There had been a note:
"Sorry mini-me, this was the shortest coat I could find."
For a few moments after reading this, Gale had been rather nonplussed, staring at both it, and the coat that it had come attached to, with a rather suspicious expression on his face. He wasn't sure whether or not Caelius had actually approved it, but it seemed...
...the coat was too big.
A week later, after finally having gotten the bloody thing trimmed down to the correct size, Gale stood in front of the mirror on the back of his bedroom door, silently tugging at the sleeves. They felt stiff and new, as did the rest of the coat, which was somewhat more ornate than the last one, gold embroidery lining the hem.
It was strange, so very strange. Gale had not talked to anyone since returning from the mission, not even to the ones that had accompanied him. He had desperately wanted to see Eva most of all, but had refrained, wanting to give them all space to recuperate.
It had not been an easy mission, after all. And sometimes the echoes of the words that had been yelled drifted through his mind, reminding him of everything that had happened, reminding him of the anger, the hurt, the frustration, the betrayal -
But it was over now. It was all over, and he had been...promoted. He was no longer a trainee, but a full-fledged hunter.
Strange.
Still looking at himself, Gale smoothed down the front of his coat, buttoning up the buttons and straightening the hem until it was perfectly aligned.
Well, Jinhai? How do I look?
<< ...like a brat. >>
A small smile tugged at Gale's lips.
"Good to know some things don't change."

He had news. Well news and a question. Two things. He wanted to for one thing, tell Gale he’d done it. Popped the question and gotten a yes. He was engaged and had gotten married. And… He wanted to Ask Gale if he would do him the honor of being one of his groomsmen. Gale was someone Marcus had known from the beginning, and he was also one of the people Marcus trusted completely.
Younger or not, the death hunter was someone Marcus wanted to be by his side, both as a fighter, and as a friend.
Knocking on the door, the moon trainee hesitated before calling out, “Hey Gale, you in? I wanted to talk to you.” A pause. “And not about feelings.”

There was a knock on the door - surprising, since Gale was not expecting anyone at that particular moment, and he had spent the past week ensconced in his room, away from the rest of the world - and his friends. Though, now that he thought about it, he supposed he should have expected that eventually someone would wonder where he was.
...well, maybe.
A familiar voice floated through the closed down and Gale lowered his arms slowly, idly tugging at the cuff of his coat. He had not seen Marcus in quite some time, but the man was his friend, despite the age difference - a good friend - and he could not stay shut up in his room brooding for much longer.
And at least he didn't want to talk about feelings.
Gale glanced in the mirror one last time before moving away, towards the door. He reached out a gloved hand, turned the knob, and pulled it open, taking an automatic step backwards, the new coat falling stiffly into place.
"Hey, Marcus."

As the door opened, Marcus was smiling, but the smile went quickly to mild confusion as he noticed what was on Gale. It was a hunter coat only... It was a hunter coat. The embellishments far above what the trainees were allowed. Staring at him, he entered the room, face turning from confusion to a vaguely upset shift.
"You didn't tell me?" The upset look was removed as quickly as it came banished with a grin. "My stuff can wait, because, am I seeing things right?" His grin widened. "Everyone sees you as a kid my a** Gale. You're a ******** hunter."
Hopefully, it wouldn't go into a talk about feelings. Hopefully.

The range of emotions that flickered across Marcus' face were actually rather interesting, Gale thought to himself, as he let his hand fall from the doorknob, folding his arms self consciously across his chest.
"I didn't tell anybody," he replied, flushing a little, his cheeks dusting a pale red as he stepped away from the doorway to let Marcus into the room. "I didn't really...know it was going to happen until after the fact, anyway," he added, as he took a seat at his desk.
"Besides," said Gale, with a slight roll of his eyes. "My Division Leader is a man with a permanent stick up his arse. You know how Caelius is. Promoting a trainee to full hunter - or rather, promoting anyone for anything is like telling him he needs to go shave his head."
Despite this, Gale was somewhat pleased by the praise anyway, and his face felt warmer than it should have as he rested his chin in the palm of his hand, turning away embarrasedly from his friend.
"Hey, Marcus," he said, though he was facing the wall.
"I'm a hunter now."

He didn't- well technically telling or not was his business, he was the first of them to be promoted and just... Gale. The youngest, yet to one who was above them. Who was more mature than half of them. Calm, collected... and incredible kind Gale was a full hunter now. Marcus wouldn't believe it for anyone but Gale. He out of all of them, deserved it.
Sitting across from Gale on his bed, Marcus stared at gale, thoughtful as he told him about Caelius. As he turned away Marcus couldn't help it. He got up and though he was sitting, Marcus still wrapped his arms around the hunter for a hug.
"Congrats Gale!" He laughed, resisting the urge to pick him up and hug him more, allowing the shorted hunter his seat as Marcus kept his grip. "I told you you could do it!"

"And, not to mention - what are you doing - "
There was an indignant squawk that escaped Gale's lips, arms suddenly wrapping around him, Marcus' laughter filling his ears. Squirming, Gale pushed him away, his face flaming, and straightened his coat.
"Stop that," he grumbled, but the corners of his lips were twitching, as though he were trying to hide a smile. "I'm just glad it's finally all over and done with."
And that a few demons were finally put to rest.
Turning around, Gale pushed his bangs away from his face and said, "But enough about me right now; what did you want to talk to me about?"

He was hugging you Gale.
DEAL WITH IT.
The hug over, Marcus's grin never left, even as the hunter huffed and blushed. "Fair enough." Eyes went back to the detail, "It suits you. Maybe one day I'll see an even more fancy coat on you." Marcus wouldn't put it past Gale to one day make assistant, or if the a** in office ever died, the lead of the division.
Gale's promotion turned back to why Marcus had come in the first place, got a softer smile. "I asked her to marry me Gale." Excitement drained, leaving behind a certain contentment. "We're going to tie the knot in about a month and..." a deep breath, "I was wondering if you'd do me the honor of being one of my groomsmen."

He did not want to deal with it, thank you very much.
"Yeah, well..." Gale mumbled, now thoroughly embarrassed, his hand partially covering his mouth as he suddenly found the wall very interesting. He pushed aside his fringe of blonde hair and blew out his breath, closing his eyes briefly.
"...I asked her to marry me, Gale."
His head jerked around abruptly, almost giving himself whiplash. "You..." Gale started to say, then trailed off as Marcus finished speaking. His face, which he hadn't thought could be as red as it was, now turned even redder, his mouth falling open.
He snapped it shut again, attempting to look dignified and not like a gawping idiot.
There was a small pause.
"...we are talking about Cass here, right?"

Laughing Marcus nodded. "Of course I asked Cass, who did you think I asked? Bix? Come on, give me some credit here." The red on Gale's face was darker then Marcus's pink.
"At the last mission from hell we kind of... promised each other we'd do it. Sort of drove home the whole fact we're going to die sooner rather than later soooo..." He trailed off, rubbing his arm.
"Yeah. I was..kind of hoping you'd be one of the guys up there with me. Not that you have to but... You're one of the guys I trust with my life, and you're my friend. A damn good one at that."

"Okay, okay, just making sure," said Gale, waving a hand. "You never know around here - and, well, it's Bix, he's one of your best mates, I would be happy for you, but I wouldn't have expected it, but I'm glad to hear that you're staying with Cass. I er...well, I still don't know her that well," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck uncertainly. "but she seems pretty nice and you obviously love her enough to get married."
A small twinge of jealousy went through him at the thought; Marcus, getting married? It seemed like just yesterday that he had met the dark-haired trainee, just a short time ago that they were sparring out on the grounds of Deus Ex.
But so much had happened since then. Everything had changed now.
"I..." Gale started, then stopped, his face crimson. Even if he'd considered the possibility of Marcus getting married, he'd never once considered the idea of actually being involved in the wedding, let alone be one of the groomsmen. It was sort of mind-boggling, but at the same time...rather nice.
Gale cleared his throat awkwardly, staring at the wall.
"That is...I'd be honored to."

Snorting, Marcus couldn't even imagine him and a guy, let alone Bix. "She's... she's everything Gale. Even if we end up.. short lived.. I want to spend it with her you know?" Maybe Gale didn't, but Marcus was still on cloud nine for the fact she said yes.
It never occurred to Marcus that Gale might be jealous, Marcus was just very.. cloud nine.
"A year since we started and...You're a hunter. I'm getting married. Hell, we're still alive." They had been to hell and back...and were probably still set for another visit sometime soon.
As Gale accepted the roll, Marcus reached out give his shoulder a shake. "Thanks. It's in a month so.. just need a tux for a day really. We're trying to keep it rather traditional and formal. I even managed to get us a church!"

Gale couldn't resist rolling his eyes. Marcus was so head over heels for Cass that it was a little nauseatingly sweet - but he let him go on about her for several minutes anyway, waiting until he was finished to say anything.
"A year, huh?" he said, glancing out the cracked window of his former dorm room. He had only come back here now to see if he could gather up some of the things he had left here and see if they were still worth salvaging, considering the state of the dorms.
Has it really been a year already?
Gale turned his head back to Marcus, still resting it against the palm of his hand as he exhaled slowly. "A year moves by faster than I thought," he murmured, and shook his head, just slightly. "But Marcus..."
His eyes flickered up to meet the older hunters, and it was surprisingly steady, surprisingly clear and his cheeks were no longer red.
"Thanks for being my friend all this time."

He was head over heels for her and then some. He never could have seen himself like this a year after waking from the pods. He would have guessed himself alone and as self invested as ever, hardly thinking about things like love and if he'd be able to get a house.
One year, and everyone had changed, mostly in Marcus's opinion, for the better.
As Gale thanked him for being a friend, it was hard to not just go over and hug the hell out of him and laugh. But, the guy had gotten his hugs out, all there was left to do was smile and nod. "A year isn't long enough Gale, I'm aiming for a hell of a long time. Till one of us ends up going on a more permanent type mission you know?" He reached out, a smirk on his face. "You don't have to thank me for being a friend, because I intent to stay one. Saying thanks is like you're ending it as if it was a bad relationship, and in my defense, I am not THAT bad."

"I don't know," Gale replied, with a completely deadpan expression. "I seem to remember kicking my arse several times in spars, that time where you decided to mentor me in love and proceeded to text Eva about it, and then there was the whole underage drinking thing..."
A smirk had crossed Gale's face as he idly pushed aside a few of his bangs. They were getting long again; he'd have to cut them soon so that they weren't getting into his eyes, obscuring his vision.
He looked out the window again.
"Nah," said Gale. "I thank you because it means something to me that you're my friend, not that I want to end it."
