In which the females ask questions.

The Firekin outpost, once just talk, has begun to formulate. To the north, on the north-northwestern border, the red pelts have begun to trickle in. They have set up a border guard, and though the Bonelands members are allowed past it on proper business and to drink from the spring, there is an eerie sort of nervousness shared by both prides.

While Gakere's motives have been question, many also speak of how wise he was in his choice. The Firekin seem to have huge abundance in addition to their larger size.

But while Gakere may have proven himself, the newest of the Umholi certainly has not, and it is now the time for answers.

Questions and Rules

If you have a question, please PM it to the mule.

If I didn't participate in other ORPs, may I still post in this one?
Of course! Anyone is welcome in this ORP

What if I don't own a Bonelands member?
You may RP with any of the allowed SoA creatures or a non-prey familiar to observe what occurs.

What if my lion decides they hate Surtak?
That's fine! There no rules against IC conflict. Just, don't take things personally if another lioness disagrees with yours. This is all just ICly.

What questions can I ask?
Anything your lioness ICly would like to know! Questions about the Firekin, where Surtak came from, why is his voice funny. Keep it PG-13, but have free reign. He may not answer every question, and if he does answer it, it may not be clear. Don't be offended by this.

Rules

  • This should go without saying, but don't mix IC and OOC! There may be IC tension in this RP, so don't take it personally.
  • Only adolescents and adults may be present at this discussion. Do not post with cubs/juveniles.
  • Posting in this RP as well as other ORPs will mean you can qualify for closed ranks and ranks with RP requirements or event-only restrictions.
  • As this is an ORP, there is no posting order, and you may post as many times as you would like.
  • Each post will get you a ticket for the following cub! You may keep him, or you may give him to a friend if you win. If you would like to give him away, you must give him to a pridal newbie. He the son of Kamal and Dina and he has several siblings. Please give a big thanks to Jovi of Shadows for providing this cub for prizes!

[ORP] A Fear of New Things

Public
Weather: Blistering hot and without wind.
Location: This discussion is being held mostly out on the savannah, with the shade of a few savannah trees nearby. But, it is not an organized discussion event and so most are caught off guard.

-

It didn't matter what they had started out talking about. It could have been a perfectly normal conversation. Then, Ulaka had opened her large mouth. Opened it, because she was frustrated, and was tired of all the excuses sent in her direction. "No. I'm sick of it."

"I feel as though you're being overreactive." The young, dark Matifa was attempting to calm the young, fiery female down. It was mostly a lost cause, but still she tried. "Maybe a drink of water and a rest in the shade will help."

"I'm not! First, Gakere lets this brown, short, funny-voiced male in and now there are behemeth's poking at our edges, just waiting to steal our hunting, too. We've had good strong males in the past, but those two? No. Surtak just pokes his nose in to make random comments. I'm over it. It's time they give us some solid answers or we kick them out."

"Ulaka." Matifa sounded frustrated now, but her eyes were on an approaching figure. "You may want to quiet," her voice was at a whisper and she dropped her eyes.

"No, let her ask questions. The short, brown, funny-voiced male will hear them. Tell the others." Surtak had slid up, unrecognized in the flurry of argument and Ulaka's loud exclamations. He stood calmiy now, eyes on the few females already present.

Hlengiwe had just arrived on the scene, having heard her sister's voice. The day was not only incredibly hot but there was no breeze to possibly enjoy. With her dark fur, she was absorbing so much heat that she basically walked around everywhere with her mouth open to help cool off. She settled in some shade near Ulaka and Matifa and called over to her sister. "Matifa, what is she going on about?" Whatever it was, it had certainly caught the attention of Surtak.

Hlengiwe didn't have any problems with the funny sounding male. She looked at her purple mark. The mark was the reason that she never judge others based on anything physical. She also felt that he wasn't a threat to them. She had yet to form an opinion on the firekin. As long as they remained friendly, she would hold nothing against them.

Being only a recent arrival, Wodi had missed out on a lot, and had only a very vague understanding that there had been some...dramatic happenings in the Bonelands of late. She had been spending far more time listening to the other lionesses than speaking, gathering as much information for herself as possible. In many ways, she was still clinging to stubborn independence, still not completely adjusted to being in a pride again.

The painted lioness was passing just close enough to hear this particular discussion take a most fascinating turn, and casually made her way over to see where it went. She had no questions to ask - yet - but she was intent on hearing all the answers.

Iyõ, though not an original member of the pride herself, had grown used to the way things were run. She had become unsettled from all the changes that had occurred recently within the pride. Although she might have thought some were not for the best, she'd kept her opinions and thoughts to herself. The golden lioness had chosen to learn to live with these things, rather than voice an opinion. So far things were not as bad as she thought. She was wary of the new lions on the border though, the large, red, desert dwellers. Whenever she'd visited the water, she always been quick, still unsure about them.

Iyõ happened to be out looking for her sister when she came across what seemed to be the beginnings of something interesting. The golden lioness nodded to herself at Ulaka's remarks, thinking the same thoughts herself. Things were different now, and perhaps it wasn't for the best.

Thoughts of her sister forgotten, Iyõ kept watch, from a distance for now, wondering what would occur.

Kapera was typically a silent creature, listening to the other's chat like background noise as she considered her own thoughts on the matter. She might not have been particularly forthcoming, but she was the sort that liked to have an opinion on things. Even if no one ever heard it. This land was her home, but before that, she had been a rogue. And she remembered old stories other prides told about the firekin. It made the haggard lioness apprehensive...

...but what made her even more apprehensive was the subject of the conversation, Surtak, suddenly appearing. He seemed calm rather than agitated, but she wasn't sure if that made her feel any less apprehensive. Her large shoulders twisted as she worked out a knot of tension. It was a nervous habit.

"It is a lot of strange things happening at once..." she trailed off, her voice low and mousish. A peculiar feat for such an otherwise large, even masculine, lioness. "I've heard old stories about these lions with red fur. They are not pleasant ones."

User ImageBuna rested in the shade of a nearby tree, but she couldn't miss hearing some of the argument that suddenly grew louder. She lifted her head and tried to figure out what was going on. What was Ulaka getting herself into this time?

Yes, Surtak was small, and Surtak talked in a foreign manner, but the lion was also one of the darker males in charge. His mane wasn't as dark as Gakere's, but his colours made Buna more inclined to trust and like him. A dark mane and dark coat usually meant a strong male after all. He didn't seem too upset over the female's behaviour either, and handled the situation gracefully as far as she could tell.

Buna sometimes hunted with Ulaka, and in most situations she sidled with her fellow huntresses without questioning the cause, but this was uncalled for. She rose and walked over to join the gaggle of spectators.

"What's going on here Ibala," she asked one of the newest Busisa to see if she had missed anything from her shaded vantage point. She had yet to learn Wodi's name so Ibala, 'speckled', would have to do for now. "Are we questioning the Abaholi now?"

Chazama was among the small gathering of lionesses, cooling herself off in the shade of a scraggily looking tree. Napping seemed to be her favorite past time, as well as avoiding any real duty that would cause her to exert too much energy. It was just hot hot hot! Not at all what the young girl was use to, and no where near as convenient. She had recently hit a large and unrelenting growth spurt, and as her mother had explained it: she had entered adulthood. How tiring! Her lack of energy could be explained by her body's final growth, but the lioness had always been lazy about most everything. Most everything. Hers ears swiveled and perked as she caught the conversation around her escalating, Ulaka's voice rising above the others. Ahh, this could get interesting.

Chazama rolled herself off the small rock she had been laying on face-up, and lazily climbed to her paws, stretching every bit of her body it seemed, before slowly encroaching on the growing gathering of females. She was surprised to find Surtak among the group, as she had not noticed his approach. "What's going on?" she managed to blurt out to those around her, wondering if they could fill her in on the situation. Still, she found herself glancing between the Umholi and the loud-mouth Ulaka, who seemed to have drawn his attention. Was someone in trouble?

It took Wodi a moment to even realize she'd been spoken to, as she was focused on the conversation and the brown lioness didn't use her name, but soon enough, she realized that she was being looked at. Expectantly. She had been addressed. "Wodi," she supplied, twitching her tail. "We are, apparently."

"I've heard stories, too," the Busisa added, "Of violence and slavery." She did not particularly care what had been done to her dead ancestors - they were dead, after all, so why should she? - but strangely, it was more relevant now than it ever had been. If nothing else, surely caution was merited.

She had settled in the shade alongside some of her peers, quiet at first as she listened to those around her with twisting ears. As far as she was aware there had been no trouble since the red giants had taken up their outpost and until they did something to prove otherwise, she felt comfortable with it. Perhaps it was because she had been a rogue and she was used to strangers passing her by.

Perhaps to these others such things were scary and worrying.

To Chazama she said: "There is upset about the red lions and the one called Surtak."

She fidgeted a moment before speaking out. "But they are just stories. I have told stories many a time to young ones and each and every time I change and exaggerate to make them more exciting. Stories are just that. We need facts."
PostPosted: Tue May 08, 2012 11:32 am

Buna nodded to the Busisa. Wodi? What kind of name was that? Ah, it was to be expected perhaps. Naming traditions were different among rogues. Buna's mother had named her a nonsense name for some reason, and she had often wished for a nickname with a meaning, like the Busisa usually got after a while. She had never said this out loud, and no one tried to rename her since she was born in the pride. It was just one of those things... She would make sure her future cubs wouldn't have to deal with it, however. They would each get a proper name with a proper meaning.

Buna did not like what some of the Busisa had to say about the red ones. Stories... Violence... Slavery? It didn't sound good at all. Since no one made a move to ask Surtak anything she decided to be the first one. He had come from the rogue lands too, and he might have heard or seen something.

"Have you encountered these red warriors before they came here?" she asked.

She had grown since the first appearance of the red lions on her pride's lands, though matured, perhaps not, and as always, Orabela found herself willing and ready to throw herself into a gathering of any sort and provide her own opinion. Whether that opinion was ever useful was debatable, but Ora figured that everyone had a right to know what it was before judging for themselves.

Lifting a golden paw, Ora brushed her striped head tuft out of her face, honing in on the growing crowd with eagle-bright eyes, dark nose twitching curiously as her ears picked up voices, loud and hushed and neutral all around. It was getting to be too much intrigue and too few answers, and the little adolescent lioness, finally a little larger than a large juvenile, padded her way over to join the party.

There were a bunch of lionesses gathered around Surtak and the beginnings of a debate. Ora sidled up beside her sister, peering curiously and, she hoped, discreetly around the group, noting each lioness in attendance. If nothing else, doing so would give her some time to hear more before jumping into the conversation.

It didn't take long for her to figure out what was happening, and even as she did, she couldn't help but think of that first encounter she had had with the red giants out by the waterhole. There was that one who had thought she was spunky, or something. Ora almost smiled to herself, then. As if anyone thought she was anything but.

Idly, she glanced toward the new Umholi, watching Surtak with silent curiosity. She kind of liked him, though she knew there were others that disagreed. She kind of liked the funny voice, and he wasn't so little. Not compared to Ora, anyway, and she didn't mind short individuals. To think otherwise would be hypocritical.

"Those big red lions leave us well enough alone, don't they?" Ora said, half turning to Matifa and half talking to no one in particular. Sometimes, she just had to hear her own voice before any deeper thought process began.
PostPosted: Tue May 08, 2012 4:37 pm

The sound of Surtak's voice, though not apparently full of anger, had scared Ulaka's mouth shut. It was clamped tight, and with ears pinned to her skull, she made her way into the crowd of gathering lioness' as though she had said nothing at all.

Surtak watched her go, but said nothing about the fact Ulaka would not man up to her own concerns. Instead, his eyes turned to the rest of those gathering. His sides twitched as a fly attempted to land on his back, but he was already shaking his head towards Buna.

"No." His answer held no hesitation. "Like you, I have heard only stories."

Matifa felt a rigid shoulder bump into her side and glanced over to find Orabela, proud and bold, at her side. She offered her bird-colored sister a soft smile before whispering, "They seem to have so far." But the red-pelts had not been present for long. She was going to open her mouth to speak softly again when Surtak's voice rose once more.

"Our stories are not of slavery and violence, but of overthrowing a ruling kulukadok. I believe you call these 'gods'."

"Will they always leave us well enough alone?" Matifa quickly asked of Orabela. Her voice was heightened by her rush to speak before other voices drowned her out, and those nearby would have been able to hear her. "What if they decide they want more than water?" What if they did take slaves?

Hlengiwe was close enough that she heard what Matifa said to Orabela. She understood her sister's concern but they would have to accept the decisions that had already been made. It was not right to question Gakere. He had never been mean to her and always seemed fair, so she was inclined to believe in him.

"Don't worry Matifa. We just have to be sure to not get too comfortable around them." Her real worry was about her mother. Njalo had yet to make an appearance and was usually friendly to everyone that she met. She would not have the ones that she loved hurt. She offered a reassuring smile to her sisters before nuzzling them both.

Hlengiwe still wanted to ask Surtak a question thought. "Do you trust them Surtak? The red pelt lions?" Even though he had not been born to them, she was one that valued the opinion of others. She was one who wanted to learn everything there was to know to make an informed decision instead of jumping in head first with nothing to back her.
