THE BEGINNING. Aurora Borealis.
If her Kin had a word for the phenomena, Follow My Voice was still in the dark. Figuratively and Literally. The moon had already risen over the swamp, thick and humid with the promise of an early summer. Her neck craned skyward, eyes following the twisted, daylight colors through mangrove boughs and across the horizon. What a curious thing. Any Kin of sound and realistic mind would blame the colorful mist on distant clouds, starlight and the will of the Motherfather, but Song was no sound thinker. It was of little surprise when the doe stumbled over slick rocks and broke clumsily through fallen trees in search of the rainbow in the dark. Quite uncharacteristic was her lack of fear. The dark was sinister in hue and milieu alike. The absence of bird songs and the low hiss of night walkers chilled her to the bone, but still she pressed onward, shaking ill-fated webs from her horns and humming to break the silence.
Her tone wavered with every shadow. Song paused only to ensure the carefully tied wreathes of marigold and twine remained around her neck -- gifts for the otherkin. Finding the garlands right where they should be, she considered turning around. She'd yet to meet a ghost. What if they didn't like her offerings? Would she be cursed? Or worse...
Night be damned. She simply had to find the birthplace of that mysterious light... perhaps it was a bridge to another place. Would she find the spirits she sought just beyond those ethereal lights?
Or something else entirely?

Out There found his sleep disturbed, and when he opened his eyes he instantly understood why. The swamp was bathed in mystic light! How exciting! He craned his neck upwards to determine the source and saw rivers of light gently twisting through the sky. Excellent. But where were they coming from? Out There could not just ignore this mysterious, unusual, definitely-not-normal event and go back to sleep. He stood up, shook off the last of his drowsiness, and started moving opposite the flow of the light, heading upstream. The buck moved quickly, knowing that whatever was going on, it probably wouldn't wait up for him. His eyes were fixed on the sky and he kept tripping on roots. He was paying absolutely no attention to where he was actually going. So it was no surprise when he stumbled right into a...kin? "I'm sorry!" Out There apologized quickly, hurrying around the kin he had run into with little more than a glance. "But I must investigate this! Bye!"

Song's size had it's disadvantages. While being skinny and short-legged meant she could creep her way into burrows and fox-holes with little effort, it also put her at greater risk for tumbling. Awkward half-steps regained her footing rather quickly, but it took a moment for the doe to realize what had happened. The brown buck gave her little afterthought, but she was absolutely enamored by what he had managed.
He was following the lights, as well? How delightful! Perhaps he'd be interested in traveling with her? At the very least, this like-minded company would settle her nerves.
"Oh -- w-wait! Are you going to the end of the lights, as well?!" Song quickened her step, hopping over mossy rocks and the occasional sleeping creature, careful of the tips of her hooves. She didn't want to startle any lingering caiman...

Out There slowed down and looked back, noting that the creature he had run into had been a doe. She seemed quite determined to follow him, in any case.
"Yes," he said. "The Tru--eeeeerrr," Suddenly he recalled he had forgotten his usual costume of mud and leaves. It wouldn't do to ruin his secret identity, would it? "--I'm, uh, always...sworn to...investigate this sort of thing? Atanyrate, if you want to come with me, you'll have to move a bit quicker than that! Magic lights in the sky wait for no kin!"

Spry!
Song quickened her pace, and although she wasn't the swiftest of kin, managed to keep a good leg or two between herself and the stranger. If it weren't for the ethereal display above she wouldn't have been able to make out the dappling on his hide or the fierce look of genuine determination upon his face. He was a self-assured creature, no doubt about it.
He would make a fine leader.
"So, wai -- no, don't wait, hurry on... but, what's your name? I -- I can't rightly follow if you... you're name leads to... folly!" The pale doe managed between huffs and puffs, eyes darting from the path below to the lights above. Of course he hadn't asked her to follow, but being a curious and scrutinizing doe, she felt obligated to inspect him. 'Let it be something steadfast...'

Out There crashed recklessly through the swamp, paying little heed to his companion. He heard something about names, though, so he bellowed in return, "My name is Out There! Like! The truth! Is! Out! There!"
