A sad expression laced the peacock's face, his wings slumped and his tail trailed upon the ground. He had been traveling far and wide and his body was becoming quite heavy under him. His family was no where to be found. He had lost them on the journey over here and he had yet to find them. Maybe this was telling him that he was meant to start over. Still they were his family, and well to him family meant everything.
Where they had come from he and his family were the only peacocks and now he was alone. The only one left as far as he knew. He was old, and possibly too old for this. He wouldn't be able to go on much farther and that saddened him even more. To Mayur, living was seemingly meaningless.

Sudhir was, frankly, bored. The day had thus far given him no new surprises, no adventures to follow. He'd spent a good part of the morning in his favorite activity - rolling in the wonderful smelling plants that grew in abundance near his grazing ground. As such, the smell of spearmint hung heavy in the air around him as he wandered, trying to decide what to do. He was tempted to visit The Boy, to perhaps get a few carrots... but The Boy's Sire had started to get closer than Sudhir would like - he didn't mind The Boy, but his Sire... well. That was another story entirely.
He continued to play with the thought of visiting The Boy as he walked, though he knew he wouldn't, not today. He was still expecting something new to happen... Suddenly, he caught sight of movement, and he froze, one foreleg lifted slightly, eyes narrowing. Was someone in his territory? That was, of course, unacceptable. Unless it was a female... then he might be persuaded to look the other way. But, unless he very much missed his guess, it was a male scent on the wind. His ears flicked back a moment, and then he blew out a gusty sigh - he'd better go greet the Interloper. Fluffing his peacock tail to make it look bigger and more impressive, he stretched his neck a bit, holding his head high, trying to look capable and sure. Hoping the other stallion wouldn't think today was a good day for a fight, he began to trot swiftly in the other's direction; slowly, the male came in to view, and he realized, with some astonishment, that the blue male had a tale just like his! How very curious...

Mayur had been too deep with in his sorrowful thoughts that he hadn't realized that another male approached. He didn't ear or smell the other male until he was literally upon him. At the scent of an unknown male the stallion turned around. To his surprise the brown and blue male who stood before him had quite the similar tail. Though his scent was not one that he knew or was familiar. He wasn't family, but at least he wasn't the only peacock here.
"Excuse me," The elder male finally spoke, his voice hoarse from the lack of use. After all this was one of the only Kirin he had seen in a while, which made him wonder how many actually had made it safely here from Aerithe's collapse. "Who are your parents?" a little bit of hope seemed to ring throughout his horse voice.

When the older stallion turned to him, Sudhir pawed the ground before him, a little nervous. Had this interloper come to take his grazing grounds? He was ready to greet the other when the blue male suddenly spoke, and asked what Sudhir thought was a very inappropriate question. Of course, he hadn't interacted with many others during his life, so perhaps all Kirin asked about parentage on first meeting someone. Trying not to show his surprise, the young stallion blinked, then bowed his head slightly, deciding it would be best to be polite. For now.
If this stallion wanted his bed of spearmint plants, however, there would be problems.
"I have no parents." he informed his new - and hopefully temporary - companion. His own voice was young, just settling into the deeper tones of maturity. "At least not that I remember. I have always been alone." A beat of silence, and then he decided to return the odd greeting. "Who are your parents?" Then, before the other could answer, he backed up a few paces, fluffing his tail slightly again. "Are you here to find territory? This place is mine." Though he tried to sound sure and firm, Mayur would be able to hear that he was a little apprehensive. "I am Sudhir, and I have been here for a long time." A lie - it had been perhaps a week. "I will not move on." Then, hopefully: "Do you have any females? Perhaps a daughter that is looking for a protector, or to start a new herd?" He dearly wanted a female to protect. This older stallion seemed to be alone, but... one never knew.

The male hadn't realized how rude he might have just been, but that really wasn't on his mind at the moment. All he was worried about is if the other was related to him. All this searching for his lost family members was quite exhausting. "Ah, I see," he murmured what little hope that had been in his hoarse voice before smashed. "We are the same then. No parents, but I was never truly alone until now." He watched the other curiosity in his blue eyes at his movements. Mayur hadn't meant for his presence, to be threatening, but it looked like he had threatened the other's territory even if it was unintentional.
Mayur was quite the docile stallion, unless it came to the safety of his family then he was quite protective. "You may call me Mayur young one. I'm sorry I didn't mean to intrude upon your territory." he apologized, not wanting the other to misunderstand him. At the mention if he had a daughter his face fell and sadness seemed to return to it.
"I did, before the collapse of Aerithe," he replied softly, however he knew this one was possibly to young to even know what he was talking about. "Though I think they are lost, along with my sons, granddaughters, grandsons and my mate." He tilted his head towards the sky, Sweet Aoibheann where are you? he thought to himself. "I am currently looking for those who are left in my family, if there are any."

Sudhir wondered at the way Mayur seemed a bit... crushed when he told the other he didn't know his parents. And he was alone now? Sudhir supposed that was sad, at least if one was used to being surrounded by family. In fact, he was suddenly feeling quite charitable towards the older stallion, and relaxed completely when Mayur informed him he hadn't meant to intrude. He watched the other carefully as he spoke of losing his family, pawing at the ground a moment as he thought.
"Was Aerithe your territory? Did you lose it to another male?" he asked, then hesitated a moment. "I have never had a family, but I am sad you lost yours." Another hesitation as the stallion tried to figure out the best way to offer comfort. Well, he knew what would cheer him up. Suddenly he stepped a little closer, speaking to Mayur in a whisper, as if about some great secret. "I have a bed of spearmint. It smells very good when you roll in it. Would you like to come roll in it, Mayur? You are sad... so I will let you." Stepping back, the young stallion looked quite pleased with himself, both for being so considerate, and for possibly finding a way to cheer Mayur up. "Would you like to? If you are thirsty first, I also have a very nice stream. Nice and cold. Then you will feel stronger, and be able to search more."

"Aerithe was land just like this one, however it feel to disaster. The goddess with her dying powers brought those who prayed over to this land to continuing to live. I prayed for my family, but when I woke again I was all alone. So I thought that they must be lost, but I have yet to find them, in the many months of searching." The male's left hoof pawed at the ground as he spoke, his head down attention upon the hole it was digging.
When the other came close and whispered in his ear he took a step back in surprise, he hadn't been expecting that. "I shall have to decline," He replied politely. "The offer is nice, but rolling on the ground will dirty my feathers." the male began to wonder if that is how the others feather's go so brown. "But that stream does sound promising." taking him up on his last offer.

Aerithe... now that he thought on it, Sudhir had heard other Kirin murmur the name, though it had possessed no meaning to him then. Even now, it seemed a bit absurd, to think of another land - this was all there was, after all. But it would be rude to question his companion's sanity, and so he refrained, examining Mayur for a moment. "Well, I guess if you don't want to roll, that's up to you. It's quite enjoyable though... and the smell is fantastic." Sudhir wasn't too concerned with being dirty - and the plants generally grew thick enough to form a carpet between him and the bare earth anyway. "But the stream is this way!"
Turning back toward the way he'd come from, he shook himself a moment, then fluffed his tail before starting off. "You know..." he started after they'd been walking in silence for a few moments. "I don't know much about families, but... couldn't you start a new one? There must be plenty of females about who would enjoy having your protection. Why not find one and start a new life? I suppose it wouldn't be the same... but then maybe you wouldn't be so lonely. I'm glad I never get lonely... it doesn't seem to be very much fun."

Lifting the feathers of his tail off of the ground he followed the other male in silence, listening to him speak for a bit. "I don't think I would be able to mate with another." He replied back somberly. "Aoibheann is my lifemate and forever will be, I made that promise with her. A promise I don't intend to break." There was a bit of a pause as he seemed to be lost in thought about something.
"When I find members of my broken family I won't be alone." he told him finally speaking again. "Once I find them, I think I will make a herd, in which I can protect and will protect." His feathers ruffled, slightly puffing when he said this. "I suppose that could be starting anew."

Sudhir paused in his walking a moment, startled, then shook his head and started forward again. "One female... forever? I don't know about that. I'd like to have more... two or three. I very much want females to take care of. It is only proper for a stallion, after all." Stretching his neck, he sniffed the air, pleased to note they were coming near to his spearmint patch - the stream was just beyond, and they could now hear it babbling merrily in the background. "Do most females want their protector to have only one of them? That would be very sad."
Looking back at the other a moment, he blinked, then nodded again. "And... I hope you do find your family, Mayur. I hope you get your herd. It is a noble cause. Almost as good as finding females to protect." It seemed that, now that he had a territory, the young stallion had a bit of a one track mind about finding a female... or more. "We're almost there. Once we've had something to drink I could..." There was a pause, as he considered. He liked Mayur, wanted the stallion to perk up... he wanted it enough that he supposed he was willing to share something even more private than his spearmint patch. "I have a Boy." he started again, slowly. "He gives me carrots. He might give you carrots too. Would you... like to go see?"

"Yes, only one. That is all I need and all most prefer. Think about it would you like your mare going off with another stallion?" He questioned him. "Besides after you protect one mare you soon then can protect the little ones that follow. One is usually enough if you find the right one. How are you able to protect many if you have a hard time keeping track of one? Most of the mare's I've meet on this journey are quite independent."
He paused a bit as he noted the sounds of the streams in the back of his mind. He was quite glad that they were getting closer to it. "I thank you Sudhir," he finally spoke again after a long pause of silence. "If you wish, when the time comes you are welcome to join the herd, you may find the right mare among it." he offered
At the mention of the boy the stallion's nose wrinkled and he gave a huff. "The first and last human I saw wanted my beauty for themselves." He paused again. "Though, I suppose I could try with their kind again, as long as he doesn't pull out my tail feathers."

Independent females? Sudhir took this in with a measure of disbelief. Surely females were docile creatures, who all wanted protection as much as he wanted to give it. Mayur, with his talk of one female and other, strange lands, must have gone a bit silly in the head from all his traveling alone. Sudhir felt badly for him, for he'd decided he liked the older peacock. "I thank you for the invitation, but the herd will likely be far from here... and I like this spot. There is the spearmint, and The Boy, and my meadow and stream... I am happy here. If I had a female, it would be perfect."
As he spoke, they reached the stream; it was fairly wide, with fast flowing, cool water that burbled a merry tune as it flowed. Wading in a little, enjoying the feel of the water along his forelegs, he bowed his head to take a quick drink, then looked back to his new friend. "The Boy won't pull out your feathers. He never comes close enough. He is very respectful. His Sire tries to approach sometimes, but I do not let him. He probably means to tame me, and I do not think I would like that very much. But The Boy only leaves carrots, then retreats and watches me eat. He is a good Boy. But if you don't want to see him, that is fine too. I just thought carrots might cheer you up... they are very delicious. Have you ever had a carrot, Mayur?"

"I have yet to find a good spot yet, so maybe it will be close to here. Still if it isn't and the herd gets to big, there will have to be sub herds with in the big herd." he told him back. "Perhaps when that time comes you could run one of the sub herds, if it does interest you. That way you wouldn't have to leave your home, but would still be a part of the herd."
Taking a pause he dipped his muzzle into the bubbling waters and took a long drink from it. Moistening his semi dry mouth. The cold waters felt good as they traveled down to his stomach. It really was what he needed. "I have not had these carrot things you speak of." Mayur replied after he had finished drinking.

"A herd, hm?" Sudhir murmured, then rolled his shoulders. "I do not know about that. Seems there would be more Kirin in one than I would like. There would probably be males too. I don't like males." A beat, and then he snorted. "Well, you aren't so bad. So maybe there are others I wouldn't mind." He dropped his head and took another drink of water, slowly this time, thinking over the offer and the possibilities. "I am unsure." he finally murmured as he brought his head up. "If the time comes, I will think of it then. But I do hope you find your family... it seems very important to you."
Suddenly, a light entered his eyes, and he gave another snort, this one seemingly full of excitement. "Carrots are wonderful things. They are crisp and crunchy, and very good." At that, he actually pranced a bit in the stream, sending up small splashes of water. "I think humans grow them. Since The Boy started giving them to me, I have looked for them elsewhere, but I can find none. That is why I like The Boy." Well, part of the reason... but no one needed to know the rest.

The male took another drink before speaking again. "I'm sure if you expand your horizons more you'll find other males you'll get along with."The male's head moved and he began to preen his feathers, taking out what dirt had gotten stuck between them with his teeth.
"Then I shall come and find you when the time comes and ask once more." The older male peacock replied back to the male's agreement settling himself upon the agreement. "It is. Tell me Sudhir, between females, this boy and your spearmint patch which do you consider more important?" It might have seemed like an odd question, but the older male wanted to make a point with it.
"I see," He muttered to the male's last statement, "Then these carrot things are what's important not the boy. Unless there are other reasons you like this two legger." However he was not going to inquire about it any further. The other's male business was his own. "So, lets go meet this boy of yours. I would like to see what he is like for myself."
