THETA CLUTCH HATCHING

It was early morning, just after sunrise, as people began their day when the dragons began to hum. The buzzing spread from Brakiath and crashed over the rest of the Weyr.

The Candidatemaster leaped into action, summoning all the potential riders to the Sands and the racks with the robes. Coming from one chore or another, covered in grit or suds or still mussed with bed hair, the Candidates were formed into lines and the rules of the Hatching shouted out repeatedly. Each should know their place - the boys to the left, the girls to the right stanking in rank and file.

It was a small clutch, yes, but it was no less important. They needed all the dragons they could muster to face the Thread and preserve their homes.

Brakiath, rumbled and snarled from her place, her instincts surging at the gathering of dragons and people. It would be a touch-and-go Hatching, that was certain... and no one what would happen if any of the eggs were atypical. The gold would likely try to eat whatever fool male tried to approach!

"Gets your robes on! Get out there!" The shout came again and the Candidates were ushered out onto the Sands as the eggs began to rock and shiver.

The Clutch
Caught-In-The-Surge Egg - At first, the presence in this egg seems distant. Either the little one inside is still developing, or it just doesn't care that you're there. Rather abruptly, however, you feel a sudden surge of apology. This little one would like to make amends for its behavior by listening to you, if that's what you want. This egg is small enough to fit in with the rest of the Clutch, but leans toward the larger side of the eggs present. Likely a Green. ((Blue Hamanth to Brindi))

Eye of the Storm Egg - This little darling is one of the larger eggs of the Clutch, leading most to believe it will be a Blue. However, it is so quiet, so faint a presence, that there's no way to hint at what personality-type the egg holds. ((Betweened))

Peace and Quiet Egg - This egg exudes a kind of watchful tranquility. Although on the small side, likely a small Green, this egg gives the impression that it will always be well able to take care of itself and others, too, if they need it. Were you confused about something? Having trouble deciding whether or not you made the right decision? This is an issue it will have to mull over, but perhaps you just need to take some extra time to think about it as well, which you would have realized yourself, if given time. The shell is a mossy green patterned in faint, blurry speckles of black. A very calm outside to match the very calm occupant inside. ((Crimson Tessth to Selene))

Crimson Swirl Egg - This outgoing egg sits toward the center of the Clutch amid all the general hubbub of egg life. It leans this way and that depending on which egg it appears to be "listening to" at the moment-- or monitoring. When a Candidate touches this shell, it's readily apparent that this baby is making sure its siblings are playing nice and that it is the one who decides what nice is and what the punishment is for not playing nicely. The shell is a swirl of nearly black red and vibrant crimson, leading to its name. Likely a Green or a Blue. ((Green Gementh to Syn))

Silver Lining Egg - Small and vibrantly colored, this egg is clearly going to be a dragon beyond the ordinary when it hatches. The shell is a canvas of splashed grass green, sky blue, orange, and Crimson red. When you lay your hands on the shell, the dragon inside seems to weigh you even as it gives you a charming greeting and invites you to spend some time with it. Of course, your time is meant to be spent hearing about it, so the topic of conversation won't be hard to come up with, but it'll keep you entertained. Besides, it seems to say, with a friend (or future partner) like this, how can you ever lose? ((Black Wofth to Roeline))

Thunderclap Egg - Someone is trying to get your attention, and you better pay attention too. Even looking at another egg while your close to this one will invoke a fair bit of tempermental anger, and to be honest this egg while a touch on the small side is hard to take your eyes off - what with the way it's deep bloodred shell glints in the sun. It has placed itself as close to the candidates as possible - clearly it wants to be touched first and woe behold any candidate who dosen't do as it wants.((Silver Devith to Hekate))

Sweet-as-sin Egg - Everyone talks about just how sweet this egg seems to be, although a bit small this pale violet egg seems to enjoy just about everyone's company male and female alike. You get the impression that the hatchling inside wants to strike up a conversation with you and certainly can't wait to meet you! This egg has placed itself in the center of the clutch - as though trying to be as close to as many of it's siblings as possible.It's tilted slightly towards the outlaying Thunderclap egg as though attempting to call it back to the group. ((Crimson Loveth to Aislin))

On the Edge Egg - This egg is precariously balenced on it's tip...the wrong way up most of the time, but no matter how often someone comes along and tries to right it it always ends up back on it's tip again before to long. When the shell is touched one gets the impression of intense focus..but thats not entirely surprising..it must be hard to keep yourself upside down for that long! It's a bit to the outside of the group of eggs and probably one of the smallest in the group but you don't really get the feeling that it's positioning is really al that important..it's just..there.((Black Rioth to Nawa))

The Charge-on! Egg - Touching this egg insites a sense of bold bravery, it's around middle size for this clutch but oddly you get the feeling that it's got the bravery of a bronze lurking beneth the surface. Despite the bold brave feeling you get at first a lingering hand might get the impression that this little hatchling is waiting for the perfect moment to makes it's arrival. ((Green Courath to Dizzian))

Deep Thought Egg – This egg sits towards the back of the clutch, and judging by its size it contains either a large green or a smallish blue. The shell is a deep blueish purple and patterned with white specks, giving the overall impression of a starry sky. Candidates who touch it will feel that the dragon inside is assessing them and it gives the impression of doing so rather astutely. There is a certain sense of slightly aloof pride, even superiority radiating out from the shell. ((Blue Magith to Echlerov))

Quiet Pool Egg – This dull brown egg sits off to one side of the clutch, but points towards its siblings as though watching over them. It’s smallish for a dragon egg, but sits around the middle of the size spectrum for this clutch. On first touching it a candidate might wonder if it’s alive at all, there’s no real feeling from it at first. Anyone with the patience to linger and listen a little longer however will eventually receive a gentle, quiet acknowledgement accompanied by a feeling of peace. ((Green Hermith to Kytara))

Gleaming Egg – Hello candidate, have a brain full of greeting! Though it remains still this egg gives off the sense that any moment now it could explode into action. There is not a shred of self doubt in this egg, nor the sense that it is holding anything back from those who come to meet it. It welcomes any who touch it for as long as they wish to stay, but doesn’t seem upset or insulted when they do depart. Settled around the centre of the clutch this is possibly the largest egg in the clutch, and with its larger than life personality, and vivid shell of mottled orange and yellow it certainly seems it! ((Blue Solath to Freniar))

Erupting Egg – Small in size but not in presence this egg, sitting fairly centrally, will definitely leave an impression on anyone who touches it. At its base it is a solid, brilliant orange-red but further up swirls of grey mix in and gradually take over towards the tip. The dragonet inside seems to cut through the minds of candidates like a knife, prodding here and there in search of who the person touching it really is at their core, a startling experience to be sure. ((Dud))

Bountiful Egg - Sitting in the center of the clutch is an egg of swirling blue and buttery yellow. It reaches out indiscriminately to those who come to it, enveloping them in warmth and love. It might be quite small, but it is clear that the dragon inside this egg has a heart big enough for the mightiest queen that ever soared the skies of Pern. ((Green Empreth to Allaxon ))

The hatching would have to happen early in the morning, before he even had a chance for his morning cup of klah. This was going to be miserable. He got dressed in his robes sluggishly, wishing for klah but knowing there wasn't any time for it.

He joined the group of candidates, finding a place of his own. This was exciting, or would be as soon as he woke up a bit more, and nerve-wracking, knowing that there was so much that could happen, that would happen. The only thing that was really a given at one of these, or so he presumed, having never been to one before, was that there would be baby dragons and impressions, the rest, was a bit unknown.

He glanced around, looking at those who had already arrived. He gave the other candidates a sleepy grin, a bit excited about what was about to happen. He still didn't know where he stood on the whole thing, whether he wanted to impress or not, but he was doing his best to think happy thoughts.

The dragons were the ones to choose, and if there was one for him, it would be here.

Never before had Roeline been so excited to here the hum of the dragons, and to wake to it nonetheless! What a wonderful way to start out the morning! The young Candidate hardly needed the barking orders of the Candidatemaster to get ready and rush into place-- after she'd made sure that Saffy would listen and stay behind of course. She didn't think Brakiath would be too happy with the blue firelizard flitting about the Sands.

And now, here she was, lining up along the right with the rest of the female Candidates and eagerly awaiting the arrival of the baby dragons. Would her brothers be watching? She knew Breyan and Josen might be busy with the herdbeasts, but surely Sethren-- oops, "S'ren"-- would be watching, right? She looked about at the people gathering in the stands and the dragons gathering above. His brown shouldn't be too hard to spot...

--------------------

S'ren certainly had no intention on missing the Hatching, but he'd been a bit delayed in that he had been in the middle of and early morning bath when the humming had begun. While eager to get to the Weyrbowl quickly, he had rather needed to dry off and get dressed first.

Your sister is already on the Sands below, Tereth remarked, taking his place with the rest of the gathering dragons. The eggs may have been small, but there was still a good number of them. Every dragon counted.

Yes, I see her, S'ren replied with a faint smile, though admittedly he was a bit nervous. The Sands could be a dangerous place at times; hopefully this Hatching would go without too much trouble.

As the deep humming spread throughout the weyr Allaxon cocked his head. He was on kitchen duty and slicing cheese at the time. "Oh shards! They are hatching!" He scrambled to put the cheese away as best he could and babbled something to the head of the kitchen who shooed him out.

Sprinting he raced to the hatching grounds and vibrated with excitement as he tried to drag himself into the hatching robe. He walked swiftly with the other arrivals to the assigned male candidate area. This could be the day! He bumped the lad next to his happily and wished the fellow good luck. Then his eyes trailed over the golden queen and her precious gems.

Even though upon first hearing the rising hum of Trine's collective dragons Alilena briefly pondered perhaps staying in bed for awhile longer just this once, in the end the now non-Candidate dragged herself out of her bed regardless. Just because she might like to sleep in didn't mean that she should; if there were any particularly interesting Impressions or events on the Sands she might miss entirely, the gossip would be tinged with her regret for missing seeing them for days afterward. She wasn't a fan of regret at all.

As she entered the stands along with countless other weyrfolk determined to watch what this new clutch would bring to Trine, she was struck with a brief sense of...perhaps not regret, but reflection. Had she made the right choice? S'ren wasn't the only rider friend she'd consulted. But in the end, she did agree with him: if she wasn't entirely committed to devoting her life to the more active parts of a dragonrider's duty, it was a bad idea to try in times like these. There were plenty of other ways she could support her home weyr; other crafts she might take up. There were even options she might pursue if she could dare bring herself to leave her home...

But for now, she wouldn't worry about her future. Rather, as a spectator at this event, she'd rather hope for the successful futures of the candidates lining up on the Sands. And one in particular she'd like to keep an eye on... "Which one's your sister again?" Lena asked S'ren as she unceremoniously claimed the seat beside him, peering down. She knew Roeline was young, but it wasn't like even now the weyr was lacking in young candidates who'd just aged enough to make the attempt at finding a dragon partner.

"Lifth, hurry uuuuuuuup~! The Hatching is starting!"

I realize that. I was just humming, was I not?

"Then pick up that blue bum of yours and start moving faster. We're going to be late."

It's a Hatching. I don't see the rush. It's not as if every dragon hatches at the same moment.

G'brel had to sigh. "Lifth..." Honestly, now she was suspecting that the blue was taking his time for the sole purpose of irritating her.

Not the sole purpose. It is rather early still.

"... Let's just go."

---------------------------

S'koi had awoke that morning to the quiet hum of his life partner, signalling the arrival of another generation of dragons. He made haste in getting ready, but the actual trip to the Weyrbowl he took at a more leisurely pace. He wasn't particularly worried about what sort of seating he got, so long as he could find a place to watch from.

The eggs are rocking, Laith remarked, having flown ahead to find a place among the dragons. Soon there will be more to take the place of the fallen.

"Mm," S'koi agreed with a small nod, despite not currently being within his dragon's line of vision. Yes, with Thread falling once more we need more dragons now then ever. Let us hope the new riders pay closer attention in training. The last thing he wanted was for them to fall in their first true fight. Or at anytime really, but the point still stood.

Siano had been helping Lilias wash her Green Polarith and was near sopping wet. She rang her shirt out best as she could before slipping into the candidate robe. She saw there were a few already out on the sands but by far not all of them were there. She walked gracefully out and stood with pride. No matter what happened she was so lucky to be a part of today.

"Look mine they are rocking" Polarith said to hers through her humming. "More little darlings!"

Lillias smiled at her lifepartners exuberance. " I think you are taking after your sister a bit dear." Lilias grinned. "But yes, there is Siano, I wish her good luck, that girl is certainly not afraid to get dirty...or wet." Lilias sniggered. Polarith had gleefully and playfully dunked the both of them in the water. Lilias patted her hair delicately with her towel.

S'kor was finishing his morning meal. He paused with fork full of egg halfway to his mouth. The bronze in the weyr had started his hatching croon. Scarath? With the dragon's afirmation, he left the table and went to meet up. A quick jump up and he was astride. S'kor balanced easily as the dragon headed them over to the Hatching Sands.

He slid down the bronze hide to watch the impending Hatching. His eyes flickered over the incoming candidates. Would they be able to deal with the gold?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A dark green head nudged her and Optheli reached out to pet the muzzle. With her hand touching her green, the young woman could feel as well as hear the hum. She grinned realizing the eggs were ready to arrive.
"Let's go my love. We wouldn't want to miss any." A quick trip saw them at the Sands. She soothed the nervous green as they settled in the Stands to watch. Optheli grinned at the gathering riders. She waved to her brother standing beside his bronze. "Good luck candidates."
"Hello, Lena," S'ren greeted with a smile as the former-Candidate came to join him. "She's the one sorta towards the middle there. Really long light brown hair, blue eyes, not very tall." Of course, should any of the older Cadidates step in front of her she would very easily be hidden from view. "Did you sleep well?" A part of him had to wonder what it would be like to watch a Hatching after dropping out of Candidacy. Did she regret it? Or was she feeling confident in her choice? Obviously not everyone became a dragonrider, but to choose not to participate versus never being chosen... Well, he could see why the former option might be the better one for most. Lena's case was just a touch different though.
----------------
Ah, there was Tereth! That meant S'ren had to be here as well. Roeline beamed, casting one last look around the people gathering in the Stands before focusing her attention on the eggs. Hmm... Which one would hatch first... Would any remember her from the Touching? She supposed she would have to ask them later to find out.
Just as the Candidates were getting settled, the Charge-On egg rolled and knocked against the Deep Thought egg, causing both to crack somewhat. The Deep Though wiggled in response but before that dragonet could poke a leg or an arm out, the Charge-On egg had apparently decided that now was the time to make its grand entrance.
The egg burst and the shards of the shell slid down the dragon's body as the little green flexed with all her might. Shaking her wings out she looked up and snorted, a little goo bubble popping off her snout as she surveyed the Candidates. Unsteady at first, she toddled this way then that, then finally seemed to pick a direction and wobbled, new wings still dragging on the ground, towards the girls.
Deep Thought seemed less inclined to make such a scene and while all eyes were on the first of the dragons to hatch, it had neatly broken through its shell was cleaning off... though it was apparent, even from a distance, that this Blue was incredibly scrawny and small. A runt, perhaps? Snorting, he flicked his wing tip to rid it of goo and reared up to get a better vantage point, the spark of intelligence bright in his gaze.
Echlerov yawned as the little green hatched, still not fully awake. He was getting there though, and watched as the little green wobbled off towards the girls. He suspected that she would pick one of them, but they would see.
He glanced over at the eggs, and noticed that there was a little blue. It was small, but he seemed healthy, and that was what was important. They had been small eggs.
It didn't seem as if any of the other eggs were at the hatching point yet, so the boy watched the little blue, wondering he was going to go over to the girls as well.
PostPosted: Sat May 26, 2012 1:52 pm
"Mmhmm," Lena murmured in reply to S'ren's query, more interested in finding the girl in question...ah! There she was. Tiny and cute~ Well. She was fairly tiny herself, she supposed she shouldn't be 'talking.' Her eyes flickered back to the Sands at the crack of egg on egg, and she smiled faintly at the bursting out of the apparently anxious-to-get-out-there green. Though the superstition did prefer bronzes for a clutch's luck, she didn't think a healthy, determined green was all that bad of a sign. Certainly the clutch might be small, and the dragons within it likewise, but greens--and even tiny blues--were necessary too. "That is perhaps one of the smallest blues I've seen at Hatching," she commented to S'ren, amused. Perhaps he'd be agile as a green to compensate for his size?
------------
Eltimioth joined the dragons settling in to watch, coaxing her way into a place near Tereth. We are watching for S'ren's...sister? she asked, prompting given to her by her rider.
Meanwhile, below in the stands, greenrider E'lai joined S'ren and...what was the girl's name again? A-something? "Good morning," he said, resisting the urge to yawn. It might be a long enough Hatching already without him setting the others off into yawning as well. There was never really any telling quite how long a Hatching would stretch, and given Brakiath's rider was not present to indicate the queen mother's thoughts... He did worry, for atypical eggs. Their beginnings were difficult enough without an irate mother making things even more unlikely for their survival. Or would the gold break the eggs open herself? He supposed they would see...
Oh! Two eggs had cracked! Roeline watched closely as the green made her gran entrance into the world, creating an impressive display as she burst out of her egg. Yup, she was definitely going to be pulling her weight in her wing. As the green came their way, Roeline had to wonder which of the girls she would chose as Hers.
In the meantime, it would seem that the other egg had hatched as well. Aaaaaw, what a cute little blue! He was so tiny~~ heart Ugh, must not hug new unbonded dragons... Such a shame too; she would so totally be tempted to if it wouldn't risk being eaten by the golden mother in the process...
Not long after they were settled and one egg decided it was way past time. It rolled and cracked into another. S'kor glanced at the gold, but she did nothing. A green hatched from the first and she headed for the girls. Not long after and a small blue made his appearance. Where was his rider standing?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watching the newly hatched dragons was a deilght. Optheli wrapped an arm under the neck of Dynith. She wished the goldrider had awoken from her coma to see this. They would just have to tell her when she did. She waited to see if the green in the lead would Impress first, or the mellow blue.

"Perhaps, though I'm sure he'll be a plenty decent flier," he agreed, unknowingly echoing her thoughts on the matter. S'ren had to smile when another familiar face came to join them. "Good morning, E'lai," he greeted, shuffling over a bit to make more room. "Not enough time for a morning cup of klah I see," he remarked jokingly in response to the other's yawn. "You're here just in time though. Already have two eggs hatched." If the other eggs kept up this pace the hatching would likely be over rather soon.

Yes, she's down below, Tereth answered his fellow dragon, giving a pleased rumble at the arrival of the green. Glad you could make it.
