I'm planning on introducing a new (or not so much new as different) type of roleplay than anything that we have so far. I was inspired by seeing a vaguely similar concept in a guild that I'm a member of and I adapted it to my own guild where it has been quite successful and a great deal of fun, too. This would be an event that takes place within BURN itself. Any member can join in and come and go as they like, but it is a time-active role-play. That means that unless you've got a little time to spare, it would be unwise to start posting, since time elapses whether you're there or not. It's best to write your character out, but if you forge, fall asleep, are called away suddenly, disconnected, etc, we usually just say that you fell asleep. This is the kind of RP that may not appeal to everyone as there is no central overarching story or plot-line. Combat is another thing that may not be present. It's not that I am wholly opposed to combat, but I would not be personally running it or delineating rules as to how it is to be conducted. This would be more of a character-development, social, hang-out RP, which is another aspect that makes it so different from the average RP. This means that in essence, nobody "runs" it. It mostly takes care of itself with RP moderators (so far only me) to take care of any disputes. This particular type of RP can quickly be absolutely awash with cast and crew, so at least for the beginning, while we're seeing how things go, keep it to one character. Normally, this would be your avatar, but it doesn't have to be. I don't want limit anyone to any sort of character. I want it to be as diverse as Gaia, with zombies, aliens, centaurs, and what have you, all somehow coexisting, so I created the idea of a dimensional nexus. Here's how I worded it in my guild: Matasoga Setting and Back-Story: It is my aim to prevent any forced changes in any character's back-story, while still defining the universe in which Matasoga resides. For role-playing purposes, the guildhall sits on a dimensional nexus. There is a door, in most universes, that leads to the guildhall. While in their world of origin, your character can interact with beings that don't exist in Matasoga's universe, use magic that doesn't exist there, etc, but I do have final decision in what does exist within the guildhall. It would be very similar to that, with everyone coming from a different universe to this pocket dimension that we all share. Really I don't want the hows or whys to be an enormous plot point, but if you're character was created to be a medieval knight, you have just as much right to be there as someone from a futuristic society on an alien planet. There are a few decisions to make, before we can really get started, and the first is time of day. I motion that we just keep Gaia's time (which is centered in California in the US, and everyone who has set their time-zones on Gaia already knows what the difference between their time and Gaia-HQ time is. Oh, and the literacy level is semi-literate. I want everyone with a basic grasp of English grammar to be able to play and sometimes you'll be asking a question as part of a conversation with low levels of consequence or emotional response. I don't want to penalize anyone for making a one or two sentence post in such a situation as that. If, however, you are able to make an advanced-literate post in as little as 15 minutes or less, by all means feel free to do so. Semi-literate is more the lowest that will be admissible, but at the same time I don't want everyone waiting for an hour for you to type the next chapter of your epic tale that is your character's reaction. The bigger question is Layout. My thinking is that this will be a very large and very active RP. My intent is that every room in which a good bit of roleplaying could occur (so, for example there don't need to be boiler room, bathroom, or kitchen threads, and so on) so this shouldn't be a single-thread RP. Really, the idea that something this potentially big should be confined to one room is frankly silly. This raises the questions to which I require answers. •What is Burn to you? Is it a sprawling ranch house? A stately manor? A sky-scraping tower? Something else, entirely? •What does that mean for thread creation? Should there be one thread for every sub-forum (that it makes sense for people to visit)? Should threads be made only by myself and those who I choose to help me, or should anyone be able to make any number of threads? My eventual hope is that this will take off and my peers and elyzia will agree that a new sub-forum is needed to keep all of the threads together (as we will need the rooms, a welcome thread, a rules thread, a suggestion thread, etc). Until then, there will be a directory in the stickies or announcement and "BGHRP" (standing for BURN Guild House Role Play) in the title of each relevant thread. What I need from you: Answers to the questions that I posed, things you liked, things you hate, statements of interest, suggestions, questions, and all manner of constructive criticism. If everyone lends a hand, we can make this happen.

So many words.
But it does seem like a good idea. I myself have no preference for roleplays, but will do those that seem like they are capable of going far. This seems like it will.
I think only a few should be allowed to create threads, if everyone would be allowed, people might make something stupid.

I am definitely interested, and I'd be willing to help if it's needed. I think there would need to be a very basic storyline, though, like the dimensions and time periods all came together, or something like that, and then you would be able to have all kinds of characters all in this one big roleplay. There doesn't necessarily need to be a story arch though, but at least a basic premise just to lay the foundation. I do agree with Samu Kimi though that there should only be a select few people that can actually start new threads relating to the RP so it doesn't become an unmanageable mess.

Yeah, I also want a small crew able to start threads, though I was thinking that it might be best if everyone could make an "[Insert name here]'s Room." Obviously, without the separate sub-forum, that one's already off of the table. Also, I already explained how all the different sorts of characters would come together.

Having used your system of RP in your guild, Matasoga, I find it quite worthwhile, and it reminds me of the easy days of RP back before everyone wanted wall o' text for just a simple reaction. Although sometimes the writing out is inconvenient, especially when I've got a situation to handle, but it can be useful for days when I have too much going on. Casual RP, if you use your own character, is a fantastic way to get to learn about others, to become friends with them, and to, sometimes, see how you would react in ways that you hadn't expected before, and with a time limit, since you want to continue and get the other person's reaction as well. Back in the old days of Gaia, CB had a lot of casual RPs like that, and that was what caused my initial love for this place. Going back to it, if on a smaller scale, really feels like coming home again. Gaia might have changed, but knowing that the bond that people used to be able to make is still attainable means that it hasn't changed that much.

I thought that it would be good for people to hear from someone that had tried it. I don't know how many other Disciples had accepted the invitations that I sent to BURN and how many kept active, but I'm glad that you decided to join us. Hopefully you'll have more than one place where the two of us (and many others) can interact together.

I would love to participate in a roleplay like this. Something this big though requires a lot of help. Help from the whole Burn crew, for example, so that the roleplay stays under control and updated. But you would also need a great number of active roleplayers who would be willing to commit to the roleplay. It depends on how big a sub-forum you intend to make it, and how many threads.
My opinion though, is that you not make an entire subforum for the roleplay. I think it would just die way too easily that way. The Zombie-Pocalypse RP was a great success, so maybe you should model the roleplay after that. Just a single thread, maybe, but have everybody include their location every time they post.
Burn, for me, isn't really just one thing. I've never really imagined anything along with it. I mostly cruise the 'Roleplay' subforums, anyway, and don't pay much attention to the rest. To answer your question, I guess, if Burn would be an actual place, it would be like a big mall-type building, because the 'Roleplay' subforum would be sort of like a theater, where you watch/read stuff, and the 'Fun Word Games' subforum kind of like an arcade.
When I think of putting different species together though, like zombies, aliens, and centaurs, I think of Mass Effect. xP I don't play it myself, but I've watched my friend play it many times.

It remains in my plans to create a thread for each room, however based on the speed at which I am getting replies, there might just be a rather general thread that would be the equivalent of the open area of such a mall (if that is what I decide upon using as a model) and create others on an as-needed basis. The idea was to create places where users could play and interact without all necessarily being part o the same conversation. Given the amount of people that may be playing, that point may be moot. I'll give it a bit more time and see.
