So, I was hanging out in this thread and they were talking about how the guilds are dead.

Do you believe it to be true or false? Will our guild fall into a black void?
What do you think we, as a guild, could do to prevent this from happening?

Your thoughts please.

I think it is harder now for a newbie to strike out on his or her own and find an active guild where they can find a group of friends.

I'm technically a part of 7 guilds, but I've only ever been a "regular" in 4, and three of those 4 are nowhere close to being as active as they used to be. I really only count Pollvolution as the guild I'm a part of because of you guys.

I don't think all guilds are dead, and I don't think that our guild will fall into a black void, but I do think it's a harder job for us to attract and keep newer members. I think part of it's because there's no real solid way of subscribing to a guild thread. Notifications aren't all that reliable, and forum threads are more approachable.

Start inviting people more? Also, for us specifically, our main problem is that we are a very old group. We know each other well, and can probably come off as a bit of a clique, even if we really are very happy for new faces. The familiarity in a group of people can be very intimidating, so people tend to leave.

Also, our guild doesn't really do much besides post, ever. We could stand to have, say, a weekly contest, or something. I'd drink donate to that, gladly.

And, then, we have...what are we about as a guild? The Revolution ended, we won. But now what? When people see that, do they think of us as a group of people rebelling against something? If so, how weird is it to see us and realize the revolution ws fought three years ago, and won already?

What is our charter? Why are we a guild they want to join? What makes us special?

I am only on this damn website anymore because you people keep me inspired, and you keep me entertained, and you're just a group of good folk. But not everyone knows you all like that, and not everyone has that respect built up already for all of us. We need to make ourselves appealing to newer people.

Does GAIA still have that bar that tells you about new accounts? If so, start mass invites maybe. Just tell them in the message that we try to reach out and help new GAIAns get off the ground, with a community, and weekly contests, etc. Tha twas very appealing to me and all of my friends when we were new, I'm sure it still is now.

The internet is an ever-changing world, full of ever-changing places. Those who let themselves stand still for too long will be overtaken by the tidal forces all around us.

The downfall of guilds is everyone forgetting where their roots are. They look down at newbies while ignoring that newbies make guilds work.

I think the guild could be revved up if we reached out to new Gaia members. Not all will jump on board, but those who seek a place to grow will greatly appreciate the offer.

If we invite every new personthat ill come, and only 1/50 stays? Well, that's more than 0. Also, doing stuff in Towns together, or zOMG! is a great way to get members, from what I've heard/seen.

Best is to keep inviting people who actually post more and even start throwing out members who havent posted in ages. Better to be in an active guild with active members then in one thats active with more dead members then active.

In my opinion the guild's been dead. The only topics I can get a discussion in are controversial ones and when I do people either think I am trying to start drama or be an a** which I am neither.

I have attempted to make conversation and the only conclusion I Have come to is to get more people who are interested in topics we post. Or... More regs, which at this point seems impossible.

I've known everyone in this guild for years of my life and I only know like... One or two facts about everyone. That's saying a lot. Don't misinterpret what I am trying to say. I enjoy everyone's company. I like everyone here. Just always thought the guild needed more conversation and feels odd when I post so much at 0 to 5 replies, mostly lower around 1 nearly every thread. Goes for just about everyone, but you can't really chime in on a topic you have no real interest in... Thus, need to find people with more varied tastes.

Honestly we are as close as it gets to a "real" guild. We aren't just a topic or RP or fanclub and we do have conversations. We just need more of them. I have been thinking about this for a while.

You know, I think that thread has a few good points. Guilds, as a whole, from what I've noticed, are slipping further and further away. It's been quite a bit since the last big revamp, correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have the best of memory when it comes to Gaia. It's just harder to find people who want to be in guilds. Forums ARE more appealing, as they're larger and have more people to converse with, typically. I'm sad to say that this guild IS the most active of the ones I'm currently in. And that's not a good thing, as we're really only semi-active, it seems..
Now, back off that tangent a bit. You ask if the guild will fall into a black void? I certainly hope not. If it does, I wouldn't have a reason to even come to Gaia anymore, honestly. I mean, yeah, it got slow awhile back. REALLY slow. But, even then, there was still a few posts.. Now, it seems we're starting to post some more.. Even if its not exactly discussing stuff much.. I mean, look at the first page of the main forum. There's only one thread, omitting the stickies, that's made it to more than one page.. ..I'm not sure exactly what my point is, but I thought we usually do more.. That's not intended to point fingers at ANYONE, because I understand, life gets busy. I'm guilty myself of not posting much.. >>;

Now, I've walked away a few times while typing this, so I lost many of my points. But whatever. I do agree that we would do better with more users posting, but I'm not sure how to get them. I mean we do seem to have a rather specific target base... Semi-lit posters, and who don't mind not having that much of a focused topic.. I'm not sure why, but that just seems to turn people away..
Hm. If Crys. weren't down at the moment, I'd be severely tempted to try and drag some of my friends from there back over to Gaia, even just to contemplate joining here. But, it's currently being reworked, so I cannot..

Roland-- O.o? You don't get the splashscreen when going to the site?
Pixel's taken it down for a bit so he can overhaul the inventories to try and kill the bug that's eating items.. or spitting out random things in peoples inventories, as the case may be.
Supposedly, you can "Check back in about 25 minutes to see if we're back up!"... but they're not. xD

Oh, okay. Well, no, since last night, I have been completely unable to post, send tickets, or post a message to anyone except via the long way, through my messages and typing in their name

O.o? That's strange.. I was able to post no problem last night.. And, obviously, people were posting late into the night, as an announcement that came out.. ~2 in the morning, my time, had pages of replies.. So that's strange..

Zephy will be in charge of a weekly contest.
But, what if we all switched off months? That way, Zephy won't get burned out of hosting a contest.
IE, One person hosts 4 contests for one month, then another person hosts four a month, then another person. That way, we all have a shot.

I like Toon's idea of inviting people that are new to gaia.

While I dislike the idea of kicking the inactive members out, Loki has a point.

Ivy, the only thing that I can think of to attempt to get a notification thingy is to just quote everyone..... sweatdrop

Quoting really is a good diea. People have gotten lazy with checking things now, with the notifications up. I still check religiously, but not everyone can do that anymore.

I'm fine with switching off with people. We could even just have me and then a guest host every month, and we'll each host two of the contests.

Cherry-- Slightly related to the "tossing out"; if you'd like, I can pm you a list of my mules, and you can remove them.. That would cut down quite a few members. >>;
