Living with Elder Jovra was vastly different then living with her parents. For one she was required to help out in the kitchen on the days when it wasn’t her turn for a morning spar. Chores were split up and everyone did something different each week instead of it being a set task. Another was that there were six children of various ages being fostered by Elder Jovra and the place was always lively. This week had seen her tending to the Dojo’s vegetable garden. It was a fast and fairly easy chore since they didn’t allow weeds to take root for too long. The most Elleth ever found herself doing was making sure each plant was watered and had no sneaky weed trying to sprout. What little produce was ready for harvest had already been plucked and sent to the cold cellar under the kitchen.

Elleth wiped away small beads of sweat from her brow and glanced up at the sky. It was barely noon and a perfect day for a dragon kill, if she could find one and if she was allowed out. Elder Jovra hadn’t exactly mentioned anything about her being able to leave for a hunt though she had seen some of the older children leaving whenever their chores were done.

“Heeeeyy Elly-Elleth, when are you going to go get beaten up by a dragon again?”
A gravely voice behind her asked, scaring the living daylights out of Elleth. A hand over her heart as she tried to calm down Elleth turned to glare at the girl. But Eliji wasn’t one to be intimidated so easily as she already had a few Dragon Orbs from some of the stronger dragons. “You know you can go whenever you’re done with your work right? Just let someone know and go a hunting.”

"Does this mean you'll let anyone know who asks where I am?" Elleth asked hesitating. While everyone lived in harmony together it didn't mean that everyone was particularly nice to everyone else. Elleth tried to be friendly to her fellow foster family but it was hard work at times, most of them seemed to have a permanent grumpy air about them.

“Sure, just don’t get eaten okay. Elder Jovra would have my hide.” Eliji replied distantly as she picked up the buckets that she’d been carrying. “Go on now, scram before someone finds you and asks you to help them or something.”

Elleth didn’t need to be told twice and she shot off the moment she put her tools away. It was a small side trip to her room to change, and out of the Dojo she went. Her hands were still covered in dirt and she had smudges of it on her face and knees, but she didn’t care. If all went well she’d be dirty again anyway. The trip through the city was a blur and the forest itself seemed to loom out of nowhere when she finally arrived. A thrill of something raced down her spine as she crept further in. Everyone knew that the dragons didn’t come close to the city because of the strong guards that watched its borders.

It seemed to be her lucky day and a dragons unlucky one. The first one she came across was more than half dead. Its wings were shreaded and it's limbs twisted. From the claw marks that were gouged into its flank she guessed that it had fought another dragon and lost horribly. The Ysail was oblivious to its surroundings as it whined softly in pain.

The longer Elleth watched it the more she noticed that it seemed to be healing. It's wounds didn't look at bad as they did the first time she came across it. Well we can't have that now could we? With a determined glint in her eye Elleth marched up to the dragon and pulled her hands back. The first sharp jab to an open wound didn't register to the dragon, but the second and third ones did.

It reared back with a squeal of surprise and pain, only for the sound to cut off as the dragon slumped down. It's body rapidly decayed leaving behind a small Dragon Soul which Elleth quickly pocketed.

It was a victory but she felt dissatisfied. All she'd done was given the killing blow. There was no grand battle where she felt as if she'd die at least once. No. This called for another search.
