Not sure if I've ever mentioned this...hard to believe that I wouldn't. It would appear to me, that Aida... has nightmares. confused
Not only does she have nightmares, but, she has them fairly often.
I recognize the noise she makes as crying, she made the same noise when she burned her lip before she got her pain meds. It's a heartbreaking sound. However when I check on her, she seems to be out cold. After I nudge her and wake her up. Giver her a kiss and a pet and tell her she's okay. It stops.
Last night was the worst one yet. She wasn't waking up, I thought she was dying. When I picked her up she woke up all startled. And was perfectly fine afterwards.
Has anyone heard of this, or have had animals that had a nightmare?
Of course in my mind I imagine she's dreaming of her sister Hope when she died. Hard to imagine what a rat might dream about. And why does this happen so often?

Texas ASPCA recently had a post where they described what they referred to as PTSD in two mares they had confiscated from a property where there had been a stallion killed, the people had him mere feet from the mare pasture and slit his throat and then butchered him with a chainsaw. The mares were spotted with cast off blood splatter from his butchering. I'll have to see if I can find that.

Yeah, horrible really, they said they described the behavior of the mares that had witnessed the attack [for lack of a better word] to a psychologist and he said in humans that would be classified as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Though living in groups in the wild, perhaps it's the stress of her sister "Vanishing" suddenly more than the accident. I mean she wasn't alone long before you got Blaze, but she was alone. Also, while tending to Hope, I'm sure Aida was in the cage and not there to witness the actual death, the fall I don't think would have been traumatic for her since rats fall quite frequently.

Aida was in my sweater when hope died just inches away. Out of sight, but animals smell fear. She was in my sweater while myself and my parents cried. She acted differently after that night and I dunno if it's just cause she was lonely but she got a lot snugglier. I kept her in my sweater as much as possible so she wasn't alone. I remember thinking she was depressed

I had a mouse that would chatter in her sleep all night long.
