Virgilia took a small bite out of the apple she held in her dainty paws. She chewed the precise amount before swallowing, basking in the glow of the sun. Such a fair day.
To her left, the bushes rustled slightly, and a pokemon emerged.

Gangrel emerged from the grass, looking around. He was sure he had seen something earlier... There! It was a buneary, and she had already noticed him. Perfect.
[You. Are you up for a fight?]

Gangrel cocked his head. [Haaaaaaaaah? Look, lady, I don't know about this "ojou" business, but you don't need a reason for fighting. Fighting is it's own reason. Now are you fighting me or what?]

Gangrel hung his head dejectedly. There was no fun in beating up someone with no will to fight back. Instead, he walked over to the buneary. [Fine. No battle. I'm bored, though. Talk with me.]

Gangrel looked at the buneary strangely. [What, you mean you've never left? I suppose it would explain your... disposition.] He said the last word like it was filthy. [I'm not exactly the best pokemon to talk about the outside world with, though. I was born in captivity. It's better now, but still.]

Virgilia's ears perked up as she rolled herself into a laying position in front of him, interested. "Truly? What was it like? How did it 'get better'?"

Gangrel laughed inwardly. Although the buneary put on a high and mighty act, she was still just a child after all. He wasn't much older, though. [Well, let's see. There is this group of humans that call themselves 'Team Rocket'. They are cruel and vicious, and all I had ever known of humans. They beat me when I didn't live up to expectations. Apparently, they are even hated by most other humans, too.]

Virgilia was enraptured by the story, resting her head on her paws as she kicked absentmindedly at the air. "But you said it got better! Did they all get beaten up? What happened? Come on, come on!"

Gangrel closed his eyes. [No, they are all still fine. What happened was that someone else joined Team Rocket.] Gangrel slowly opened his eyes as he continued. [His name was Walpurgis Night, he was stupid - didn't understand anything about Team Rocket. He just didn't fit in at all. He was nice, for one. He gave me cheese, and treated me nicely, and I repayed him by biting him like anyone else. But he never got upset at me, just continued to smile and visit me day after day.]
Gangrel closed his eyes at the memory again. [It was weird, you know? I had never done anything to deserve it, but he kept coming back. I wouldn't have blamed him if he just left. But he didn't, even when he probably should have. Eventually, I was assigned to him - no one else wanted anything to do with me. And he just kept treating me nicely.] Gangrel paused again. [He's my best friend, and I'd do anything for him.]

Virgilia's eyes were sparkling as Gangrel finished the story. "That's so cool! It's like he was a knight in shining armor that saved you from the evil forces of darkness like in the old stories my mom used to tell me!"

Virgilia blushed so deeply her ears turned red. "Ah! That's- Um, uh! I mean! Sh- shut up!" She shot to her feet and averted her eyes. "It's not as if I was interested in your story or anything! Don't get any stupid ideas!"
With that, she turned and stormed off, leaving Gangrel to wonder what the hell had just transpired.
