Stuff happens and I know many of you have had your own personal challenges to face. So I guess what I'm interested in is how you little bunnies keep the mental strength to keep going when it all messes up.

Basically what do when the going gets tough?

Prompted by lots of music (so much of my music seems to have a theme of perseverance!) and my continuing personal quest to improve (because I fail rather spectacularly in this area).

Well it varies depending on the exact circumstances but to be perfectly honest my coping mechanisms are those that are classed as more "social norm" but not seen as an appropriate or useful method, ie drinking away your sorrows. That and comfort eating contribute to why I'm the size of a house... ninja

It commonly depend on how interested I'm in trying to get trough whatever is going on.
If I got 'nough interest, I'll stubbornly continue pushing myself trough 'till it's either done with, or I give up.
Alternatively: Silent rage quit. Followed by me doing something else for a while. User Image

I don't really drink but I can totally relate with overdosing on junk food!

You've accomplished quite a bit so far in your academic career Peo and your dreams for the future are big. I think you have more mental strength and tactics to keep it then you may be aware of XD

It's just teasing out those methods you use, for example do you use a reward system (eg. If I get A done then I can do B) or have people you check in with to keep you accountable? There are many thing people use it's just discovering them.

---o0o---

Well Gakre lets say you're highly interested in achieving/completing/beating/surpassing B how do you 'stubbornly continue pushing' ? Is there like key quotes you use to inspire or something like visualising the goal?

---o0o---

Thanks for the replies guys. I really appreciate it smile

"To live is to suffer. To survive is to find meaning in the suffering."

That quote has actually helped me a few times. I think of something bad that has happened and find what I gained from it. So whenever I deal with something new, I know that eventually I'll find the good in it.

A reward system doesn't work that well with me. If my interest of B is greater than my interest of A, I may just postpone A for later.
Which is probably why I'm not doing too well at school. User Image

I tried the reward system and it does't work to well mainly because I have severe spending problems and I reward myself whether I achieve or not.

I suppose my rewards come from simply accomplishing a set task. If I achieve what I set out to do, I feel good because I've actually managed to do things.

There is also the ignore and deny tactic. If I ignore it and deny it is happening then it will eventually go away ninja

Great quote and meaning behind it Shori. It's always a good idea to look on the bright side of things even if it can be a bit tough.
Thanks for sharing ^^

---o0o---

Hummm then how do you cultivate your interest so you stick with something Gakre?

---o0o---

Oh gosh Peo I'm like the exact same with avoidance and rewards XD

Mind you I've not really thought of the actual achieving of a task to be a reward before...

That's a problem. User Image

For me, its a mix of things. When things get bad, I force myself to acknowledge that yeah, this sucks. Majorly. But things'll get better in time, and sitting around doing nothing will do nothing to improve things. I tackle it as it comes along, knowing that eventually, it'll stop sucking so much.

Its a tough pill to swallow, especially when there's been those really tough days where I just want to go back to bed and huddle under the covers and pretend like the world and all its problems and unfairness doesn't exist for just a little while longer. Heaven knows there's been those days. But sometimes you just got to keep moving forward.

Music is a big destresser for me as well. I enjoy just taking a break when things get really crazy, and going for a walk with my headphones in. I live in a quiet area. Its not really developed that much, so its a nice change of pace to just lose yourself in the scenery for a while.

It depends with me a bit too, though the problems aren't like the worst things that one can go through.
My main factor though is probably how I get anxious and/or depressed for a certain amount of time... Like I'd be too anxious to go somewhere and I've successfully a few times convinced myself to go and overcame the thought of fear for the most part by just telling myself wherever I'm going will only last for a short amount of time and the fact that it "has" to be done at that time since I can't just tell myself to do it at a later time. If that makes somewhat sense. Though at times where I literally can't get myself to do things or just get up for them then I'd get upset to the point where I'd cry a few times while thoughts race in my head and there's a strong force in myself that has me to not do them. Can't explain it too well, but it's really how it gets... To make myself feel better from being upset though is probably either cry it out and listen to some music or just try to sleep so I can just get out of it.
Depressed part would have me end up having thoughts of suicide and that I likely should do it even if it's out of choice. What gets me out of that which explains a bit why I'm still here is probably because I know there's people that want me here (parents, relatives) and I don't want to have whatever could happen if I end up doing it since it's going to make them suffer even if they don't know that I get this way sometimes.:/ That's probably linked to my anxiety and the reasons why I have it that led me this way, but I know in the end I want to live.

Well Gakre that's what I'm looking to improve for myself through others suggestions so if you stick around you might pick up something helpful too ^^

---o0o---

Hiding under the covers... yup totally know that feeling XD

Actually I find music can be a double edged sword and some of the music I love most has the horribly bad consequence of drowning me deeper in despair. What music do you tend to listen to to help improve your mood Astral?

---o0o---

Actually Nikki the experiences you're talking about are similar to my own and the reason I started this in the first place. I'm trying to find a way to meet these things head on so I don't get pulled into the avoidance and depressive cycle. But we haven't killed ourselves so that's got to count for something XD Also if you ever need to talk to someone then you're welcome to contact me : )

One or more of the following:

- sleep
- cry
- hide from it all
- clean (only my area. If I'm mad at other peoples, why would I actually go and clean their stuff? Also, if I go near other people's stuff when I'm mad, it'll probably end up broken and me feeling guilty)

What I should do instead:
run
