm sure everyone's heard all about that.
And then, of course, you can't forget friends.

"Ich hab' euch etwas mitgebracht...
Music. The number one in my life.
The next is when I have my love around, he holds me tight until I feel better.
...Ich hab' es aus meiner Brust gerissen!"

When I panic, I find that mint gum or really cold air helps a little. Or the combo of the 2

Distractions is the key thing. If you're distracted by another horror or most prefer something comfortable/pleasurable, you won't be thinking about what originally upset you.
Healthy distractions are: Exercising (any physical activities or hobbies) Naps Responsibilities (such as work, or children, you HAVE to keep smiling for children) Taking breaks in between your duties (to cry a bit or to regain your composure) Socializing Yelling, writing, or crying out your pain, problems, frustrations at a wall or somewhere someone can't hear you. It's wonderful if you have a buddy to yell with you that you trust, then it feels less silly. Do something silly or embarrassing but it was fun for you (like playing dance games that you would never have played with other people because you're afraid you'll suck) Karaoke Music Drawing, even if you suck at it, for that 5 minutes of playing "connect the dot" you can't think about being sad. If you did, then you're not focusing hard enough. Movies (escapism to fantasy~) Self-help and Motivational Articles (find answers and closures instead of struggling on your own, it may have already been solved by someone else already, find shortcuts!) Listing and making trophies somehow of all of your accomplishments Writing down your problems on a piece of paper and burning it up with a torch Camping Meditating
Unhealthy are: Alcohol Over sleeping Over working Ignoring all of your responsibilities (it creates a negative chain reaction and mess for the future you to deal with) Listing and making trophies of all of your problems and rereading it
These are some of the things that I kept having to cycle, and a bit too vigorously, throughout a day or days.
