Things were different in the mortal world. Something about the quality of light, the intensity of colors and sounds...he couldn't quite put a paw on it. Likely the difference was a combination of many things. Perhaps it was related to the fact that the Gods' Haven was, well, mostly inhabited by gods. Beings of power who frankly couldn't help exuding that power into the very air around them. Perhaps millenia of that had somethign to do with the differences between the Haven and the mortal realm. But Kamiseen was no god of Philosophy, to ponder the meaning of life and the universe around him. He was the god of Sandstorms, and right beneath him was one of the mighty forces of wind and grit, stirring into life.

He never tired of watching this phenomenon. And while he could simply watch from home, there was something exhilerating about actually being present here, and viewing the sight in person. Why had he never done this before in this lifetime? Perhaps he'd been spending far too much time with Nemanja and the other god's Apathy was rubbing off. Or maybe he'd just been lazy, just been playing at his role instead of fulfilling it.

It irked the god to think that Ayira might have been right to taunt him. But he wasn't afraid of change, he certainly wasn't afraid of mortals and he damned well wasn't afraid of Evolution! And this wasn't just some "sand pile" in the Haven, this was a real, full-size sandstorm in the mortal world! Idly, he wondered what the annoying goddess would say if she saw this.

Well, she would probably put on some superior act and make him even angrier. Best to not even think of her in that case. He didn't want to be unnecessarily cruel here. Sandstorms were destructive forces of nature and Kamiseen was their embodiment. However, they (and therefore he) didn't seek out victims. Those unfortunate enough to be caught in a sandstorm's path were simply that. Unfortunate. Unlucky. The sandstorm had randomly picked a direction and they'd lost.

Well, in this case, there were creatures in this sandstorm's path. Kamiseen had nothing against them, didn't even know anything about them, other than the fact that they were two families' worth of lions living together. Not even a pride. Some would think the god should feel guilty for the destruction and chaos approaching their home. Some might just hope he wasn't avidly watching a rare form of entertainment.

In realitly, the god simply took note of the fact and returned to observing the fury of the developing sandstorm. Mortals came and mortals went. There were always more mortals. Now a good sandstorm, that only came around once in a lifetime. He wondered idly if this would be the storm of this particular lifetime.

For the lions below, the wind had already begun to pick up and bits of earth and grit had started to fly through the air.

Antallian was the first to notice. The day had dawned beautifully clear, as was usual in this part of the world, and especially at this time of year. It happened that the sand and white lion was looking up towards the north and saw a cloud.

But...clouds usually came from the mountains in the east. And they didn't usually move that fast. He could actually see the thing growing! That...boded ill.

"Ah think...we should move," Bauble told everyone, adults and juveniles alike. "Thar's a cloud on tha horizon, an' it don' look friendly." He took the time to look at each and every one of his six offspring, to try and express wordlessly to them how important this was. Finally he turned to his mate for help.

An unfriendly cloud? Inatarni wondered what on earth her beloved (if a little slow) mate was talking about this time. Then she looked northwards and saw it. A brown cloud, moving fast as the wind - and the wind was beginning to pick up. It was the wrong time of year for the rains, which meant there was only one thing the cloud could possibly be. She'd have thought that this terrain was too wet for it, but sandstorms came as they pleased and nothing could a mere lioness do to stop them.

"Quick, we have to run," she told the families. "Kids, pick a parent and stay by them. We cannot get separated. If you get left behind, we won't be able to come back for you."

The lioness hoped that the kids would hear the urgency in her voice and realize that this was an Emergency and not at all a drill. Damnit, they'd never discussed what to do in case of a sandstorm! Enemies, yes. Floods, yes. Sandstorms?

Well, it hadn't seemed necessary at the time. And now that "unnecessary" discussion that had never happened was biting Spina in the tail and what a kink that made.

"Hurry!" she urged them, pawing Antallian to get his attention and heading to the east. She thought there might be some caves not too far that they could wait the storm out inside of.

Blackbone was playing in the sandy dirt, trying to change Nitida's white fur to a sandy brown like his. It was great fun, since the young lioness hated the game as much as he enjoyed it. Of course, there was an element of danger, since there were parents everywhere and the longer things went on, the more likely it was that he'd get in trouble for it. Again.

Well, that was a fairly normal part of Selet's short life. No big deal. Sometimes he went hungry, sometimes he had to sit and stare at a blank wall of the den for hours. Sometimes he had to go with Dad and listen to boring stories that barely made sense while looking for equally boring plants.

Which made it entirely understandable when he ignored Antallian's shout about an "unfriendly cloud." He only began to pay attention when his mother started shouting orders. Blackbone abandoned his game to look up and around for whatever it was.

Oh...was that it? There was a cool cloud coming at them, fast! It was brown, like him, and growing by the second. In fact, the wind was blowing bits of sand and dirt around all around him. That might just be the coolest thing the juvenile had ever seen!

Nitida was about to do something drastic to stupid Selet - like call her Daddy or Mommy or his Daddy or Mommy or just claw him herself - when she heard the shout. That...cloud...definitely looked unfriendly. Or scary. No, it looked downright mean. Nitida prided herself on being a big, brave girl, but being brave enough to stand up to that cloud sounded like a losing proposition.

"Mom!" she squealed in fright, and ran over to her nearest parent. On hearing Inatarni's instructions, she reached out and put a paw on her mother's leg, as if to verify the older lioness was here.

"I'm right here Mom, where are we going?" she asked, voice going all high and squeaky, like it had been when she was a cub.

Hephzibah had been distracting herself with her tail tip, taking the momentary lull to play a game. Though they were all together, in this moment of slowness she had decided that yes, she would someday get her tail tip. It just always seemed that much out of reach.

The black and white cub was easily entertained. She was bright and quick witted, but so easily distracted that her smarts weren't always noticed. She also seemed to find amusement in everything that she likely came off as a little slow. Like now, as she pounced in half-circles, trying to fetch the very tip of her tail!

Sure, it was a silly little game. . . but it was fun! Especially when she'd stop after a few round and watch the world spin . . . . .

Just as she was about to n** at her tail tip, her mother's voice broke through and called her attention. Ears flicking forward, she looked up and . . .hobbled for a moment, steadying herself from her game. The world spun, sand surrounding her, but even as she found her bearing and stifled a giggle, she saw that the sand didn't quite spin . . . so much as dance. And it was kicking up in a breeze.

But what was this all about? Pick a parent? Her pale furred father was closest, so she scurried closer to him. Her red gaze had caught sight of the massive cloud, and she too stared transfixed for a moment. What was it? It was so . . . HUGE. Was it a moving mountain? She didn't think those could move. . . Or was it a cloud? It was awfully dark to be one . . . .

"Papa, what is it?" She asked, knowing she had to stick close to her father, but also wanting to know what was going on. Where had this new haste and anxiety sprung from?

User Image Allianti was not always the most intelligent of juveniles, but she was at the very least one of the most determined. She was patiently attempting to find a nice place to hide her latest shiny treasure, a pretty rock that was worn smooth. She had been carrying it in her mouth for a few minutes now, debating exchanging it for just a few hairs out of Hephzibah's tail, when she finally decided to pay attention to what was being said around her.

Wait, what were they looking at? What was that big cloud? Allianti sniffed at it once, then hurried to her mother's side, anxiety seizing her, though she couldn't quite understand why. A cloud was just a cloud, wasn't it?

"Why're we running?" She asked, or tried to anyway. Instead, what came out was "Iiii aww eee ahnin?" due to the pebble she still held clenched tightly in her teeth. Were the adults really afraid of a cloud? What in the world was happening?

He could see them, the mortal lions below. The storm winds had picked up in this brief amount of time. The young lions - juveniles, he guessed, based on their size - weren't so small that they were being picked up and thrown around, but it was taking a great deal of effort on their part to move against the wind. The adults were more stable, but he could tell that the wind was starting to be an issue.

It looked like some of the lions were calling out to each other, but the wind garbled their words and carried them off before Kamiseen could make any out. He did see that some of the children were moving towards their parents. The god thought this to be a sensible precaution - the larger the weight, the less likely it would be moved by the storm. Not to mention the more likely the group would stay together through the storm and be able to find each other afterwards.

Such strange thoughts he entertained here. Why should he care whether mortals lived or died?

Antallian reflexively put a paw on Hephzibah as she came over to him. This was one cub - er, juvenile - that he could keep by him. Bauble was trying his hardest to put on a brave face, but he was shaking in his fur. He'd never actually seen a storm like this before, only heard rumors. And those rumors were enough to make anyone want to hide under a nice big rock.

"Tha's a sandstorm, 'Zibah," he told the girl. "Thar dangerous, an' it looks like this'n wants tae kill us." He began nudging her gently out of the path of the storm. Inwardly, the white and gold lion was fretting that the kids wouldn't be fast enough for them to flee the way they had to in order to survive.

Inatarni was a step above panic. Unlike her mate, she'd seen a sandstorm in person before. Unfortunately, that had also been the last time she saw her own mother. The black lioness refused to allow that to happen to her own children. Never again, that was her motto for life.

She looked down to see Allianti at her side. Thank the gods, that was one child down, two counting Hephzibah over with Antallian, and only four left to find. The lioness spared a moment to look down at her daughter. "Remember, sweetie, no one can understand you when you've got something in your mouth."

Maternal correction made, now to get a hold of the rest of the kids. "Barnixos, Elsen, Eskeleta, Selet!" she called out. "Get over here, now!"

In his momentary distraction, Nitida had run off, over to her mother. Selet sighed. He never got to finish making the girl a proper brown before she ran away, and this time she hadn't even taken the time to react to his work! Talk about unappreciated.

So he spent his time watching how dirt and now little rocks were flying through the air, all in one direction. All away from the big, dark cloud. He'd never seen things that big just flying around before, it was so cool! This was, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Blackbone and he had to see more!

He began padding closer to it, stopping when he heard his name being called. Sigh. Moms. They always wanted to keep you from the fun stuff.

The juvenile didn't really take note of the panic pitching Inatarni's voice higher than usual.

Nitida cowered against her mother's leg as the cloud got bigger and kept coming closer. There were dirt and small rocks now, hitting her in every place that faced the big and scary cloud. The juvenile turned, trying to show it a smaller target. As she looked back in fear, she noticed that her fur wasn't its usual white. Oh no, had the cloud done all that to her already? It must be a mean and evil and spiteful cloud. She was awfully proud of knowing that word, it was special and a grownup type of word. Nitida even knew what it meant - it was to do something mean for no good reason at all, so it definitely was the right word for the cloud!

"Mooooom," she whined. "I'm scared!"

Yes, they were gathering, the mortals and the storm winds. Most of the children had managed to get near to their parents. And the winds had picked up their pace. Now the juveniles were having a hard time gripping the ground.

Suddenly, he refused to watch anymore. He didn't need to know how many lived or how many died. They were mortals. They would all die in time. Even gods died.

Antallian grabbed at whichever kids he could, relying on Inatarni to get the rest. The sandstorm now screamed its fury to the earth, a roaring that no mortal voices could penetrate. It was all he could do to hurry his family to a small overhanging rock that offered shelter.

It must have been instinct that allowed Inatarni to follow Antallian through the blinding sand and winds. She'd gathered up the few children that he hadn't and followed blindly after towards the promise of safety.

There was no more she could do in the growing darkness of debris.
