After the seeds meeting, Amrita had retreated to her dorm room for a bit of a rest, her fingers fidgeting with the vines that poked out of her stump of a wrist. She didn't know what to do with herself other than to stare at the dirty old ceiling, and even that was losing it's appeal very quickly. Yet as she lay there, an idea formed. An idea stemmed from several comments in the days since they came back from the Isles.

Go see Nurse Cricket - Get yourself fixed up or others will laugh! - You've got to take care of yourself too, you know - You should get fixed before we go - Wouldn't you be happier...?

She had only put it off this long to avoid bothering others. There were two scarelings in Halloween that she trusted with her corpse, and one of them barely communicated with her any more despite her attempts to always be there for him. It was getting to the point where she couldn't go through unlife without being whole again; missing her tight hand was becoming more of a hindrance than ever, not to mention how long it took her to say simple words.

Yes...perhaps now was the time to get fixed. If it was up to it, anyway; there was only one way to find out.

Pocketing two small objects, Amrita fixed her long sleeved shirt that hid her hands and the shawl that covered the gaping hole in her chest (and the crude stitching as far up her throat as possible), and finally headed out the door. Then actually finding the Plague Doctor became the next immediate problem. It wasn't where she remembered it to be, and it took a lot of wandering, texting and guessing to stumble across the door she needed to be at. At least, the one she thought she needed to be at.

"Pleeease bee the riight oonee..." She whispered wetly to the door, giving it a hopeful knock. "Maalodoore?" She said next, louder this time.

Malodore was indeed in, and the soft whisper made Luce perk up her ears and pad over to the door in curiosity.

... Ombra launched himself at the door and smacked into it headfirst.

"Ah, piccolo, I know who this is - calm yourself," Malodore informed the pup, amused; Luce took it upon herself to lay on Ombra, pinning him to the ground. With the minipets thus restrained, Malodore opened the door. "Amrita. It is good to see you... can I assist you?"

The sudden thump against the door made her somewhat uneasy; doors shouldn't thump, and the ones that did generally didn't have good things on the other side. She stood her ground though, waiting patiently for something more than the sound of a little impact; her efforts were rewarded as the door creaked open, showing the familiar form of the Plague Doctor.

"Maaal!" Amrita gasped out, her hiss of a voice dripping with relief. If Mal really was in the room, chances are that thud was it's---ah yes, there; the minipets. Adorable things! The pup must have been the one to tackle the door, seeing as it was pinned. Relief flooded through her, and she offered the good doctor a smile. "Yooouu aare lookiing weelll." All things condiered, at least; even physically, it looked much better than she did! That was at least something, right?! She hoped so, anyway.

"Iii...wass wonderrinng...iif yoou coould paatchh mee uup?" She strained to get out, the clumsy stitches in her throat shifting slightly during her struggle. Amrita stared up at it with a hopeful eye.

"Of course," it said at once; its hand had already been going for the needles and suture thread, and it pulled both out of one sleeve. "I saw you were damaged at the meeting... you, too, were on the Isles, were you not?" It hesitated, wanting to ask who injured her, but it didn't seem right to inquire.

"Sit down, please - I know there's not much here, but you are welcome to it." Indeed, there wasn't much, just a wall covered in notes, a sarchophagus whose lid was covered in assorted items, a folding chair, and a cot all but drowning in purple bedlinens. Malodore grabbed the chair with its free hand and swung it around for Amrita. "Do you wish me to numb the flesh first? Some prefer it."

Again the look of relief flooded her features, and she stepped into the room as invited, looking around at the meager furniture; minus the notes on the wall, it had about as much things as she did! It was quaint, really. The purple linens, though...those made her shiver despite herself. Poor Malodore.

"Yeess, Iii waas..." She said simply, wanting to elaborate but not wanting to take forever doing so. Lately, her keep it to yourself to avoid stressing out others just wasn't cutting it for her; she wanted to tell people what happened to her, because while she could afford to be careless with a body, many couldn't. "Thaank yoou." She rasped out, taking a seat in the folding chair given out for her.

"Nooh, thaank yoou...Iii woon't feell iit." The entire patchwork body was like a suit; tearing and mending didn't really affect her unless it damaged the skin - in this case, her fear - under it. As she assured the Plague Doctor, she unwound the shawl around her chest and throat with one hand, showing the full extent of the damage, though there was crude stitching from her chin to her collar bone; nothing further than that could be easily closed. "Ahh, aand---" She lifted her thus far unused arm - her left - to show that she had no hand; the stump itself was vine infested, but it didn't seem to be as much of a concern to her.

"Peerhaaapss Iii shoould have staaarted wiith how muuch meendiing..." Somehow, her wet, almost rasping dual voice sounded sheepish.

Malodore blinked, startled at the extent of the damage when it was revealed to it. "I can repair it - it's fortunate you are undead, or else you would have been severely inconvinienced by such a wound," it murmured, a flicker of anger darting through its mind. "Who did this to you? You... oh..." The vines brought back a surge of memory.

"Famine. You were there? I did not- I was... very distracted, there," it said, quietly. "Ah, but, I can repair this - all but the hand, I do not have any parts at the moment, though I am sure Christof does..." It leaned in, looking at the chest incision to see if any of the ribs were snapped. Its emotions were roiling - torn between sorrow and anger, but its professional calm was forcing those feelings down. For now.

"Thaaank Jaack." She agreed; though it had been an inconvenience anyway, with the speech and the needing to do things one handed. Sure she could have made it easier on herself, but---wait. Wait. Make it easier on herself? Well...it was just her and Mal here. It'd seen her before, her real self however briefly...

The only breaks in her ribs were around her sternum, which was hanging on by threads of connective tissues at this point. Malodore's distracted words, more than it's actions, almost made her regret coming here today. She had never really heard the Doctor like this before, and she certainly couldn't blame it...and yet, sadly, life had to move on no matter how much it hurt to say or think. "Iii...will aansweer eeverythiing but...doo yoou miind if Iii...uuhhh...taake thiis off fiirst?" She gestured to herself, her entire body, not really able to find better words for what she wanted. Talking - and patching up her throat - would be much easier if she wasn't trying to speak using what she had.

"Ah, si, of course," Malodore said, with a nod, immediately understanding what the vetala meant. "That will make it easier for me as well..." It was carefully assessing the damage. A few of its higher-caliber supplies would be needed, but thankfully it had some help on hand, in the form of the kobold servant Jericho had given it.

The plague doctor leaned over and knocked on the sarcophagus' side; a moment later, a small face peeked out. "Go to my old chamber and retrieve... any flesh samples still viable, additional suture thread, bonemeld clay..." It looked back at Amrita. "Yes. That will do."

The kobold servant bowed and scurried off.

"There, now... hmm." Malodore got up and opened the room's small closet, pulling out a pale grey bedsheet and laying it out on the floor. It retrieved a pillow from its own bed. "Why don't you lay here? It will keep the body stable while I work on it."

Amrita sat quiet, waiting for further instruction before she did anything else; it was a good thing too, bodies were much easier to move when you were in them! She nodded as directions were given, getting up and moving to the bedsheet that had been laid out for her. Her head rested on the pillow, her eyes closed...and the body arched before slumping back down, a ghostly grey form materializing above - and then beside - the now empty corpse.

The Vetala, free from her patchwork skin, wrapped the old shawl around her form, draping it in an odd sense of modesty though certainly there was nothing to hide. She sat beside the corpse, her disjointed feet pressed together, her separated hands holding onto her ankles, slouching forward in a very natural way; the glowing spirals shifted to focus on her body as though looking at it - and how badly it was damaged - for the first time.

"I was in Famine, but...that's not where this happened." The Vetala explained with a nod to the body, her voice a clearer version of the androgynous tones that she had before. "Well, except the vines." She added, shifting lightly in her spot; she wanted so badly to express her sympathies to the Plague Doctor, but she didn't want to upset it. Plus she was pretty sure it had heard it several times every day, which she imagined would be just as exhausting as silence.

"I'm sorry for your loss, Malodore." The need to express it won out over her hesitations, and the Vetala's eyes dimmed as she leaned forward in what was probably a bow.

Sosiqui

As fixed as can be! I think the only really intriquite thing that needs mending is her throat, since the vocal cords had been damaged; everything else can probably just be patched up easily enough.

I'm still waiting on an 'older' reference for a Vetala, but it's similar to the original, only lengthier with more gnarled, twisted limbs and turning brownish instead of flat grey.

Malodore bowed its head in acknowledgement. "Grazie... I am... coping. Moving forward, as one must. It helps to have work to do, and friends." It opened its beak in a small smile, grateful to her for bringing both things to its doorstep.

It knelt next to Amrita's body, craning its neck over to examine the damage now that the body was inert. "This looks like a stroke from a blade... a Hunter weapon?" it asked, keeping its voice calm. "I can use the bonemeld to regrow the ribs and sternum, but I may need to apply some new flesh to close the gap, here. The edges are too ragged to take stitching, so a patch would be easiest..."

It produced a set of tweezers and a magnifying glass from its sleeves, hunching over the throat wound. "I see... damage to the vocal cords, of course, esophagus... hm. This will take time. It would be easier to FEARheal... I would recommend visiting Nurse Cricket for that aspect of the work. Vocal cords are tricky things, and I don't have much experience with the fine parts of the larynx."

"Glad to hear it." Her face remained unmoving, but there was a distinct smile to her voice.

"Yup! A Hunter with two blade-things...he stuck his hand in there too." The disgust was as evident as the smile had been, the glow in her eyes brightening in agitation. "BUT I strangled him with his own scarf! He didn't die, sadly, but I have a souvenier at least." It didn't seem like enough, but it was good enough for the time being. "The hand was an accident...loose stitching." The Vetala admitted sheepishly, ducking her head down further into her slouching shoulders. She listened to Malodore explain what it would have to do to repair her, but she honestly didn't understand a lot of the words that were being thrown out. Sternum? Esophagus? Larynx? Yeah, she had nothin'.

"...Would that help? Everyone kept telling me to go to Nurse Cricket, but...I wasn't sure." Since Malodore suggested it though, perhaps she would! It's judgement on this particular subject meant more than the frantic worries of her friends; after all, Cricket wasn't the friendliest Nurse.

"Do you need any help? I can try!" Mending this damage sounded like very extensive work, especially because of all those big, alien words!

"Hah - va bene," Malodore said, grimly pleased at Amrita's tale. "We will leave our marks on them, and I do not think they can be as easily healed. And si, I can tend to most of this, but for the voice? Better to see her, indeed. I will leave that part open, so that she can heal it more easily."

A clacking of claws indicated the kobold servant's return; the creature had a small bag now. Malodore accepted the bundle and rummaged through it. "Good, good... grazie... now. The bone first." It removed a few more instruments, then tied back its sleeve, baring its forearms entirely. Then it leaned in, using some clamps to hold back the edges of the chest incision and better exposing the bone beneath. "Get out the small bits..." Carefully, it began working bone splinters free of flesh with a set of tweezers.

"Okay." Amrita nodded to it's instructions regarding Cricket; that would be fine, she'd been going around with gaping wounds for a while now, what was a little while longer? "I trust you more, though." She felt the need to add; sure Cricket was an older nurse, but her experience with the Ghost wasn't a very good one; Mal, on the other hand...she felt closer to Mal, and less likely to be frowned at forever in both form and voice.

"Have you seen Christof lately?" She inquired awkwardly; at first she had tried to stick around him in light of his destuction, but after a while she just needed to escape for her own sanity. His room was once a safe haven for her, and now it was just another place in her life that radiated hurt. Where she could she tried to help, but more often than not she just sat back and let the good Doctor do it's thing.

Malodore bobbed its head, warmed by Amrita's faith in it. "Grazie - I assure you, were I capable of handling it all myself, I would. But I know my limits, and that is also an important part of providing good care," it said, opening its beak in a smile.

Its beak closed at the mention of Christof. "I have, si... he seemed, ah. Single-minded. Though I suppose I cannot think ill of such things, as I myself doubtless seem that way to others..." It shook its head. How could it explain adequately the enormity of its task, of its need? Best not to try. "He, too, aches, and lacks avenues to explore those feelings," it said, after a long moment. Emotions really weren't its strong suit, or so it continued to tell itself - but now it had no one else to ask about such things. Only itself.

"I know..." The androgynous voice lamented, long twisted limbs moving to hold her legs. "I tried to help him when we got back...but when Calder and I told him he called us cruel...and then after that he got unresponsive. I really, really tried but then it just...hurt too much to be around him s-so...so I left. Does that make me a bad friend...?" That was when she'd run to Lizzy, and when Lizzy had let her cry it all out before she passed out. But until then she couldn't handle it; she was tired, physically and emotionally hurt, stressed out, and trying to make an unresponsive Igor work through his pain. All it made her want to do was scream, but she never did.

"And um...what kind of avenues do you need?" To Christof it seemed easy to guess, but that was something she couldn't bring herself to do even if he was hurting. After all, she really didn't like it when he was ordered around.
