The sun was just starting to set. The last of the day's light reflected off the gentle waves of the water creating dancing sparkles which blinded poor Eirith. She squinted against the light, wishing she could better enjoy the loveliness of it. Tears sprung into her eyes, pooling and finally spilling down her cheeks, leaving wet trails in her fur.
Eirith let out a small huff and finally closed her eyes in defeat. Exploring with your eyes closed was no easy task, but she'd managed to make it to the edge of the water. She wondered if her parents would worry about her, though she knew they wouldn't. They would if she had actually been able to sneak off. But no, even now she knew she was being followed. Father was most likely in the forest, watching her every move. Instead of annoying her, it gave her comfort, and made her braver.
So she continued along the edge of the water, keeping her eyes closed.

From under the water, the setting sun looked like gently dancing waves of orange and yellow. They welcomed Lyric to the surface, and as her head broke the waves she drank in the fresh evening air. She was close to the beach, and as she turned in that direction she noticed someone standing beside the water.
A foal?
Lyric's legs easily shredded through the water, drawing her quickly to the shore.
She's crying?
On the foals sides, she noticed a soft hint of velvety wings. She'd never seen wings like that before. She wondered what this foal was doing out here, all alone. Perhaps she was lost.
Lyric stepped out of the water and approached the foal with an air of concern.
"Hello, little one, are you lost?"

Eirith's head turned to the sound of a the stranger's voice. She thought the voice had come from the water, though her eyes remained closed. Curious, she took a step into the water, letting the gentle waves lap at her tiny hooves.
"Lost? I do hope I'm not…" Her head tilted to the side as the mare approached. Had she come out of the water? Eirith moved closer and pressed her nose to the mare's flank, taking note of the wetness of her fur. "Were you in the water just now?" she asked, looking up to the mare, her eyes still closed.

"Oh? That is good that you aren't lost..."
Lyric stood still, curiously studying the filly as she pressed her nose against her. Her eyes were closed, perhaps this had something to do with the wetness she detected in her eyes, yet the filly did not seem to be in any sort of pain. But if she wasn't lost, then her parents must be near by. Lyric scanned the area, but didn't see anyone else. The wind wasn't blowing in the right direction to get a scent, and so she was left in the dark to whether anyone else was around or not. The filly didn't seem to be frightened either, and Lyric guessed that she must have some sort of herd nearby, or had either bravely wandered away from her parents, like the other foal she had recently met. She wondered if this was common among foals. Come to think of it, she had done a bit of wandering of her own when she was younger...
"Yes, I did just come out of the water," she answered the filly. "My name is Lyric. What is your name?"

Eirith tried to imagine why this mare would have wanted to be so far out in the water. She imagined if there was no other choice, she herself could possibly swim. But then her wings would be all wet, and her fur and her mane…and it must be tedious work to move about in water, she thought.
"My name…" she paused a moment. "It's Eir," she finished, deciding to go with the shortened version. She didn't quite feel comfortable giving her full name to a complete stranger.
Eirith opened her eyes only slightly to take in the form of the soquili that had just emerged from the water. But as soon as the light hit her eyes, more tears began to leak down her face. All she could see was a blurred figure in front of her. She was forced to close her lids once again.
"Do you want to play with me?" she asked smiling a bit, despite the pain in her eyes. She could feel the sun's rays finally starting to diminish, knowing soon enough they would be completely gone.

"Hello, Eir," Lyric responded, smiling. She'd never heard the name before, but something about it seemed to be fitting for her.
As Eir opened her eyes, Lyric caught a glimpse of a small silvery eye, but her eyes again clouded in tears and became hidden again. Eir smiled through her tears, but it was worrisome to Lyric.
"Sure, I would like to play with you," she said, "but is everything alright? Do your eyes hurt?" If there was anything she could do to help, she wanted to make sure to offer.

The smile remained on her face as she looked up blindly at the mare. She began to nod her head that everything was alright, but realized Lyric meant her eyes.
"Hmm? Oh..." She squeezed her eyes shut tightly, trying to rid them of tears. "It burns. Real bad." She tried to motion toward the setting sun with her head."Is normal. It will stop when the sun goes. Lucky my skin doesn't burn right off!" She laughed a little, as if it were some joke only she understood.
She began to sway back and forth excitedly. She'd not had much interaction with others outside of her family, and was excited that this mare wanted to play with her.
"What will we play? Hide and seek?" She pranced a bit, her transparent wings fluttering. "If you hide I bet I will find you. Even with closed eyes."

Lyric looked on with concern, trying to figure out what Eir was trying to tell her. Why would her eyes be burning?
"Oh," she realized, "you have...an allergy to the sun?" She didn't get the joke, so she didn't laugh along, though she was also glad that her skin wasn't burning off. She didn't think this was a common condition, but it seemed quite normal to Eir.
Despite the fact, it was very cute how excited she looked about the idea of playing. Lyric had never played hide and seek with a foal before, so it was a little exciting to her as well. And, she was quite curious to put Eir to the test and see if she really could find her with her eyes closed. No doubt, her other senses were quite good.
"Okay," she said, "I'll take you up on that challenge." She turned and began to look for a place to hide. "I'll go hide then, and you count to 30, and then come find me."

Eirith nodded a bit as the mare spoke. "Yes…the sun." She knew the sun's light would be gone soon enough. Then Eirith would possibly have an unfair advantage, given she was quite accustomed to seeing in the dark.
A grin spread across Eirith's face, revealing her small sharp fangs. The mare had agreed to play. "Alright, I'll start…one…two…" She began her slow count, keeping her eyes shut tightly not only to shield them from the sun, but also because she didn't want Lyric to think she might cheat and look.
"nine…ten.. eleven…" She began to slowly spin in a circle. Though it'd throw off her sense of direction, she had confidence that she could still find her way to her new friend.

Lyric noticed the sharp fangs of the little filly and wondered where they might have come from. She knew Kelpies sometimes had fangs, but Eirith didn't look anything like a Kelpie. Regardless, she still seemed like a sweet creature.
As she turned in circles and started to count, Lyric wondered where she could hide. Of course, hiding in the water would have been a very unfair thing to do. She finally decided on a clump of trees a few yards away.
She guessed that Eirith's sense of smell must be very good, and was very curious to see how she would find her.
