Teepee As per usual, Bernard was lost and had no-one to blame but himself. He could have sworn that this direction was heading west, but now he wasn't so sure. Which way were you supposed to face the sun to determine west from east? Or better yet, north from south? "Confound it!" the stallion whined, kicking at the ground as he walked. He was not feeling good, not with the temperature rising and his delusional directional skills leading him away from the shade and water he most needed.
Agh, why hadn't he just stuck to the river?
Oh. Right. He was afraid that Dendro fellow would have found and bugged him again. In retrospect that was a stupid thought, but then Bernard was beginning to believe everything he did was stupid. And now he was going to die. His lips were cracked, his tail kept slapping away the insects thirsty for his blood, and his head was beginning to feel heavy. The endless plains stretched before him like some cruel joke, and like an idiot he kept plodding forward, because if he stopped now he was sure he'd never move again.
And then Bernard saw it. A glint of blue. A ribbon more like. It curved from right to left and - oh by the spirits, trees! The forest was not far!
And thus was how on that particular afternoon several birds had to pause in their song and scatter as a hulking mass of purple chaotically launched itself into the trees and all but collapsed into the river, punctuated by laughter so relieved it almost sounded maniacal.

Caitlin's day had been a boring one. She'd wandered off in search of excitement or someone to play with. The manipulative mare had found no one and it was SO hot. She'd found cooling shade and a pleasant river, though she knew the woods here to be somewhat dangerous to careless adventurers. She knew them well enough though and was silent as she slipped to the river and began to drink of the cool, fresh water.
The mare stared blankly at the stallion, clearly oblivious to her presence. She rose her head from the river, too shocked and intrigued to continue her drink. What a stupid creature, she thought as she edged closer to get a better look. She was on the other side of the river from him, though off to one side. "Do you plan on alerting every creature in a five mile radius to your presence?" she called, sneering at him. Would serve him right if some hungry creature or other found him. He'd sure enough be easy prey. She swished her tail irritably, looking around cautiously. These woods WERE known to house wolves, after all.

Out of breath as he was from the stampeding, it took Bernard a few moments to notice he was being talked to, and then another extra few to figure out what to say. Her voice had startled him, and his gasp made him inhale a bit more water than needed. There was that awkward moment in which he nearly choked as he staggered around back on his hooves, sloshing more water around until at last he was properly upright and less likely to die from his excitement at finding this haven.
"I-I, uh . . . no?" Bernard sputtered at last, ears tilted back. "It just happens like that. I-I didn't mean . . . I was just so happy to find water and shade because I was going to die out there."
And now he was probably going to die in here instead because he was so noisy. The stallion's head fell dejectedly. "Sorry, madam."

She cocked her head at him curiously, her face twisted in a sardonic smirk. "Madam? How formal." Her voice had a biting edge, an underlying mockery. She paused a moment to listen carefully, remaining stock-still. She heard small animals frittering about in the bushes, birds chirping in in the lower branches of the trees. There seemed no immediate signs of danger. Her desire for amusement had her moving closer to the stallion. "Where did you come from, anyway? And how stupid are you to have gotten yourself in such dire trouble out in this heat?"

Bernard flinched at her sharp words but dared not retort back about it. Clearly she was a mare of class given her state of clothes and mane, and if he showed an ounce of disrespect he was sure the punishment would put him in his place - and Bernard quite disliked his tired state enough to not risk it, much as he wanted to point out that he had only meant it as a formality and was not something to sneer at.
. . . Oh who was he kidding? He was something to be looked down upon.
"I was lost, mad- miss," he corrected himself, hoping that switching to something a bit less snooty sounding might be more appealing to the stranger. "The plains all looked the same, and after a while with the sun bearing down I just . . . got excited at the sight of water and shade." Enough to stomp his way to it at least; he looked sheepish after the fact. "I, um, came from a herd from the far west in search of good deeds to spread."
Which reminded him: how many of those had he accomplished? Zilch. Awesome.
Bernard tilted his ears back, looking a little apprehensive to ask. "Ah . . . I-If you pardon my asking, what is a mare like yourself doing alone?"

Good deeds? That caught the mare off guard a bit, but her seemingly-sweet smile masked it. The cogs in her wicked mind were turning already, forming a plan on how best to manipulate and use this stallion for her own amusement. She relaxed her muscles and continued to smile, looking by all rights to be kind and gentle. Even her voice which was dripping with mockery and menace before became sweet. almost childlike in its innocence. "Forgive my rudeness. I believe I, too was a victim of the heat." She batted her eyelashes at him coyly. "What herd is it you come from? And pray tell me you name? I'm Caitlin."

"No no no not at all, miss - Miss Caitlin," Bernard hastened to say, her picturesque appearance easily fooling him. "After all, the heat could make anyone a menace - even a mare with class like yourself." He cleared his throat and tried to salvage some dignity from his sloppy entrance by bowing his head politely, hoping his mane didn't look terribly unbecoming now that it was plastered to his head.
"Bernard, at your service. I, ah, come from the Steelhoof Herd, though it's a ways away from here." He tried to toss his head a bit to peel his mane away, but it did little good. "And I'm sorry to say it, but . . . I'm a little lost. Do you know the lands around here very well?" Bernard noted that she didn't answer his question about what she was doing, but perhaps the lady was withholding that information for a reason . . .Fatal Irony OTL so sorry for lateness, a shop meta overwhelmed me

Ol-j-man No worries on lateness. I get caught up with stuff too! She moved forward, gracefully circling the stallion, sizing him up in her mind. "Why have you wandered so far away?" She continued with her innocent act, her eyes wide with what appeared to be wonder. "I know this area well, but it is crawling with many dangers!" She glanced around suddenly, as if she were nervous of a wolf jumping out and eating her right there. She looked back to Bernard pleadingly. "Perhaps if I direct you back to your herd you would be so kind as to escort me somewhere safe?" She batter her eyelashes again, moving closer to him, almost brushing against him.

Bernard ate up her act like a hungry creature at a feast. His posture changed in seconds, from one apologetic to one more determined to protect: straightened, dignified, the shadow of a stallion that had once had the guts to believe he could be a true knight. "Is it? Well now I can't possibly leave you on you own, Miss Caitlin," he said as a matter of factly. "My herd is leagues from here and shouldn't be part of your concern, but we do raise our own to be most courteous. I would be honored to escort you to safety." And he punctuated the statement with a deep bow of his head.
It had been a long, long time since he had been given purpose. It was innervating to say the least. Bernard had to work not to grin like a buffoon as he raised his head, even moreso when she brushed against him.
"I don't, er, know the layout of the land so well. But I did pass by some heavily wooded areas on the way here, past the sea of grass. Would that make you comfortable? Or does the mountainous terrain suit you better?" He was eager to please.

Ol-j-man Sorry again for lateness! Caitlin grinned at the change in the stallion. This was too easy. Almost pathetically easy. She felt herself becoming bored already. As he dipped his head she had a flash of desire to snap his neck while he was vulnerable, but thought better of it. She'd never been a killer before and resolved to keep her hooves clean if she could help it.
"You don't know the layout of the land?" The sarcastic reply slipped out before she realized it, but transitioned seamlessly into her sweet act once more. "My darling however did you get here, then? By accident? Or was it..." she moved closer, whispering the last word in his ear seductively, "fate?" She let her warm breath tease his cheek and ear for a moment before pulling away, turning and walking back the way she'd come. "I believe you were meant to happen by me, my darling. Now, I would like you to find me a nice field of flowers to sun myself in." She didn't even look back to see if he was following her.
