To say she was nervous was an understatement, she was practically vibrating as she walked, dark dead leaves crunching loudly underfoot. She was in the forest again, the only difference was that this time there was a large and foreboding shadow walking behind her. Elleth gulped and glanced behind her again, only to meet the dark gaze of her Father. He jerked his head forward and Elleth hurried to obey, short legs stretching as she sped up. She heard her Father lengthen his stride, easily keeping up with her nearly panicked not quite run. Oh she knew she was going to fail miserably with him looming behind her.
Her misery was nearly tangible when it happened. A sharp inhale of breath was her only warning before something picked her up and flung her against a tree. Bark flew in different directions as time seemed to slow for Elleth. All she could see were malicious eyes the size of her body staring her down, promising a silent and painful death. All she could feel at the moment was the vines that were wrapping around her frame, tightening as they moved. Then the pain hit and a shrill wail shattered the moment.
The dragon wasted no time in throwing her against the trees, breaking the bark and leaving only evidence of pain, blood, and violence in the wake of its attacks. For Elleth each attack seemed to blur into the next and pain became a hazy afterthought. A part of her felt sick but a majority of her was screaming at her to do something. But what could she do? She could barely catch her breath, her arms were pinned to her sides, and her feet had yet to touch ground. She was going to die and there was nothing that she could do to prevent it. Her previous victories against the dragons were flukes, sheer flukes that happened because luck had been on her side.
Now that luck was gone and that same grizzled dragon she’d seen earlier was here to eat her heart and leave her remains as a warning against other hopeful dragon hunters. So engrossed in her fading thoughts of death it took a moment for Elleth to realize that she wasn’t being tossed around like she weighed nothing. Instead she was sailng through the air, the severed remains of the thick vines still coiled around her body. She hit the ground and continued to bounce a distance away, somehow managing to not hit anything that would have broken her already battered body on the way. As it was she’d gone through quite a few bushes.
Dazedly she stared up at the forest canopy that seemed to grow even darker as her vision was swarmed by black spots.
She didn’t know when she passed out, but what she did know was that she hurt badly and she couldn’t recall the reason why she hurt as much as she did. The last thing she remembered was sitting down to breakfast and her Father telling her that they’d be going out to the forest. After that nothing. Something jostled her side, causing her to yelp in pain. There was a ringing in her ears and her sight was dimming again. Elleth could just barely make out the figures of her parents and what looked like a lot of small rolls and thin bits of something. Bark maybe? The closets figure was saying something but she couldn’t make out what. A hand came closer and pressed against her neck and Elleth knew no more.
