Sort of an interesting question here - interesting because I didn't see anybody else talking about this around here, so I'm just curious what you all think about it.

I'm pagan, and I veil - meaning that I cover my head with a scarf for personal religious reasons. I generally don't do this at home, I don't even do it all the time when I go out, but I do veil semi-regularly. For me it's kind of a reminder to remember to honor the Gods as I go about my day. Nobody really asked me to do this, it's just something I do.

I've heard that I'm not the only pagan girl that does this, but as of yet I'm the only one that I know that does. So I guess my question is, do any of the pagan girls around here veil? If yes, why do you do it? And even if you don't, what do you think about it?

I read an article on veiling back in March. Its an interesting idea but I don't do it. It just doesn't have any relevance to my path right now if ever.

Yeah I saw an article a couple months ago about it, but that was way after I had started veiling. I just don't actually personally know any other pagan girls that veil.

I've...never actually come across this. It's an interesting idea though. I could see it being relevant to some paths though it has no place in mine. Heathen women of old may or may not have worn a scarf or cap kind of thing (it's likely but inconclusive) but I would peg it as more of a cultural thing than a religious or spiritual practice. It was early medieval Europe after all. And really there's no need or place for it in my practice. I don't really need a reminder to honor and remember my Gods as I go about my day. I don't even wear a hammer often though I have a very nice on. My beliefs and my faith are a part of who I am and how I live my life.

You know I've think I've come to the point where I don't necessarily need the reminder, but the practice has become part of who I am. Though I don't where it all the time. It's like a semi-regular thing. I get stricter with myself around days I consider holy because then it's sort of like me physically declaring today more than mundane, you know? I think what's happened is that lately I've been declaring more days than usual as something more than mundane. More importantly I feel like at least one of my Gods has asked that I keep wearing it as a way to honor her - regardless if the reminder is or isn't needed now. So it's for that too.

I don't veil, but I keep my hair braided. There's some evidence that culturally Heathen women braided their hair after marriage. It's something that I started doing shortly after my wedding because it felt right, and then I found out later about the practice. I've thought about covering it, like a barrette with a net or pouch to hold my hair.

Much like the head coverings though, the evidence is inconclusive. And also likely a cultural thing, not a religious practice as head coverings and hair braiding seem to have remained a part of the culture after the conversion. Still, if it works for you the go for it.

I wouldn't ever do it; what it symbolises to me is essentially counter to my beliefs. But if it works for you, go for it.

Out of curiosity, what does it symbolize to you?

A pagan is a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim.

And veiling is something similar or exactly to what's shown in this article. It doesn't necessarily cover the whole body.

It can be, though some seem to prefer a hijab style and many go for just a simple bandana tied over their hair. There's no specific rules about it and the pagans who do it come from many different paths and perspectives (though it seems popular with specific types of Hellenics). And no, pagans are specifically not Jewish (or Christian or Muslim). You need to understand that "pagan" is an umbrella term though. There's a lot of different types of pagans who follow different Gods and believe different things. So while some pagans may veil, it's not exactly a "pagan thing" because there are so many different types of paganism.

It can be. But as Raven said there's no specific rules about it.
