Mkulima wasn't sure what his future would hold. He'd tried to read his own paw, but hadn't gotten anywhere with it. Only when he was sitting alone like this, without Mkulami at his side, could he admit to himself that he was becoming more and more jealous of her. Sure, it wasn't her fault that their mother had picked her to take her place when she became too old. He thought Lami was a great choice too! But they'd always done everything together, and now they'd have to be apart. Like now. She was learning from mother how to lead the pride, and he was left sitting alone.

Many of his siblings had shown aptitude for things. Dancing or making trinkets or telling fortunes. He'd always been so busy joking with Lami to try to learn anything though, and he swiftly was growing near adulthood. He could just be a lord forever, doing nothing but still demanding respect. That didn't seem fair though. Paw reading seemed the thing he might be good at...but he couldn't read his own paw. Maybe no one could? Well. He'd try again. On someone else's paw! But they only had a few visitors today, and most were busy watching the dancing.

"Paw readings!" He called out. "Free paw readings! Learn about today, tomorrow, and next Tuesday! Paw readings here..." At least none of the dedicated paw readers were giving him trouble about edging in on their turf.

She should not have been out here, at all... if anyone in the pride knew they would have her guts for garters and she would be shackled to the nursery for the next ten thousand years. Suffice to say that the pride had been incredibly over protective within the last few years after the tsunami. Their numbers had dwindled so much that they were desperately clawing their way back to a sufficient level - not to mention some of the pridal upheaval and well... some things had been awkward.

It really shouldn't have come at no surprise that the curious female, young in her years, had slipped away unnoticed for a little while. She would come back of course, but she just wanted to see what was a little further down the coast. She'd heard stories from passing rogues and it never hurt to see for herself, right?

Thus, while the guards were thoroughly distracted she had slipped away from their watchful gaze and into the Kizi lands - it was here that she caught wind of one of the most bizarre things she'd ever heard and with unbridled curiosity she drew a little further in. Eyes as round as saucers she soon came to Mkulima and stared at him in confusion.

"...What's a paw reading?" she asked at last.

Oh. Oh my. All thoughts of his worries flew from the young male's mind as a vision stepped right out of heaven and up to him. She was radiant in pink and white, her fur curled lightly by the sea's salty air. She was so stunning, and had such a powerful effect on his teenage hormones that he was struck silent for a long moment.

"Uhhh..." Keep it together now Mkulima! He mentally shook himself and blinked. Deep breath. Okay, you can do this. Remember, make it look good! Like all your tricks! He bit his tongue and launched himself into his charade, if only to keep himself from freezing up again. He sat back on his haunches and reached out to take her paw (so soft...no! Focus!) turning it pad-up so he could inspect it. "Paw reading is the ancient art of reading the lines on one's paw to determine their fate, my lovely sea flower... Past, present, future; fortune, love, lot in life...all of it is right her, in the pad of your paw, if you know how to read the lines."

Hey, that sounded pretty good! Maybe he wouldn't be too bad at this after all!

She gave a little gasp for his description sounded truly superb, there would be no doubt in anyone's mind that she was intrigued. The lion had her sold from the get go, particularly when she could see nothing special about her paws and he could... Call her naive, but she had yet to experience the wiles of a gypsy and as such, she had no idea that some of them might be speaking utter nonsense. Ah, but there was one tiny bump in the road in the sense that she was lacking in payment...trinkets just weren't something she carried around and her face fell as a result.

"Oh, that sounds awesome," she murmured and then shook her head. "But I don't have anything to give you in return so I'll have to pass," she continued and offered a wry smile. It wasn't the solution she was most satisfied with and it did mean she would have to sneak out again...but at least next time she would rememebr to bring something to trade!

A sea shell or something?

Something really pretty...

"How'd you learn to do it though? Is it something you're born with or were you taught it?"

Sky above and sea below, her voice was as radiant as her fur. He stared, glassy-eyed, for a long moment before shaking himself mentally. Not the time to be spacing out! He'd gotten her attention, and she was interested too. He shouldn't squander the gift of such a glorious angel's time by staring rudely.

"Ah, no no!" He suddenly had a brilliant idea. Before she could pull her paw away (heaven forbid! He felt his body would shatter to lose the touch of her fur on his!) he put his spare one over it, holding it between his. "No need...first reading of the day's free! Uhm. Good karma, and all. I do something nice for the world, and sometime in the future, good will happen to me." That sounded good enough. Didn't it?

"Ah...well, a bit of both, really. Lots of lions here are born with special gifts. Reading paws, reading fortunes in leaves and bones and bird trails. Lots of things. But of course, to do it right, you have to practice. Like with any talent." He smiled kindly at her, finally releasing her paw, assuming she would not pull away. Practice was exactly how he'd learned. Or rather, he told himself, would learn.

Karma? He certainly had a strange way of talking. She'd never heard of this concept but from the general overview she'd received in those brief seconds she rather liked the idea. Admittedly it seemed a little far-fetched based on how she had been raised but then again, who was she to question how the world worked? In many respects 'karma' could have been something controlled by the gods and if it worked then...

"Does that work?" she asked at last, keeping her paw in between his as she regarded him with curiosity. She didn't expect a solid answer, but she knew better than to predict an answer. "It sounds really nice - do something nice and you get rewarded for it with something in return. Maybe not something big but it's the sentiment that counts," she mused and then shook her head. As wonderful as the concept might be it was probably for the better than she didn't spout nonsense regarding it at the moment!

She'd get in trouble at home.

Her cover would be blown.

Etc etc.

Nevertheless he was explaining his art and she stared at him in puzzlement as he continued. "Most of my pride are architects, healers, herbalists... I don't think we have anything quite so fanciful," she confessed.
