Sahak had wandered far, the storms seeming to chase him for a while. They had let up a few weeks ago, but now he found he missed the company they provided, little as that had been. He now padded along, head low, tail very nearly dragging in the dirt behind him. His step was strong and capable, for he was becoming a very accomplished hunter. It wasn't weakness or laziness that made him droop. For all his life, he'd been surrounded by family and pridal members. To be so alone for him was a depressing and heart-wrenching situation.

Why hadn't he gone with his parents? Or his cousins? Instead he had clung to the lands, the location he was so familiar with. Now he knew the folly of that, but it was too late. There was no tracking down where any of his family had gone. He had never paid attention to what the neighboring prides were, or any of the geography shared by passing rogues. Traveling had never been his thing... until he was forced to it, of course. So now he didn't even know where any pride borders were. He supposed it was only bad luck he hadn't found any yet. Perhaps he would soon? Another feline face would be very welcome just now!

It was another mundane, relaxing day in the Pridelands.

And that suit Fefe just fine, thank you. The heartfelt lioness had her fill of death and crying and war. She'd tussled with two hyenas and left them injured and bloodied. Fefe knew she could land a hard hit, but who knew she had such skill in wounding scraggly dogs!

An expert hunter, Fefe took pride in bringing back kill after kill for her pride. She beamed when those around her could eat, and she loved that she'd put hard work in to make it happen. Now, she was tracking herds and catching scents in the wind.

That was how she'd caught Sahak's smell. Feeling fresh, for it was still early morning and the day was clear and beautiful, she decided to investigate. She had brought in a healthy doe the day prior, and could technically take the day off.

But when she caught sight of him, well . . .

"'ey!" Fefe called out to the figure whose tail seemed motionless and worn. "Yer not looking so good, hm? Everything a'right over there, stranger?" Fefe broke into a jog, carelessly ignoring the idea he might have a nasty temper under all that sad. Eh, she could take him!

As if summoned by his mournful wishing, a voice and a face appeared. He blinked at the grey form moving towards him for a blank moment. Was she real? But quickly he shook his head and mentally rebuked himself. Of course she was real! He wasn't so far gone that he'd start inventing random felines to fill the void! His ears came up as did his tail, which began flipping in sedate excitement. A friendly face at last!

"Yes," he began to answer, but stopped to reconsider his answer. "Well, sort of. I'm not in any trouble." He gave her a sheepish look, a boyish expression left over from his adol days. "I'm just feeling sorry for myself." He debated how much to tell this new stranger, and opted to introduce himself before he explained anything further. "My name is Sahak, and I'm from... well, I suppose I'm a rogue now." His shoulders slumped again, and his tail hit the dirt. He just wasn't used to thinking of himself as a lone lion. It didn't sit well in his stomach, and fitted his personality about as well as a giraffe skin would have fit his body.

"Ahmmm," Fefe consoled as she neared him. "Those are some serious troubles, those are."

Tail swaying, Fefe's smile appeared undetered by Sahak's dour spirits. There was a small click from the roof of her mouth as his tail reached the earth.

"Eh, well, you can call me Fefe." Everyone else did, and the grey lioness saw no reason to invent something new. What would a stranger do with her name? There was no ill in it.

"You're a rogue, hm? You and a huge lot out there. Well, you're in luck. You stumbled right into the friendliest pride this side of the ocean." Fefe had never been to the ocean, but she'd heard about it, and that was plenty. She knew which direction it was and that you could sniff it out when you got close.

"You don't seem too happy 'bout being a rogue, though." Maybe he was one of those swampies on pilgrimage? Seemed a bit old, though.

Her cheerful manner was having a clear affect on him. Somehow it put him at ease, and reminded him of the light-hearted banter of his family, when they'd been all together. He smiled at her in a bemused manner, savoring the friendly face. "Truthfully, I am not cut out to be a rogue at all, I'm afraid." He was the honest sort, and had not been taught to hide or mask his failings. "I am used to pride life, to being surrounded by family, to laughter and love and support." His voice took on a lilting, mournful tinge towards the end, but he didn't slump and sigh this time.

He returned his far-off eyes to her once more. "Thank you for the welcome, Fefe, but... what pride is this?" His red eyes peered at her curiously and with a good deal of amusement that she'd not told him exactly where he was or what pride she was part of. He had to admit, hearing that it was a friendly pride gave him pause in his search for his family. It was woefully obvious he wasn't likely to find them in this manner. While he chatted with the pleasant lioness, a small part of his mind was considering the idea of giving up his original goal and choosing to remain.

His admittance received a long, deep chuckle from Fefe. "Eh, it's lonely business, that." Being a rogue definitely wasn't her life, no-sir.

"This'd be the Pridelands." The grey female was bursting with pride as she said it, chest puffed out and muzzle held straight. "If you want family and laughter, you're going to find it in abundance here."

All wariness of the stranger had completely vanished by now, and Fefe took a brief look behind her to concrete her next idea. "Why don't you come join us for a few days? Get that belly full, y'know. It'll help that mind o' yours t'have some good company."

Pridelands?! Everyone had heard of that pride. It was large, well-established, strong. Not without conflict, but with the numbers and unity to meet threats head-on. Her perspective on the pride was also an eye-opener. It was similar to how most had felt about his previous pride, but without the mysteriousness and hiding. Of course, right now he'd give anything for the cool, masking mists that he had grown up with. Out here, the dry heat was brutal. She looked back before asking him to stay, and he raised his eyes to look beyond her, to the lands of the great Pridelands.

He hesitated for a few moments, almost visibly swaying on his feet as he debated internally. In the end, he convinced himself it was just for a few days. Perhaps he'd learn more about the prides nearby, and perhaps get a clue on where his parents had gone. If not... well, her opinion on the pride certainly painted a pretty picture. "Family, huh?" he answered her finally, looking torn between skepticism and longing. Having his belly full without so much work also sounded appealing. He swayed once more, then turned a smile to her.

"Alright, but just for a few days," he cautioned her. "I don't know if I can stay. I've come a long way, and may have a long way to go yet." She was kind and friendly enough, and certainly lovely enough to be enticement unto herself, but there were bigger things on his mind. This... this could be a welcome break from those bigger things, though.
