She could go to the pridal grounds of her lineage. But she knew that even if she did, there would be no big welcome involved. She may know her royal bloodline, but it didn't count for anything.
There were lions and lionesses who were higher than her, and she wouldn't be able to deal with it. She was a princess by nature, and no one would take that away from her. That was why she sat in the blazing heat, stretched out in the tall grass and waiting for something to come close to the watering hole. She had established herself in youth as a great hunter, but age brought laziness, and Maati would go a few days without food if something didn't come to her first.
Maybe it was the warm sun, or the soft grass, but she soon found herself struggling to stay awake, eyes drifting shut every moment she was off-guard. With the sound of insects chirping, the soft churn of the water a mere foot or two away, and the silence that pressed in around her, she was lulled into a nap, one which she would come to regret.
No sooner had her eyes shut that she heard a noise. Perking up, nearly leaping from her cover, she stared at the gazelle and watched, in horror, as he stared right back and took off.
Forget laziness! Her stomach let out a menacing growl as she took chase, mere inches from her meal before her own hunger threw off her speed. She could only watch and whine as it escaped her, a roar of frustration escaping her lips.
