Welcome to Breed All About It, a thread to get all your dog breed news! If there's a new breed, a change in an existing one, or something new going on within the AKC/Breed Clubs, you can find out about it here! There's a lot that goes on in the world of dogs. A lot that we, loving pet owners, sometimes don't even know about.
I will also be using this thread as an extension of my upcoming blog, which will go into detail about the new "designer dog" fad to help promote breed awareness for the unsuspecting owner-to-be.

❶ Respect. Use it. I understand this thread may strike a nerve with others who are passionate about dogs and have their own opinions. Keep in mind that I am only receiving my information directly from the sources themselves (the clubs/AKC), which means it reflects within the dog world and its already set in stone. You can argue it to death, but it won't change their minds. So be nice.
❷ Discussions is welcome. Posting in this thread is totally allowed, as long as everyone remains civil to myself and one another.
❸ Constructive debates are welcome. If done in a mature manner, I see absolutely nothing wrong with people debating on something I've posted or something someone said. I understand passion drives a lot of people and I enjoy seeing that come out through people's posts if done professionally. As soon as I feel as though things are getting out of hand, however, you will be warned and asked to continue your debate through PMs.

Title . New breed! Miniature American Shepherd

Description . After years of Australian Shepherd owners battling a false claim that the Aussie came in a "mini" and "standard" form, the NAMASCUSA membership officially approved the USASA Proposal for a new breed: Miniature American Shepherd. No longer does the "Mini Aussie" exist, officially.
There has never been, nor will there ever be, a size variation to the Australian Shepherd. For those who don't know, some breeds have these size variations. A good example is the Poodle, which has three recognized sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. With that said, early breeders, who favored a smaller-than-average type of Aussie, started breeding these smaller dogs. While some of these dogs were, in fact, bred to other, smaller Aussies, there were other breeds thrown into the mix to help achieve the smaller size. Over time, there was a division in the fanciers, so various names came up for these dogs, the most popular being the "Miniature Australian Shepherd." AKA "Mini Aussie."
As with any designer dog, the name caught on to back yard and less-than reputable breeders, who used the name as a marketing scheme to attract potential puppy parents. Recently, this "breed" has become popular, causing a lot of controversy between real Aussie breeders, who don't want the dogs called Mini Aussies as the name isn't accurate to the breed standard, and the breeders of these smaller dogs.
"Neither AKC nor ASCA register anything called a "Mini Aussie." ASCA takes it so far as to pull the papers on any dog that is also registered with another registry as a mini. AKC may be doing something similar in the near future. There are a number of less reputable registries that will register "Mini Aussies," and a couple better ones which include MASCA and NAMASCA. These at least track pedigrees. The worst ones would include Continental Kennel Club (CKC, not to be confused with the reputable Canadian Kennel Club), APRI, ASDR, and others as they will register anything that vaguely resembles a "purebred" and some even register crossbred dogs." - [source]
After four years of research and getting everything together, however, the NAMASCUSA and AKC finally decided on an official name for these "Mini Aussies" - The Miniature AMERICAN Shepherd. These dogs are not associated with the Australian Shepherd in anyway and never will be. ILP/PAL dogs over 18” at the withers will compete as Australian Shepherds. Dogs 18” and less at the withers will compete as MAS. This applies to new entrants and to dogs that are already in the ILP/PAL program, effective as soon as practicable.
There will always be breeders who won't associate themselves with the AKC or any other reputable club, and who will continue to label their dogs as "Mini Aussies." However, with this new, official knowledge, you can now properly educate people in hopes to spread the word.

So what's this about "designer dogs" you've been hearing so much about? Designer dogs are mutts given fancy names and sold for ridiculous amounts of money. Peekapoo, puggle, labradoodle, etc. They're usually marketed as "rare" or "hypoallergenic" to the unsuspecting potential puppy owner for a lot more money than actual, purebred dogs.
So why the fuss? What's wrong with mutts? Mutts are amazing dogs, but there are THOUSANDS of them in shelters looking for homes and millions of them being put to sleep because they didn't find one in time. While all these back yard breeders are breeding two dogs together, slapping a cute, fancy name on the puppies, and selling them for profit, there are thousands of the same exact dog waiting to be picked in a shelter.
What can you do to help? Promote awareness and proper education! This post will be used in coagulation with my upcoming Facebook page, which will help do what I just mentioned - educate. I'll post the most recent news, good and bad, about designer dogs and ways we can all help stop this epidemic. We not change the world, but if we change the world for even one dog, we did our part <3
