Saturday was a nice day. Why? Because every Saturday the little coffee house that Nerissa worked at would make fresh cookies. OH! She loved the smell of the cookies as she entered the small shop. She was so lucky to get the weekend job when it opened up. She only worked for a few hours in the morning each weekend day, which let her have the afternoons all to herself. Today Nerissa had been shooed from the kitchen area twice now. Once for sneaking a spoonful of cookie dough, and the second time for wandering around and sniffing the air while going MMMMMM. It annoyed the cook, but in a fun and amusing away. Still, she was certain not to push it and make the other too angry at her. So, in order to appease the cook, Nerissa had donned her full uniform for the day. Normally she left off her name tag, because it just seemed a tiny bit too much. Bey hey...it soothed the growlyness of the cook. Plus it netted her a free chocolate chip cookie. Nerissa happily moved from one small table to another, wiping them down with a lemon scented cleaning solution while waiting for some of the slow morning visitors to wander into the little coffee shop.

Saturday was a day for work. It was a day for studying.... That's why Marcus fled the house to go get a few supplies. The longer he was away, the longer he had to himself and his thoughts. And by no means did he just jet out of the house to not get those supplies. He was one of the first to shuffle in to the art store to grab a few of the essentials. The red head ended up waddling out of the store with paint, charcoal, and a new canvas. But what to do now? Not really time to get started on his new work, but maybe a stroll. By the time he reached the end of the street, the red head was already tired. The familiar bandana that he wore almost daily now slipped to his forehead, acting as a sweatband and leaving his hair at the mercy of the wind. Marcus found himself scooting into the nearest place he saw. Probably out of thirst or hunger but he found himself in a coffee shop. Marcus very noisily found a place to set his stuff, taking in the rich aroma of the shop. The shop was nice, even the workers had nice uniforms. He smiled to himself, looking up at the menu. It took him a while to decide what to order, thought he never came to a conclusion. "Excuse me." He spoke up, looking for a worker who wasn't busy. "Do you by chance have any recommendations?" He now was looking at the blue haired girl hopefully.

The sharp and clear sound of the entry bell ringing caught Nerissa's attention. She always did adore bells. Holding a cleaning rag in one hand and the spray bottle in the other she smiled as she watched the red head sort of noisily find himself a seat. She wandered over to the counter and placed the things she was holding onto the counter top. Of course,s he had plenty of time to do that, and straighten out a few things behind the register before the red head would speak up.
Since the other girl working the front of the cafe with him was busy cleaning out one of the coffee brewers, she was the one that wandered over to Marcus. "Hmm. A recommendation? I'd recommend the white hot chocolate with a side of chocolate chip cookies." She responded with a fairly bright smile reaching her eyes. "Cookies are fresh and were just made this morning. I've always personally preferred the hot coco over the coffee too, but we have a fantastic vanilla roast that works nicely with a cinnamon cream!"

The blue haired girl's bright smile let Marcus relax. It reassured him that she would give him the best of the things on the menu and not necessarily the most expensive. "Thank you," he squinted to read the girl's name tag. "Nerissa. They all sound really good." A warm cookie sounded nice right about now. "I think I'd like the vanilla roast. And the cookies of course."
He made a move for his wallet, smoothing back his hair out of habit, trying to get his mane back in line. He checked to make sure he had enough to cover his items, then tried to make small talk with the worker. "The uniforms sure are interesting." He smiled as he pulled at his wallet. "What do you think of it?" He side stepped to lean on the counter to chat while not obstructing any possible incoming customers.

As Marcus would make his choice, Nerissa pulled a little pink pad from her apron pocket and jotted down his order. She shifted her balance onto one foot, causing her hip to jut out slightly while she wrote. "Cookies and coffee it is. Did you want the Cinnamon cream in it?" She asked him while giving her pencil a little twirl over her fingertips. It was nice having someone come in and asking her for some suggestions. Usually she only got the same customers who always ordered the same things.
When Marcus would comment on her uniform, Nerissa dropped a hand down to her hip and tugged at the tie of her apron. "They aren't too bad. Pinks not much my color but it's cute I suppose. I think the heart shaped name tags are sort of cliche though." She glanced down at her's and shook her head a small bit. "I wish I was allowed to wear my high heel boots though, I think they would make my uniform a bit more stylish, but the manager says they are a tripping hazard. I think she says it only because she knows she couldn't pull off wearing heels all day." Nerissa jokingly carried on in conversation for a moment longer. "Okay then. let me go get you your coffee and cookies. I'll be right back, eh?"

Marcus ran his hands through his mane of red hair. "Cinnamon cream would be great." He smiled, watching her take the notes on her pad. He couldn't really tell if she wrote out the whole word, or just wrote in short hand as many waiters and waitresses do. He pulled his eyes back, not wanting to seem nosy in front of the girl and the people that were enjoying their coffee. It was a really lovely atmosphere after all. The smell of coffee and cookies were soothing.
The heart shaped name tag with his server's name was a hard thing to miss. "It may be cliche, but it goes well with the uniform." He'd add cute, but maybe not around a practical stranger. She didn't ever know his name. "Maybe you could suggest different colors, along with those stylish boots." The boots would be fashionable, but they may see an increase in perverts who want to see the eye candy. Well, business was business... "I don't see how anyone could be in those things for more than a minute." He laughed with a crooked half smile. "Is it alright if I wait at my table?" He pointed back to his things as Nerissa went to get the coffee, making his way to his haven of art supplies.

Nerissa's head gave a small bob, causeing the curls of her blue hair to sweep back and forth against her cheeks while she added the cream note to her pad. Marcus continued on about the uniform, which of course only made her smile more. Idle chit chat was a perk to this job. She wasn't rushed around to be efficient here, as in some other coffee houses. Here she was encouraged to be friendly and welcoming. It was great when you got a good customer, and tedious when you got one of the ones that only complained or hit on you.
"I could, but the owner is really attached to this look. I think it reminds her of when she was young, it kind of has a fifty-ish feel to it. And honestly, they aren't as bad as you would think with the right sole cushions inside." With a small flip of her foot Nerissa kicked back her prim looking white tennis shoes, then wove her way through the store and towards the kitchen doors. "Sure! Make yourself comfy. I'll be right back!" She cheerfully called over her shoulder before vanishing between the double swinging doors.
In back she retrieved a small half cup sized container that had the cinnomon cream she had mentioned to Marcus. This was yet another thing she loved about this place. If there was a way to do it themselves, the owner preferred it that way. The cream for coffee was whipped fresh every morning, some had spices in it, some had a little less sugar. But all smelled so good every time she opened the small fridge to get one of the containers out. It was sooooo hard to resist just casually poking her finger into the mix and taking a teeny taste...but that would have been unhygienic. Nerissa carried the cream out behind the counter and placed it on a small pink tray before pouring a cup of coffee into a small white mug. Nerissa added a matching cookie plate to the tray and carefully arranged half dollar sized cookies in a fist sized mound to the center. Expertly she picked up the tray one handed and made her way through the chaotically placed tables to reach Marcus.
"Here we are. Anything else I can get for you?" She asked as she placed the tray down on the table. "Coffee is free refills by the way, so if you want more just give me a little wave." She added with a small wink of her eye. "We prefer giving small cups of coffee out, as it means the drink doesn't get too cold before your done with it."

In the time it took his waitress to get his order to him, Marcus was already looking through his things. The paint was placed neatly on the table, gathered in some sort of arrangement that Marcus liked. His charcoal was next to it, pack open with his head in a medium sized sketchbook. He looked from his supplies to be greeted by Nerissa's smiling face, hot coffee, and warm cookies. Somehow, this moment was just amazing. How he would want to feel when he was older and married. He shook his head. This place was getting to him already. "Thank you. It smells so wonderful." He put down his sketchbook and placed a cookie to his lips with great pleasure. It was simply delicious.
He cleared the table of his mess to accommodate the tray of coffee and cookies. The coffee was the next he would try. He took in the aroma and took a sip. It was warm and sweet, just as he expected. The cinnamon cream did wonders to it. He took another sip as he settled in looking at his waitress. "Ah, this is just wonderful. Thank you so much!" She smiled at the mention of free refills. "I guess I'll just be staying longer than I expected." He laughed, dismissing Nerissa's small wink, setting his eyes on the floor. "I'll be sure to call. Don't worry." He fumbled with his sketchbook before taking another bite out of a cookie and sip of his coffee.

Nerissa's eyes were drawn to the variety of artist tools scattered over the table. She'd had old people come in with newspapers. Young people with books and homework. Teens and young adults with various laptops and electronic gadgets. But the amount of artists she couldn't even count on one hand. "Oh no need to thank me. This is why i get paid." She chirped cheerfully to all the gratitude she was getting. If Marcus had been an older customer she may have mentioned leaving his thanks in a nice tip, but Nerissa only used those lines on customers that frequented the place daily. The ones that knew she wasn't really serious and was only teasing them. When Marcus would remark about staying longer, she couldn't help but give a small laugh. "The boss prefers that actually. This is one of the few places that likes customers to take their time and relax, rather then the quick in quick out routine of other cafes."
When Marcus would drop his gaze away and reassure her that he'd call if needed, she took that as a sign to move along. With a happy smile and a bob of her blue haired head, Nerissa returned to her place at the coffee bar counter and resumed polishing the already gleaming wood. Every so often she would glance up, checking to make certain Marcus was still undisturbed, or to watch the shadow of a person walking past the front window of the place. Perhaps she should ask him about what he drew?

After a while of busying himself flipping through his drawings, he settled on a new page. He took a bite of a cookie and another sip of his coffee that was starting to run low. In a few minutes he had sketched out the plate of cookies and his now empty cup of coffee. He wanted to finish his sketch before he called her back for a refill. Once done, he looked around having been so absorbed in his work. "Um..." he scanned the room for his waitress, setting down his sketchbook and wiping off his dirty hands. "Nerissa!" He spotted her, giving her a warm smile.
The red headed boy waved her over eagerly with dirty hands, still beaming. It was probably the coffee in his system that made him feel rather bubbly at that point. When she reached him, he made his request clear. "I'd like a refill please." He grabbed a cookie and nibbled on it as he looked at her. He hoped he wasn't bothering her or annoying her in any way.

While he busied himself with his sketching, Nerissa tended to her duties. She always put forth some effort to at least keep partly busy even during slow times. She wiped down the counter. She rearranged the flowers in their vases. She refilled the little baskets with assorted butters and jams. All of which was really just busy work. When her customer would call out her name, Nerissa set down some coffee mugs she was wiping out for any possible stray dust motes and wandered her way over to him.
"Anything I can help you with?" Ah! The coffee. With a small grin, she held up her finger in a 'wait a moment' gesture, then quickly returned to the counter. Nerissa returned moments later with the hot pot in one hand. Leaning forwards, she carefully refilled his mug and glanced at the sketchbook to see what he had drawn. "Wow...you just drew that? Your really good." She noted with a degree of admiration.

"It's nothing really." He almost blushed. He did like comments on his work. He wasn't the best with constructive criticism, but it helps. He did his best to learn from his mistakes and that's how he got so far. Now he wanted to be more impressive, but hopefully his idea was in a subtle way. He watched as the girl poured the coffee with a small smirk.
"Nerissa, if it isn't too much of a bother, could I ask you when you go on break?" The red haired boy flipped to his next page, sketching something secret already. He didn't really look up from his sketch as he asked the question, or even as he continued. "It would be nice if you could join me for a minute." He smiled, glancing up before scribbling back on the paper.

Nerissa paused as she tilted the coffee pot back upwards. Was he... hitting on her? Well it wasn't uncommon for someone to ask her that sort of question, it usually tended to be the old guys that she could just laugh off and smile at. They were sweet things that just liked feeling younger by flirting with a pretty girl, she knew they were never serious. Nerissa's eyes blinked twice at Marcus as she tried to think of a real nice way to explain how she really didn't do the whole 'dating' thing. Nerissa managed a small smile though for him. "I've still got like two hours left of my shift. If your still around...well I could use a moment to sit down and rest my feet before heading home." She decided to at least give him that

Did she possibly think he was hitting on her? Of course his intention would come out wrong. He was nothing but a strange redheaded customer to her. He looked over at the time, gauging how long he could stay out without his parents getting on his case. "I'm not sure if I'll be around by then but...." He looked back at his sketchbook. "I'll let you know." He chuckled to himself as if it were her who had asked him for some of his time. He shook his head, taking a sip from his cup and eyeing the girl for a second before beginning to scribble down in the book.

As Marcus would take his time answering, Nerissa just allowed her grin to widen some. Silly wabbit. This girl wasn't a bowl of tricks! Okay...maybe her thought was a touch out of line, but it was amusing to her at least. When Marcus would state he'd see, she accepted that with a nod. "Course. I understand. I mean, if we had some good music on in here, or a television it'd be easier to hang out that long." She said with a laugh as she wandered back to her work station.
For her, time would pass relatively slowly. There was a steady trickle of customers who came to order coffee and some treats of course. From time to time she glanced up to smile faintly at Marcus. During one of her wanderings around to refill patrons coffee cups, she paused to speak. "Y' know...tomorrows my day off. I like to hang out by the doughnut shop near to the park. They have free wi-fi there that I can tap into and still enjoy being outside. If you need to go you could always check for me there..."
