QUESTLINE: A Source of Water
"Wait wait, stop, wait a second!"

You pause for a second as a Famine clansmember apprehends you. You notice they are standing in a very very large ditch, carrying a shove. There is nothing in the ditch however, as you peer down into the six-foot deep expanse.

"Okay, here let me explain." She points downwards into her little project. "I am trying to create a reservoir, you know, of water. So that we can build farms again." She scowls. "Don't give me that look, it is important to cultivate as much as it is to collect. Now, I need a few good sources of water, I'm hoping once we get enough supplies to create some piping down into the water."

Did she mean, literally take from a water reserve? Well, hopefully not.

OOC

- Roll a 100-sided dice and match your dice roll to the results below. Keep on rolling until you find the perfect water reserve. You complete the quest once you have done so!

- 1-20: You reach an area that seems to be particularly wet, close to Amityville, but there also seems to be an awful stench nearby, probably not...
- 21 - 40: You head into the Weeping Forest, but only manage to get yourself lost, though you could swear you hear a trickling noise
- 41 - 60: You see a small pond close to Amityville, but it is filled with Minipet life. Maybe not....
-61 - 80: You see a well close to the Weeping Forest and hurriedly rush towards it. It is empty...
- 81 - 100: At last, deep in the Weeping Forest, you see a well. As you look deep into it, and pull the bucket upwards, you realize the water is not only fresh, it is rather delicious as well! This will be perfect! Water Reserve Found

"Wait, wait, stop, wait a second!"

Mengyao Miao really wished he had not stopped. In fact, he wished he were not in this Jack forsaken place at all, and had, in fact, not wanted to do anything but sit and relax.

Apparently that was not about to happen anytime soon. With a grudging sigh, Mengyao turned slowly where he stood, peering down at the horsewoman in the ditch. She was holding a shovel in one hand, and the ditch was at least as tall as Mengyao was, perhaps even a few inches taller.

He wondered what on earth she was doing, but it seemed he would not have to wonder for very longer. When she spoke, she did so extraordinarily forcefully and Mengyao found himself roped into doing something he did not particularly want to do.

Well. If he had to suffer, he was going to drag someone with him, at least. Which was why, a few moments later, he had caught up with a certain someone and was now propelling her towards the Weeping Forest.

"Come, Lan dearest, how about you assist me with this little...request I have been given?"

Read: I don't really want to do this so you have to come with me.

She had been reading. Apparently, a few scroll and book enthusiast had saved some by sheer luck, and Lan had hunted one down to have the chance to read what could be one of the last of her kind's works. She knew many works by heart, she'd had them memorized because she'd loved them so, (and it suited a wife to know the more classic of their works), but she hadn't been able to transcribe anything yet. It was not her duty, not her task.

So when Mengyao had accosted her, Lan had unceremonious dropped her scroll and glared at him. Request indeed, she was betting he wanted to have her work. Thankfully her makini was faithfully following her, and the horsewoman sighed. "Every debt must be paid Mengyao, and you do know how I will call it in at my convenience." As he told her what they were supposed to be doing, she frowned.
"This is.... a rather idiotic plan, stealing water."

Mengyao did not really care in the slightest that he had interrupted Lan from her reading - though perhaps he should have, considering that she gave him a disgruntled expression to match the heavy sigh that escaped her lips.

"Debts can be forgiven," he replied easily, and turned to smirk at her, the corners of his mouth curling upwards with amusement.

"And my dearest Lan, it is not as if I planned to go and steal water, but I'm afraid I have no choice in the matter."

He was neither pulling her, nor pushing her anymore as they trudged deep within the Weeping Forest (internally Mengyao was making small curses at every ounce of dirt to come across his sweeping robes), but this was mostly because he knew he would not need to. Lan would come with him, and he was quite a bit grateful for it.

Even if he would never admit that out loud.

When he reached the center of the woods and the well within it, Mengyao turned towards Lan with a knowing smile, slightly a smirk. He folded his hands into his sleeves.

"Shall we, then?"

Debts can be forgiven.. true. Very true. She also asked his opinion on things often enough so 'debt' was a touch subjective if she really wanted to push it. but the need to steal water had her frowning. "No choice...." she looked for his fan. "Someone isn't holding your fan hostage are they?" It was an honest question, someone might have then it to get him moving. And him without his fan was almost like a crime.

Mengyao was part horseman, part fan, she knew this very well.

Still she would walk by him and help him. He was a friend. Though she didn't quite like to say it. He was an a** but he was an honest a**, and that was far better than pandering she got from some. At the edge of the forest she looked at him then at her dress. "If this gets soiled the debt will be paid with a new outfit, I hope you realize this." Stepping in she smiled, "though, if it comes from you at least I'll know it will be either flattering or, new bedding for my makini." As she walked down a path she felt the wetness just as she heard it.

A squish. Making a quick face she lifted her dress, edges moist. Soaking wet moss and- "Augh. No. There is water but- no. Mengyao we are leaving. We are leaving right now. this place is terrible." A sniff of the air and another face. "and it reeks worse than a famine mule who hasn't bathed."

"You will not get your dress dirty, stop your worrying," said Mengyao airily, waving his fan in a noncommittal fashion towards Lan. He was not fanning her, but rather gesturing with it instead - something that she was probably quite used to at this point. "And no," he added, with a roll of his eyes and a very undignified snort. "No one is holding my fan hostage. As you can see, it's right here, and it's quite well, thank you."

Traipsing through the woods was not exactly the most ideal of situations, especially when the robes and clothing they were both wearing was not exactly made to do such a thing. Mengyao cast a glance over his shoulder at Lan and said, "I have not the faintest idea of what constitutes good clothing for a female, so I'm afraid you're rather at a loss in that area."

She was starting to turn about now, but Mengyao's fingers found her elbow and grasped her arm, pulling her forward once more. "Now now, my dear Lan, we cannot have you abandoning someone in the middle of the woods without returning with at least some sort of water in return. Come now, let us keep going, old friend."

She would dirty her dress and it would be his fault. All of it. Things were just easier when Lan could blame him. Storming her way out of the brackish waters and moss and jack knew what else, she gave Mengyao an angry glance then...resignation. She'd not run out and she's not just... leave him here. "You fan should be left at camp." She muttered shaking him off.

"If we find the water what then? Do we... get buckets and ferry it back and forth? Seems like a lot of work." A tap of her fingers to her chin. "It would be better if we had some pets do it I think. Oh, wouldn't it be darling? A little line of makini with buckets and bowls going back and forth? I think it would adorable." If a bit of animal cruelty.

Sadly her walk led to a simliar place and she coughed. "I hate this forest Mengyao. I hate it and it's stupid-" A cry of frustration as water soaked into her shoe.
"I hate it."

Even if Lan dirtied her dress, Mengyao had no intention of getting her a new one. She was capable of doing that herself - just as she was capable of fetching water herself.

Even if she was giving him a dirty look in the process.

"I should think not," he said, holding the fan closer to him as though she would try and take it from him. "This is my personal property and it can come with me wherever I wish it to."

Then he smiled at her, serene and calm, despite the fact that she was snarking at him. However, she was stumbling again, and Mengyao gave a sigh, reaching out towards her.

"Come on," he said, not unkindly, and helped her forward a few steps, out of a patch of mud and water. "It is a rather rotten place, I'm afraid, but if we leave without what we came for, we'll just be sent back in again, and neither of us want that."

She opened her mouth to say something, then snapped it shut. Oh he didn't need to hear her badgering him. Nor, did she need to give him any more excuses to tease her or prod her. His help however, was appreciated. She couldn't sass him after he helped.

Clever Mengyao, clever.

"..Thank you. That was most-" she looked back, grimacing, "-unpleasant. Hopefully we will have better luck?" She smiled a bit, just happy to be out of the damp earth, though her shoes would definitely need a cleaning. "You are right though. If we do fail... augh. My couldn't we just..send a minipet to do it." Her question was answered as they walked by a scareon eating what looked to be a corrividus.
"Oh." A trickle of water could be heard but just barely under the crunch of bones. Not that it helped. ".....I wish would could send a minipet for this."

He had won, and he knew it, but Mengyao refrained from saying anything, instead casting a glance over his shoulder at Lan, a smile on his face. It was bordering on a smirk, but he held it back, instead adopting an expression of innocence.

"Next time, perhaps, we should bring some minipets with us," sighed Mengyao, and grasped Lan's arm again, pulling her along - though not roughly. He stepped over a fallen log, and then lifted his hands to help her across it as well. Silent for a moment, he asked - in a casual tone - "How are you faring so far?"

Lan would one day wipe that smirk from his smug face, but not this day. This day, she would content herself with finding water and then calling it quits. The help over the log was just as when he steadied her in the wet earth. Needed, yet unsaid. "I am fairing... alright. It will be better once we are done with this task." She ignored his face, trying to mask her own. "Other then that I am... well. As one can be really."

The snap of broken underbush as he head whipped over, sucking in a breath at the sight of it. "Of thank the ancestors. Maybe we can finally be done here." Striding over she waited for Mengyao to catch up before tossing the bucket down...
only to hear it clatter.
".......You have got to be kidding." She gave her friend a look like it was his fault, "What kind of well doesn't have water? This is..augh. This is a terrible place."

He couldn't help but tease her; it was part of his nature, part of why he liked her as much as he did. Lan was just so very easy to tease, and she gave it back just as well; hence the fact that he rather enjoyed their..."friendship," for lack of a better term. Mengyao could not say that they were enemies, since that was not true, but they bickered and squabbled as siblings did, or friends who did not mind arguing with one another.

"I know what you mean," he said lightly, and stepped over to the well with Lan, tucking his hands into his sleeves. "This is not an easy place to become accustomed to, I have discovered."

There was a loud clang. Mengyao could not help wincing a little.

"...ah. Yes. Well, that seems to be a slight problem, now doesn't it? I have not heard of a well that does not produce water, but it seems to me that we must keep moving, else we'll never get out of this infernal place."

If they had been siblings, they probably would have driven each other over the edge a long time ago. It was much better that they were friends, less chance of them boiling over into true anger or resentment. That was something Lan honestly would rather do without. Still, her fingers dancing along the edge of the well, he pondered throwing his fan down there.

But then realized he'd get fussy.

Lan felt that a fussy Mengyao was not worth the small amusement it would provide.

"It's obviously broken, just like half of this wretched place." Her hand drew back and arms crossed. Broken and shattered, just like them. Appropriate. "Maybe... in time... we will be able to go back?" Walking to move along and possible just wander aimlessly, there was an echo as she stepped over a small mound. a tap of her foot and the echo resounded again.

Moving, she bent over brushing away the dirt to find a handle. Pulling, the wooden lid came up with a pop.
".........." A rope and wiggled, the sound of water.
"You try it."

"This is Halloween," replied Mengyao, with a disdainful look around at their surroundings. "Everything here is either broken, or will be broken within the short future it doubtlessly has. Wretched is perhaps a good term for it, as you said - or awful, horrible. Anything similar to those is probably the most accurate description."

There was a small pop and a gurgle of water. Mengyao twisted around to look down at Lan, his dark gaze first looking at what she was doing, and then back up to her face.

"...why me."

Indeed, it was a wretched place. Just why Lan wasn't keen on being taste tester. "You pull be out here to find water and I found some. I also opened this well. So, it seems only fair you try the water."
Seeing that he wasn't about to drink it, the horsewoman sighed, relented and tried it herself. The water was cool, refreshing. Smirking, she stood and made her way back to the camp.
"It's fine. not let us rid ourselves of this place." She looked to her shoes. "And clean. "
