It should be the least of her concerns, really. What did one teddy bear mean, in the grand scheme of things? For that matter, what did thirty plushies mean? The dorms were deserted, save for a couple of hunters on patrol, and the insanity creatures. To be fair, the dorms were, as they'd been told, the most infested, so she had a legitimate reason to be here, didn't she?

A reason that was most definitely not related to reclaiming her old possessions, such as one teddy bear named Mister Cuddles, or her christmas gifts from her friends.

The corridors, at the very least, were empty today, though Reine still kept on guard. The Insanity creatures were wispy, somewhat sneaky, too, they could just pop out of nowhere. She wasn't going to take a chance.

Oh, speak of the devil, something was right on schedule. She'd just reached Room 125, her hand on the doorknob, when one of the monsters crawled up and bit at her ankles. With a shriek she kicked it away, keeping her back against the door; it was just a small one, comparatively small, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt.

The creature threw itself at her again with a snarl, this time aiming for her neck. Instinctively she swatted out at it with her hand, managing to scatter it for a moment before it reformed. This time she attacked with Alynthe, which worked significantly better- the creature growled and backed away a little.

One more quick blow and the creature melted away into nothing. Reine swore she heard the creepy whispers again, the voices that were saying something, but something she couldn't make out, it was so annoying. They could, at the very least, be decent enough to speak up, what was their deal, really?

How long were they going to be around- how long would it take for the hunters to clear out the infestation? These were, if she understood it right, the remnants of horsemen. Just because they'd lost their home didn't mean they could barge into someone else's.

With the first creature dealt with, at least, Reine unlocked her door and stepped into her room, for the first time in-- how long had it even been?

He was there, he was still there, intact, Sitting on her bed with his arms held open. Reine almost teared up at the sight- someone had been waiting all this time for her to come home. The life trainee ran to her bed and leapt into the bear's open arms-- only to have a sneezing fit, her eyes watering from all the dust that had accumulated-- oh Cuddles, Mister Cuddles, someone had missed you too.

The sound of ripping cloth, however, drew her attention away from the tearful reunion- another Insanity creature had gotten into the room, and was happily rampaging amongst her other plushies, tearing some of them into shreds. How something so wispy could do so much damage, Reine had no idea.

But if it was going to come into her property, it was sure as hell going to pay for it.

If Reine had learned how to properly discriminate 'enemy' from 'ally', her hoard of plushies would probably have taken less damage from her own attack. The creature, at least, was quickly destroyed, but the sound of even more fabric ripping felt like it was her own heart being torn into a billion shreds.

How was she going to explain this to Otto? Gingerly she lifted the cloth and stuffing, holding them close, as if by hugging them to herself she could somehow magically make the pieces reform into the original plushie.

One minute, one whole minute of silence to mourn the lost toy, and then she had to force herself to leave, tugging Mister Cuddles along behind her. The rest would have to wait for a more opportune time; this particular bear was her priority, one of the biggest sources of comfort. Selfish as she was, she felt she needed that most now. Besides, there were barely any beds in the underground base to share- she could just sleep, curled up in the teddy bear's embrace, in some unobtrusive corner.

Unfortunately something else seemed to have other plans for her. Turning a corridor Reine dropped the bear in shock, running ahead towards a body lying on the ground.

"Hey," she called, shaking him- but the body was cold to the touch, and she only just noticed the crumbling fragments of a weapons tablet then. Horrified, she backed away, only to see something else advance towards her, a grey figure forming from where the dead hunter was.

Why had she even... a teddy bear? When there were real, dead people here, and she could become one of them..

INSANITY CRITTER
1-10: You find the body of a fallen hunter, their weapon tablet lies on the ground but crumbles as you reach for it. The pieces quickly shift and expand into a large, insane creature. It's form is not very solid, and more cloud-like than anything.
Boss Stats
HP: 50
Auto Damage: 5 (hit or miss)
Extra: because of it's form, use a -8 modifier for accuracy! This does not count with charged attacks!

It moved faster than she'd expected, knocking her clean off her feet. Reine was grateful at least, for Mister Cuddles breaking her fall, but her own attack had gone wide, completely missing the creature. Now it loomed over her, strange and cloudy, and the life trainee panicked, scrabbling to just stand up, if she could get into position and strike back, everything would be okay she could survive this.

It was a shameless thought, and one she regretted immediately, but she wished Justin were there, tanking for her, as he called it. Any company, really, would have been appreciated.

The creature loomed even closer, and Reine slashed at it blindly. This time the hit connected- maybe only because of its proximity to her, so really it might have been a good thing it decided to be creepy- and when it recoiled, hissing and whispering, she took the chance to stand back up, brandishing the swordbreaker threateningly at it.

She wasn't going to give up, not here, not now, not when they were home. That would just be embarrassing.

The small creatures, naturally, had been easier to get rid of. This one was far tougher than she'd expected- or maybe she'd just gotten used to the small fry. It was the first time she'd seen one of these, and her eyes were drawn again to the dead hunter's body, on the ground.

If it had killed him, it could kill her too, it could--

One moment's distraction nearly cost her her life, as the creature lunged at her again; ironically, it was only tripping over the large teddy bear that saved her, the monster's claws scratching her cheek as she fell.

This time she barely managed to block the hit. If she could complain about unfairness, about it being that much easier to move around as a blobby cloud of thing, Reine probably would, but chances were that if she survived this, she would need to fight more of them anyway. And that meant getting used to it.

An infestation wasn't just one, or two- it was maybe hundreds of creatures, hundreds of these awful creatures that they needed to get rid of. That was daunting, to say the least; but if she couldn't even make it past one..

There shouldn't be an 'if', Reine thought, as she tried to fight back. It had to be more definite than that, life or death, yes or no, there were no in-betweens.

She threw herself at the creature with every bit of strength she had, viciously slashing at it. On hindsight that wasn't the best idea, when it simply gave way- she tumbled through it, a clumsy somersault, landing in a heap on the ground. By this time it had beaten her up pretty badly, though admittedly some of the damage had been done by herself; she was getting increasingly more panicked that she was going to end up just another body, another dead hunter, and Alynthe a stone tablet crumbling away.

The reminder was just inches away from her.

Before she could even get up, this time, it came charging at her again, as if it had lost patience, as if it had just been playing with her up until now. Whimpering, Reine backed away, but it seemed to have read her movements and matched them, its claws closing around her neck, choking her. She felt like she had been struggling forever before she finally broke its grip, gasping for breath when it let her go.

There was no way she could do this, not when it was so strong-- wait, she still had bandages, didn't she?

It didn't take her too long to find a bandage and slap it on- on the downside, the creature wasn't about to just sit and wait for her to be done. Swooping down on her, it went straight for her arm- apparently these creatures were more intelligent than they let on. The bandage hadn't had much effect, unfortunately; fortunately, she still had two more.

This time Reine stuck the bandage up her sleeve, breathing a little easier as she felt its effects; as long as she still had a fighting chance here, she was going to take it. Maybe running back to base and requesting assistance would have been a far smarter way to deal with this, but the thought of asking for help never occurred to her.

The bandage had given her some of her strength back, luckily. She managed to match its attack evenly, blocking first, and then slicing through it. If it had just been a little more solid, the trainee would probably have gotten more of a sense of satisfaction, but it felt like just hitting smoke that would hit back.

And she had no idea how effective this was, was she even hurting it?
