"Do you really think we should be out right now?" Fen'li asked quietly, in a whisper, while walking, shoulders hunched, next to Karm. Fen'li was so much bright in pelt color in contrast to her companion, perhaps brighter even in attitude, but Fen'li was also naive.

Karm, on the other hand, knew what the world could hold, and had no fear of it. She was raised to be strong, take things head on, and she would fight for what she believed in. Right now, she believed in moving, trying to find somewhere for a suitable shelter for the two of them. Although an adult, Karm viewed Fen'li like a younger sister, she didn't know what responsibilities she had.

"We're fine, just keep moving."

"But-"

Karm glanced at Fen'li with a harsh gaze, strength in her shoulders as she continued to move, not stopping. Karm had an alterier plan to moving at night. Not only would the sun not beat onto her dark pelt, but she could also keep walking, training, stretching her muscles, and perhaps build some on Fen'li. Fen'li was so scrawny and thin compared to her. So strange to be so different but together.

"Fine," Fen'li huffed and became instantly quiet, peering up at the moon as they walked. Fen remembered Karm telling stories about Karm's family, how some of them had eyes like the moon that couldn't look into daylight, that she was lucky enough to be able to see the sun. Blinking, Fen'li wondered what it'd be like, to be cast into a world unknown, she almost thought it might be exciting.

User Image"Come on, old man," Ruzanski chided his companion as they made their way over a ridge. "Keep up."

Because they were outside of the forests in which he felt significantly more comfortable, Ru was moving at a gait that could only be described as a stalk. Some might also have gone on to say that stalking when one was a Stormborn captain in the presence of an experienced and fierce Stormborn reaver was unnecessary, but Ru had not been born among the Stormborn, and he remembered that there were dangers beyond the coping abilities of two lions, even if they were as martial as he and Vol. The band had already met up with one such creature fairly early in their outing and Vol had come out of it with an injury that had only recently begun to show signs of mending.

When the band stopped to make camp for the night Ru had grabbed Vol to do a little bit of scouting to determine which direction they would take come morning. This portion of the rogue lands was not familiar to Ru, but Vol had raided into it before, and so his advice would be valuable to the young captain. As usual. Ru knew he owed a great deal to the older lion, but that did not mean he would be treating showing overdue deference to him. It wasn't good for him, Ru figured.

User ImageA very short distance behind Ru, Voldemaras strode confidently through the night. He was having no difficulty keeping up with Ru's stalking pace, but it did impress him how quickly the captain could move while simultaneously making absolutely no noise beyond his speech.

"Watch the old man stuff, whelp," Vol grumbled. "I can still take you on the sands any time."

When he spoke of the sands, Vol might have been referring to the sandy beaches that bordered parts of the Stormborn pride or the sand-strewn patch of ground that many reavers used to spar and keep in practice between viking expeditions.

He might have continued posturing but something caught his attention. It wasn't a sound, exactly, but rather the very sudden absence of a sound that had been there before. Under the moonlight, such things were more noticeable to the older lion, who made a sharp gesture for silence and glanced meaningfully toward the south.

User Image Following close behind the pair of dark lions, though keeping enough distance between them so as to keep a better eye out for possible dangers that might pose a threat to the group, the large dull golden lion made his way through the night. He preferred the flanking position, feeling himself all too inexperienced to be charged with a frontal position, as he was able to keep up with the pace well enough but not exactly the most stealthy nor quick on his paws. Best to let the captain and experienced Reaver lead him around, as Don saw it, he was only here for back up.

Having not been born in the Viking pride, Don was fairly more at ease in the familiar surroundings of forest and savannah. It helped keep the tension from his muscles, and his eyes eagerly scanning familiar terrain. For the most part, the hefty lion was staying out of the way, keeping himself quiet and cut off so as not to fumble or screw up, but there just in case. For now, its what he preferred, until he knew what to expect on a Viking.

The motion for silence from the large dark lion Vol did not catch him off guard, already keeping himself closed off the golden lion hunkered lower into a stalking position, paying extra attention to how he placed his paws. This was interesting.

Fen'li tried keeping up as best she could, but stopped, breath making her chest heave, "Karm, please, can we rest now? I'm so tired," Fen'li realized after speaking that her voice sounded almost like thunder during this time. Everything was silent around them, it made her fur stand on end. She wanted to scoot under some fallen tree, something, to get out of the open ground they were in. "Please, Karm, please? I don't like this."

Karm bristled when Fen'li spoke so loud, she halted her movements, and listened to her companion complain. She sighed, almost huffing, and turned to look at Fen with a harsh gaze, "Why must you always be tired. Did you not learn how to pace yourself? How did you stay out alone for so long?"

Fen'li shrugged and came closer to Karm, almost pressing her side against her darker and wiser companion, "I didn't go out during...times like this, I don't like this time of day, I like the dawn, the high morning, this is..strange to me."

"But its cooler to move."

"But scary."

Karm huffed and shook her head pulling away from Fen slightly, "What, you just want to stand out in the open? In the dead of night? If my father had met you as a cub, he would have you staying up all night to get the fear out of you, train you properly, as a guard and warrior," Karm said raising her head.

"But you're not anymor-"

"Be quiet!" Karm said, coming close to Fen'li, "not another word, understand?"

Fen'li nodded and they moved again. Fen'li only knew something had happened to Karm's pride...Karm didn't speak of it much.

But Fen'li felt like something was close, and her tail curled around her back leg, Karm in front of her, leading the way.

Ru may have been the captain of the viking, but things like that didn't matter when another member of one's scouting party indicated that all present ought to be silent. He stopped moving, since that was what Vol had done, and quieted even his breathing. Then he looked behind to make sure that Don had done the same, or something like it. There was little point in him and Vol attempting to be stealthy if Don wasn't going to go along with it. At least for the time being. Fortunately, Don seemed to have seen Vol's gesture, too.

Watching the other tacit gestures Vol made, Ru learned that his second in command believed there was someone ahead, perhaps over the crest of the ridge and some distance further. This someone was apparently too far for either party to be within scenting distance of the other, and that was good it would give Ru and his two companions time to plan. Well, it would give Ru time to plan and the others time to move into position to execute his plan. Such was the life of a captain.

It took less than a minute for Ru to make up his mind.

_____

After he had given his initial opinion through silent gestures made exaggerated so that Don could see them at a distance, Vol held still and waited for orders from the much younger lion beside him. It didn't take long for those to come, which made Vol smile inwardly. It was good to see that Ru was comfortable in a position of command. But why shouldn't he? Vol had the training of him when he was younger and new to the pride.

Ru had apparently decided that more glory for the viking would be a fine thing, and so he signaled to Don and Vol that they were going to attempt to capture whomever it was on the other side of the ridge. Vol approved so far. Not only was Ru comfortable commanding, but he was ambitious. Those two traits could do a world of good for a captain of the Stormborn.

Ru's next signals were also made exaggeratedly so that Don could see them: Ru and Vol would remain more or less where they were and Don was to circle around and drive their quarry toward them. It seemed like a sound plan to Vol. Tried and true, as it were.
PostPosted: Wed May 30, 2012 10:25 am

Don, having lived a mostly solitary life, had to pay extra attention to the silent communication. His eyes squinted in the darkness as he followed each exaggerated movement of Ru, and did not move until he was sure the captain had conveyed everything he needed to. As it looked as though Ru had finished, Don gave a quick nod of his large head and once again moved off in silence. Not even a grunt passed his maw. Keeping the indicated direction in mind, the large golden lion made a wide, slow circle in the darkness, careful how he placed his paws and keen moving as quickly as possible while staying as silent as he could be. Being a large, bulky male meant that needed plenty of concentration.

His ears swiveled constantly, picking up any signs he could on their quarry. When he was certain he was in position, in the opposite direction of Ru and Vol so as to drive their targets towards them, the large male took the time to creep forward, unsheathe his claws and tense his muscles. It started as a rumbling growl that reverberated in his throat, scenting the air and getting a whiff of what lay ahead. His first few steps into the clearing were slow and deliberate, eyes locking on the figures in the distance. Without hesitation the golden brute broke into a charge, lips pulling back to snarl against the night and shattering any chance they might have had in not seeing him before. His ghostly white face and gleaming ruby eyes shone brightly in the moonlight, as his charging form quickly ate what little distance was between him and the lionesses. To further push his menacing intent, the lion loosed a tooth-flashing roar and showed no signs of stopping the closer he got.

Fen'li sat back on the ground and Karm had the mind to keep walking, but she hesitated, snarling in annoyance, and turned to Fen'li to say something but as she opened her mouth to argue once more, something changed. She stopped moving, halted her movements, even her breath, and saw him coming. She knew well enough to be still, not move or show threatening position, but as a roar boomed from the approaching...male, she determined, Karm knew this was not a pleasant inquiry.

Fen'li turned her eyes as the roar erupted behind her, her fur standing on end and she immediately came to a stand and bolted, opposite of the male. She ran passed Karm, but tagged her companion on the shoulder to follow. Her heart was beating so hard in Fen'li's chest, she thought it might burst forth.

"Fen'li, No!"

"We've got to get away! Get away!"

"Fen!"

It was obvious Fen'li was terror struck, perhaps she had had an encounter with a male in the passed. Karm stood and roared in reply to the enclosing male, but quickly took after Fen'li so she would ont be alone. "Fen stop, not so far! Stay close!"

Except she didn't listen, didn't hear, she turned her head back to look at Karm, stumbled and slid on the ground. Who would be her savior? Haphazardly moving quickly, she tried to regain her footing as Karm tried to close the gap between herself and Fen'li, but this encroaching male, he was too fast...what was he? Part cheetah?

Ru exchanged a glance with Vol as he watched Don following his instructions. As silly as it might seem, the dark-furred lion could not help but feel a frission of delight when someone obeyed the commands he issued. The possibility of capturing thralls was certainly exciting, but Ru was secretly just as excited by the fact that he was now a figure of authority. Actually, the thought was a little horrifying.

He peered over the ridge and at last he saw the quarry he'd sent Don around to pursue. A pair of lionesses. That would be a pleasant take. He had no doubt of their eventual success. There were three Stormborn here and only two of those lionesses. Taking on a goddess had been foolishness. Pure hubris. But these two did not seem to be goddesses of any sort. Just scared and angry lionesses.

"Good work, Don," Ru murmured as he indicated with a head motion to Vol that they would be making their move shortly.
_____

It was unlikely that the pair of lionesses was going to run up the ridge, in Vol's opinion, but with Don driving them before him the odds increased, and that seemed to be what Ru was hoping for. As the pair of Stormborn moved forward to intercept the lionesses in flight Vol noticed that the pale, moon-coated lioness had stumbled and lost her footing.

Vol turned his amber gaze to Ru momentarily to see what his captain wanted him to do about this development and was met with a quick nod. This one was to be his to subdue then. That was fine with him, and as she struggled to regain her footing Vol leaped forward, closing the last few yards between them with a jump that pulled open a few wounds from their encounter with the goddess.

If he landed as planned he would at least be able to shove the striped lioness off her feet once again, and ideally he would land on top of her, claws and teeth bared.

It appeared as though one of them was going to stand their ground, and Don couldn't lie to himself, he just might have enjoyed having to grapple one of the lionesses to the ground himself. As it was, the other's panic seemed to drive the stand-offish one into fleeing after her, and Don gave a mental sigh. Damn. Regardless, the lion continued his head-on-charge, attempting to remain as close to their quarry as possible, nipping at their heels relentlessly.

As he drove them closer towards the area he assumed his two companions to be setting up the ambush, Don slowed down eventually, giving the two other males room to work without getting in their way. Don on the other paw would remain on guard, keeping a patrol on the perimeter and all around prepared to leap back into action if one of the lionesses proved too difficult to handle. Of course, he'd also need to keep his attention on Ru, just in case his captain had other orders for him. The brute continued his growling, and baring of teeth remaining every bit as threatening as he had been in the initial charge.

Fen'li struggled to gain her footing. It was obvious she was not as nimble nor as well suited to deal with such happenings as this. This was what Karm was for! Karm was the strong one! Why her? Why them? These were the thoughts passing through Fen'li's mind as she looked up, eyes wide, ears flattening against her skull as a large, dark male propelled himself at her.

Her legs scurried, almost flailing, but did not move her in time. She almost whimpered in fear of this male as he came down upon her. His legs were on all sides of her and as she tried to push up with her paws and felt his fur and his muscles, she closed her eyes and began to shake.

"No, no, no, no, please, no," erupted from her mouth, pleading, "please no, don't, don't hurt me," she began to curl up. "Karm, Karm help me!"

As she watched the large male make rise for Fen'li, she felt her blood boil, as if it became red hot like her eyes and a roar erupted from her throat. Angry, full of wanting to move any obstacle in her way. She ran from them but heard the male behind, hot on her paws, and felt sharp fangs. She stumbled, briefly, but kept her footing. She began to zig zag quickly, and make almost leaping bounds, breathing in her nose, out her mouth, keeping her tempo going.

"Leave her alone!" she commanded, snarling, coming within feet of the dark male. The dark male did not seem to want to move, and Karm looked behind her to the lighter male, letting his presence known, and her fur bristled.

She lunged for the lighter colored male, claws unsheathed, she'd go for his throat and underbelly if she had to. But her rage was leaving her blind to the fact there were three of them here, not just two. She also wasn't paying attention to the anchoring of her paws.

"What do you want?" Fen'li said, curling up even more, cowering, she was not hardened like Karm, no where near, "what did we do? I can do nothing, but she, she could hurt...hurt him, why?" her words were beginning to jumble together.

((feel free to slam/take down Karm/sweep her paws - left that open for you guys~ :] ))

Ru looked over his shoulder to ascertain that Vol was managing all right with the lioness he'd picked as his mark, but he had no reason to. The older lion was an experienced reaver and knew what he was doing. Even being so recently injured by a goddess, Vol was perfectly capable of doing his job. Ru would not worry any further about him for the time being. Instead he interposed himself smoothly between Vol and the raging lioness with the dark coat and red eyes, which would give the older reaver time and space to do whatever needed doing to subdue the pale lioness.

From this position he looked past her to initiate brief eye contact with Don. In a split second Ru made the decision that he would have Don make this capture, and it seemed that the dark lioness agreed with his decision, having decided to turn and attack him. Thus, with a very small smile of amusement at how things were playing out, the captain made an unmistakable "after you" gesture to the tawny-coated reaver opposite him. It probably wouldn't be noticed, but that was all right.

"No one needs to be hurt," he said, raising his voice above the sounds of the fray. Ostensibly he was addressing the lioness who had asked, but his louder pitch was meant to carry to the fighter, too.

"This is not a fight you can win, and submitting now will spare you considerable discomfort in the days to follow, after we return with you to our band and eventually to our pride. You may wish to consider that before you attack further."
_____

Vol held his position standing over the slighter lioness and pinning her to the ground, but he took advantage of his position behind Ru to roll his eyes at his young protege's insistence on explaining matters to the thralls he took. In Vol's not so humble opinion, Ru talked too much, and not always to particularly great effect. There were memorable occasions where Ru had been interrupted mid-sentence by a thrall-to-be attacking instead of listening to him. None of those occasions had ended well for the future thrall though, so Vol wasn't worried.

Given his druthers, the older reaver would have just attacked, knocked both lionesses out, and dragged them back to the band to be placed under guard and allowed to figure out their new roles in life from context clues. Clues like the fact that they would be prevented from leaving, obviously, and punished for any misdemeanors with varying degrees of violence or the withholding of food. The Stormborn were lions, not monkeys, so the idea of binding captives was alien to them, but there were other ways to ensure captured thralls didn't escape. They just tended to be painful.

Vol crouched lower so that he could touch his teeth to the neck of the lioness he had trapped, and then he growled softly, "You're not going to give me any trouble, I know, but perhaps you should persuade your friend to do likewise. It would be a shame if I had to hurt you for something she did."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:20 pm

Don's ruby eyes remained alert and transfixed on the proceedings, his pale teeth still visible and gleaming in the moonlight. A quick look to Ru as the captain made eye-contact, but the tawny lion's attention swiftly shifted to the attacking lioness. Her brash eagerness to challenge him thickened his blood and once more the brute loosed a blood-curdling roar, stifling the last bit of noise with a snarl and smack of his jaws. He wasn't sure what she was expecting to accomplish, but he didn't hesitate in his answer.

The large lion collided himself with the lunging female, twisting his body with the impact and driving her downward. His weight accompanied by the impact would make for a particularly hard hit to the ground, and he intended to keep her there. The large brute was quick to gain a favorable position above her, pressing one heavy paw thickly into her chest to keep her in place, his snarling maw mere inches from her own. Any sudden moves, and she was sure to get a particularly nasty bite to the face. The menacing growl still reverberated through his throat, ad Don opted to let Ru do all the talking.

Fen'li's eyes widened at the male, "she makes the hurt to others...not me, I can't, not taught how to. Her father though, she told me stories," she babbled to the dark male above her. He didn't seem to be clawing at her, nor bruising her, just, encapsulating her under his frame.

He wasn't a bad lion after all, it seemed.

They wanted to give them a home, they could have a home! Fen'li looked to Karm. Fen was not a traveler like her dark companion, and the thought of a pride, one area, was tempting, it almost made Fen overjoyed within. But how this was happening, it scared her. She was not brave as Karm was.

But with the dark male's final words, Fen gulped, cried out to Karm, 'Stop, stop Karm don't! He'll hurt me!" and she looked up to the big dark male, now whispering so only he could hear, "like that? she takes charge, very strong, you wouldn't hurt me, really, would you?" It was evident Fen was easy to go with the flow of these events.

Karm, not so much. As she smacked her body against the male, his force was greater than hers. Her paws gave out under her and she hit the ground with a snarl and she snapped her jaw up at his throat but his paw to her chest was quick to keep her subdued. What warriors were these? Trained by her grandfather? Her father, she had thought, had trained her well, but her father had told stories of the even darker male who had had stripes as well...perhaps he had found kin with them?

With Fen's cry to Karm, she looked to Fen immediately, how she cowered, and Karm looked to the male above her, her snarl subdued and her chest heaving, she huffed.

If she had had her father's...or grandfather's eyes, she would have won.

"I'd not harm either of us, if I were you," she spoke aloud. "If I am to suspect we are of some prize to you, so be it, but you will see, someday, what strength lies in my blood," she said with a sneer, "and what value I can be." What she referred to were the cool eyes of her father, those of her grandfather. Though she had not inherited them, if this band was that of true warriors, they'd value strong children one day (it was a dark story her father had told her once, her mother had simply laughed at the idea). And who knew, perhaps she'd like sparring with the lot here, gain her more strength.

That was how she saw the world.

"Get off," she said trying to shove him, "you've won. Let me go to her. She is like a sister to me. Do not harm her," she spoke to the male holding her down.

Ru didn't devote a great deal of attention to the conversation going on behind him between Vol and his captive. There was no need, in his opinion. Vol had things under control and Ru had always had difficulty tracking multiple conversations at once, which meant that whenever possible it was better for him not to eavesdrop and to prioritize what he wanted to hear. Right now, it was obviously more important to keep his attention on the dark lioness who had not yet submitted.

Nevertheless, there was no conversation going on between Don and his opponent, just the familiar sound of muscled bodies slamming against one another in combat, and so Ru could not help but overhear the pale lioness's question to Vol. "Like that?" It was kind of adorable and Ru hoped there wouldn't be any need to hurt her.

His upbringing prior to coming to the Stormborn had made him disinclined to hurt females and every time he came across one who was sweet and accommodating rather than fierce and feisty he regretted the cruelty he sometimes had to inflict on them, though less and less as he became accustomed to it. And now, he knew, he could not show any hesitation as a captain.

"Perhaps we will," Ru agreed, addressing the lioness who had ceased her fight so abruptly when her companion called out to her. "But for now you are to come with us quietly and do as you're told. Deliberate infractions will not be tolerated, but I understand that it can be...challenging to adjust to the life you'll be leading after this."

Without taking his eyes off the dark lioness he motioned to Vol to let the pale lioness up. "Her safety depends on your good behavior. I will see to it she is not touched or harmed as long as you make no effort to leave my band or harm any of us. Is that understood?"

"Don, please escort these two back to the band. Let them know what I've said about touching. Vol and I will join you shortly."
_____

"She can try," he rumbled softly. "But she's outnumbered."

Despite himself Vol smirked at the silly lioness beneath him. At least half of this capture was going easily. He had not had too many instances where the thralls had actually been this enthusiastic about being captured. Most of the time the closest he got to enthusiasm was a sort of resignation or cautious optimism along the lines of "maybe it won't be so bad."

"Like that," he agreed, barely keeping the amusement from his voice. Like Ru, he found himself hoping that he wouldn't have to follow through on his threat.

"Look. It's going to be fine," he reassured his charge as he obeyed Ru and stood to let her up. Even as he stepped away from her the reaver remained tense and ready to react to attempts at fighting or fleeing from either lioness.

"You two just have to be good, and I think you can do that." He had his doubts about her companion's ability to be good, but he wasn't going to comment on that. It would only distress her, he suspected, and some creatures didn't deserve that sort of distress, being weak and flowery in the blood as they were.

Vol guessed Ru intended to consider their scouting expedition, since that had been the original purpose of their outing. In his opinion, the racket of several lions fighting had probably woken up most of the denizens of the area and thrown off any hope they might have of accuracy there.

He threw a look at Ru and said, "If it's all the same, I'll go back with Don. You scout better on your own anyway."

This one talked a lot. More so than he would have liked, and despite being held down still held venom in her voice. The brute remained purposely unresponsive to the things she said and fighting a small smirk that threatened to overtake his toothy expression. Don remained in place, not even flinching as she attempted to dislodge him from his position over her. No miscommunication here, she had no control over the situation and he would be sure to let her know it. His snarl remained plastered in place as did his paw to her chest. It wasn't her plea to let her up that removed said paw, but the orders of his captain. Don's movements were deliberate in showing this, as he allowed her enough space to get up, but not much else. He was half tempted to drag her there himself, though such thoughts were only mildly entertained and he shifted momentarily so she could indeed move on her own volition.

The golden lion made brief eye contact with his captain, nodding his heavy head and thick mane to his orders. "Captain," he spoke in the affirmative. The pale lion usually wasn't a heavy speaker in the first place, but he was remaining purposefully close-mouthed in this instance. Moving off toward Vol and his captive, while sticking close to Karm just in case she decided to make another move towards him or his comrades- in which case his teeth would be swift to find her again.

He wouldn't have minded taking them back himself, for as far as he was aware Vol's hadn't put up a fight, but Don was relieved to hear that the older Reaver would be coming back with him. His charge thus far seemed unruly and untrustworthy, and he would hate for the pale lioness to get away while he dealt with the dark one. Despite this, Don still opted to remain next to Karm. His opinion on the lioness was thus far vague and unformed, as he had not allowed himself the luxary of thinking on it just yet. "Don't try anything, and I won't touch her", he reiterated to the dark lioness, his voice dry and rumbling and his eyes sweeping past her to briefly eye the pale one. Truly he would have no problem following through on the threat, and he would make sure she knew it.
