So, his rite of passage hadn't gone so well. But was that his fault? ...Well, maybe it had been his fault, but Jua'johari was working on fixing whatever had gone wrong during his first hunt. Maybe he hadn't pressed himself against the ground low enough when he had been stalking? Nahh, he had that covered. He'd practiced like, a million times--ever since he was a cub. Was it the running part? Maybe is stamina was lacking...it wasn't like he was fat or anything. Then what was it?
Frowning heavily, the young lion stopped his ponderous steps upon reaching a small kopje. A wide selection of variously-sized rocks littered the grass beneath the mound. His eyes selected one and he pretended it was a gazelle. Pff, at least he could make believe right...GAH, that made him feel like a cub!
Glaring at the rock, the male lowered himself to the ground and waited...for...an opening--
"FORGET IT, this is stupid!" the male shouted suddenly, shoving away from the earth. When he spun around to storm off, he nearly ran right into someone.

Tlotlego'Setu was content. So far, things with his family had been going well and he was starting to feel like he could be at peace once again. He had taken the disbanding of his birth pride harder than some, since he was the type who loved a sense of familiarity. Then again... Change wasn't all that bad, was it? During his trek through the rogue lands, he had met a pawful of interesting beings, though they were interesting for drastically different reasons. And the Pridelands was a beautiful place. Fortune must have been in his favour the day he had found his brother again! He wasn't completely sure where he was going at the moment, though. With practiced expertise he walked with silence to... nowhere in particular. Huh. Maybe he had gotten lost. He worried about that for a moment until he spotted a fellow male among the rocks of a kopje. Curiously, he turned to approach the younger lion. What exactly was he doing? "Whoa... um, what's stupid?" Setu jumped and answered in surprise... just before the adolescent nearly ran right smack into him. Setu cringed away awkwardly, his eyes widened with shock. "W-what are you doing?"

Gulping air from the shock of a near-collision, Jua widened his personal space bubble and adjusted his posture. It was an adult male that he didn't recognize; he knew just about everyone, at least by sight. The Pridelands had changed after the recent war against the hyenas, if only within the spirits of its members. Still, it continued accepting incoming rogues. That added something to the morale of the pride, he was sure, at least for himself personally. It was kind of cool to see new faces. But he was getting sidetracked...
The questions the stranger had asked took a moment to circulate within the adolescent's ears, but he shook himself out of his mild stupor and realized he had probably given this guy the impression that he was either crazy or an absolute moron. Maybe both.
"Oh, uhh...I was, uhh..." the boy blinked, realizing his next string of words were going to sound ridiculous, but they were unavoidable. "...hunting rocks. FOR PRACTICE," he added hastily. "And I mean, I stopped. I didn't actually--...for a second--...so, you're new?"

Setu wasn't exactly the most outgoing lion in the world so he wasn't entirely sure what to do with himself. The expression on his face was similar to that of cornered gazelle; wide eyed and nervous. His solution was to stare at his own paws until he could figure out where he could look without feeling embarrassed.
At least the adolescent seemed to be as awkward as he was in that moment... It brought a bit of guilty comfort to Setu.
"For practice? I suppose that any practice is good..." He muttered kind of uncertainly. Rocks didn't seem to be the best targets, but he supposed they were better than nothing? Setu was kind of confused.
"And yes I am new... Uh, are you new too?" As soon as the question was out of his mouth, he regretted it a bit, but it was too late to take back.

Jua narrowed one of his eyes in some unconscious expression of embarrassment. Yeahhhh, maybe he was right...any practice was good. Well, that made him feel a little bit better, but the thought of being caught while pretending a rock was a preybeast still filled him with something akin to shame. What was he, 2 months old?! He was gonna regret that one for a long time...thank goodness no one else had seen...
If this guy told someone, then--...nahh, he didn't look like much of a talker.
"Oh, no," Jua started, trying to give a friendly smile. This new addition to his half-wincing expression probably didn't get his intentions across quite as clearly as he hoped. "I was born here. Just went through my rite of passage recently." WAIT. Maybe he shouldn't have mentioned that. Now he was going to talk about his screw-ups. Oh MAN. He was a MORON.

Tlotlego'Setu figured the younger lion was trying to be friendly despite the odd expression on his face that was... uhh, well Setu couldn't even begin to describe it. But smiling was a good sign, right? Right?
Setu wondered if his time as a rogue had taught him anything about others after all.
"Rite of passage, huh?" He echoed, without a clue about Jua's regret. "How does that work? I mean, I've heard it mentioned but uh, I don't really know what that is all about." Oh dear, there was something else he would have to learn eventually. Oh well, it kept him busy when he wasn't out hunting.

Oh, GOOD...the new guy was still really new. Maybe if Jua handled his words properly, he'd be able to dance around the incident of his...failure...well, not a complete failure...he...OKAY, it was over, time to move on with his life. But the memory of his little slip-n'-slide lingered despite his violent efforts to suppress it.
"Okay, well, it's, uh..." Jua began, looking upward as he thought of how to compress the explanation to be the easiest possible to understand, while simultaneously avoiding mention of his less-than-smooth first hunt. "When cubs grow to about my age, we go out on our first hunt. So, I just recently did that."
YEAH! There you go. Right there. He danced around his experience. No way it would get brought up now, haha. Oh, yeah. Jua'johari aka Jua the silver tongue.
YEAH.

The older lion watched Jua intently as he spoke, having forgotten his embarrassment from before. There was nothing he liked more than gathering up new information... He always liked to know what was what so he didn't get left behind!
It wasn't a glamorous explanation, but it was enough to satisfy Tlotlego'Setu. It didn't even occur to him that Jua would be trying to hide something. Setu wasn't naive, but he could be a bit too trusting at times.
Setu smiled good-naturedly. "Well, congratulations! How did it go?" He asked innocently. Surely Jua would be excited to tell his tale! What lion didn't feel pride in their first real hunt?

Jua's jaw dropped.
...
HOW IN THE--...
...
OKAY, okay, he could get through this. It was...it could be handled...everything was under control...he could get by with a quick, slurred explanation and then a sudden good-bye. Sure, that'd work. Sure.
WHO WAS HE KIDDING?! The fact that he now had to relate his experience was enough.
"Well, uh...it--...it went mostly good," Jua started off, gaining confidence with every word. YEAH, he could just leave it at that! Maybe? Ugh, no, he couldn't, could he? MAN.
"I kind of..." Man, man, man. "...slipped on some, uhh...mud halfway through, but--...I mean, I fell..." AW NO. "Thhhhree times, but--...the thing died. The gazelle. Yeah, we killed it in the end, so--..."
In that moment, Jua understood what it must've felt like to be an ostrich itching to bury its head under the earth.

Tlotlego'Setu tilted his head to the side. What had gotten Jua so flustered now? But he didn't pull his gaze away. He wanted to hear this grand tale!
.....
Oh dear. It sounded like a grand tale but not the way he expected! He watched with brimming amusement as Jua stumbled all over himself in the effort to cover up what had happen with little success. It was like he couldn't help letting things slip!
When Jua trailed off for the last time (Setu paused longer than usual just to make sure he had finished completely), he started to laugh. He couldn't help it; he felt bad for Jua but it was just too amusing to ignore!
"Ahh nevermind that," Setu said eventually, a huge grin on his face. "Sometimes things happen, you know? It's all part of the experience! You'll do better next time, I'm sure."
Trying to make Jua feel better, he glanced back and forth as if he was checking for eavesdroppers, then lowered his voice. "Anyways, it's better to be honest then to tell some huge lie, isn't it? Most don't tell the entire truth about their first hunts." With that he laughed a bit more, feeling a lot less nervous than he had been before... Even if it was at poor Jua's expense!

The resounding laugh was a gong of doom in Jua's folded ears, but he hid his embarrassment well by fake-laughing along. After a moment, however...surprisingly, his feelings of failure dissipated. The understanding words of the older male made Jua feel much more comfortable about his first real hunting experience, as well as hopeful for his future hunts. How did that even happen...? This guy was kind of...cool.
Feelings of age-related inferiority gone, Jua felt himself grinning lopsidedly at the adult.
"Yeah...I guess so," he said confidently. "I'm Jua'johari. I guess I should've...introduced myself earlier." he said, trailing off almost sheepishly near the end. "Hey," he started suddenly, snapping back. "you want me to show you around a little? I could introduce you to some people."
Yep. Even though he had screwed up during his rites, maybe everything had happened for a reason?

Setu's grin didn't quite vanish while Jua introduced himself. He seemed like a good guy and Setu truly hoped that things would go better for him in the future.
"I'm... Tlotlego'Setu. Feel free to call me Setu, if it's easier," he replied, nodding a little to show that he didn't mind the late introductions. He wasn't much for formalities, either, unless he was meeting someone who demanded it.
Setu jumped a little when Jua started suddenly, but the surprise was quickly forgotten with the suggestion of a tour. Setu looked around once more, wondering how much he had missed just by wandering around.
"That would be.. great actually," he said eventually, nodding once again. "You... are one of the first people I've met. So it might be nice to know more..."
And spending a bit more time with this young lion didn't seem like such a bad idea. It would be great to have some quality company along the way.
