A pale shifting of light burst through a still figure's vision. The figure opened her eyes suddenly as she remembered what the arrival of light promised. Tsunami rose to her feet and gave a gleeful shout before cantering towards the edge of her known territory. Today was a special day. She was now old enough to leave the herd territory and explore beyond. There was a flutter of nervousness that came with this sudden feeling of freedom but Tsunami pushed it deep down inside. She canted her gaze to the left and then the right before skittering on the loose rocks that marked one of the borders of the herd. She gazed down on the land below and turned at the sound of approaching hoof beats. She craned her neck around and caught sight of a very familiar figure.

"Hello Mother."

Stormfall had been up since the birds had begun singing their morning chorus. Darkness had still held a tenuous grip over the land and she sighed before rising to her feet. Her first instinct was to graze but she pushed it aside. She knew what today brought. Her daughter was of age where she could freely travel the lands beyond Thunderbird territory. She had not had the same restriction when she was just a filly but Stormfall had imposed this decision on her only daughter to keep her from harm.

She shook her mane ruefully. Tsunami had grown into a young mare and she was sometimes a little headstrong. She loved to find adventure within the herd however she could. Just thinking of some of the adventures her daughter had cooked up brought a slight chuckle. Pacing herself Stormfall began to make her way towards the ledge that overlooked the land below this wonderful place. She had heard a gleeful shout moments earlier and knew that Tsunami had indeed beaten her to their agreed meeting place. Tsunami's greeting reached her and Stormfall gave a small inclination of her head.

"Good morning daughter."

Tsunami watched as her mother arrived to stand beside her. Her heart was beating a little faster with the adrenaline rush that she was experiencing. She gazed down fondly at the land that had so far been out of reach ... until today. Her posture shifted as she turned towards the one that had raised her. She had had the perfect candidate for a mother in Stormfall and although she had found the restriction that was placed upon her slightly unfair she had never complained. The reason why was this day. Today she was free to do as she chose. She rustled her wings before giving a soft sigh.

"It seems like the perfect day for flying. No wind and the sun is just beginning to warm the air. You won't take back your word right? I am still free to leave if I choose?"

Tsunami hated to even ask that. It would imply that she didn't trust Stormfall. That would sit unwell as there was no one more that she trusted in her life.

Stormfall let her wingtips brush against Tsunami's side in an effort to silence her questions. She had hoped that this day hadn't crept up on her but it had. Time was unforgiving it seemed and she gave her daughter a brave smile. "It is indeed perfect flying weather Sunni. I guess that means that you still plan on traveling for a while beyond the territory."

She gave a heavy sigh before pushing down the portion of her that was ruled by motherly instinct. It was fighting tooth and hoof to prevent Tsunami from leaving. She could not impede her daughter's journey. She had made the promise and she would live by it. Closing the distance between herself and her daughter Stormfall nuzzled at Tsunami's side. "I wish you only the best in your journey. Remember what you have learned from our family. You carry the proud lineage of Stormwild and Balrog inside your blood and are a true member of the Thunderbird Herd. Your wings shall carry you far. But there are also dangers that you must heed. Beware those that wear pelts on their backs. For they are truly a danger to all."

Tsunami leaned in towards her mother's gentle caress. She would miss this. It was hard to admit that to herself on the morning of the greatest adventure yet. To not admit that fact would reflect that she felt nothing for the mare standing beside her. Tsunami gave a tiny flinch at her mother's nickname for her before shrugging it off. There was nothing to do but listen to her mother's words. She remembered her knowledge from her lessons. The words that her mother spoke about pelted ones. A small shiver traversed her spine at the warning.

She now moved forward to silence her mother. Her horn glinted in the morning light as she turned her gaze to admire the view around them. She gave a small smile of apology to Stormfall. "I remember what I've been told mom. I'll be back within a few weeks anyways. I don't think I'll meet anyone who would want to do me harm. I'm just going to do a little exploring outside these lands. I want to see how the world outside is. Maybe I'll even try and find grandfather."

Tsunami opened her wings to their full width before taking a few steps back from the ledge she occupied. "I love you mom. I'll be fine."

With those words spoken Tsunami ran to the edge of the ledge and gave a mighty jump into the air. The wind currents caught under her wings and she glided with grace into the crystal blue skies beyond. A quick turn of her head confirmed that Stormfall had not moved from her spot. Tsunami resumed her flight down towards the land below. She'd graze in the valley for her breakfast before deciding on a path to take.

Stormfall felt her daughter's swift touch retreat. Her eyes widened at her Tsunami's little plan before she shook her head. She couldn't even say no to that suggestion. Stormfall's heart pinched at Tsunami's declaration before she nodded. The words didn't have to be spoken aloud. Her daughter knew everything she needed to know to remain safe on her journey.

Her eyes took in her daughter's run to the ledge and subsequent free fall before she found her flight rhythm. She remained rooted in her spot. There was no need to follow her daughter. It would create a seed of mistrust in Tsunami and it was with a heavy heart that she watched her daughter's descent. Soon enough the silhouette began to shrink as Tsunami's trajectory took her beyond sight.

Stormfall turned away from the ledge with a quiet sound of anguish. She knew that Tsunami would return but it didn't vanquish the sudden hole that appeared inside. "May Thunderbird guide you on the true path Sunni. Be careful and return home soon."
