Syd sent a quick note to Wilson, a slightly stubborn expression on his face. Sure he was an intermediate, but she was fighting monsters that were stronger than she was on a surprisingly regular basis. So she wanted to try to learn to fight against someone stronger--and who better to learn from than a friend?

She was pacing in the training field, Izy already summoned, giving herself a prep talk.

There was the familiar ring of his cellphone as he lay in one of the bunk beds. Wilson flipped the phone open and opened the new message. He hummed thoughtfully when he realized it was a text from Sydney, asking for a spar. The trainee eyed the message for a few moments before replying back.

Text from Wilson
i’m coming

The mist trainee was already there when he arrived. She was pacing, murmuring to herself. Wilson chuckled. “Hey! Ready?”

He reached up to slip the goggles off of his neck. There was the familiar weight of his weapon in his arms and Wilson slid on the mask. “Alright, who should start?”

Gramps answered the question very nicely when he spurted out a tiny puff of green.

She ah, should have thought about this before she invited him to spar, Syd thought as she looked at his mask and the puff of green. She could have prepared better. Instead of admitting that fact, Syd jumped back, bringing up her weapon and letting go with a shot. It nicked his FEAR shield, but a slight frown pulled at her lips nonetheless.

"Thank you for helping me out," she said, rather than what she was thinking.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well.

Perhaps the mist trainee would be able to catch a glimpse of innocent curiosity on Wilson’s face before it disappeared behind the black mask. It had been a while since he had sparred with someone new. He had pretty much forgotten the similar kinds of reactions other trainees threw him.

He was somewhat started when Syd jumped back, but then Wilson realized the spar had started. He was so smart.

“No problem!” Wilson chirped. “Always glad to help.”

Then Gramps not-so-subtly suggested for him to actually, you know, attack her. Oh, right! Haha.

He swung his cannon at her torso.

Syd grunted as it hit her and danced backwards, trying to get some distance between the two of them. She worked better when sparring at a distance, it gave her a better aim--and plus, she wasn't that big on hand to hand combat. That sort of explained why the crossbow was the perfect weapon for her.

She pulled the trigger when she had a decent aim, hitting his FEAR shield. But he was still too close for comfort--then again, maybe he was dangerous at a distance, too...

Wilson began to step forward, following after Syd until he noticed her aiming the crossbow at him. His eyes widened. No no no no. Wilson did not appreciate being shot at close range. The trainee attempted to backpedal before he remembered that sidestepping was probably an easier solution, but the blade of the arrow head still managed to hit his arm. He hissed and awkwardly rubbed at the injured spot. Painful, but nothing he couldn’t handle.

Then he pointed one of his cannons at Syd. He could do close combat if he wanted, but that usually earned him numerous rants from his partner, usually along the lines of THAT IS NOT HOW I’M USED or WHAT ARE YOU THINKING WHY. His weapon was best at mid or long range, after all. Wilson fired a shot of gas.

Syd coughed, inwardly cursing as she jumped back further and aimed, then shot. It was a great shot, she thought, hitting him straight on and hard. She looked away for a second as it hit, coughing lightly, though. That fog stuff of his seemed dangerous, still.

But she was going to learn to deal with it, she thought with a little pull at the corner of her lips. She was going to learn to fight in all situations, she swore.

Sometimes, Wilson really wished Gramps had been a gun instead of cannons. Wilson could do guns. He liked guns. Guns were his hobby. He could also skillfully shoot with guns and he could run with them without getting tired. Running around with a pair of freaking cannons plus a pack? Not so easy.

Plus the arrow had managed to hit his cannon when he used it to cover himself as a shield. Not exactly the brightest idea in the book. It was like a one-bull stampede inside his mind, courtesy of Gramps. Wilson managed to brush the arrow off, but flinched at the tirade the catoblepas was giving him.

The fact the cannons just plain refused to fire anything sort of maybe really made things worse.

Izy said.

Fine, go for it, she said, having given up on arguing with him about his habits. If he wanted to use his ability, she would use it. It was super flashy, though... although she supposed that fit him, she decided as she pulled the trigger.

And it lit up FAR too early, doing nothing except looking like a pretty firecracker. Joy.

Wilson was ready for whatever attack Sydney decided to throw his way. He was poised, ready to jump away at a moment’s notice, but then nothing happened. No, technically the attack looked like a very pretty firecracker, which Wilson did enjoy. He liked firecrackers and sparks. So he allowed himself to relax for the moment and amuse himself with the sight. “Very pretty!” he commented.

It could have been an insult, but it was actually supposed to be a compliment.

[That’s dandy and all, but how about you use my attack, hm?] Oh, right!

Gas. Gas everywhere as he fired out a large shot of green.
