SUIYAKU KEISKEI

Convallaria majalis commonly known as the lily-of-the-valley, is a poisonous woodland flowering plant native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe.

It is possibly the only species in the genus Convallaria (or one of two or three, if C. keiskei and C. transcaucasica are recognised as separate species). In the APG III system, the genus is placed in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoideae (formerly the family Ruscaceae). It was formerly placed in its own family Convallariaceae, or earlier, like many lilioid monocots, in the lily family Liliaceae.

A limited native population occurs in Eastern USA (Convallaria majalis var. montana). There is, however, some debate as to the native status of the American variety.

Name: Suiyaku, Keiskei

Suiyaku - Family Name

In Japanese the word means potion or literally liquid medicine. Sui - liquid and Yaku - medicine.

Keiskei - First Name

This is basically the name of the subspecies of a flower under the Convallaria family. The Keiskei subspecies - from China and Japan, with red fruit and bowl-shaped flowers. The Japanese lettering reflects the description of the flower looking like a small bell.

Race: DRUID

Position: Eccentric Potion Maker and a little bit of a go-to-healer/doctor if one is Desperate...

Stage: Druid -- aspiring to be a Sage someday (far far away...)

Gender: Male

Age: 28

Height: 6' 2"

Body Build: He's tall and lean, a bit on the gangly side seemingly not done with a teen's awkwardness during a growth spurt.

Skin Tone: Pale, with a tiny dusting of freckles. He burns easily but he likes being out and about in the forest.

Hair: The color ranges from white to mint-green. Due to a magical accident with a transmutation spell back when he was a young one. Keiskei's hair resembles formations of petals and feathers rather than normal hair.

For hygiene, mostly he pats it dry and shuffles it around rather than combing through the mess. At first it was something of a contention amongst his peers (his hair being rather feminine being petal-like) but he's grown used to it or rather, he's learned to ignore the jibes it brings him.

Mostly they're soft, somewhat velvety in texture while others have an almost distinctly soft feathery edge and feel to them. His locks are mostly short with two "ear-tails".

side note: his hair always smells floral-sweet like his namesake flower
side side note: he has a small goatee

Eyes: A deep vivid green that resembles the first flush of spring buds surrounded by round framed spectacles.

Armor: Virtually none aside from his robes...as much of an armor heavy cloth makes.

Weapon: Mostly he likes carrying around heavy books which he can use as a heavy blunt object to brain people. Seriously though, he carries around vials, pots and ampules of miscellaneous potions and syrups. They range from an innocent pot of honey to a deadly vial of sulfuric acid. He even carries around a small ampule of tetradotoxin from puffer fish in case of emergency instances of much needed poisoning. ( You shouldn't piss him off or he'll use it on you! )

Keiskei's Tea Ingredients: DEADLY FLORA TEA
It looks deceptively clear. A shade somewhere between black tea and green tea. The smell's very fragrant. Sweet and alluring, almost inviting one to take a small whiff before bringing the cup to one's lips.

All Keiskei can say however is that smelling it, or merely touching the tea is enough to send a normal person into a coma. It tastes pretty good to Kei though, if you trust his taste enough to believe.

Personality:

BOOKWORM
Keiskei's basically a bookworm. He likes to spend hours on end buried in books both fiction and non-fiction. This pastime however often leads him to daydream and on those times he is not deeply buried in a book it makes him a little less aware of his surroundings than normal people.

CURIOUS
Keiskei is ,like most druids, insanely curious about things, creatures and people. He likes to poke and prod at things he often finds deep in the forest. The fact that he's immune to poisons only encourages his propensity to poke at things he shouldn't.

SOCIALLY AWKWARD
He's also extremely socially awkward and would often treat people or sentient beings he encounters like the objects/creatures he's usually more familiar experimenting with. This leads to a lot of misunderstandings. Often to his detriment.

Scene Sample:

Keiskei saw a very attractive witchling heading underneath the boughs of his favorite willow tree which he was currently sitting in. She sported a rather unusually bright pink color for her hair. It was rather pretty though it clashed quite horribly with the spray-on-tan she sported. Almost like a flower being a bit too enthusiastic in attracting pollinating bees.

He quickly grabbed a small torn piece of paper from the bag at his side and hastily scrawled a note. He was much too afraid to approach her directly...but such a travesty to the eye must be corrected! Sneaking down to on to the lower branches stealthily, he quickly and quietly dropped the note unto the witchling's bags as she passed.

A few moments later, the outraged screech that startled an entire grove's population of magpies however wasn't the intended result he sought. He wasn't intending to insult anyone...just help that's all.

End Sample Scene

INTROVERT
He's can be an introvert spending many an hour entertaining himself either with reading, making potions in his home lab/kitchen or wandering the forest poking at things and startling animals out of their homes but when it comes to work he'll not shy from people, but mostly this is because he imagine them more as their illness than intelligent beings. Aka, patient number 1 gets delegated in his mind as Rat Poison Case.

CURIOSITY-INDUCED ADVENTUROUSNESS
Even though he's normally an introvert, however if he's curious enough and intrigued enough. Keiskei will brave the perils of another person's/being's company to share the joys of discovery. He thinks it's the ultimate joy in life and should be shared.

QUICK AND FLIGHTY TEMPER
Keiskei's not good at holding grudges however he can get a little excessive getting back at someone who's slighted him. However this is only a quick flash of temper and will likely be forgotten soon. Though his vengeance, due to his poison ability, often leaves a few lingering side-effects even when he's not angry anymore.

CLUELESS, DENSE AND FORGETFUL
Also Keiskei can get a little clueless and dense when it comes to people and things outside of his usual zone of interest which is potions, poisons and drugs. Normally he can quote, rant and lecture about a thousand and one poisons, their effects on a person's body and even their scientific names but ask him when a certain person's birthday is...he usually has no clue. He even forgets his own adoptive parent's birthday. This also sadly applies to names...he remembers people more for their looks rather than their names. An example being: he'd remember a person being a redhead, and maybe having a fiery temper...but their names would be a total slip.

Keiskei also has a really hard time getting social cues. He can try healing a patient who's got poison and then gets really absorbed in his work, totally forgetting that common sense dictates you get the patient out of his/her vomit encrusted clothes before starting on the healing bit...

FLIGHT OF IDEAS
Keiskei in a conversation never stays still. He can start talking about plants and somehow in the next sentence find himself talking about how tailors sew clothes. It can be quite confusing to talk to him...until you get used to it. This often also means he's quite capable of talking endlessly about a subject and never actually getting to the point.

HELPFUL in a WAY
Keiskei would love to help but only if he feels like it. Most of the time he's too awkward to approach someone he doesn't know to help and ends up not really helping at all in the end. So he sorts of thinks about helping before he decides to actually help. Most of the time it's often to late for him to help so he just shrugs and passes by. This is different with allies though. He tends to give it his all if he's close to someone that needed help. Especially one he knows he can do.

Also, work in their little "clinic" isn't really "helping" for Keiskei. After all to him, work is work. Doesn't matter if it's a plant or a patient he's treating. If he gets compensation for it..then good. It'll help provide more for his research and maybe that dress his Nunna has been wanting for awhile.

Mostly he's Passive Nuetral. He's the type to stand in the sidelines to wait for the fight to pass. It doesn't mean he wouldn't defend himself though when it comes to the need. But he'd rather not fight physically if he can help it.

Likes:

Keiskei basically likes to learn about things. Mostly useless things but things nonetheless. He either gets it from books or goes out and pokes at it. (Quite literally!) This leads to bringing home a lot of dangerous things...and building literal book mountains in his home.

He also LOVES to cook! It doesn't mean he's anywhere competent enough to actually cook something edible. He doesn't mind though. Nothing will ever upset his stomach as he's immune to anything poisonous. Keiskei's even used to the fact that a lot of things he likes to eat can be very very bitter.

"Coffee powder is a lot like poison. Bitter...and a little tingly to the palate."
--Kei during a trip to a cafe

He likes to try new things at least once but if he ever dislikes it. He'll come to avoid it like the plague.

Kei also likes to grow and gather ingredients for his many potion creations. He could be found lost for days in the forest basically window shopping for ingredients. This tendency was what led him to visit the town of Clarus Arbor.

Dislikes:

Keiskei dislikes noisy places often preferring to sit in quiet spots to enjoy his many pastimes.

He also has a very artistic eye and frowns at things he thinks look ugly. (He has a quirky eye and finds the oddest things ugly.) This means he often likes to correct these unsightly things...which leads to either a lot of trouble or a lot of laughs.

Keiskei hates being told what to do. So much so it often leads to people using deliberate reverse psychology to make him do anything. This hate stems back from when he was younger and would get bullied and teased for his unusual appearance and odd, introvert behavior.

Scene Sample:

"KeiKei's so girly. Look at his pansy hair and stupid robes!" Calls out the obnoxious boy living next to his home.

Keiskei frowned and looked down on his clothes. They weren't stupid. They were the traditional fine garments that his adoptive guardian told him his parents' culture wore.

"What?" The boy jeered, "Can't say anything cuz you're too stupid?"

Keiskei stared hard at the boy. He couldn't quite understand why he was being so mean. Kei'd only passed by hoping to get to the forest to replenish his supply of licorice root. He'd done absolutely nothing to the idiot.

Kei breathed in, and locked eyes with the other, "Got noth'n to say to nonsense like that!" And walked away into the forest. He'll ignore him. Just like he did everything else. He wasn't worth getting hurt over. It didn't help the little sting of pain that took residence in his heart over the words though.

End Scene Sample

Biography:

Keiskei was a foundling found deep in the Forest of Trials: The Grave of Fairies. The tiny infant was placed in a rather misshapen looking basket filled with torn pieces of fine fabrics with prints that spoke of places far away. The young one had rather pale skin, vivid green eyes and fine brunette hair and was unusually quiet for a baby.

It was a rather old and poor Witch-Eater that found the infant and within the fine pieces of fabric came a small note.

Please take care of him.
His name is Suiyaku, Keiskei.
He comes from a long and noble family, all dead now.
It is better if he start life anew somewhere else.

It had taken the Witch Eater many moons to decipher the odd language the note had been written in but she soon found that it had been from a rather hidden culture far in the East.

The Witch Eater, whose name was Nunna, had lived amongst a small group of Druids that had founded their homes in the midst of the Grave of Fairies Forest. She, though seemingly welcome to live with them, was not entirely accepted into the community. Druids were a very secretive lot and her being a stranger amongst them was rather notable. The only thing that allowed Nunna to live within the grove was because she'd once saved the group leader's only son from a Witch Eater she'd once known as a friend.

Raising Keiskei by herself was both daunting and enjoyable. The boy was a delight and a frustration. Always curious about everything, but never enough to actually do himself so much harm...to a point.

------------------------

"Nunna! Nunna!" came the excited chirps of a young boy from the edges of the forest. "Look what I got!"

Nunna was surprised to find a whole bundle of deadly Death Cap mushrooms shoved into her arms. She was also frozen in horror as she watched the young boy chew on a cap as if it was the most succulent of fruits.

"BOY!" Nunna hastily called out, "Spit that damn thing out of your mouth now!"

Stubborn, the boy frowned at his adoptive parent and questioned, "Why? It tastes pretty good! Like....beef STEW!"

Nunna quickly caught the child in her arms, "It's poisonous you damn fool! Spit it out now!" She shook Kei, hoping the boy would realize the grave mistake he'd made. They were too poor seek a healer and she'd rather grown fond of her foundling.

"I feel fine Nunna!" The boy swore, looking determined." I don't feel anything funny at all!"

It was true. Apparently the boy had eaten about three of the mushrooms already and had chewed on a fourth. The entire night had been spent observing for any side-effects only to find the boy hale and hearty the next day.

---------------------------------

That had been when the boy's apparent immunity to all sorts of poisonous things had been discovered. The incident also led to Nunna teaching the boy all the herb lore she knew, little as it was.

Nunna had few friends in the Druid town, but she'd found a few who'd made a little time each day to teach the boy some druid lore and magic. What money she earned from making small crafts like baskets and jams she would buy books for the boy who seemed to devour them with a will.

Keiskei soon grew up to be en energetic youth often going on long trips into the forest to harvest ingredients for his childish experiments in ointments, slaves and potions. He would experiment with anything and everything he could get his hands on, much to the annoyance of his few teachers.

It was in one such incident with a spell in transmutation that gave him his present distinctive looks.

----------------------------------------

Keiskei was busily chopping, dicing and mincing all manner of herbs he'd found earlier in the Forest that day. The potion he was trying to complete was nearly finished. It had been sitting there bubbling for almost the entire afternoon and he'd almost gotten the last of the needed ingredients for the finished potion.

His teacher Drulach had told him the Potion of Familial Ties was a rather tricky potion to finish requiring not only intense concentration to make sure everything was mixed right but also the exact amount of ingredients were stirred in.

Keiskei was rather annoyed that he'd been unable to get the right subspecie of the Lily of the Valley flower. He'd asked the plant if it had been the Keiskei variety which had been his namesake but the plant had woefully told him that it was of the Majalis type.

He'd really wanted to finish the potion. Drulach had told him that if done right, the Potion of Familial Ties would give him a hint of what his blood family had been like. A vision of sorts.

Keiskei gritted his teeth. He would prevail he was sure of it. The youth quickly grabbed a manual of magic his Nunna had gotten him for his birthday and found the transmutation spell he'd need. The flower he'd gotten was almost exactly what he'd need the small pink contaminating the petals just needed to be turned to pure white. It would just need a wee bit of tweaking to be perfect.

He didn't know that the transmutation spell he'd started was way beyond his current abilities. The spell soon grew larger than he could handle, almost sucking his entire core into powering the spell. Keiskei only held so much magic in his small form, the spell spontaneously lost control and dissolved with the small boy at it's center.

In the aftermath, Nunna had found Keiskei covered in soot from head to toe, splatters of the potion he was working on littering the floor. In his hands however was a small sprig of Lily of the Valley, petals white as snow. The boy's hair had turned from the formerly brunette color to pure silver platinum but that wasn't the only change. Keiskei's hair was now bunched up into soft sheets, almost like petals with some edges appearing ragged but pliant, almost like feather. Afterwards, Keiskei's hair would always smell sweet. Like the flower he was named after.

-----------------------------------------------------

As Keiskei grew older, the reputation of his salves, potions and tinctures gained momentum both amongst his neighbors in the town they lived in, but even as far off as the town of Moonfall where some of his potion creations end up.

This source of livelihood has come to be a boon for both Keiskei and his rather old adoptive parent Nunna who can no longer work to provide for them. Sometimes, patients can come waltzing into their shared home without any notice bringing in miscellaneous complaints and problems. Nunna has grown used to this and would help out by acting something like a secretary/nurse with Keiskei being the not so responsible doctor. In this way, the Druid learned more of the healing aspect of his craft and sometimes ways to use poison in healing. (A little like using phenol to cauterize wounds.) Keiskei's skill in patient handling however falls rather short and most of the time, the aging Nunna is needed to smooth over dissent. Their home has become somewhat of a cross between an Apothecary and a Clinic.

Ability Concetration/Theme:

"Bitter. The taste indicative of poisons. Usually alkaloids."
- Keiskei on tasting his own cooking.

Poison Touch

This ability only works on organic and living things. Basically he can either enhance an item's inherent ability to poison or give something living with the ability to either poison to be poisoned.

His ability is mostly used in conjunction with his potion/tincture/salves making skills although it sometimes bleeds into his cooking which creates another whole set of problems. It basically enhances the deadly effects on the ingredients or the actual end potion that he makes.

Keiskei can also make himself quite poisonous. It can be as innocuous as a finger's touch introducing the poison into a being's bloodstream or an angry spit in the eye which burns a victim's eyeball with hemotoxic venom.

Big downside of his ability is that he's not yet mastered the ability to make the right antidote yet. He can make them...but it takes a lot more effort and experimenting to get right. It's still part of his Poison Touch ability to be able to neutralize poisons (especially ones he's tailor-made) but he must first identify the poison in order to cure it....which is actually harder than it seems.
He can either use his touch to introduce the antidote into the poisoned being (only works though on a poison he himself created or induced) or make a physical antidote for the poisoned being to drink or use as a salve.

A side-effect of his ability is that he's virtually immune to everything poisonous as his body's magic just literally consumes them and in effect gives him the ability to recreate that poison. ( It also means...he can eat his own cooking but no one else can, not without significant deleterious effects on their health anyway.... )

You've got a sound character here, and I'd honestly approve it as is, but I do have a concern about his "airy" sense of personality if he's also a doctor of sorts. One cannot be "clueless and forgetful" when they are a doctor. There needs to be a bit more of a reason really behind this. What makes him go into "doctor mode" vs "normal mode" is there a difference? There should be! Otherwise I'd be afraid to have him treat my wounds!

I'd clear up that bit of him and explain that in a bit more detail how he's able to be a bit clueless yet still intelligent. I'd see him more lacking common sense really than being ditzy (Clueless, dense and forgetful) . smile

Otherwise, he's approved by me.

Hmmm...I think I should explain that when it comes to people-people type things he's clueless and forgetful. But if it's things he cares about he remembers them very well.

Something like...how often husbands can forger their anniversary dates but never forget when the next football game is or the football game stats.

Also he's not really a doctor-doctor more like a quack. XD
He knows a lot of things about poisons and poisonings which can also be caused by bacteria which secrete certain poisons which make people sick. So he can cure those...and since it's in his realm of interest, he remembers essential things like that. >>;

Yeah. I'll go clear that up.
THANKS!
